The days wore on and the staff was getting as worried as the DA. Their last meeting in April, they were dueling. Before calling it a night, they were treated to a short duel between Severus and Remus. Madame Pomphrey was on hand to help heal the major wounds. The group watched in stunned silence as the two men ducked, turned, blocked, circled, jumped, and cast as fast as they could. In the end, Severus cast a spell to blast Remus back to the end of the stage, ending the duel. He smirked as they bowed and took a seat.
Harry smiled as Madame Pomphrey checked them over. “That is what we are up against. Only expect it to be much worse and possibly more than one at a time. They will use harsher spells and more dangerous spells.”
Draco nodded. “They don't care if you are a student or not. If you get in their way, they won't hesitate to kill you.” He frowned as Neville raised a hand. “What is it Nev?”
Neville frowned as everyone looked at him. “I just want to say one thing.” His eyes hardened. “If ever given the chance, I want Bellatrix. I have a couple scores to settle with that bitch.”
Pansy grinned at him. “Neville, we will help you get to her. And we will be behind you the entire way.” She patted his shoulder. “If anyone deserves to rid this world of her it's you.” The others nodded in agreement. “Anyone else want to claim anyone?”
“Blaise and I get the Lestrange brothers.” Draco glared at the thought of the two men. “We have a score to settle with them.” Blaise nodded from beside him.
Severus spoke up from his chair. “Save Dolohov for Hermione. Remus gets Wormtail.” He smirked at the man. “Unless you want the snake.”
“No, I want the rat.” Remus growled at the thought of his former friend. “He's mine.” He blushed when they all looked at him with wide eyes. “Sorry, it's getting a little close to the full moon.”
Hermione smirked from where she was writing it all down. “Anyone else?Other than Harry gets snake face.” When she saw two hands go up, she frowned. “Who do you two want?”
Colin Creevey and his brother stepped forward. “We each want Crabbe and Goyle. The fathers that is.” He frowned as he looked at his brother. “They were the ones who killed our aunt and uncle. We saw them because we were visiting at the time. We hid our cousin from them.”
Hermione frowned and wrote it down.”Done.” She looked up to see Severus looking thoughtful. “You can all go unless there is anything else? Neville, I have something to show you if you can hang back for a moment.” When the others left, she turned to Neville and handed him a paper.
Neville read over the paper and grinned up at her. “you want to try this on my parents?” When she nodded, he smirked. “How soon?”
“It's ready now Mr. Longbottom. If your grandmother approves it, we could do it this weekend.” Severus smirked at him. “Also, I know a few things that could help you when facing Bellatrix. Go owl your grandmother and tomorrow after lunch I can show you a few things for fighting her.” The boy nodded and took off. He and Hermione then joined Remus, Draco, and Harry. “Any ideas yet?” He took the parchment Remus handed him. “Looks promising.”
Remus grinned. “If your potion works, this spell may take out the Horcruxes as well as Voldy. You would need to kill the snake with one of 3 things though. Harry used the sword of Gryffindor in second year.”
Harry grinned. “I can give you some basilisk fangs. They still have the venom.” He shrugged when they all looked at him. “The chamber has a preservation spell on it.” He gasped when Draco punched his arm. “What was that for?”
“What was that for? You asked me a particular question in the fall. You had the answer all along!” Draco rolled his eyes and sighed. “If you ever ask me again, I'm going to hit you harder.”
Harry flushed. “I didn't think about it til now.” He shrugged as the others looked at them in confusion. “Don't ask. Do you want me to get the fangs?”
“Yes, and some other venom from the sac behind the fangs if possible.” Severus frowned at him. “I think one vial should be enough. I can use it to make some antivenin.”
Harry nodded. “I can do that.” He looked around at them. “Do you think we can be ready by the end of the school year?”
“The potion only needs a couple more tests and we will be ready.” Hermione smiled at him. “If we make the potion correctly that is.”
Severus smirked at her. “You can work on it during your free periods. But ONLY if I am free and in the evenings I don't have patrols. You need to keep studying for your other NEWTS.”
Hermione frowned as the others laughed. “But that only gives me a couple nights a week to work on it!”
Severus smirked again. “I am sure you can manage to budget your time accordingly. You forget that I will also be working on it.” He leaned in closer when she glared at him. “If you have a problem with it, we can always just stop working on it.” When she gasped, he continued. “Take it or leave it.”
“Fine!” She grabbed her things and headed for the door.
Severus grinned as he watched her leave. When he turned back to the others, he saw them staring. “What? None of you ever challenged her like that?” When they shook their heads, he laughed. “Well, she's as bad as I was and the only way I managed to get everything done was by someone making me.” He headed towards the door as the others followed him laughing.
Two weeks later, Hermione turned to Neville excitedly after reading the letter she had gotten. “Neville! The potion is working!”
Neville took the letter she handed to him and read it. “That is amazing! What's the next step?”
“I have to do some researching!” She started to get up but was held down by an unseen force. “Harry? Are you doing something?”
Harry laughed and shook his head. “Not me.” He motioned to the head table.
Severus raised his brow as he smirked behind his cup of coffee. “I told you she would get up.” His wand was in his hand on the table and aimed right at her.
Remus laughed as she glared at the man. “She looks ticked.” He stopped in surprise. “Is her bracelet starting to glow?”
Hermione gasped when her bracelet began to glow. “Oh no!” She grabbed her things and ran out the doors, quickly noticing that Remus, Severus, and the Headmaster had already left. She jumped as they rounded the corner. “Professors!” She ran up to them with Harry and Ron behind her.
Albus ushered them over to an unused hallway nearby. “Miss Granger, there is nothing to worry about. I did some more digging on the charms on your bracelet.” He smiled at her. “I see the book is the charm that is glowing. Tell me, what were you going to do right before it started to glow?”
“I was going to do some more research for Neville.” She frowned when the men all snickered, Harry too. “What's wrong with that?”
Harry grinned at her. “You promised Severus that you would work on it at certain times. That the rest of the time was for your other classes.” When she blushed, he laughed. “You forgot about that didn't you?” When she nodded, he looked at the Headmaster. “Is that why the book is glowing? Because she promised that?”
“It is.” The Headmaster smiled at them. “Severus and I came across some spells and figured out that each charm represents something and is charmed somehow to respond.” He smiled when it stopped glowing. “When it is satisfied, it will stop glowing. It is tuned to you.”
She smiled. “Wow, That is amazing. It's like my own personal schedule!” She grinned when Ron snorted in amusement. “It's fine by me! You guys won't have to remind me!”
Severus smirked at her. “Indeed. Apparently, someone is looking out for you. Each charm is protected differently. The book must be for your studying and the drink is probably for fluids.”
Remus nodded. “One for food, one for drinks, one for your studying, one for sleep, and one for medical attention. We think they will glow a different color for different levels. Such as yellow for caution and red for stop or immediate need. It was glowing yellow so that was warning you not to go study for that topic.”
Hermione nodded. “I can deal with that. And I will never take it off either. Didn't you say there was a charm on it so I could keep it on me at all times? That protects it from soap, water, and other elements?” When the man nodded, she grinned. “Perfect!”
Severus frowned at her. “Make sure you follow it. With your other NEWTS right around the corner, we can't have you overdoing yourself.”
“I promise I will.” She looked at them. “Is that all? We need to get to the library for study group.” When they nodded, she grabbed Ron and Harry's arms and tugged them towards the library. “Good evening!”
The men watched them leave before Remus broke the silence. “That kind of thing would be perfect for portkeys.”
Severus barked out a laugh. “Remus, if someone needs that many portkeys, then they are obviously up to something. They might as well just get one of those flying cars.” He shook his head as an idea came to him. “But it gives me an idea though. Aurors and other people who regularly go in and out of the country could put their individual portkeys on a bracelet and just touch the portkey they want to use.” He smirked at the other two. “We can work on that after we get rid of snake face.”
Albus chuckled as they headed off. “Now if only we knew who sent it to her.” He saw them nod and shrug. “Have a nice evening gentlemen!” They waved as he turned towards his office.
As the final exams drew closer, the students grew both worried and antsy. Especially the older students who were in the DA. They had their final meeting of the year the Wednesday before exams started. Harry sighed. “We all know what could be coming. Tonight we will be doing mini duels. We will each duel everyone else. We will split into 2 groups and will rotate to the next person after 2 minutes. We will then take a break. No dark or hurtful spells!”
Remus watched them divide up and walked around watching as they dueled each other. He smiled as they finished up. “Well done! I see many of you improving with each fight. The speed and accuracy is getting much better. This time, I want group 1 to remain in place, and group 2 will circle around each person. When you are done, I have a room set up to let you work on the harder and more serious spells. If you want to try it, you can even try the unforgivables, though only the avada won't work since nothing is alive.”
Severus joined them with some items shortly after they started their second round. He smirked at Remus. “I'll go get the mannequin ready.” Once they were done, they sat down with drinks and snacks. Severus grinned as he stepped up to the front. “You will take turns going into that room. Once inside, the door will close behind you. When you feel you can't do any more, just say end. The door will not open unless you do. Do not tell anyone what you saw in there. We will discuss it once everyone has had their turn.”
Neville watched him smirk. “Is someone in there?”
“There is a mannequin in there that will be your target. The room is set up as a simulation and the mannequin will move around.” Severus watched them look at each other worriedly. “You will have 5 minutes each. Who wants to go first?”
Four students stood up and looked at each other before laughing. Draco smirked as he looked at the golden trio. “It figures. I'll go first since I'm the odd one out.” He strolled over to the door and opened it. He gasped as he entered. “SHIT!” The door slammed shut behind him. About 5 minutes later, he came barging out the door and fell down. “Bloody hell!”
Remus helped him up as the others stared in horror. “Who is next?”
“I'll go!” Hermione grinned and headed in. Nothing was heard for 5 minutes until she walked back out with a tired smirk. “Next!”
The others followed suit with many students swearing once they stepped in. Severus laughed quietly each time. Once everyone had taken their turn, he spoke up. “Does anyone have any questions? Other than are those real? The answer to that is yes, they are real robes and a real mask. You need to get used to seeing them.”
“Before you start, we have something for you professor.” Ginny smiled at him. “It's to thank you for your help, and everything else.” She smiled as Harry handed him a small box. “Since Harry broke your link to him, we know he will be looking for revenge. Hopefully this will help.”
Severus opened the box and found a black leather bracelet. He could feel the power and spell work coming off it. “What spells are on here?” He smiled and wrapped it around his left wrist.
“Some advanced protection spells.” Hermione smirked at him. “We came up with all the different protection spells we could think of and Professor Flitwick had Harry place them on the bracelet.”
Severus smiled quickly. “Thank you. I appreciate it.” He pulled his sleeve back down and looked at them. “Now, does anyone know why we did this room exercise?”
“Because we need to be ready for anything, especially the death eaters.” Luna smiled at him. “We need to not show fear when we face them.”
“Correct.” Remus stepped forward as Severus entered the room. “Just this once you will see how they really are. You will then each take turns going back in there until you are comfortable with the image of them. Harry and Professor Snape will show you with the spells used tonight.” He moved them back against the wall and cast a shield over them as Harry moved opposite the door. When Severus exited the room in the death eater garb, the DA was shocked. Severus fired off the first shot and the fight was on.
The DA watched as the room lengthened and the duo ran, dodged, cast, and fought with the simple spells, as well as some more advanced ones that they had agreed on before the meeting. After 5 minutes, Severus took off his mask. The group was staring at them in silence. Severus quickly returned to the room and redressed the mannequin. When he rejoined them, he looked them over. “Now when you go in there, I want you to remember what you just saw.”
One by one, they went back in the room. By the end of the night, they were all feeling a little bit better about their abilities. Throughout the following week, the staff noticed them practicing wand movements during meals and when walking the halls. Even the Slytherins were quiet and somewhat subdued. Once the final tests were over, they all gravitated in small groups.
Severus sat in his sitting room looking at the leather bracelet he was given. The book he got on Valentine's Day was on the table in front of him. He and Albus were waiting for Harry to arrive. He ran a finger over the title of the book. It had bothered him when he couldn't find out who gave it to him. Only a few people knew about the collection he used to have. He also had a feeling he might not see it again after the upcoming battle. He jumped when Harry knocked on the door. “Come in.”
Harry entered and closed the door behind him. He felt the wards go back up. “What's going on?”
“I have a favor to ask.” Severus motioned to a chair next to him. “Have a seat.”
Albus smiled from another chair. “It's alright my boy. You are only here as a witness.” Once the boy was seated, Albus turned back to Severus. “Go ahead.”
Severus moved the book out of the way and grabbed a quill before beginning to write. “Harry, you know the dark lord will stop at nothing to get to you or me. I am making the necessary provisions in case he succeeds.”
Harry's jaw dropped. “I understand Severus. I had thought about doing that but was told I was too young. Now that I had my birthday, do you think they would allow it?”
Albus handed him a piece of parchment. “Write it now. I will sign it and make a pensive memory of it so it will be official. Severus can be your witness.”
Harry nodded, took a quill, and began to write. He stopped every once in a while to think about something.”Did he show you the gift we gave him? Hermione thought of it after she got her gift on Valentine's Day. She looked up some of the stronger charms and added one of her own.”
“She did?” Severus looked up at him in surprise. “What was it?”
“I don't know.” Harry shrugged as he went back to writing. “Knowing her, it's an old form of protection but a damned good one.” He sighed as he finished writing. He looked back through it and signed his name. “Done.” He handed it to Severus and took the one he was handed. They read through each other's will. “You know she will flip if we have to do this.” He shook his head as he signed the man's will.
“I only trust a few people with certain things. Albus didn't want anything so it falls to only a few others.” He signed Harry's will and handed it to Albus. “Thank you Harry.”
Harry nodded as he watched Albus read through them and sign them. “It's nothing. Though I want to ask you to do something.” When the man sat back and nodded, he took a breath. “Because you will need it more than I will, I want you to take my cloak. If the battle happens soon like we think it will, I want you to use it.”
Severus sighed. “Ok, I will use it.” He frowned as Albus stood up with their wills. “Thanks Albus, I hope we won't have to use them.”
Albus nodded. “I too hope we don't need to use them.” He nodded to Harry. “I suggest you all sleep in clothes from now on.”
Severus frowned. “I already do Albus. Remus and I have the DAD assigned to specific areas and they are awaiting the signal.”
“I already have them sleeping in their clothes.” Harry smirked at their shocked faces. “After the Department of Mysteries, I started wearing my regular clothes like tees and sweatpants or shorts.”
Severus smirked at him. “At least you are prepared.” He looked at the clock. “We better head to bed. We will need as much rest as we can. He may attack at any time.” He took the cloak Harry handed him and nodded.
Albus stood up and ushered Harry to the door. “goodnight Severus.” He followed Harry out the door.
Severus sighed and grabbed another piece of parchment. After writing a few paragraphs with a dict o quill. He called for a house elf. “Please deliver this right away. Make sure it gets read.” He sighed as the elf popped out. He then showered and headed for bed. The next morning, he was sitting in the Room of Requirement with a simple breakfast on the table in front of him. He was admittedly nervous. When he heard the door open, he sucked in a quiet breath. The person slowly walked in and around his chair. He smiled. “Good morning.”
Hermione's jaw dropped as she dropped into the empty chair and stared at him. She shook her head and blushed. “Good morning Severus.”
“You probably have a few questions. Let me explain first.” He took a sip of his coffee and looked at her. “I wanted to let you know I sent that charm bracelet. You already found out it can be changed to a necklace. You are an intelligent woman and you deserve every chance you can to get to live your life.”
Severus, I don't know what to say. I am flattered actually.” She smiled at him. “You didn't need to tell me.” She then looked at the book sitting next to him. “I have to admit to sending you the book. I knew about your old ones and when I found it, I had to get it for you.”
Severus shook his head and laughed. “well then, this next part should be easy.” He looked at her solemnly. “If anything happens to me, Albus has filed my will. You are keyed to my wards with Albus, Harry, and Draco. I gave you the right to all the books you want.”
“I am honored Severus.” She smiled at him sadly. “I hope you don't have to use that will for a very long time. Now, we should probably eat.”
He nodded and laughed. As they ate, he noticed her deep in thought. “Hermione, what's wrong?”
“I'm worried.” She smiled weakly at him. “There are so many things I had hoped to do before I died. I may not get to do some of them.”
“That is understandable.” Severus sighed. “Hermione, that bracelet has another charm on it that the others don't know about. If I am still alive, it will let me know if you become unarmed and in mortal danger. If that happens, I will do whatever I can to help you.”
“I don't want anyone to sacrifice themselves for me.” She frowned at him. “You have already given so much to this cause. But, your bracelet has a similar charm.” She smirked when he smiled.
“Harry gave me his cloak to use. I won't get very far from you two if I can help it.” He smiled and stood up. “I also have some basilisk fangs and daggers just in case.”
“Ok Severus, I trust you.” She stood up and walked around to him. She froze as an alarm sounded. “What is that?”
The Headmaster's voice sounded throughout the school. “all students to your houses immediately!”
Severus frowned. “It's started.” He put a hand on her shoulder. “Be careful Hermione. You and Harry are ready for this. You both need to survive.”
She nodded before turning and heading towards the door. He was right behind her. She paused and turned to him. “You be careful too Severus.” She leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips before heading back to the door.
Severus watched her go with a sad smile. Taking a deep breath, he pulled out Harry's cloak and called an elf. “Please take this back to my chambers.” He then headed out to the main entrance. He arrived in time to see Harry down the potion. “Are you ready?”
“Yes.” Harry waited for the DA to finish gathering. “The younger ones are with the houses and a few order members. You know what to do. Try to stay in eye sight of each other. Back to back if needed. Good luck.” He turned to see a silver dagger being held out to him. “What's that for?”
“You may need it.” Severus handed it to him. “I have enough for myself.” He then looked at the remaining group consisting of Ron, Hermione, Draco, and Pansy. “Remember, his closest and worst will be nearest to him. Be careful and be aware. I will let you know when I am nearby under Harry's cloak.”
“Constant vigilance.” Ron nodded to them. “Yell out if you see the snake.”
“I will remain under the cloak until I get to the snake but I will help as best as I can.” Severus swung the cloak up and over himself as they headed out. “Get ready.”
As the wards fell, the death eaters charged. Severus was surprised as students paired up with a staff or order member. He quickly started moving around helping them take out death eaters. As the fighting wore on, people were replaced and students found themselves being pushed to their limits. The light was winning. Severus frowned when he heard a loud cackling laugh. “Bellatrix.” He looked up to see Ginny and Neville being backed up around a corner. Ginny was hit with a freezing spell and Neville fired off a similar spell.
Severus snuck up behind her and cast a tripping hex before quickly hiding his wand again. She was caught off guard by his spell and when she looked around, Neville got his chance. He grinned evilly as she looked back to see him casting the spell. “Sectumsempra!” He laughed as the cutting hex hit her throat. “Just so you know, my parents are regaining their memories. Rot in hell Bitch! He sent the spell again and watched her body slump to the ground before snatching up her wand and snapping it. He turned and helped Ginny. “Thanks Snape., saw the wand.” He felt a pat to his shoulder as the man turned and headed back to Harry.
Severus frowned when he saw a group of death eaters. In the center was a pale looking hand. “Shit.” He looked around for the snake and found her nearby in a protective bubble. He closed in on the group and began sending spells at the bubble, moving after casting it so the dark lord couldn't pinpoint him. He silently cast a disillusionment charm on himself so his wand could stay out from under the cloak and still be unseen. When the bubble finally disappeared, he took his chance. He pocketed his wand, pulled out a dagger and basilisk fang, and charged. He ran through the group knocking people down, sliced the fang and dagger at the snake's head, and followed through out the other side of the group. He turned in time to see the snake's head fall to the ground. He pocketed the dagger and fang and grabbed his wand.
“Who got my Nagini?” Voldemort turned around as more death eaters fell When those around him stopped falling, he caught sight of movement of a cloak. “Potter.”
“Wrong!” Severus pocketed the cloak and ended his spell. His wand was aimed at the dark lord. “I did it.”
“Severus.” the man circled with Severus. “You have ignored my summons.”
“I have no mark to be summoned with.” Severus smirked and showed his left arm. “you are a delusional monster.”
“Impossible!” Voldemort stopped and stared at the blank skin, unaware that Harry was now behind him. “Nobody can remove my mark!”
“You aren't the most powerful wizard alive, neither is Dumbledore. In fact, it is my own long lost cousin.” Severus smirked as Harry began to chant his spell. He began casting spells at the man. “For the record, I was never your man, only spy for the light.” He grinned when Voldemort's eyes narrowed. “That's right, I was the spy all these years.” He saw Harry nod. “Teamwork, trust, and love will always win. Goodbye. Sectumsempra!”
“Sectumsempra!” The two slicing hexes hit the man at the same time. Severus's spell hit the front while Harry's hit the back. Both hit the torso and neck, effectively beheading the man. The remaining death eaters collapsed in cries of pain. Some managed to apperate out before being caught but most were contained. A dark cloud lifted from the body and disappeared in a black fire. When the bright light died down, Severus was cradling Harry's unconscious form. Severus took a deep breath, placed his hand on the boy's forehead, and closed his eyes. The people around them stared as white light engulfed his hand and moved into Harry's forehead. When it died down, Severus slumped over. He smiled when Harry groaned and opened his eyes. “Welcome back.”
Harry grinned at him. “It's nice to be back. How long was I out?”
“Only a few minutes.” Minerva smiled down at them. “That was amazing you two. The papers will be spouting off about you for a while.”
“Great.” Both of them groaned before laughing. Harry let her help them up. He gasped as he fell back against Severus, knocking them both down. He laughed as they sat up. “Maybe we should wait a few minutes.”
“Obviously.” Severus smirked at him as the rest of the DA joined them on the ground. “How bad is our side?”
“Some wounded and a couple taken to Mungo's. But no deaths on our side.” Neville grinned. “Thanks to you, I got rid of Bellatrix. Ginny got a couple with some blood boiling curses.”
“Hermione kicked Dolohov's butt. He didn't even stand a chance cause he was too slow.” Ron laughed as she was carried over to them by Hagrid. “she is one of the more seriously wounded. But it could have been much worse if she hadn't turned. Was still firing off spells from the ground.”
Hermione shrugged. “I only did what I was taught. Anyone else get the person they wanted?”
“Yeah!” Draco and I got the Lestranges. Draco's died but mine is seriously injured and off to Azkaban.” Blaise grinned at them. “Pansy and the others got theirs too. In all, I think from the DA alone, at least 5 of our targets are dead. None by an avada. So we did pretty good.”
Albus limped up to the group. “Splendid work everyone. Aurors have taken any death eaters and we are free to head to the infirmary. Does anyone need helped? Hagrid, I need you to help me in the forest with the centaurs and other creatures.”
Severus stood up and helped Harry up. He took Hermione from Hagrid and motioned to the school. “Everyone who needs fixed up, follow me.” He headed towards the school and up to the Infirmary. “How bad is your wound.”
“Well, it gets worse almost every minute. I think it was a dark curse. But it is on top of a regular cut.” She hissed as he began to walk up the stairs. “Any jarring makes it hurt worse. But I know you can't help it.” She smiled up at him.
Severus carried her into the Infirmary and towards the back of the room. “Poppy, I have to get something for her wound. It is a dark curse so don't touch it.” He set her down on a cot and cast a spell to make sure it was the curse he thought it was. “I will be right back.” He ran to the Infirmary office and took the flew to his rooms. When he returned, he smirked at her bracelet. “Harry, could you go get her some water please? She needs some fluids.” Her bracelet was red on both the cup charm and the medical symbol. The boy nodded and ran to get some water. “Now, I need you to get changed but into shorts. Can you do that if I got you some help?” She nodded and he motioned Pansy over. “Help her get changed but try not to move her too much.” He pulled the screen around the bed to give them some privacy.
When Pansy pulled back the curtain, Hermione was whimpering in pain. “Drink some water and then we will get started.” Once she had some water, he sighed. “Ok, this will be very painful. Worse than the cruciatus and worse than the spell Dolohov hit you with. Bite down on this.” He handed her a leather strip. He smiled when Harry took her hand. “Here we go.” He began to wave his wand over the cut and ended the curse. However, the damage was done and the bone was showing. He began to knit the wound together layer by layer. The worst was the layer covering the bone. She screamed into the leather and squeezed Harry's hand. Draco came over and took her other hand while Pansy held her other leg down. Tears were streaming down her face. He stopped after 5 minutes. “We will have to do this a few more times today but we will give it time to heal on its own between them.”
Hermione let Harry hold her as she cried. “It's ok 'Mione. We will be right here with you.” He smiled at the man when he held out an object. “He has a book for us to read. Want to try?” When she nodded, he took the book Severus handed him. “Looks familiar.”
Hermione sniffed and smiled weakly. “My book.” They laughed as she leaned back against Harry and let him read to her. She looked up as the others headed off to get checked and get some rest. When she saw Severus watching them, she smiled. When he smiled back at her, she closed her eyes and listened to Harry's voice.
After a while, she heard a rumble. She blushed when she realized it was her stomach. She looked up to see Severus walking in with a tray of food for them. “Lunch time already?” When he nodded, she let Harry help her sit up. “What will happen now sir?”
“Everyone capable to go, will go home.” Severus sighed as he looked around. “Those who wish to be moved to Mungo's, will be moved. Everyone else is staying here until they heal enough to go home.” He held up a hand to stop any comments. “I spoke to your parents and they wish you to remain here until you can be moved. Then you will be moved to where they are.” He smirked at her. “They won't go home until you can move around.”
Harry smiled at her. “They have seen some of the battle from our points of view but they want to see it from yours as well. They know you are hurt but they know you have the best potions master here to help.”
Severus shook his head. “The best in Europe, not the best overall.”
“I beg to differ Severus.” Albus smiled as he walked up to them. “The aurors would like to talk to you about what happened. Minerva is finishing up with them now. After you is Mr. Potter. Unless someone else finishes up before then.” He turned to Hermione. “An auror will be in to speak with you after you are finished with your lunch.”
Hermione nodded. “The sooner the better. I have some more healing to be done and I don't want anyone else to see it.” She dug into her food. “Can I ask what happened to Greyback? I saw him fighting with Lavender and Justin.”
Harry shared a look with them and grinned at her. “Lavender used your Avis birds to temporarily blind him so that she and Justin could take him down. Justin just happened to notice her silver cross pendent. He used that and transfigured it into a small arrowhead before jabbing it in the man's back. Lavender then took off her other necklace and wrapped it around his neck, choking him as the silver dug into him.”
“No way! What happened then?” Hermione took another sip of her tea as she listened to him.
Albus laughed from next to them. “The two of them used a slicing hex to cut his whole body before she pushed her bracelet into one of the deeper cuts. He died in Azkaban and hour ago from silver poisoning.”
Hermione grinned. “Good! That bastard deserved it! Though I would be surprised if she wanted that jewelry back. But they were her favorites.”
Harry grinned. “She did ask for them back. She let Justin keep the transfigured cross and even put it on a chain for him to wear. They cleaned and purified them and are keeping them as a memory of what they went through. Plus, they came out about dating since January.”
Hermione laughed. “I knew it!” she shook her head and went back to eating. Severus was summoned as Minerva entered the room. She smiled at him as he left. “Headmaster, will he be ok?”
“He has a lot to explain but I am sure he will be fine. There may be a trial down the road but we have been covering that since the end of the first war and trials.” Albus sighed as he picked up a box of candy from next to her. “It looks like Mr. Weasley has been by for a visit.”
“Actually, that was me, Harry, and Professor Snape.” Hermione giggled. “I dared him and Harry to eat the worst ones. In return, I would read to myself.” She glanced over to see Harry nod. “Which one of you had the vomit and earwax?”
“I did.” Harry laughed and shook his head. “I don't think I want to know how they found out what that stuff tastes like.”
Minerva sighed as she finally reached them. “Well Mr. Potter, you may have your turn soon. They were bringing in some more aurors to get through everyone quicker. Miss Granger, your parents have allowed me to sit in on your interview. The Headmaster will sit with Harry.” She sat down and looked over the food tray. “You seem to have a healthy appetite despite all those flavored beans you had earlier.”
Hermione nodded. “We did another healing session. It seems to make us hungry.” She sighed as 2 aurors walked in. “It looks like it's our turn Harry.” He nodded and headed towards the door with the Headmaster. She settled in comfortably as the other auror continued on to her bedside. “Let's get this over with.”
A few days later, she was able to be moved. She was currently watching her remaining friends heading to the carriages. Waving as they took off towards Hogsmeade station. She was going to be apperating with Harry and Severus. She sighed and turned to Harry. She then smirked and repeated a phrase she said a few years earlier. “Everything's going to change now isn't it?”
Harry smirked, turned her towards him with his hands on her shoulders, and looked her in the eyes. “Yes, it is.” She smiled and they both cracked up laughing. “Oh, that was rich. I needed that.”
“Do I even want to know?” Severus walked up to them with a frown. “Let's go.” He leaned down and scooped her up.
As they headed to the gates, Hermione explained. “We said the same thing at the end of fourth year.”
“I see.” He let Harry open the gates for them and led him out before letting Harry close them so he could put the wards back up. He then whisked them away to Prince Manor. The Grangers were waiting in the garden with a special wheelchair. Severus settled her into the chair and headed for his rooms to drop off his things. “Harry, take your things up and put them away. Drop hers in her room. I will be in the study if you need me.”
Hermione smiled as her parents walked her around the manor. She told them all about the battle and they watched her pensieve memory of it. “Severus has been working on healing it slowly. I will be wearing shorts for quite a while though because it still hurts quite a bit if anything is over it. It's bad enough with the covering on it.”
“Bill Granger shook his head. “At least you have someone proficient enough to help with it. Is there anything he can't do?”
Hermione laughed. “I am sure there are a few things he can't do, besides give birth.” She smirked at their faces. “In fact, I am pretty sure he can't speak parseltongue.”
“Well, that is true. But he just seems so perfect.” Jean Granger smiled at her. “In fact, he seems to be able to do everything you have always liked.” She winked at her husband. “I'm surprised that he doesn't have a girlfriend yet.”
“Mum! He was a spy! Anyone he got close to would have been in danger.” Hermione blushed at the thought of him with someone. “Although there aren't many women out there that could challenge him intellectually enough to start anything. She would have to be like him. And I have the best grades and test scores since he took his tests.”
Bill Granger smirked at his wife. “So he needs someone like you then?” When his daughter gasped at him, he grinned. “I'm just saying. But, I don't think he planned to survive the war. He can now enjoy a life with someone. He deserves it after all.”
“Yes, he does.” Harry smiled as he joined them. “He isn't interested in anyone that I know of. He has always focused on his potions and spying for Dumbledore. I asked him when I first moved in here if he ever had a girlfriend and he said no. My mum was the closest he ever got and even then he only saw her as a sister. Like you and me. Nobody seemed to fit.” He shrugged. “Maybe someday we will meet someone who fits with him.”
“Maybe.” Hermione sighed as she looked around. “Mum, could we maybe go to the stable? I want to visit the horses.” When her mom nodded, they headed out. When she got to the stable, she smiled. A dark brown nose stuck out from a door, followed by the rest of the head and black mane. “Artemis!” She let her mom push her over to the horse. “Such a beauty. Apollo must be thrilled when he sees you!” She laughed as a neigh from the neighboring stall answered her. “It sure sounds like it.” She let her mum push her so she was between the two doors. Apollo's matching head came out to greet her. “Hey there handsome.” She reached up and scratched them behind their ears. “Sorry we are late. I got injured. We just got home today. I'm sure Severus will be out to visit you soon.”
“Or now.” Severus smirked from behind them. “Cutting into their free time?” He opened the door to let Apollo out and then did the same to Artemis. He then took their leads, clipped them on, and led them out to the pasture. Once in the pasture, he unclipped the leads and let them run. He smiled as they watched the two run about. “They like to play for a bit before just relaxing.”
Hermione sighed as she watched them. “I wish I could run about like that right now. I'm tired of being in a chair already.” She frowned as they all headed back to the house. “What will we be doing this afternoon Severus?”
He smirked down at her. “You will be working in the pool. I want you to move around in there to get your muscles working again. You will be in there every other afternoon.” He smiled at her. “I don't care what you do in there as long as you are moving around and using your legs.”
Harry grinned at her. “I will help. Just let me go change into my suit.” He dashed off as her dad pushed her chair up the steps and towards her room so she could change. Once back downstairs, he turned to Severus. “What do we do about her wound? Will the patch be ok in the water?”
“Harry, it's spelled against the elements.” Hermione laughed as Severus set her down on the side of the pool. “Aren't you going to swim too Severus?”
“No, I don't usually swim.” He moved over to sit in a chair with his book.
Harry jumped in and swam over to help her slide in. He whispered to her so Severus couldn't hear. “He does swim but only when nobody is here. I saw him one time when I peeked in after hearing a splash. I think he's self conscious.”
Hermione nodded and held onto him as she tried to put weight on her leg. “Ow, ok, no weight on it yet.” She laughed at his eye roll. “So, I can dog paddle and slowly kick doing that. I can also swim freestyle. I can do each stroke proficiently but that one would be easier on my leg for now.”
He nodded and moved to swim off a little ways but close enough if she needed him. He smiled when she began to swim. “Geez, maybe swimming will be your therapy 'Mione.”
She laughed as she swam past him. “This feels amazing! I can move my leg without putting weight on it. I love it!”
As the days passed, she found her legs getting stronger. Also, her parents were returning to their home. Severus picked her up and carried her through the floo. Harry and her parents followed. “good grief, what a mess!” She motioned to a nearby chair. “You can set me down there. I can help move stuff around in here while you guys go elsewhere.”
They quickly got the place cleaned up again and got rid of any food that was bad. Harry sighed. “You will have to get groceries but other than that, just some minor stuff.” He turned to see Hermione wince in her chair. “Is your leg getting sore again?”
“Yeah, but I need to get stuff from my room.” She let Severus pick her up and carry her to her room. “Give me 10 minutes.” He nodded and left. Ten minutes later, she was back downstairs and heading back to Prince Manor. Once there, Ava was ready with the leather strap. “Thanks Ava.” She let him put her on the couch. “Is Harry going to start learning these spells tonight?”
“Yes, he is.” Severus turned to Harry. “Now pay close attention. I showed you everything but watch closely.” He began to work on her wound.
Each day they worked on the wound, sometimes Harry would do some. After a week, she was ready for a break. Severus surprised her with a promise to take her flying that evening. They had been working on it during school with a broom Severus lent them. It was for training younger kids who were afraid of falling off. When he pulled out his broom and not hers, she frowned. “What about my broom?”
“You won't be able to fly by yourself with those pains.” He got on his broom and pulled her to sit in front of him. “Just hold on.” He slowly lifted them up and took off over the grounds. The sun was just starting to set.
Hermione smiled and glanced back at him. His face was one of contentment. “Thank you Severus. It's beautiful up here.”
“You are welcome.” He smiled at her. “It's very relaxing out here at this time of day. I often come flying when I need to clear my head. Sometimes it helps when I am stuck on a potion.”
She smiled. “Speaking of potions. I had an idea the other day.” She looked back to see him looking at her. “If modified correctly, would Harry's potion work on werewolves?”
Severus frowned as he landed in the garden. “I don't know.” He picked her up and carried her inside. “It may be possible.”
She smirked at him. “We could always use the ones sentenced to life in Azkaban as test subjects.” She shrugged at his shocked look. “It's not like they have any reason to say no.”
“I can talk to the minister about it.” He set her down in the study and retrieved their notes on the potion. They started going over them. The evening before Harry started his auror training, they were discussing the potion. Severus smirked as Harry yawned. “You better get to bed. You will have a long day tomorrow.”
“Yeah, I'm going to head up now.” He turned to Hermione. “Do you need me to take you up?”
“No thanks Harry, I'm not tired yet.” She smiled and waved him off. “Severus can take me to bed when we are done.” She bent back over her notes as his brow shot up and Severus flushed. She looked up when Harry snorted in amusement. “What?”
Harry smirked at her. “Nothing!” He laughed as he left the room, He saw Hermione shake her head and get back to work. Severus was still flushed. “Interesting.”
As the days passed, Severus and Hermione made a lot of progress on the potion. Her leg was also doing much better. They were currently preparing for their first test. Hermione sighed. “Harry will be there with his trainer in case anything goes wrong. I can't wait to see what happens!”
Severus laughed. “You can wait a little longer. We will be there tomorrow. But now, I have a question for you.” When she turned to look at him, he took a breath. “Do you want to live here while you do your masteries? Usually an apprentice lives with their master but because you are doing 3, I figured this would be better for you. Filius gave you research for the summer and Remus can come here. I discussed it with him and he is agreeable to it if you are. When we return to school, your rooms will be somewhere in between.”
She grinned and gave him a tight hug and kissed his cheek. “I would love that! Thank you!” She smiled as she sat back down. “This is amazing! Wait til I tell mum and dad!” They got back to work. The following day, they arrived at the prison the same time as Harry and his trainer. Once inside, the man who was their test subject nodded to them.
Severus handed the potion to the auror, who in turn made the man drink it. He and Hermione said the spell and stepped back. The man screamed and fell to his knees. A dark mist drifted out of him and he fell silent. The mist disappeared and Severus stepped forward to take a blood sample. When the man opened his eyes, he smiled. “How do you feel?”
The man smiled at the group as Hermione poised to write his response. “I don't know what just happened, but I don't feel any of the usual pains or longings I usually get going into the full moon. I feel better than I have in years!” He smiled as a guard helped him up and out. “Thank you!”
The auror nodded to Severus and Hermione as she finished her notes and packed up. “We will get a notice about what happens for the full moon. I will then let you know.” He motioned Harry to the door. “Let's hope it works.” The group quickly left. Hermione smiling as Severus carried her back to the Apparition point and back home. She was asleep by the time they made it to her bedroom.
Severus quietly laid her on the bed. “Ava, let me know when she wakes up.” The elf nodded and he quietly left. He smiled as he headed for his office. He had a good feeling about the potion. He sat down and wrote down his notes in his potions journal.
A few days later, they finally heard about their test subject. Severus smirked and handed the letter to Hermione. “Congratulations. It was a success.” He summoned the papers they would need. “We can get started on the patent paperwork now. St. Mungo's should be responding sometime soon as well about the other potion.” He grinned at her. “Hermione, if both of them get patented, you will never have to work a regular job. You will also be very close to earning a mastery or two.”
“I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have to work every day.” She laughed as she thought about it. “I'd probably go stir crazy.” She checked the time. “Oh! My parents should be arriving any moment!” She let him help her up and to the sitting room. She surprised them by walking up to them when they arrived.
When they headed back to school, she found her rooms were on the second floor and she could floo straight into the offices of her three masters. When Severus arrived to walk her to the Great Hall, she smiled. “I want to try walking the whole way.” He nodded and let her walk out the door. He slid a hand across her lower back for support. “thanks.”
They made it to the staff entrance before her leg gave out. He scooped her up and carried her to her seat between him and Remus. “Well, she managed to walk all the way to the door here. That's the farthest so far.”
The staff congratulated her on her effort. She smiled at them. “Also, we have some good news. Especially for Remus.” She turned to the man and grinned. “We were successful in removing the werewolf from both a man and a woman. We have it ready if you want to take it next week. The night before the full moon.”
Remus sputtered in shock. “If I want to? Yes!” He grinned at them. “This is amazing! I cannot wait!”
After dinner, Hermione remained with her three masters as they worked out a schedule for her. Afterwards, Severus carried her back to her rooms and gave her the healing potions she had been taking. After that, they quickly fell into a routine. She began helping out the first year Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff charms class and the third year DADA class of the same houses. So far, she hadn't helped with the potions classes because of her leg.
In early October, Severus received a letter from St. Mungo's He opened it and read it before staring in shock. “Amazing.” He handed it to Hermione and watched for her reaction.
“Oh my god!” She clapped a hand over her mouth and looked at him. “I need to talk to Neville!” She pushed back her plate and rushed out of the Great Hall. The other professors looked over at her abrupt departure. Severus just smirked and returned to his breakfast.
