Hermione blinked tiredly at the bright light in front of her eyes. She swatted a bit with her hand, but the light wouldn’t go away. Why couldn’t she just get some sleep? She was so tired. She had the most wonderful dream. She was at the beach hotel in Australia and the whole place was empty for some reason, which meant that she could pick the best spot just by the water. She couldn’t wait to dive into those waves. They were calling out to her.
“Hermione?”
“I think she’s waking up.”
“Of course she’s waking up. That’s the definition of a Wake-Up Potion, Potter.”
“Well, maybe you brewed it incorrectly, because her eyes are still closed.”
“I’m still your professor, Potter, show some respect. And no, I did not brew it incorrectly.”
“Oh, shut up!”
Hermione sat up, looking around at them all with fiery eyes.
“I had the first good dream in four years and you all just ruined it. I was gonna swim and …”
“Miss Granger, please refrain from babbling.”
She looked up in surprise to find professor Snape look down on her with dark eyes. She felt her heartbeat speed up again, and forced herself to breathe deeply. He was furious.
“I believe you were telling us something about your age? And breaking rules?” professor Mcgonagall stated with her usual firm voice, all cheerfulness from previously gone. “Really, what is it with you two? You haven’t been back for three hours yet and you have already broken rules?”
“Actually, professor”, Harry piped up from Hermione's side. “I have nothing to do with this. I’m not trying to throw Hermione under the bus here, but this is all her.”
“Really? I find that hard to believe.” Snape drawled, and Harry threw him a dirty look.
“Fine, then for Merlin’s sake tell us what is going on here”, McGonagall exclaimed.
Harry helped Hermione up and sat her down in a chair. She found it a bit intimidating that everyone else remained standing, but she really had herself to blame. She just had to push through the anxiety that were coursing through her body.
“I just found out about the marriage law today, professor McGonagall”, she started. “I haven’t read a newspaper since I left for Australia over two months ago. And I just came back yesterday, which might be the reason why I fainted, because I’m so jetlagged I can barely keep my eyes opened. Actually when I went there I basically slept for an entire week …”
“‘Mione”, Harry interrupted.
“Right. Sorry. I babble when I’m nervous.” She cleared her throat, taking a deep breath. “When I had the time turner in third year I found a way to turn back the time longer than just a few hours. So I did. Alot. Long story short, I turned back time so much that I’m now twenty instead of just about to turn nineteen.”
Hermione cringed from the silence and buried her face in her hands. Silently tears started to fall without her being able to control it. Merlin, she was so tired.
Breaking the silence was professor Lupin storming in, holding a large chunk of chocolate in his hands.
“Found it. Merlin, I’m so stupid, I always carry some on me, I don’t know why I didn’t … Hey, what’s wrong?”
No one answered. Hermione felt Harry’s supportive hand rest on her back, rubbing gentle circles, which made her feel a little better, but not a lot.
“Miss Granger, how could you? I trusted you”, came McGonagall's stern voice, and Hermione felt worse again. Letting her mentor down was almost the worst thing about this whole ordeal. And also the fact that she most probably would get married to an unknown wizard pretty soon.
“Hey, lay off her, okay” came Harry’s voice, and he grabbed Hermione’s shoulder reassuringly. “Do you realize how much pressure she was under that year? That is partly your fault professor, because you gave her the stupid time turner in the first place. I remember how she looked. Sometimes she could barely walk she was so tired. She had to see a chiropractor that summer because she got back problems from all the books she was carrying around. She got hours in detention for falling asleep in the library all the time. She used the turner to go back in time, so she could get some well deserved rest. Besides, it doesn’t really matter, because it was like five years ago. And this is now, and we need to figure out how we’re going to help her. Are you going to help us or not?”
Hermione looked up and smiled at Harry. He didn’t smile back, he was too busy looking down all the teachers in the room. He really had grown, Hermione realized, and her chest filled with pride. When did he stop being the small, insecure boy he was when she met him?
“Of course we’ll help, Potter” McGonagall sighed, a bit more gentle than a few minutes earlier. “We’re not going to do anything tonight though. The five of us will have a meeting in my office after dinner tomorrow night, and we’ll discuss it then. Miss Granger obviously needs to rest, so please follow Remus to your new rooms. That was the surprise we wanted to talk to you about. Because of your service during the war, we have provided you with private rooms and a common room shared only between the two of you. I’ll see you both tomorrow. Good night.”
With that the headmistress stalked off, followed by Snape, and Hermione burst into tears again, hulking into her hands. She felt to strong hands resting on her knees and looked up, seeing Remus standing on his knees looking up at her.
“You know Hermione, there’s no point in trying to solve anything right now. You need to get some rest, and I think we all need some time to process this. Have some chocolate, and then I’ll take you to your rooms okay?”
She nodded slowly and took the chocolate he handed her. She even managed to give him a small smile.
“Thank you, Remus.”
Hermione looked up as Harry entered the door of their small common room. He had used the cloak to sneak up to Gryffindor tower and tell Ginny about the new living situation. Hermione meanwhile had been sitting in the sofa, waiting for him. She really needed to sleep, but she also needed to speak to Harry. She needed to vent a little or she would never be able to sleep anyway.
“Sat up waiting for us, as we expected. She told me to say that she’s thinking about you.”
Harry flopped down on the sofa, loosening up his tie and buttoning up his shirt a bit as he went. They still wore the Gryffindor colours, and as Remus had explained to them on the way to their rooms, they were still Gryffindors, which felt good. The common room displayed that as well, being decorated in red and gold.
“Thank you for being there for me today, Harry” Hermione whispered, and took a hold of his hand. “I don’t know why I freaked like that, fainting and crying and stuff. I guess I just got a bit overwhelmed.”
“Hermione, you’ve been through a lot. Of course you’re overwhelmed. I know I am, and it’s not even me being directly inflicted. It’s okay to not always have it all together, you know. You’ll see, we’ll sit down tomorrow and figure this out.”
“Thank you, Harry. I’ve missed you, so much.”
“I’ve missed you too, Hermione.”
“Severus, I hope you realize what a disaster this is”, Minerva McGonagall said, pacing back and forth in her office. Snape however was standing like a statue before her desk.
“Of course I do”, he simply stated. Inside though he was mentally screaming at miss Granger for being so careless. What was she thinking. Even five years ago he would have thought she was mature enough, but apparently not.
“With so many Death Eaters still out there roaming free, and her being a third of the Golden Trio … they’re going to do everything in their power to get to her. Honestly, with all the bad decisions the ministry have been doing lately, I think that Hermione being killed or kidnapped might be the final straw that begins the revolution. Or another war.”
Snape hadn’t thought about that at all, which made him uneasy. He could usually detect all possible outcome of a situation. Did this mean that he was losing his edge? Had he started to relax to much since the war ended?
“What do you think Severus? I’m sorry if you wanted an early night, but I really think we should come up with options for Hermione until tomorrow. I may be disappointed in her, but I do not envy the situation she has found herself in. Poor girl.”
“I think the safest option would be to have someone from the Order volunteer to marry her”, Snape answered McGonagall after some consideration. “We can’t allow someone the opportunity to ‘claim her’, as it were.”
“That’s true. We already know that we are nowhere near finding a solution until wednesday next week. The sad truth is that she will have to marry until we have a better solution.”
“Agreed”, Snape drawled.
“And I’m sorry Severus, but I think you should be the one marrying her.”
Snape said nothing. He just stared at McGonagall who kept nervously pacing the office.
“The only two male, half or pureblood wizards in the Order who also works at Hogwarts are yourself and Remus. By marrying one of you, Hermione could still continue her education, which I know is important to her. However, Remus just lost Tonks and is still adjusting to being a father, not to mention a single father. We couldn’t possibly ask him to take on this responsibility as well.”
“But you’re perfectly comfortable with asking me to marry and having sex with a student?”
“Severus, I understand what I’m asking you to do, but I really don’t think we have another choice. This is potentially bigger than just Hermione getting hurt.”
“I know I don’t have a choice”, Snape snarled. “The war may be over, and my time as a double agent too, but I’m still just the Order’s little pet slave. Nothing has really changed, except you are the one ordering me around instead of Dumbledore. I’ll see you in the morning, Minerva.”
With that he stormed out of the office. Minerva sat down heavily on her office chair, putting her face in her hands.
“It is the right decision though, right Albus?”
The portrait of Albus Dumbledore looked down at Minerva with sad eyes.
“It is. And Severus realizes that as well, he’s just frustrated.”
“Why does this have to be so difficult? Why can’t there be a solution that leaves everyone happily ever after?”
“Now you know what it was like to be me, Minerva.”
“I hate being you, Albus.”
