Chapter Three: The Beginning
They apparated to a safe point close to the muggle neighborhood the man had been living in and then walked the rest of the way. They didn't talk much and Rose kept running over the moments in her office over and over. He clearly wasn't going to forgive her and she couldn't blame him. What she had done had been awful.
She had been so in love with him. By the time Scorpius had proposed, she hadn't been able to imagine what her life would be like without him. It had been crazy really. What 17 year old boy proposed to a girl unless she was pregnant? Rose had certainly not been pregnant. She had been 17 and completely in love and terrified of what her father would say ... or even do.
Ron Weasley was a good man. He loved his wife and his children fiercely. He had been everything she could have hoped or wanted in a father and he had shown her over and over what love was in his relationship with her mother, but he was not perfect. He had not forgiven the Malfoys. He accepted Scorpius' place in his life as his nephew's best friend who sometimes spent the night at the Burrow or joined them for a meal, but that was a far cry different than his daughter's boyfriend, or worse, her fiance.
Falling in love with anyone, let alone Scorpius, before leaving Hogwarts had never been part of the plan. She hadn't honestly factored love into the plan at all. She wanted this. She wanted to be working here doing this job. She wanted to study time and death and love and unravel the mysteries that stumped the greatest witches and wizards. When Scorpius had come smashing into her life, she had been blindsided. One minute they were arguing about his ridiculous need to be contrary and the next he kissed her like his life depended on it and there had been no turning back.
It was a week after he'd first kissed her that Rose finally brought it up. She was sitting in the Library studying and he was across the room reading a book. He had been there all night, sitting, reading. She hadn't been able to focus on her herbology notes at all. She had been thinking about the way her lips tingled when he kissed her.
As the night wore on, the room emptied and he stayed there in the armchair, reading. Every so often he would glance up at her and catch her eye. He would smile and she would look back down at her book, blushing. It was infuriating.
After realizing that they were all alone, she had read the same paragraph 3 times and couldn't remember what it was about. Rose slammed the quill down onto her notes and glared at him. He was looking calmly at his book, a smirk on his lips.
She stood up and crossed the room, stomping the whole way as she went. When she was a few feet from the chair she crossed her arms and asked, "What was that?"
He laughed at her.
Laughed.
At her!
"What was what?"
She looked around the room quickly to make sure they were alone and hissed, "You kissed me!"
"You kissed me back." He reminded her.
"Well, that just isn't true," but she was lying. She certainly had kissed him back.
"You're lying."
"Maybe I am! But you started it."
"Did you like it?" He raised an eyebrow at her and she stuttered in response.
"Did you?" She asked, not wanting to admit that she hadn't been able to stop thinking about him.
"Of course I did." She hadn't expected blunt honesty. He was always surprising her.
"But, why?"
"Because I've been wanting to for ages and you finally gave me an opportunity." For the first time his cocky, Malfoy smirk was gone and he looked ... nervous?
"Wha ... for ages?"
"Well ... yea."
"I don't, I thought, weren't you just trying to make me mad?"
"No."
"Oh."
"Yea."
Scorpius stood up then and there they were, two feet away from each other, both quiet.
"Did you like it?" He asked again, just when she thought she might suffocate from the silence.
"Yes." She admitted, not trusting herself to say anything more. She took a few slow steps forward and this time she moved in to kiss him. It was slow and light and sweet, and for some reason knowing that they both wanted it made it so much better.
Scorpius wrapped an arm around her waist and and a hand found it's way into her hair, but it all felt less urgent, less like it was going to stop at any second than it had the first time. She melted into him again, her body falling softly against his as she moved her arms behind his neck and pulled him closer. It felt like they were there lost in each other forever before they broke apart.
"That was really nice." She said and instantly felt like an idiot. Nice?!
Scorpius chuckled with his forehead against hers and sighed. "Yea, it was really nice. I'm pretty sure I want to do that again."
"Me too." She smiled at him and he looked around again at the empty room.
"You know ," he said quietly. "I have it on good authority which rooms get checked during rounds."
Her eyes grew wide and she took a step back. "You want to go find a classroom and snog?!" She knew no one was around but she whispered anyway. There was no way she was going to let anyone hear her talking about snogging Scorpius.
He laughed again. "We don't JUST have to snog." He threw his book in his bag and pulled it over his head. "We have been known to have a conversation or two in the past." She bit her lip and watched him as he started walking. "Up to you."
She thought about her parents and her prefects badge and her dreams and she wanted to pack up her things and go to her room for the night, but she remembered the way her lips tingled and her body felt against his and the way he had looked so fragile when he told her he had wanted to kiss her for ages, and she couldn't. She walked, quickly, to her table and shoved her things away in her bag, pulling it on as she hurried to follow him, but tried to make it look like she wasn't following him. They passed one other student as they left the library and Rose wasn't even sure what her name was or what year she was in.
She followed him out of the library and down the corridors. Once they were off the beaten track she sped up to walk next to him and felt him reach out his hand. She put hers in his and felt heat spread up her neck and into her cheeks. What was she doing?
They turned and turned and turned again until Scorpius finally stopped at a classroom she was sure no one used anymore. They walked inside and she found that she was right. The desks were shoved up against one wall, leaving space for bookshelves full of old charms books. There was a heap of pillows and pouf in one corner. She looked at him suspiciously.
"I come here to practice. I'm pretty sure they haven't used this room in ages."
"Practice what? How many girls have you brought here to practice with?" She crossed her arms and stood very close to the door.
"Well, I bring all the girls here actually and we shag on the floor with the spiders." He smirked again and she glared at him. Part of her couldn't believe this was real or that he would really want her. She had never really considered someone wanting her before.
"You could have."
"Rose, I've never shagged anyone in my life and you are the only girl I've ever brought to this dusty old room." He walked over to the pile of pillows and pulled out his wand. "Scourgify!" He pointed his wand at them and cleaned them before move a few and sitting down.
Rose set her bag down and went to join him. She sat beside him and for a moment it was awkward again. She stared at the loose threads on on the pillows she was sitting on and waited. He reached over and grabbed her hand. She looked up at him and saw that he had that nervous look again. He liked to act cool and slick, but he had no idea what he was doing either.
"I love rain." She told him.
"Rain?"
"Yes. Rain. I like to listen to it and watch it roll down windows, and I even like to stand in it and feel it falling on my skin. Your turn."
"I like muggle clothes better than wizards robes. They are so much cooler."
"I once ate a whole batch of cookies and blamed Hugo and Al. I'd never done anything like it before and my parents believed me because I never lied."
"I once set fire to our table trying to hex my Dad. He'd taken away my broom because I did something ruddy and I was mad. I lost my broom for a month. It was the worst."
"I feel jealous of my parents and Uncle Harry sometimes because of who they are and what they've done. I wonder if I'll ever be good enough to make my own way."
He kissed her then for the first time since they had gotten to the abandoned Charms room. He pressed her down against the pillows and this was a new and exciting way to kiss him. His body was over hers as she responded, kissing him eagerly and loving it. "You're already good enough." He told her, rolling to his side next to her. "I'm jealous of Al. All the time. I hate being an only child. I see all of you and I wonder what it would be like to have that."
"You can have Hugo." She laughed and he shook his head.
"I think I'll pass."
She was silent for a long time as she waited to say what was on her mind. She didn't know how he would react, or how it would make him feel. She held his hand for a few minutes and enjoyed the tickle spreading up her arm as he rubbed circles into her palm. Finally, when the silence had gone on long enough, she said, "I'm worried my dad will hate me if he finds out I've been kissing you."
"I know." He wasn't surprised at all. She moved to her side and kissed him this time, one quick peck on his lips.
"So, what are we going to do?" She asked. Now that they had started kissing and she knew that he had been thinking about it for ages and she felt something flipping in her stomach nonstop, she didn't want to go back.
"Not tell him?"
"Someone will tell him." She had too many family members, too many loose tongues to worry about.
"Nobody needs to know." He said.
"What is this?" She asked, wondering if there was even anything to tell her father about.
"I don't know yet, but I like it."
Remembering that first night, hiding in the charms room, snuggled up on pillows, so awkward and unsure was so incredibly painful. Her chest ached and her eyes burned and she hated herself for falling in love with him when she knew even then he was not a boy she could take home to Dad. She looked over at him, walking beside her, and she wondered if anyone had ever taken him home to meet their dad.
"I wish it was raining." She told him and he smiled, letting her see her Scor again. Behind pain and whatever else had found it away in over the last five years, he was still there. "Where have you been?" She asked then and he shrugged.
"I bounced around working with different countries in law enforcement. Harry had this spot open up and he's been after me for years and I had run out of excuses for not taking him up on his extremely generous offers."
"Why did you leave?"
"The last six months at Hogwarts were the hardest of my life. I needed to get away." That was her fault. She had done that to him.
"And now?" What was she hoping for? That he came back for her?
"Now ... I don't know. I'm here."
And then the question that had been burning her spilled out, "Is there someone?"
He stopped walking and stared at her. She stopped too and looked into his eyes. "There is no one else, Rose." And then he was walking ahead of her and down the driveway of a house that looked as normal as any other and her heart was racing.
There was no one else.
