Memory:
Ron was pacing the healers office with his arms crossed over his chest. Hermione sat in the chair before the desk and was nervously watching the healers empty chair, Healer Brett had just been about to tell them what was wrong with Hermione’s womb when she was called out of the office. Now they wait. If she was being honest with herself, which she wasn’t, at this point in their marriage a baby would solve nothing but she wanted so much to have the life she’d planned out after the war that she was desperate to do anything. Healer Brett walked back in to the office with deep apologies and sat back down and looked at the file before her.
“Well, Mr. and Mrs. Weasley” The healer said.
“Can you just tell us what’s wrong with her?” Ron snapped as he sat down. Hermione lowered her eyes to her hands in embarrassment at the way he was talking to her, Ron had changed over the years in a way that had nothing to do with what they faced during the war.
“There is nothing wrong with her, Mr. Weasley” Healer Brett answered him crisply, her light green eyes narrowing at him in a way that would have made Professor McGonagall proud “Her womb is fine, blood work is fine, her body is in perfect shape and while her age is a bit young for magical reproduction there is nothing wrong with it”
“Could she possibly be taking a potion to keep herself from getting pregnant?” Ron asked meanly.
“WHAT?!” Hermione jumped to her feet angrily “You son of a bitch, why would you ever assume that?!”
“Wouldn’t be the first time you’ve lied about stuff” He snarled, turning on her and apparently forgetting that the healer was in the room.
“Do you think I would lie about something like not being able to get pregnant?” Hermione asked, tears filling her eyes “What is wrong with you?”
“Obviously there’s nothing wrong with me” Ron hissed meanly “I’m a fucking Weasley and my family is famous for producing loads of children so obviously there’s something wrong with you”
“Ronald…” Hermione sobbed.
“Don’t” He glared at her “I can’t believe I married a dud” He let out an angry sigh “Well, we can likely have this “marriage” taken care of so that I can find someone who isn’t…screwed up”
The healer had her hand over her mouth at the display of cruelty. After Ron walked out, Hermione dropped down in to her chair again and burst in to tears, running her hands over her face repeatedly to stop the flow because she was embarrassed that the healer had to see that horrible fight and even more than that she was horrified that she was married to that monster. She raised her eyes to the healers and found her stare not to be judgmental but caring and understanding and that made her cry even harder.
“I have seen miracles in the form of pregnancy many times” Healer Brett informed Hermione “I’ve seen it from one night stands, forgotten potions, teen pregnancy, marriage, planned and unplanned and rape…especially after the war” Hermione nodded “The baby is either given to a family that had been wishing for one or it made the family or person carrying it happier than anyone else in the world. But if it’s one thing that I have never seen, it’s a baby that has brought a broken marriage together”
“What do you mean?” Hermione asked, though she was pretty sure that she already knew.
“What if you get pregnant tomorrow night?” The healer asked “If the marriage is as bad as I assume it is and he leaves in five years that leaves you with a child and you trying to support it” Hermione nodded “And what if he doesn’t leave. What if he stays but then parades his infidelities all around the place in public then your child has to see that which can severely mess it up and you could become a laughing stock”
“You know how divorce in the magical world works” Hermione reminded her “I’ll be a laughing stock anyway”
“True” The healer said as she started to stand up from her desk and lead Hermione towards the door “But at least you’ll have your self-respect”
End Memory:
Harry Potter looked out the window of his and Ginny’s home in Godrics Hollow and found a beautiful and regal owl looking back at him with a haughty look on its face. For some odd reason Harry couldn’t help but think of a Malfoy as he walked slowly to the window, it would be just like them to have such a stuck up animal in their house. He snorted to himself as he walked over to the window and tried to let the bird in but it merely stuck out its leg so he could relieve it of its burden. When Harry had the letter in his hands the bird took off making sure to cuff him in the head as it left.
“What’s that?” Ginny asked as she walked in to the kitchen with James on her hip.
“Letter” Harry said, waving it a bit “For me”
“From who?” Ginny asked as she walked closer to him “An invitation maybe?”
“Letter” He answered again, she raised a brow at him and put the baby in the highchair before puttering around to make breakfast.
“Ron sent a letter last night” Ginny informed her husband “He’s coming over tonight with his new girlfriend for dinner”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Harry asked her, the thought of meeting Ron’s new girlfriend made his stomach hurt a bit and, not the first time, he wished he could talk to Hermione again but knew that she hated him now and with good reason.
“Does it matter?” Ginny snapped “I’m making dinner, he’s my brother and it’s my house”
“It’s my house” Harry muttered.
“Excuse me?!” Ginny turned her irritated light brown eyes towards him “What did you say?”
“Never mind” Harry muttered, walking away, as he left the room he heard her say ‘That’s what I thought’. Harry sighed and entered his study, the only room in the entire house that Ginny never dared to enter which meant it was the only room that he was actually comfortable in. He opened the letter that was in his hands and sat down at his desk.
Dear Harry,
I am very upset and disappointed with you. I feel that telling you the truth is best, you never listened to my side of what was happening and as usual you took Ron’s side without any thought about me. As usual I had a rough time but have landed on my feet and I guess I should thank you for ignoring me when I needed you the most, had you helped me I may have just leaned on you and not found myself.
When I married Ronald I had a plan, we would be married, I would get my dream job that I always wanted and only when we had a home and were established in our jobs would we try for children. All went well, of course that was until we tried to have a baby then everything went to hell, I wasn’t getting pregnant and Ron started to become a monster worse and worse with each month that went by that didn’t result in a pregnancy. All we ever did was fight, Ron started to become almost violent in bed, each time we had sex it was closer and closer to rape than making love. The last time we went to the Healers office to see if I was able to even get pregnant. I am fine and then Ron went insane and was very cruel to me even the Healer suggested that we not stay together. When I brought up the fact that maybe the problem lay with him and not with me he threw divorce in my face and I didn’t fight him. I wanted so much for you to at least listen to me but you turned your back and just because Ginny told you to.
Well there’s my side of what happened and now you know so if you want to get in touch with me I am staying with a friend. Just send the letter to Malfoy Manor and that’s where it will find me.
Have a good day,
Hermione Granger.

Hermione was overseeing the cleaning of the dining room at Malfoy Manor. She’d been there for almost two weeks and though she did see Draco in the evening it really was like she was living on her own. The house was very lonely and if it weren’t for Kippy she’d likely be talking to herself just for a source of entertainment. So far, she’d had the front sitting room cleaned top to bottom the dust was gone and everything was vacuumed. It was the only room other than her bedroom that she was comfortable in because it wasn’t disgusting. The front hallway was also being cleaned top to bottom and while the elves were very quiet so as not to disturb the ‘master’ of the house, Hermione was not.
“KIPPY!” Draco screamed from his bedroom at one in the afternoon and Hermione smirked to herself. The little elf ran by with a nervous look on her face and shot the muggle-born woman a small look of accusation. Kip was gone for about twenty minutes before there was a pop that sounded in the kitchen and heavy footsteps coming down the hallway.
“Granger!” Draco growled from the top of the stairs and she walked, unhurried, out of the dining room.
“Good morning, Draco” Hermione greeted “How are you?”
“Don’t be cute with me, Granger” Draco hissed “I know that you’ve screwed with something in my room…I don’t know what but you have”
“You’re right” Hermione said, crossing her arms over her chest “I set up a silent alarm to go off first at three but you seem to always wake up then so I changed it to two and now at one”
“What the hell…why?” He was not amused “And why a silent one?”
“You need to get back in to the world of the living” Hermione informed him “You have a billion-galleon company and over half your staff don’t even know what you look like, your investors may be rich dicks but they need to see who their working with!”
“And what about you, Miss Granger?” Draco snapped as he slowly walked down the stairs “Talk about me moving on after just two weeks but I don’t see you trying to reclaim your life”
“I’m still licking my wounds from my war” Hermione informed as she started up the stairs to meet him there “You’ve had damn near ten years to get over your shit life”
“No I haven’t!” He snapped at her.
“Because you’re not letting yourself!” Hermione all but screamed, they stood looking at one another both with chests heaving and anger coloring their eyes.
“If you kiss” Said a dreamy little voice “Then I may faint with happiness”
“Luna?” Hermione turned to look at the odd, blonde-haired woman standing there in a bright yellow long-sleeved dress and a smile on her face “What are you doing here?”
“Visiting my favorite cousin” Luna answered “Nice to see you awake so “early” in the morning…and Hermione, I haven’t seen you in ages” She looked around the still highly dilapidated house “What are you doing here?”
“I live here” Hermione answered “Cousin?”
“I don’t know why it’s so shocking” Draco said as he brushed by “Almost all the pure-blooded magical families are related either through marriage or blood…or both”
“You were never friends in Hogwarts” Hermione pointed out as she walked down the steps “Why now?”
“Why don’t we have some tea?” Luna offered, by the time they were sitting in the front living room Kippy had already brought in some tea and small sandwiches.
“So…” Hermione led “Why are you suddenly friends?”
“Not so sudden” Luna said “By the time Draco and his family were standing trial before the Wizengamont I was already a year in to University” Hermione nodded “Of course I followed the news and knew that Draco and his mother had been sentenced to house-arrest. I knew that that was a terrible fate no matter how you looked at it and that they would likely become very lonely so I started a program at my University that matched willing students to non-violent prisoners from the war and I lined myself with the Malfoy family”
“That’s wonderful” Hermione said, taking a sip of her tea “What exactly did you do?”
“I spent the first three months fighting with this one” She elbowed Draco in the ribs “To let me in to the house and once that happened I got to talk with Mrs. Malfoy about what was happening in the outside world, sometimes I’d bring her things that she wanted or missed”
“And Draco?” Hermione asked, thinking that she could very well learn many things about him from Luna “What did you do with him?”
“Actually” Luna grinned “He wouldn’t even acknowledge my presence until a little after…well, when he was alone in the house. Then it was mainly just sitting together, occasionally we would play chess, read together, walk around the house...it became an uneasy truce which lead in to something like a friendship”
“I’m going to go back” Draco said, glaring at Hermione “To bed for a few hours”
“Sleep well” Luna said, with a small frown.
“Yeah, sweet dreams…Draco” Hermione smirked at him and as he was going up the stairs he shot her a middle finger before disappearing.
“Luna” Hermione said the minute she was certain that Malfoy was gone “If you’ve been visiting him since the start of their house-arrest than why the hell have you let this house fall in to such disrepair?”
“It wasn’t like this when Mrs. Malfoy was alive” Luna said sadly “It was something that happened after. He fired all their human servants, offered freedom to the house-elves, sent the ones that didn’t want freedom to different places for work and only hired elves that wanted pay and then just…disappeared and the house fell in to…this”
“Well I’m bringing it back to what it used to look like…mind you it’ll look a little friendlier” Hermione smiled “I’m cleaning up the inside of the house and then I’ll focus on the outside and then maybe I’ll start helping Malfoy himself”
“Why does it mean so much to you?” Luna asked “He goes his way and you go yours, that’s the way it has always been with you two and not allowing your paths to cross was always the plan, right?” Luna’s light blue eyes followed Hermione as she stood and paced around the room and she frowned.
“I don’t know, Luna” Hermione said “I just feel that if a Malfoy can allow themselves to fall so far and not get back up then maybe…maybe there’s absolutely no hope for me”
“I don’t think that’s how it works” Luna said slowly “But I understand that you’re hurt and focusing your mind on someone else means you don’t have to focus on yourself”
“Is that so bad?” Hermione asked with a small smile “I’m sorry, it’s been a while since anyone’s talked to me about, well…me”
“What happened with Harry?” Luna asked.
“Took Ron’s side” Hermione said “Naturally, Ginny leads him around by his nose, the Weasleys all think I’m a monster for not being able to have a child…”
“When really it was likely his fault” The Ravenclaw pointed out “The Weasleys are an old magical family and though they claim to be above the whole ‘pure-blood’ thing, up until the marriage between you and Ronald they only married other pure-bloods which means there’s a load of inbreeding in that family and that’s probably why you couldn’t get pregnant” She shrugged “I bet Ron’s sterile and of course he’ll refuse to get checked out. I wonder what his excuse will be when his little girlfriend doesn’t get pregnant when he wants it”
“Girlfriend?” Hermione repeated “Lavender take him back?”
“Lavender?” Luna laughed “Holy Merlin, no. He did go to her and tried to rekindle things with her but, according to Padma Zabini, Lavender told him to and I quote ‘go fuck himself’ and that she wouldn’t be making the ‘same mistake twice’ I’m quite happy”
“Me too” Hermione said, honestly shocked that Lavender would be so smart “So if he’s not with her then who is he with?”
“Some twenty year old war-hero fanatic” Luna answered “She was a Hufflepuff who seems to think that he’s some kind of wonderful when we all know that he’s a piece of…well, you know”
“Some little bimbo” Hermione guessed and Luna nodded.
“I should go” Luna said, standing up and looking around the house “Good luck with this” She gestured around the house “If you need some help call me, I am running my fathers paper now that he is living in Africa looking for a the creatures he told me about when I was a child. For the most part I am free in the mornings, right up until one in the afternoon that’s when I start to work on the paper”
“Thank you” Hermione said, she saw her friend to the door and opened it.
“Hermione” Luna stopped “I have been visiting Draco once to twice a month for the last seven years. At this point I am the person who knows him best and just…be gentle with him, don’t push him too much…he is far more delicate than he lets on”
“I know” Hermione smiled at her, Luna gave her a hug and then walked out, avoiding the rocks that had somehow found their way in to the walkway since the time she had come up it two weeks ago.
“Miss Granger” Kippy spoke from the doorway leading in to the now gleaming dining room “I understand that Master Draco is letting you work here but…you are not to wake him up earlier than he pleases unless he tells you otherwise!”
“Did Master Draco tell you to tell me this?” Hermione asked.
“No” Kippy said “But I know him and…”
“I am sick of everyone telling me what to do” Hermione snarled at the little elf, she took a deep breath and calmed herself “He hired me to manage the house, I am. I’m having it cleaned and getting it fixed up but I am also going to fix him as well if I am able to”
“But…” Kippy started, twisting her fingers.
“If he gets mad at you send him my way” Hermione told her “He can yell at me all he wants, I don’t care and I am not afraid of him…in fact, as house manager I relieve you from your duties of answering him every time he wakes up. I need you to keep an eye on the cleaning crew, I need that sharp eye of yours…leave Draco to me”
“But…” Kippy looked down when Hermione raised her brow at her “Okay, Miss Granger, you are the house manager”
Draco was standing at the top of the stairs just around the corner leaning against the wall. He’d heard the conversation that Luna and Hermione had had, he knew that Luna was worried about him and she was also trying to protect him. Hermione on the other hand sounded like she wanted nothing more than to pull the rug out from under his feet. She wanted to do her job, the job that he’d hired her to do when he saved her from becoming a whore and the way she started was cleaning a few rooms and forcing him to wake up earlier thinking that getting him back in the world was a good idea. Hermione Granger couldn’t just be happy with making his house look pretty and to spend his money, she had to always do things the hard way. He smirked to himself, fine if she wanted to do her difficult job then he would make sure that she was working hard.
