Hermione had such a fun weekend, when Monday came, she did not want to get up and go to work. She was dreading it actually. Now that Malcolm was gone which was good news, however, she would now be completely on her own, doing all the work, until they found her another researcher, which could take a while.
Hermione groaned and got up to get dressed. She opened her wardrobe and smiled when she saw her dress hanging there for Friday night. “Friday can't get here fast enough,” she said as she selected her work robes and finished getting ready.
She arrived at the Ministry and took the elevator down to where her office was. She expected Mr. Durdrum and Mr. Gafter to call her into their offices to have a meeting about what happened on Saturday. She opened her office door and was shocked to find Remus Lupin sitting at her desk.
“What are you doing here?” Hermione said in a confused and surprised voice.
“I'm your new researcher,” he said with a bright smile.
“What, how?” Hermione stammered. She was delighted but confused.
“Kinsgley owled me on Saturday and asked if I wanted the job. Of course, I jumped right on it. How could I refuse?”
“But you’re not allowed...”
Remus interrupted her. “Kingsley said that since you are trying to find a cure...”
Now it was Hermione's turn to interrupt. “Not a cure. We will never be able to do that,” she said a little sad.
“Okay, a suppressor for the werewolf gene, what better researcher then an actually werewolf.”
Hermione laughed she knew that her bosses would not be happy with the decision. As it was, they thought Hermione’s project was a waste of time. At least that was the impression that they gave her. “You have no idea how happy I am to see you,” Hermione said as she hugged her former professor.
“I'm just glad to be working on such an important project with the brightest witch of her age.” Remus smiled.
“Stop, you’re embarrassing me. Let’s get to work. Something tells me it's going to be a productive day,” Hermione said with a smile.
Hermione's day turned even more interesting when Mr. Gafter burst into her office, not long after Hermione sent Remus to the archives to research the Wolfsbane potion effects. He demanded to know why that werewolf was working with her.
Hermione, although very annoyed at his anger towards Remus and her, calmly replied, “The Minister himself hired Mr. Lupin. If you don't like, it take it up with him, and please leave me to my work. I had nothing to do with the decision. I was surprised, but pleased, to find Mr. Lupin in my office this morning.”
“Why would you be pleased?” he asked more curious then angry.
“I know Mr. Lupin very well, and I know he will do the job, unlike Malcolm, who would make any excuse not to work, but you didn't seem to have a problem with him.”
“Actually I did,” Mr. Gafter said as he sat down. His whole demeanour changed in an instant. Hermione wasn't sure what to make of it. He seemed more remorseful.
“I knew Malcolm would not be a good assistant, but his uncle is on the potions committee.”
“Wait, his uncle is Mr. Durdrum?” Hermione asked in awe. “Talk about nepotism.”
Mr. Gafter cleared his throat. “Yes.”
“That clears up some things,” Hermione said annoyed as she sat down at her desk. “No wonder he brushed me off when I told him the reason the project is taking so long is because of Malcolm, and his refusal to do any work.”
Mr. Gafter hung his head in shame. “I ignored everything that was going on, because Robert Durdrum is the one that okays the projects. When he gets wind of this...” Mr. Gafter paused and looked at Hermione.
“What?” Hermione asked, waiting for him to finish his sentence.
“He could shut you down. I don't want that. What you are doing is important it needs to continue.”
Hermione closed her eyes. “Kings... The Minister would not put this project in jeopardy. He knows how much I have worked on it.”
“I hope you’re right,” he said as he got up. “I have nothing against Remus Lupin; I just know how Robert is when things are not done his way. I hope this works out and you complete your research and make that potion that will change the genetic makeup of a werewolf.”
“Thank you. Me too.”
“I will see you later,” Mr. Gafter said as he left her office.
“Well, that was interesting!” Hermione said to herself. She could not believe that Mr. Gafter was actually pleased with her work and research. She figured he hated her, or at least her project. She had no idea he was only acting that way towards her because of Robert Durdrum. Hermione head was filled with so much new information she had no idea how to process it all.
When Remus came back from the archives, arms loaded with books, he found Hermione sitting at her desk with a look of confusion on her face.
“What's wrong?” Remus asked concerned.
“Where do I begin?” Hermione moaned.
Hermione filled Remus in on her conversation with Mr. Gafter; by the end, Remus was shaking his head. “I know Mr. Durdrum, his father worked on the Werewolf Capture Unit. He was a bastard, never liked werewolves. Whenever he went on a job, he would use any reason to rile up the werewolves so he could arrest them. He was ruthless and he didn't care. That is probably why the Minister hired him. I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Durdrum burst through here and start shutting down everything. I would owl Kingsley now and tell him to find someone else. I don't want to put your project in jeopardy.”
“Remus, you are not putting this project in jeopardy, and you are not leaving. I'm going to contact Kingsley and figure this out.”
Hermione decided to skip the owl to Kingsley and go up to his office and see if we were available to talk in person. She was lucky; she caught him as he was leaving for lunch.
“Minister, can I talk to you for a minute?” Hermione asked when she saw him in the hallway.
“Talk as we walk,” Kinsley said as they entered the empty elevator.
“I just want to thank you for getting me a new researcher so quickly, but Remus is a bit concerned that his presence might put the project in jeopardy. Do I have anything to worry about?” Hermione asked concerned.
“I would never hire someone if I thought they would put any project in jeopardy,” he said as he winked at her.
“I'm just concerned about what Mr. Durdrum, might say, or do,” Hermione whispered.
“Robert has enough to worry about right now,” Kingsley said as they reached the lobby. “Don't you have work to do?” he asked as he exited.
Hermione just stood in shock. She had no idea what Kinsgley meant by his statement. “Okay,” she said in a dazed voice as she descended to her office.
Hermione was please by the end of the workday. She and Remus had a very productive day. Remus broke down the properties of the Wolfsbane potion, and Hermione researched what she could on the genetic makeup of an Animagus. There was very little information, but that did not discourage her. This is what her project was all about.
As Hermione and Remus were finishing up for the day there was a knock on her door. “Come in.”
“Good afternoon, Miss Granger. How are you this fine day?” Draco said with a sickly sweet smile.
“Why are you is such a good mood, Malfoy?” Hermione grinned.
“Oh, because Robert Durdrum was fired, and Severus is now the head of the Potions committee,” he said with a bright grin.
“What!” Hermione and Remus said at the same time.
“You didn't hear?” Draco said nonchalantly.
“The Minister implied that...” Hermione began.
“Kingsley was always one to be mysterious. There was been an internal investigation ongoing on all Ministry employees that have been around since the war.”
“Really?”
“Very few had known about it. It was just a formality to make sure that there wasn't anyone left in the Ministry who was trying to take over the world,” he said with a half laugh.
Hermione wasn't sure what to say. She just shook her head in disbelief.
“Was Durdrum trying to take over the world?” Remus asked. “He doesn't seem the kind that he could pull it off.”
“He wasn't. But during his review, they found that he was pushing potions through for usage without them actually being properly tested. He also had this habit of hiring family; who are severely under-qualified. Which cost you and other departments time, energy, and that all mighty Galleon.” Draco explained.
Hermione started laughing, she had no idea her day was going to be so crazy. “What is going on today? It's as if I Apparated into an alternate universe.”
“I was thinking the same thing,” Remus said.
“I just came down to let you know of this new development. You are now to report to Severus. He will probably want to be updated on your progress for today. Apparently, Durdrum didn't keep any notes on this project. At least we haven't found them yet.”
Hermione shook her head, “We?”
Draco smiled, “I've been apart of the investigation.”
“Really? You?”
“Hey, I've proven over the years that I am very trustworthy,” Draco said in a mocked hurt voice.
“Oh really,” Hermione said as she crossed her arms over her chest.
“I became friends with you didn't I,” Draco said wagging his eyebrows.
Hermione considered this for a moment, before she broke out in hysterical laughter. “Oh that must be it,” she said when she finally caught her breath. Draco was laughing just as hard. Thing had definitely changed over the last six years since the one year anniversary of the end of the war. The Wizarding world was a very different place, every one seemed relieved, and more relaxed. Draco and Hermione had actually become good friends and co-workers.
“Well, I'm glad that I could give you a laugh today. Now if you will excuse me, I need to inform a few more people about what has happened. Go talk to Severus before you leave today.” Draco reminded her as he left.
Hermione was in shock, she could not believe all these turn of events in the past few days. She was starting to wonder if she had a fairy godmother watching over her, and granting her secret wishes.
“Go and talk to Severus, Hermione. I will finish here and get all the research put away and organized for tomorrow,” Remus said to her as he started to gather parchment and books.
“Okay, I'll come back down to grab notes and my things when I am done.”
“No, I will take the notes home and do more research, you go home and have a relaxing evening.”
Hermione smiled. She was so glad that Remus was here, he is the only one she would trust to do work at home. She could not be happier with her new researcher.
“Thanks, you have no idea how much I appreciate you. I wish Malcolm was fired sooner!”
Remus smiled at her. “I'm glad to be working on such an important project with the best witch for the job.”
Hermione blushed a bit. “I'm sure that someone else would have...”
“No, nobody has every tried to change the behaviour of a werewolf, at least not they way you are. We are grateful for all you are doing. Now, go talk to Severus, before he comes down here and relives his Hogwarts days on you.”
Hermione visible shuttered. “We don't want that. Although, I could be walking into the snake pit, so to speak.”
Remus laughed, “He isn't as bad since the war ended, and he left Hogwarts. Although don't bring those two up.”
“Trust me I won't. None of us want to relive the war, or when Severus was teaching,” Hermione said as she left.
“Good luck, Hermione,” Remus whispered as he finished cleaning up.
~*~*~
Hermione knocked on Severus' office door.
“Enter!” a booming voice said on the other side.
Hermione took a calming breath, opened the door and walk confidently in to the office.
The office was bare with a few boxes stacked in the corner. Severus was putting pickled creatures in jars on a shelf behind his desk.
“So those were his.” Hermione thought as she watched Severus for a few moments. She remembered those pickled creatures from her Hogwarts days.
Severus turned around. “Can I help you. Oh it's you, Miss Granger,” Severus said in a not-so-surprised voice.
“Nice to see you too, Professor Snape.”
Severus let out an annoyed sigh, “I am not your professor anymore, I am your boss, and call me Mr. Snape.”
“Okay, Mr. Snape. You wanted to see me?”
“Yes, I would like a full progress report on your research on my desk by tomorrow morning. Apparently, Robert Durdrum didn’t think it was necessary for you to give weekly reports.”
Hermione swelled with anger. “I did give him weekly reports! I gave him one on Friday.”
Severus shook his head, “I don't have one, it was not in his files, I need one by tomorrow so I can review this project.”
“Okay,” Hermione said, it looks like she was not going to get that relaxing night off. “Was there anything else?”
“No, you may go now,” Severus said as he went back to decorating his office.
Hermione shook her head, some things never changed. Before she left, Severus turned back to her. “Is your new researcher working out?”
Hermione looked a bit surprised, “Yes very, much better then the last one.”
“Good, I'm glad to hear that my recommendation is working out.”
Hermione was shocked. “Your recommendation?”
“Yes. Miss Granger, please pick your jaw up from the floor. Despite my personal feeling towards Mr. Lupin, I do think he will be the best for this project,” Severus said.
“Thank you,” Hermione said in a small voice.
“You’re welcome, now go do your work and leave me in peace,” Severus said as he turned his back on her to finish what he was doing.
Hermione left and went back down to her office. Remus was there waiting for her.
“Did you know that Snape was the one that recommend you for this job?” she asked Remus in disbelief.
Remus smiled. “No I didn't, I thought it was Kingsley, since he was the one who owled me about the job. Although I shouldn't be surprised. He does owe me a life debt, after all, I did save his life. I guess this was his way of paying me back.”
Hermione smiled, if Remus didn't get to the Shrieking Shack when he did, Severus would not have survived from the blood loss.
“Maybe. Too bad, he didn't extend that courtesy to me. I need to write a full report on the progress of the project and have it by tomorrow. Apparently, Mr. Durdrum didn't keep any of them, including the one I just gave him on Friday.”
“I'm sorry, I would help you, but I only know what I did today not everything that has happened up to this point.”
Hermione smiled, “It's okay, I will probably be able to write it in a couple of hours, and we did so much today, I don't want to leave anything out.”
“Well we are all set here. I will take these notes home to research more, unless you want them so you can write your report.”
“No that's okay, I will take my notes and work a report from that. I don't want to include any information unless we know all the properties of them, first.”
“Well then, I will see you tomorrow, boss,” Remus smiled.
“That is a little weird. Nobody has called me boss before. I kind of like it. But it just seems wrong coming from you,” Hermione laughed.
Remus smiled. “I will see you tomorrow,” he said as he left.
Hermione gathered her notes and left to go home.
When Hermione arrived home, she quickly started her report. Once she got going, it didn't take her long to write it. When she was done, she had written a detailed five-page report on the project. She realized that she needed a name for her project. Maybe Remus could help her figure it out.
She owled Luna and told her everything that had happened during her workday. She still could not believe it herself how everything was working out. Something was bound to go wrong soon. Her mind kept wandering to her date on Friday. She started to wonder if that was what was going to go wrong. She told herself to stop worrying and that everything was going to be fine. But when she went to bed that night she still wasn't so sure that everything was going to be perfect, she had the nagging feeling in the back of her mind that something wasn't quite right.
