AN: So the end of chapter two apparently left people with one question in particular, why was Harry allowed to leave the office. I hope this chapter clears up some of the confusion that I caused at the end of the last chapter.
Hidden Truths of an Innocent Soul
Chapter 2.5
Dumbledore didn't even flinch when the door slammed shut behind Harry, he just closed his eyes and sighed sadly. He had been shocked to see the state Harry had arrived in, the black eye, and obvious cuts and bruises; he knew, just by looking at the small twelve-year-old, that things with the boy's relatives were far worse than even he had known.
“Dumbledore.” McGonagall's voice cut into his thoughts and he opened his eyes to look at his deputy Headmistress. He knew that McGonagall wanted nothing more than to go after Harry and bring him back, and Dumbledore was half tempted to let her go, get a confession out of the boy, make him tell them what had caused his numerous injuries, and force him to undergo the examination that Pomfrey undoubtedly wanted to insist upon.
“We have to tread cautiously with this, Minerva,” Dumbledore said, folding his hands on the desk. “When you dropped Harry off, and picked him up from his relatives, did you notice anything out of the ordinary? Other than his injuries of course,” Dumbledore said.
“When I took him there two weeks ago, I did not see his relatives at all. I assumed they were inside and Harry insisted that they would not like unexpected company during the holidays, as this is completely understandable, I allowed him to go inside alone,” McGonagall explained. “Picking him up today, however, he was already waiting outside when I arrived, he had no winter clothes on, and just looking at him…” McGonagall shook her head. “Albus, I do not think he should be allowed to return to those relatives of his,” she said and Dumbledore inclined his head in agreement.
“There is little that we can do at the moment, Minerva, unless Harry tells us what has been done to him., Our choices are to give him time and space, and hope he comes to us about this, or force him,” Dumbledore pointed out. “We will have to discuss this with the other teachers as well. I will call a staff meeting and we can discuss what can be done to rectify this without causing any more damage,” Dumbledore said.
“Harry is obviously in a lot of pain, physically and mentally,” Pomfrey spoke up, gaining the attention of the two teachers. “Forcing him to do anything he doesn't want to do, will do more harm than good,” she said. Even though it was something that didn't truly have to be said, Pomfrey felt as though she had to remind them that pressuring an abuse victim to do anything wasn't the best course of action.
Dumbledore nodded. “Of course, Poppy, it is something that I will mention at the meeting. In the meantime, if you could see about getting hold of Harry's medical records from the Muggle world; we must act quickly and carefully with this,” Dumbledore said.
“I will get started on that right away,” Pomfrey said and went straight to the floo. Dumbledore watched her go before looking back to McGonagall.
“If you can inform the other teachers of the staff meeting? I will meet you there,” Dumbledore requested and McGonagall gave a short nod before she too left, and Dumbledore was now alone in his office.
Closing his eyes again, he leaned back in his chair, wondering how he had misjudged someone so greatly. Though he had known how Lily's sister felt about magic, and knew that the woman had been jealous since childhood, he had foolishly hoped that that was something that could have been put aside for the sake of a child. And even though he had known since Harry had arrived at school, that the boy had not been treated properly, Harry was alive, and had seemed happy enough that Dumbledore had been willing to let it go.
Now he knew how foolish he truly had been; there was going to be a fight ahead of them, a fight to get Harry to open up to them, when he was already so closed off. Dumbledore dreaded to think how big of a problem this would be if it ever reached the papers, the whole wizarding world would be fighting for custody of the boy who lived, and that was the last thing that Harry needed.
Letting out a long sigh, Dumbledore stood up from his desk; he would first have the meeting with the other teachers. Out of everyone here at Hogwarts, Dumbledore hoped that there was someone that Harry would be willing to open up to.
TBC
Okay! I know it's wicked short, but as you can see there was a reason why Harry was allowed to leave the office. As they are just his teachers and not his guardians (because I am not doing the whole 'Dumbledore is Harry's magical guardian' thing) they have enough proof that Harry has been abused to start an investigation, however unless Harry admits to the abuse, there is nothing that they can do.
The first few chapters of this story are focusing mainly on how Harry deals with the abuse, and the fact that in his mind, when he asked for help, he was denied it. I will be revealing more in later chapters about what exactly happened to Harry during the two weeks with the Dursley's, as there is one incident in particular that has caused this kind of thinking.
If there are any more questions about this, please feel free to ask, and I will try and answer them! But only if it doesn't give away to much of what I have planned for Harry.
