Harry walked in to the four bedroom house he'd been forced to live in while he was growing up. He looked around and called out for his aunt who Dudley had told him had been living by herself since Vernon left her for a younger trophy wife. Harry had to admit that he had no clue why any woman would be attracted to the fat, abusive walrus-like man was beyond him. Then again there was always some money-hungry little twenty-year old that doesn't care as long as he buys whatever she wants and that's what he found after getting a promotion at work that put him in a whole new financial bracket. Harry walked in to the living room and found the tall, thin frame of his aunt sitting in a large overly stuffed chair and she was just staring at the photo's on the mantel.
“Aunt Petunia?” Harry said again as he walked towards her and sat on the couch near her “Are you okay?”
“I had Dudley lie to you, Harry” She said by way of greeting “I apologize”
“You're not sick?” Harry asked.
“I am” Petunia said with a small sigh “I am quite sick...dying actually”
“But...” He started.
“Harry, I have chosen to not do the chemotherapy” She explained “I've decided that I want the last weeks of my life to be comfortable and not filled with sickness and false hope”
“But there is hope” Harry told her, while Petunia wasn't his favorite person she was his last link to his mother and the thought of losing her hurt his heart “They are curing cancer all the time”
“I know” Petunia smiled sadly at him “But I didn't catch it in time. I'd been sick for a while but Vernon kept telling me that it was nothing and getting upset when I'd talk about going to the doctors...you know how he felt about doctors”
“You should have gone!” Harry snapped at her “How could you be so stupid?”
“My mother raised me to believe that my husband knew best for me” Petunia said with a shrug “Last year when Vernon left me for that social climbing slut I went to the doctors and found out that I had stage four breast cancer. They told me I could do the chemotherapy and probably live for two years before I would inevitably succumb to the sickness” She leaned her head back and brought the glass of wine he just noticed that she was holding to her lips and took a sip “I did research and saw what would be awaiting me if I did the treatments and I didn't like what I saw so I decided not to do it, I was told that at best I would have a year”
“So you're giving up?” Harry asked almost meanly and she gave a dry laugh.
“I died years ago Harry” She informed “I just forgot to stop breathing”
Harry watched her as she took a few more sips of her wine and then stood up and made her way to the kitchen. As expected, when he followed her in there he saw that she'd made food and for once it was him that she'd cooked for. In the years before Hogwarts Harry remembered watching her (from a safe distance, of course) cook the most elaborate meals that would be eaten, no by him, but by the clients that Vernon would bring home to be wooed by his family. Now, the room seemed small and overly bright almost like it was trying to hard to make someone feel comfortable and happy and the food waiting to be consumed seemed too fancy just to be eaten by someone who up until six year ago had been simply called 'the boy' and unloved by the only family he had. A small part of Harry wanted to be happy that karma was catching up with his aunt for the years of neglect and abuse he suffered but the rest of him wanted her to be okay because even though his life had been shitty with her he did remember the times that she showed him kindness.
“I made a meat loaf” She pointed out “Vegetables, if you're hungry”
“I am” Harry said cautiously “Thank you, I'm just going to run my stuff to my old room”
“Take Dudley's if you'd rather” Petunia said as she poured herself another glass of wine and then started to spoon out food on to two plates “It's cleaned out, none of his stuff remains, I donated it all”
Harry thanked her again and walked out of the kitchen in to the hallway and was walking back towards the stairs. He trailed his fingertips over the wall until he was touching the door that led to what had been his bedroom for most of his child life. He lowered his hand to the cool door handle and twisted it was locked, it had never been locked before and it confused him as to why it was now. Pulling his hand away from the door Harry turned and made his way to the stairs, taking them two at a time and then made his way to what had been Dudley's bedroom when they were growing up. Upon opening the door Harry found just a light blue bedroom with a double bed, dresser and a mirror with the closet door left opened wide but nothing else. The bedroom that had always seemed so small while trying to contain all of his spoiled cousins toys, bikes, televisions (he had two at all times) computers, game sets and the armchairs he insisted on having through all they did was collect clothes and dust now seemed huge. Harry dropped his bags on the bed and looked around one more time before leaving the room again and headed for the stairs. He stopped and looked at the closed door that held his old bedroom, one he was sure was just as bare if not more bare than Dudley's as he highly doubted Petunia or Vernon would want any reminders of him. He clasped the doorknob and gave it a shake but it was locked. With a shake of his head Harry walked back downstairs to join his aunt for lunch.

Dear Hermione,
I know that you are probably too busy training my TEMPORARY replacement but I needed to talk to you. I feel like I'm living in some alternate universe here where I'm actually wanted. I'll admit that I just got here, I spent almost two weeks at the Burrow with Molly and Arthur even though I was just going to stop in and say hello. Ginny lives with some friends, Ron is living with Lavender and the others are all living somewhere else so trying to get away from Molly was harder than I thought it would be and she says she wants you to come home soon to see her. I saw Luna and she is doing well, her and Neville broke up about four months ago and she's been busy with her fathers paper.
Hermione, I think I need your help. I wish you were here with me. Everything is so screwed up. Apparently my aunt is dying and instead of spending time with Dudley she asked for me, the house is the same and yet...not. The closet under the stairs that I lived in before Hogwarts is all locked up when it never used to be and my old bedroom's locked up too, what the hell is happening? I'm confused she and Vernon spent most of my life making sure that I knew that I was unwanted and unloved and all of a sudden I was expected to come back here and be forgiving? I thought I could be but Hermione, I'm not sure I'm strong enough to be so forgiving.
With love,
Harry.
Hermione reread the letter and then put it down on the table near where she was sitting. She was confused too. His aunt and uncle were disgusting people that should have never been allowed to procreate and how Dudley, whom she'd met a few times, had come out as decent as he was was beyond her. But being in the face of death did funny things to a persons outlook on life in general not to mention their own past so maybe Petunia's new need to be close to Harry wasn't so strange after all. She wished that she had the answers that Harry so desperately needed but there was nothing that Hermione could come up with because she had never really been in this situation.
“A letter from Potter?” Malfoy asked as activated the charm they'd put on the seeds a few days before “Anything good?”
“Read it” Hermione handed him the letter since there wasn't anything too personal in there “Maybe you'll have some eyeopening advice to give because I don't” Draco looked at the letter and read it a few times before sitting down and looking like he was actually thinking really hard about it, his seriousness in the situation had Hermione watching him closely actually interested in what he'd have to say.
“Guilt” He finally said and Hermione furrowed her brows “She feels guilty about what she did to him when he was a kid. Locking the doors is like she's trying to reassure him that he won't have to even see those terrible places again however it's also keeping her safe from the memories of what she'd done” He shrugged a little “She probably feels like she would never be able to forgive someone for doing something so horrible so how could he?”
“Wow” Hermione looked at him in wonder “That's amazing”
“My fathers going through it” He shrugged “A bit odd really” He made a face that made Hermione smirk a little “He feels guilty for his part in the war, which he should. He's guilty that he did so many horrible things in the war and Potter still testified to get my mother free of her prison sentence and then spoke on my side to keep me from prison and spoke again on my fathers behalf to get his life sentence reduced to a mere two years” He looked confused “I never understood why they made such a change when they never had before”
“I shouldn't tell you” Hermione bit her lip, it had been such a long time she'd had a conversation with someone she hadn't spent the last five years with constantly and she liked learning new stuff about someone “Harry should really be the one to,..or your father”
“What is it?” Draco asked “You can't start like that and not finish...it's like almost getting to an orgasm only to have to stop suddenly!”
“Well it happened in the final battle” Hermione said “We were running back to the school when a death eater spotted us. He aimed his wand and shot a killing curse, now that we know how the game was being played on Voldemort's side I know that man would have been killed but the thing is that Harry didn't see it and it would have killed him”
“How do you know it happened?” Draco asked and it earned him a glare.
“I saw the curse” Hermione said, she looked at her hands “I happened like in a muggle movie it was too slow and yet too fast. I couldn't do anything to save him and I watched the acid green curse shoot towards him but then he was pulled out of the way and the curse hit another death eater” She looked at Draco “You father pulled Harry out of the way, saved him and later at the court date, Harry returned the favor”
“My father did something heroic?” Draco whispered more to himself than to Hermione.
“And at great personal risk” Hermione told him “If Voldemort had won you know that he would have figured out what he'd done...and then....”
“Killed him” Draco whispered “We were all lucky then, that Voldemort died”
“Did you ever doubt Harry's ability t kill him?” Hermione asked with a snort.
“Yes” Draco answered honestly “Many, many, many times” Hermione yawned and looked at the front of the tent.
“I'm going to bed” She told him “With luck the seeds will have moved and we'll be closer to collecting them”
“I hope so” Draco said “You never did tell me what you were scared of”
“Oh, yeah” Hermione nodded “Because of the war I'm now really afraid of Love”
“Love?” Draco repeated “Why love?”
“It was love that saved Harry” She informed “But it was also loved that produced Voldemort, caused him to go after Lily and James and in the war...it was love that set Xeno Lovegood to betray us...so yeah...I'm afraid of love”
“But don't you want to be in love?” He asked and she snorted.
“No” Was the answered “Never”
