Just to See You Smile
Chapter 3
Harry had decided that he really didn't like what was happening. Each time he woke up, he felt as if something else had changed and, unable to see what was happening around him, he couldn't tell if any of this was real or not.He had been convinced before that he was perhaps now dead, that his wish had come true and he was finally free of the pain. However, waking up today, the pain was back; but even the pain was different, it had dulled to more of a soreness through his whole body, though his feet still hurt when he tried to move them. So the only thing Harry could decide now was that he maybe wasn't dead, but instead in a safe place his mind had created for him to escape the pain. Only he could never fully escape it, as the shadows of pain reminded him where he was, and that if he ever truly woke up then he would be back with his captors.Slowly blinking open his eyes, Harry couldn't help but let out a small sigh as he still only saw blackness. It was another reason to believe that this was all just in his mind; he couldn't remember what people looked like, it made sense that he wouldn't be able to see them here in his mental refuge either.“Harry?” a voice close to the bed spoke, and Harry sat up quickly, ready to move away if the person moved any closer. “It's Charlie,” the voice said and Harry sighed, though he didn't fully relax.“Charlie...” Harry said softly.“Yes. Do you remember what happened last night?” Charlie asked and Harry shook his head.“No, everything is really fuzzy...” Harry admitted, chewing on his lower lip. “Where is this place?” Harry asked, as he shifted around on the bed to try and get more comfortable.“You're currently at the dragon reserve in Romania. I'm hoping we can move you to the Burrow soon though,” Charlie said and Harry couldn't help but smile a little as he remembered the place that he had once thought of as a second home, Hogwarts having been his first.“Why aren't we there now?” Harry questioned, shifting closer to the edge of the bed, ignoring the soreness in his legs. He wanted to get up and walk around, he couldn't do that when he was really awake but in his special mind-space he decided that he should be able to.“You're not stable enough to be moved yet,” was Charlie's reply, before two strong hands settled on Harry's shoulders. “You shouldn't be standing; the healer said you needed to stay off your feet until you're a bit more healed,” Charlie said and Harry frowned.“I'm just sore, I can stand,' Harry insisted and tried to get up again. But the strong hands wouldn't allow him. “Let me up,” Harry demanded.“Harry, you're still hurt. If there is something you need, I can get it for you,” Charlie offered but Harry shook his head.“I want to get up!” Harry said, pushing at Charlie's hands and standing, when he felt the taller boy let him go. But that only lasted for a moment, before Harry was lifted off his feet and placed back on the bed.The sudden movement had Harry screaming and lashing out. Harry moved away from the person quickly, as soon he had been placed on the bed, only to be grabbed and pulled back towards them. They weren't being as rough with him as his captors had been but Harry really didn't like the treatment. Kicking out, his foot connected with something solid; there was a thud of something heavy landing on the floor but Harry didn't stay on the bed to figure out what that noise meant. He scurried off the bed as fast as he dared, ignoring the pain in his feet, both from the kick, and from standing now. Arms stretched out in front of him, he scrabbled his way across the room, vaguely remembering that there had been a table in the room when he had tried to escape before. He managed to avoid colliding with the table this time, but a groan from behind him had Harry moving forward a bit faster, coming to an abrupt stop as his hands came in contact with a wall. His heart was hammering in his chest as he frantically felt around him for a door.“Harry.” The small boy heard Charlie behind him. “Harry, calm down, please. No one's going to hurt you,” Charlie said but Harry shook his head still searching for the door. Hearing foot steps behind him, Harry turned around so that his back was now against the wall, his hands held out in front of him again. He knew that this wouldn't really do anything to stop the person claiming to be Charlie, but it was all he could really do at the moment.Larger hands took his smaller ones. “Harry, I'm sorry for scaring you,” Charlie said. “You can't be on your feet at the moment though, they're still healing.”Harry tilted his head slightly. “I don't like it here,” Harry said softly. “I want to go to the Burrow.”“In a few days we might be able to,” Charlie promised.Harry shook his head not accepting that answer. “...please, I don't like it here, I want to go home...” Harry heard Charlie sigh, though the man didn't say anything to his pleading. Harry tried to pull his hands away, but the larger hands squeezed gently holding Harry in place.“I really don't think taking you through the floo is a good idea, at least not yet. You're still hurt and you could injure yourself more by traveling like that. And portkey is too dangerous as well,” Charlie tried to explain but Harry just shook his head again, refusing to accept that as an answer.“I don't care, I don't want to stay here... Please let me go... please... I want to go home.,” Harry said again, not caring that he was begging,; he had never begged his captors, but this was too much for him. A sudden sharp pain in his leg had Harry sinking to his knees, though his hands were still being held by the larger and stronger ones.Harry let out a small gasp of pain, feeling the muscle spasm in his leg; it was then that Harry was reminded that this was all in his mind, that he was really with his captors, and the hands holding his smaller ones weren't really there. He was most likely hanging from the ceiling again."I'm sorry, Harry," that voice said and Harry lifted his head slightly."You're not really here..." Harry pulled again at his hands, a little surprised when they slid free of the larger ones."I am here, Harry." The voice was closer and Harry assumed that Charlie had knelt down in front of him, but Harry shook his head in denial. “I am real, Harry,” Charlie insisted. Reaching out, he gently took Harry's hand, holding it against his chest so that Harry could feel his heart beat. “I'm right here, Harry, this is real. You're not dead, or dreaming.”Harry wanted to believe him, he wanted to believe it so badly that it hurt. It felt real, but he had woken up from dreams like this before, woken to find himself being tortured again. He wanted to be free, though he had long since accepted the fact that the only freedom he was going to find was in death. However, this was Charlie Weasley, or at least a person claiming to be the second son of the red-headed family.Harry pulled his hand away from where he could feel Charlie's heartbeat, wrapping his skinny arms around himself and rocking slowly back and forth. He thought he heard Charlie trying to talk to him again but he was no longer focused on that, he had decided he didn't like this dream anymore; even if it meant more pain, he wanted to wake up, he wanted what was real. Each movement he made caused another sting of pain, another reminder that he wasn't really here. He could almost feel the knife being dragged along the bottom of his foot again. A hand touched his shoulder and Harry flinched away from it. “...please...”“Harry, I'm not going to hurt you.” Charlie kept his voice soft.Harry once again felt that large hand on his shoulder, and though he flinched again, he didn't pull away this time; it didn't mean he wasn't afraid, Harry was just more worried about what new kind of pain fighting would bring. So he allowed those strong hands to slowly pull him back to his feet before gently lifting him off the floor. Harry hated the sensation of moving, and not knowing where he was being taken. However, a moment later he felt the soft mattress under him again, and something warm being pulled over him. He didn't try moving again; his whole body hurt, and he knew that must mean he would be waking up from his safe place soon, he would be back with his captors.-------------------xCharlie stood back and watched the small boy on the bed. Harry hadn't moved at all since he had placed him back there, and if it weren't for the rising and falling of Harry's chest, Charlie would have worried that Harry was dead. There was a soft knock on the door behind him before Stefan poked his head in. Charlie glanced back at the other dragon handler and nodded a greeting.“I was sent to relieve you of guard duty,” Stefan said, coming to stand next to Charlie, staring at the red-head. “Whoa, what happened to your face?” the younger man asked. Frowning, Charlie reached up and touched the still sore spot on his cheek where Harry had kicked him before.“Harry was a bit scared earlier, nearly fell off the bed trying to get away from me. I didn't want him to hurt himself anymore, so I pulled him back before he actually fell,” Charlie explained.“And promptly got kicked in the face for it,” Stefan said, shaking his head. “Really, I get that this kid is important and all, but he'd do better with some professionals, don't you think?” Stefan asked, frowning when Charlie shook his head.“No, I don't think he'd do better locked up somewhere for people to poke at him. He's strong, always has been really.” Charlie looked back at Harry; the boy still hadn't moved and his eyes were still open, but Charlie doubted that Harry was even listening to anything they were saying.“You look exhausted, Charlie, seriously. I'm here to relieve you for a little while, go get some rest, or at least some coffee,” Stefan ordered, turning Charlie towards the door and giving him a slight push in that direction. “I swear, if anything happens to the kid, I'll call for you immediately, alright?” Stefan promised, and it was only after making the younger handler promise twice more that Charlie actually left the room.Charlie sighed once he was outside; he hadn't realised how tired he actually was until now, but that was to be expected after staying up all night to make sure that Harry got some sleep. There wasn't anything more that he could do for the boy at the moment though. Letting out another sigh, Charlie made his way up towards the apartment that he kept there at the reserve. However, as he passed by the main building, Annie came hurrying out."Charlie, I was just coming to get you," she said and Charlie raised an eyebrow at her."Whatever the problem is, isn't there anyone else that can handle it right now?" he asked but Annie shook her head."No, your brother is here to see you," she explained.Charlie silently cursed to himself, remembering only now that he had promised to call his mother so that she wouldn't worry. Deciding that his nap would have to wait now, and not even bothering to ask which brother it was, Charlie nodded his thanks to Annie before heading into the main building where Ron was pacing back and forth just inside the door."Ron?" Charlie frowned having expected to see perhaps George, as he had more free time than the young Auror. Taking note of how pale his brother currently looked, Charlie wondered if this was actually about him not calling home yet.Ron stopped pacing, turning to look at his older brother. "Charlie, I need your help," Ron said, which was not what the older red-head had been expecting to hear."What's wrong? Did something happen?" Charlie questioned in concern."The Death Eater we caught, he had information about Harry; he said he was here, in Romania. It's the first lead we've gotten but it's going to take too long to organise an official search and rescue party. Harry might not have much time left if the Carrows know that we caught Thorfinn Rowle." Ron had started pacing again as he spoke, not letting Charlie speak. The older man let out a frustrated sigh before grabbing Ron and stopping the pacing."Calm down, Ron!" Charlie ordered, thinking quickly about what to do. The decision not to tell his family about Harry immediately had been hard enough, but he couldn't lie right to his younger brother's face about it, even if it was in an attempt not to overwhelm Harry. "The emergency that I was called back here for last night, someone was found in one of the enclosures," Charlie said, not wanting to just dump the information onto his brother, who was already worked up about having new information about Harry.Ron stopped and stared at his brother; he didn't care about some stranger they had found in one of the enclosures. He wanted to snap at Charlie, demand that his older brother help before it was too late. But he held his tongue and thought about what possible reason Charlie would have for mentioning this now. His eyes widened and he shook his head slowly "No..." he said softly. The younger red-head didn't want to believe that Harry had been the one found in the enclosure; he remembered horror stories about what happened to people who had broken into the enclosures."Don't freak out yet," Charlie said sternly. "He is alive, but... mentally unstable. He isn't up for any kind of traveling either," Charlie explained."Charlie, please." Ron looked pleadingly at his older brother. "Is it him? Did you really find Harry?" Ron didn't want to believe it was that simple, but he also knew that Harry had escaped impossible situations before.Charlie nodded. "Yes, it is Harry." Charlie grabbed Ron's shoulder before he could run off to try and figure out what building Harry was in. "Ron, there's a few things we need to talk about before I let you see him," Charlie said seriously. Ron glared at his older brother. "I'm serious, Ron," Charlie fixed Ron with his own glare. "Harry... well, he's not going to be the Harry that you remember," Charlie tried to explain.Ron shrugged Charlie's hand off his shoulder. "I already knew that! He's been missing for seven months and, if what that Death Eater said was true, then he's been with the Carrows this whole time." Ron shook his head. "I just want to see him, Charlie. You can tell me what's wrong with him after, but I just need to see for myself that my best mate is still alive," Ron insisted.Charlie let out a long sigh; he couldn't deny Ron the chance to at least see Harry. But he also knew that it was going to be hard for Ron to see his best friend; Charlie had had difficult time looking at the younger wizard, and he hadn't know Harry as well as Ron did. "Alright, I'll take you to him, but I am warning you-""I know, I know, he's going to be banged up," Ron said, impatient to see his friend. Charlie gave his younger brother a look, wondering if this was really the right thing to do at the moment. After all, Harry hadn't been in the best of shape when Charlie had left him.“Alright, follow me,” Charlie said and he lead his brother out of the room, so they could go down to the medical building where he had left Harry with Stefan. Ron nodded, silently following his older brother. He looked around as they walked; Ron had only been to the reserve a couple times before and had never had the chance to really look around.Reaching the building, Charlie paused outside the door, mentally preparing himself for however Ron was going to react to seeing Harry. Opening the door, Charlie got a sense of déjà vu when he heard the sound of Harry screaming.Ron's face paled even more when he heard that scream; he had heard Harry screaming many times while growing up, all for various reasons. This scream reminded Ron all too well of how Harry sounded when his scar had burned, when his best friend was forced to see what Voldemort had been doing. Ron watched as Charlie darted down the hallway, bursting through a door. Ron took a moment to follow, though he moved a lot slower than Charlie had. He didn't want to see what it was that was making Harry scream like that.Coming to stand in the doorway, Ron watched as Charlie snapped at someone that Ron could only assume was another one of the dragon handlers. Glancing around the room, Ron looked at the empty bed, and a shattered potion vial on the floor. Movement caught Ron's attention and his eyes automatically darted in that direction. There, sitting curled up in a corner, not far from the bed, was Harry.Ron had to admit that Charlie had been right; Harry looked to be a ghost of his former self, he was skin and bone, far skinnier than Ron had ever seen him before. Bruises and scars were visible along the thin arms that Harry had wrapped around himself. Ron's view of Harry was blocked as Charlie knelt down in front of the frightened boy, but Ron kept staring, unable to turn away.“With the way the kid was screaming, you would think I was trying to murder him,” Stefan said as he came to stand next to Ron.“What did you do?” Ron asked, not trying to sound accusing, but Ron knew that Harry would not have screamed like that if this person hadn't done anything.“He said something about being in pain, so I just tried to give him a pain potion. The kid went ballistic, broke the vial, fell off the bed and is now in the corner there.” Stefan nodded in the direction of Charlie and Harry. Ron said nothing, instead he walked forward until he was standing behind Charlie, and could hear the whispered conversation between him and Harry.“Harry, please listen to me. No one is going to hurt you. Stefan was just being stupid, he's not going to give you any potions,” Charlie promised and Harry shook his head.“...no potions...”“That's right, no potions. Why don't we get you off the floor, yes?” Charlie tried to coax, but Harry made no move to uncurl from his spot in the corner.“Charlie, let me try?” Ron requested, Charlie looked over his shoulder at his younger brother.“...who's that?” Harry asked, lifting his head up so that Ron was able to see his friend's face for the first time.“It's Ron...” Ron said frowning as he stared at those green eyes that seemed to be staring right through him.“...liar...” Harry lowered his head again, his arms wrapping tighter around himself as his rocking picked up pace. “...I want to wake up now...”Charlie sighed softly. “Harry, I'm going to put you back on the bed.” Charlie waited for some form of response; not getting one, he reached out gently touching Harry's arm. When the boy didn't start screaming, the red-head took that as a sign that he could lift Harry up and put him back on the bed, which he did as gently as he could. “Try and get some rest, Harry, I'm going to call the healer, see if he can do something about the pain without using a potion,” Charlie promised and, standing up straight, he looked over at Ron, who didn't seem to know what to do about this situation.“Ron, we need to talk,” Charlie said. Ron nodded his head and allowed Charlie to lead him outside the room, neither of them willing to go that far in case Harry needed something. Once the door was closed and they could talk somewhat privately, Charlie leaned against the wall watching his brother. “I told you, he's mentally unstable,” Charlie said.Ron nodded. “You did say that, I didn't really know what you meant...” Ron sighed running a hand through his hair. “Bloody hell, I can't even think straight right now.” Ron closed his eyes and shook his head, hoping that maybe that might help in some way. “He's alive though...” Ron said, still not quite sure if that was a good or bad thing at the moment. He was happy that his best friend had survived, physically anyway. But the Harry he knew, compared to the broken boy that was currently laying on the bed in the room behind him, they were completely different people.“He is,” Charlie agreed. “We've got one of the best healers here; he has already healed quite a lot of the damage, internal bleeding, broken bones. I haven't looked at the full report yet, but between the potions they managed to get in him before, and his own magic, Harry's healing better than we expected. Though I don't think the healer can do anything about his eyes,” Charlie said, looking at Ron, who was doing better with all this information than Charlie had thought he would. Then again, Ron had been an Auror for nearly three years now, and had survived the war; the young man could probably handle a lot more than Charlie gave him credit for.“What about his eyes?” Ron asked.“He's blind, Ron.” Charlie informed him and Ron frowned. “Harry doesn't want to take any potions, not even a pain potion. The healer can't examine Harry's eyes unless he's awake, and Harry doesn't seem to like people near him when he's awake, so there isn't anything that can be done about his state of blindness. At least not at the moment,”Ron ran a hand through his hair again. “I've got to get back, I need to put a stop to the search party, let people know Harry's been found-”“Not a good idea,” Charlie interrupted. “Think about it, Ron; you let everyone know that Harry's alive and has been found, he's not going to be able to deal with that kind of attention.”Ron narrowed his eyes at his brother. “Despite what people think, I'm not stupid, Charlie. He's my best friend, I'm not about to go and announce to the whole world that he's been found, let alone where he is. But I'm not about to send people off on a wild chase to look for someone who's already been found. There are people who have the right to know that he's alive,” Ron snapped. “I'm telling the family, and I'm telling them everything you told me. Make a copy of the medical report as well; Mum, at the very least, will want to see it.”“I still think you should wait before telling people, Ron,” Charlie insisted. “Harry still doesn't know where he is.”“Then he needs his family around him,” Ron insisted. “I've got to go. Either owl the medical report, or I'll just come back and get it myself,” Ron said, taking a moment to go back into the room where Harry was, just to assure himself that his friend was still there and alive. But Harry appeared to be sleeping, so Ron left him alone. Not saying anything else to Charlie, the younger red-head left.Charlie shook his head; he still believed that he had made the right choice in not informing anyone about Harry. As soon as Ron told the family, they were all going to insist on seeing him and, with the fact that Harry couldn't seem to decide on what was reality or a dream, having the whole family around him suddenly most definitely was not going to end well for anyone.TBCAlright, here is chapter three!
