Narcissa's fifteenth birthday came and went without much fanfare. Lord Voldemort had her father out on yet another agressive recruiting drive. In fact, most of the men were out recruiting or were on missions to intimidate muggles. Druella hosted yet another ladies luncheon at the Black manor two weeks after Narcissa's birthday.
"Well, we've yet to hear the news, who is Narcissa pledged to marry?" one of the women called out to Druella across the large round table. The room hushed in anticipation. At least one person whispered, "Avery," and several women nodded. It was expected that Narcissa would take her sister's place as Avery's bride. Rumor was that he donated a large sum prior to Andromeda's birthday and was angry that he hadn't gotten what he'd essentially paid for.
Other names were whispered, Nott, Dolohov, one of her Rosier cousins, they were all awful. Narcissa held her head high. She trusted in the Dark Lord. She repeated it over and over again in her head. She hadn't heard the news either. She assumed it was bad and that's why her mother hadn't said anything.
"Oh, that," Druella said flippantly trying to look like she didn't care. "The Dark Lord has much more important things to worry about than Cissy," she said shaking her head. Everyone looked at Narcissa.
"So he hasn't decided?" Narcissa asked incredulously. She did trust in the Dark Lord!
"No, but he will, and then we will plan for a Christmas wedding," Druella singsonged. All the women began chatting about the prospects of a Christmas wedding in a couple of years. Narcissa was born on the twenty-fourth of December. It sounded like her mother wanted her to marry on Christmas instead of her birthday. That was nice. At least her birthday would still be her own.
As the women weighed the pros and cons of having a traditional pagan ceremony as opposed to the more modern version, Narcissa daydreamed out the window. She saw a group of men entering the chapel's exterior door. She saw one that she recognized from one of the get together's that Bellatrix and her husband Rodolphus hosted. She couldn't remember his name, but she admired the long, lustrous blonde hair, almost white in color, his Patrician features prominently featured as he glared at the other men who dawdled outside. She sighed. He was so handsome. So strong. He used a cane but she couldn't tell if it was for effect or if he needed it. No matter, she thought. It looked regal on him.
"Will you look at that," a woman stood over Narcissa's shoulder to see what she was looking at out the window. "Lucius Malfoy is using a cane now," she said shaking her head. Narcissa smiled, now knowing his name, her new crush.
"I've heard it's nerve damage from taking the Dark Mark," Narcissa's Aunt Roberta said loudly. Women began whispering scandalously back and forth.
"Bellatrix has tremors," Druella said, shaking everyone out of their side chatter. Several women gasped.
"No, it's not like that," Narcissa protested the looks of horror. "Bellatrix told me. She said that it has to do with the intensity of belief. Because Bellatrix believes so strongly in Lord Voldemort, she gets tremors, an outward sign of her belief," she explained. Several women made faces of disbelief and some shook their heads.
"Regardless, can you imagine my outrage when I received the news that Andromeda is pregnant," Druella said drawing everyone's attention back to herself. Narcissa sighed. She believed Bellatrix. And if Lucius Malfoy had to use a cane because of his Dark Mark, then he must believe very strongly.
Months went by and soon it was summer break from Hogwarts. Narcissa was summoned to the chapel soon after arriving home from school. She could hardly breathe. She knew that Lord Voldemort must have chosen who she would marry. She gave the appearance of gliding down the center aisle of the chapel to the large table everyone sat around. Her white robes flowed around her gracefully and the golden tones of her hair reflected the light of the candles beautifully. Narcissa enjoyed creating charms that gave off an aura of beauty, as well as inspire fear.
She sat at the chair indicated for her as the future Death Eater bride. It was forest green with silver thread. The Dark Lord favored the Slytherin house colors from his days at Hogwarts. Narcissa chose emerald jewelry to adorn her white robes, knowing her Lord would approve. She had all of her emeralds set in platinum instead of gold. Appearances were important and she wanted to give off the proper appearance in front of her Lord. She repeated her mantra over and over in her mind, "I trust in the Dark Lord."
Lord Voldemort appeared and everyone cheered. The atmosphere of meetings was different now. The group was much larger now, they had dragged the pews closer to the big table and folding chairs were squeezed in everywhere. People stood at the back of the room. There were men and women now, many bearing the Dark Mark. What had started as a small, devoted group of followers had grown to a huge, fanatic group of worshipers. People stood outside and the Dark Lord used amplifying spells to spread his voice for all around to hear.
As the cheering finally quieted down, Lord Voldemort engaged the crowd. He brought them in with humor, usually a joke about the stupidity of muggles. He preached as if this were a revival meeting and he were spreading the word of Jesus. He used magic to emphasize his points and the people ooohhed and ahhhed. His charisma and his decication to creating a master race of wizards brought in hoards of followers and kept them coming back. Money poured in, more people were sent on missions to advance the cause. And now, in the midst of this uproar, Lord Voldemort was about to introduce Narcissa to the man she would marry. She held her breath.
"And now, let's turn our attention to the beautiful young woman seated before you," Lord Voldemort gestured to Narcissa. Everyone cheered. Narcissa exhaled and smiled. This felt good. No wonder Lord Voldemort liked it so much. She waved a little and everyone cheered even louder. Lord Voldemort quieted everyone with a wave of his wand.
"After careful consideration, I have chosen a man who has given his life for the cause, brought his father in, his entire family line is now intertwined in the pureblood cause. He is my most loyal servant, second only to my beloved Bellatrix," the Dark Lord stopped and looked to Bellatrix, who sat in a chair next to the Dark Lord's throne. She looked sullen and angry. The Dark Lord turned away and indicated that a man in the shadows step forward. Lucius Malfoy stepped into the light.
"My humble servant, Lucius Malfoy, please come greet your bride," Lord Voldemort announced. Half the crowd cheered loudly and half had gone silent. It seemed that certain prospective husbands had fan groups that had expected to profit from the union with the youngest Black daughter. Narcissa stood, her heart pumping in her ears. She couldn't have heard right, but there was Lucius Malfoy holding his hand out to her, bowing on one knee, much as she had at Lord Voldemort's side years ago. She smiled and took his hand. She was going to marry Lucius Malfoy. She didn't know how or why. But she knew that she trusted in the Dark Lord and she always would.
