The next morning came all too early for Draco as he had gotten maybe 4 hours of sleep after his caffeine crazed fiasco, and his head pounded with the withdrawal. Why did he ever let Hermione trick him into drinking such a bizarre drink. He rubbed his temples with his thumbs, how did Muggles drink this stuff.
When he finally rolled out of the comfort of his bed, he was met with a note on his nightstand, he rubbed his eyes then began to read
Draco,
I am sure you are experiencing some of what we Muggles call Caffeine Highs
I know it feels good now, but don't wear yourself out too much...
Because in a few hours you will no doubt experience a Caffeine low.
Try to take a cold shower, and drink lots of water. When you come in today I will make you
what is called a De-Caf. Basically you get the great taste of coffee, with less head pain.
Sorry for not warning you earlier. Hope to see you tonight,
-Hermione
Draco cursed under his breath. How long had this note been here. It had to have come pretty early during the night for the Caffeine High part to still be relevant when he read it. This brought about another question. What in Merlin's name did he do last when he was completly hopped up.
He then felt a sharp pain in his gut and he knew exactly what he had done the night before. There were wrappers upon wrappers of eaten candy on his bed. Apparently he had gone through his entire stash of "Emergency Treats To Help With Bad Days" in the span of a couple hours. Bile built up in the back of his throat and he ran to the bathroom.
When Draco emerged from his purge he made a mental note to take some free time and head over to HoneyDukes to replace most of his stash, and to never let Hermione make him anything ever again. He did want to see her though. He could feel it in his body like a kind of caffeine that didn't ever go away, he pictured the lows of their new friendship as eventually Hermione would lose interest in him since everyone did. But Merlin it felt good to be around her. Caffeine drop off or not last night was one of the best nights he'd had in a long time.
Thank Gods, Draco only had one class today and it were pretty relaxed, so he would have if nothing else a non-stressful day. He ate breakfast alone and watched in disgust as girls flocked around Professor Weasley, but his mind kept floating back to Hermione. He imagined her sitting next to him and sharing whispers about how vile the whole scene was. This was a calming thought, and he imagined her smile. He wondered what it would be like if she didn't look so exhausted all the time.
After breakfast Draco walked to class pondering about the witch he had spent the past two days with. Had she really forgotten how to use her magic? Even being a little rusty, it was Hermione and she should have bounced back to being able to use magic whenever she wanted. He decided to talk with her about it when he would show up.
******
Hermione woke up hungover. This was typical of her to spend time drinking when she didn't have work in the morning. Her head spun as she played the events of the last night in her head. She thought of Draco's eyes, his crazy actions. She wondered if he would even come and visit her again. She figured he would have come to the conclusion that she had clearly poisoned him.
The painting of the Royal family was chattering away amongst themselves and that's how Hermione knew it was time to get out of bed and rejoin the living world. She didn't have a window or an alarm clock, but at 9:00 AM every morning the Royals in the painting would talk about the drop in economics whatever that meant and the mother would wave her miniature umbrella. It made a strange sound, as an umbrella would make only masked by paper. It was a pleasant sound though and with that Hermione rolled out of bed.
Hermione, still in her night clothes walked to the front of the store, and sat in a wooden chair matching a small wooden coffee shop table and looked outside at the clouds. To her they were so fluffy and mysterious. She longed to touch them and feel their comfort. She thought of how it would feel to go outside again, the warmth in the air, the buzzing of the different insects. It tempted her. She rarely went outside anymore since all her supplies were delivered to her and she found comfort in the unchanging atmosphere of the coffee shop.
It wasn't anything she had to plan for. Customers came out, customers left with coffee. Simple as that.
Then the thought that Draco would be showing up at around 3 rung through her mind and her heart started beating. It was a strange feeling, and one she hadn't felt since 4th year when she had her crush on Viktor Krum. Her palms felt sweaty and she almost forgot about her hangover. "Oh no" she thought to herself "I am starting to have a crush on Draco Malfoy". Her stomach churned with the words running through her mind and she ran to the bathroom upchucking booze and half digested coffee shop pretzels.
When Hermione returned to her room, the mother in the painting spoke up. "Oh Hermione dear. You look dreadful!". Hermione shot a glare at her "Well I am not feeling so great". "Yes that is apparent, you are sweaty, flushed, and hmm you have practised magic for the first time in almost a year! Are you okay? Does it have anything to do with the blonde man who keeps visiting us?"
The son in the portrait spoke up "Oh yes, I thought I'd never see a man in this room!"
"Pascal!" The mother swatted him then turned to Hermione "Hmm. I think you have feelings for the blonde man... Oh what was his name again. Oh never the mind. Is he coming tonight?"
"Maybe" Hermione said. The mother clapped her hands together with glee "Oh then dear! By yourself an outfit, you only wear like two things".
Hermione looked at her. Maybe that wasn't such a bad idea. She had been wanting to go outside afterall. And she could go to Diagon Alley, get some spell books, ingredients for potions. She smiled a little at the painting "You know, it is my day off. That is a wonderful idea!"
******
Hermione threw on some clothes and headed out, for the first time in so long she felt the sun on her head and hair, shining light on her almost translucent skin. She stood in front of the shop until Muggles started to give her strange looks then she made her way down to Diagon Alley. She actually hid behind a tree and apparated there. She was surprised she even still knew how to do that.
The sun was warm and the owners of all the shops she went in to smiled at her with a similar greeting "Hermione! Where have you been?". But they were so friendly, and Hermione couldn't believe she had stayed by herself smelling like coffee grinds for almost a year.
After she'd grabbed some necessities to begin practising magic again she decided to swing by Hogsmeade village, especially since she could apparate again. But when she got there shops were hanging up their closing signs and she was faced with a decision. HoneyDukes was right in front of her, a wonderfully cheerful place, and a witch's clothing shop was to her left, which is what she originally came out for. She stroked her chin thoughtfully then shrugged. Might as well buy some candy of her day off.
The first thing that hit Hermione was the smell, chocolate and rasberries and so many different things. It was wonderful, a great change from the coffee she all too often smelled. She browsed down a particularly good looking aisle when she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was Draco.
Her heart skipped a beat, but Draco smiled at her. "What are you doing here?" She said
"Well after my, what was it you called it... Caffeine High? Well I ate my entire stash of candy and decided to stock up. I should be asking you what you're doing here... I thought you were tired of the wizarding world?"
"I am reintegrating"
"Ah big words, still the brightest witch of her age I suppose"
Hermione rolled her eyes, and Draco smirked then continued "So if you'd like I can start your lesson now"
"Now?"
"Yes come outside with me, there's a field a few yards away from the Shreiking shack where I am sure no one will interrupt us"
"Well, Alright"
******
Hermione and Draco walked in silence to the field. But it wasn't an uncomfortable silence, but a peaceful one, like a long hug after you haven't seen someone in a while and you have no words, just feelings in their embrace.
When they arrived Draco was the first to speak "Now before I teach you there is a price"
"Come on Draco, you know I don't have any extra money"
"That's not what I mean. My Price is that you come eat breakfast with me tomorrow at Hogwarts."
Hermione blinked at him and opened her mouth to speak but was cut off "It starts at 7:00, but i usually go at 8:00. You'll be back before your coffee shop even opens"
She nodded, almost enthusiastically. "Alright then let's begin, we will first start off by you telling me why you stopped doing magic, and why the brightest witch of her age can barely do simple spells, like cleaning spells anymore.
Hermione's head dropped, and she fell to her knees. Draco was not expecting this reaction and out of instinct he took her in his arms pulling her into the soft grass of the feild beside him. Hermione sniffled.
"Muggle booze affects magic"
"You drink?" Draco was astounded
"Every chance I get" The distraught witch confessed
"Why?"
"Because every time I close my eyes, I see Bellatrix Lestrange.. H-hovering over me.. biting me, carving me..." She burst into tears and Draco pulled her even closer
"It's okay she can't hurt you now. shhh".
Hermione looked up at him. This was the most vulnerable he had ever seen her.
"I am going to get you back to the strong, confident witch you are. I know it's cold comfort from someone like me, but I care about you Hermione"
"Why?" Hermione asked, her lip trembling
"I-I don't know. There's something about you. Something in the way you talk. The way you smile"
Hermione nuzzled her head into Draco's chest "You're like a new man, Draco"
"Lonliness will do that to a person"
"You're not alone anymore" Hermione and Draco made eye contact. He ran his fingers through her hair.
"You'll leave" His voice coming out harsher than intended "Everyone always does"
"I won't. I promise"
Draco looked down at her "Are you sure you want to be making someone like me a promise like that?"
"Cross my heart". Hermione took out her wand and crossed her heart with it. Pink embers emitting from it's aura.
Draco rested his head on Hermione's. They were met with silence again. But again, it was nice. Beautiful even. And as the sun began to set behind the shreiking shack, they felt the warm hug they had both experienced earlier only this time... In real life.
****
Hermione walked with Draco back to Hogwarts. She grimaced as she let go of his arm.
"Everything alright?"
"I don't wanna go back to the coffee shop" she confessed "After a day like today, I don't want to be alone in that crappy one room containment cell."
Draco looked at her "That's understandable" He then gulped "Want to stay with me?"
Hermione's eyes lit up
Draco cleared his throat "It's no mansion, but it is very spacious and I have a spare bed. Much bigger than your twin sized disaster"
Hermione giggled at him "That actually sounds perfect".
For the first time in ages, they both had completely full hearts, giddy with the prospect of something new.
