Chapter 3
With the arrival of the three Gryffindors there was a noticeable lifting of spirits in the Great Hall. The volume of conversations began to steadily increase as the rest of the students took their cue from the trio. The hall quieted down as the first years were sorted to the polite applause of their respective houses afterwards the Headmaster stood up to give his beginning of the year speech and the hall was once again consumed by conversations.
“Hey, Harry how was your summer?” Neville asked after he swallowed a mouthful of mashed potatoes.
“Nothing too interesting, just a lot of reading and running.” He replied looking back at his house mate. Over the summer Neville had grown and now stood almost shoulder to shoulder to Rons’ own 5’ 11” frame. He also must have been exercising during his time away from school because there was very little visible fat to be found on the once almost toddler like face. He sat with his back straight and shoulders noticeably broader and had a general air of confidence about him that wasn’t there before.
“Yeah, I could tell. The running, I mean, you look good mate. No glasses either? It’s like a whole new you. I like it.” He finished with a small encouraging smile.
“Thanks Nev.”
The other boys also began to comment on Harrys new appearance but before they could really get started on their own conversation their attention was drawn to the enchanted ceiling.
The ceiling that had once reflected the clear night sky sprinkled with the first glittering stars the evening began to swirl as if it were water circling a drain. A deafening roar could be heard although there were no signs of storm clouds. Faster and faster it spun making the students in the great hall nearly nauseous in their efforts to follow it. The stars once again began to slow but they were further in the distance than they had previously been and the once familiar constellations were no longer recognizable. As intriguing as these things were what held everyone’s attention was the truly massive castle floating in the night sky. It seemed as if it could easily house Hogwarts several times over. Its white stone walls gleamed with the reflected light both from within the structure and from the hundreds of torches that lined its walls setting it in stark contrast against the inky starlight sky in the background. Were it daylight it would easily be hidden amongst the clouds.
Everyone sat enthralled as the tableau they were looking at played out like the movies they had learned about in Muggle Studies. At once they went from admiring the many features of the castle to zooming though its bustling hallways. There were a cacophony of sounds to be heard. Dozens of what appeared to be servants were rushing back and forth to a bedroom located on the upper levels of the castle if the expansive balcony that could be seen from the doorway was any indication. The doorway opened into a suite that was large enough to hold the great hall. It was not decorated in the posh opulence normally found in a royals quarters but it was instead decorated in warm earthen tones. There was a huge stone fire place that housed a roaring fire on the right wall. In front of it, on a think fur rug, sat three small children holding different stuffed animals listening to an older child tell a story, they all had enraptured expressions on their face as they hung on every word they were told. Surrounding them were several sofas and chairs all well-worn with time and use that held two teenagers keeping watch over the younger children. All of the children were striking in appearance. They all had lustrous raven hair that seemed to suck in the flickering light of the fire and was head back by thin circlets of various designs with skin as pale as fresh cream and lips as red as ripe cherries. Interestingly enough all the children were boys.
Everyone turned towards an adjourning door leading to the masters chambers that there was still a steady flow of traffic in and out of.
A man, that could not have been more than 40 by the looks of him and bore a resemblance to the boys who also was wearing a golden circlet around his head, strode purposefully into the room.
“Is mama well papa?” One if the boys on the rug asked as he turned towards his father.
“Of course she is Samson.” He bent down and picked up his youngest son and sat in a chair placing him on his lap.
“Your mother is nearing the end of the birth. Your newest brother or sister will be here shortly.” he said addressing all of the children.
Another boy that came to sit at his feet giggled. “Papa we already know that we are to have a brother.”
“Oh do you now?” He looked down with a smirk and a raised brow.
“You know he’s right father.” Said his second born from his reclined position on the couch across from him.
There was a loud grunt that tapered off into an exhausted whimper from the bedchamber.
“Your majesty!”
The king jumped up with his son still in his arms and rushed into the room followed by the rest of his children. There they were greeted by a beautiful woman that sat up in the bed supported by a mountain pillows. There were still attendants wiping the sweat from her brow and rearranging the covers over her.
In her arms she held a small bundle close to her chest and cooed at it. She looked up and fixed clear amethyst colored eyes on her children and husband and gave them a small but genuine smile.
“Come, my sons, and meet your newest brother.” She beaconed. The man went to stand at the head of the bed next to his wife and the older children beside him while the younger children all clambered onto the bed to be closer to their mother and their new little brother. They were reminded by the healer, still standing to the side, to be careful of jostling the pair.
The woman lowered her precious cargo and everyone looked into the face of the newborn. His head was covered in little ringlets of the same color of his siblings. As everyone watched the baby sleep he began to move his tiny arms and legs back and forth and his little mouth scrunched up in a pout as he began to open his eyes. Small sounds of aggravation could be heard from the baby as more time passed.
“I believe he’s hungry my love.” The king said looking down at the pair with adoration.
“He wants milk mama.”
“Yes, love, he does. This little one is already quite demanding isn’t he?” She said with a chuckle while she pulled out her breast for the hungry infant. He immediately latched on and began to suckle vigorously. Everyone laughed at the ferocity that the baby went after his meal.
“Have you thought of a name yet mother?” asked the teenager standing closest to his father.
“Well Eldric I would say he kind of put me in the mindset of your great grandfather. What do you think dearest?” she asked looking once again towards her husband.
“Hmm.” He said looking around at his other children. “I think it’s a perfect name, love.” He bent down to kiss her forehead and gently ease the baby that had stopped feeding into his own arms.
“Are you ready to meet everyone little one?” He cooed to his son who only looked back at him with piercing eyes as dark as the night sky surrounding them and a serious expression as if to say ‘Let’s be done with it.’ “Alright then, here we go.” As he took the baby and stepped out onto the balcony that sat several stories above the courtyard a silence fell amongst those that were gathered. Holding the child securely in his arms he lifted him up for the people to see and declared in a voice that carried throughout the castle. “I present to you Prince Severus, the seventh son!!!”
The announcement was followed by the cheers of the thousands of subjects below that had come to be witness to the princes’ birth.
The king walked back inside to return the boy to his mother. He sat on the bed next to his wife, surrounded by his children, and watched as the small child fell asleep.
The scene began to swirl once more and returned to a familiar night sky. The occupants of the Great Hall sat in silence, meals completely forgotten, wondering what they had just witnessed. They looked at each nervously they had all noticed the resemblance of their potions master to the people in the vision? Memory? Daydream? No one knew exactly what to make of it.
Harry having noticed to the resemblance almost as soon as he saw the children glanced at the head table to see what the Professor thought about the whole thing. If it were possible the professor was even paler than he was just a few minutes ago. It was as if literally all the blood had been drained from his body and all that was left was a greyed husk. His eyes fixed to the cieling. A quick glance to his right showed the Headmaster had also lost a bit of color and was trying very hard to compose himself and conceal the small tell of shock he was experiencing. Harry knew that if anyone else dared to look they wouldn’t see anything amiss with the Headmaster but Harry was way more observant than people gave him credit for.
Everyone startled from their reverie when the Headmasters voice rang out. "Prefects please escort the students back to the dormitory. You may finish your meals in the common rooms."
TBC…..I hope I was able to portray that scene to you guys well enough.
