Chapter 2: The Strange Misfortune of Hermione Granger, Part 1
It was the end of summer and temperatures were at an all time high. The wind did not blow, leaving the air stagnant and humid. This night Hermione Granger lay in bed, dizzy and in a daze, not because of the suffocating heat but because for the past three weeks she had moved very little, finding no motivation to leave the house and even less to eat. Her depression was beginning to make her ill, and her guardian, Arabella Figg, worried about her health constantly.
When she first arrived here she was found wandering the streets, confused and without any form of identification. Albus Dumbledore was notiied because they did not know who else to contact, and the older wizard did not ask her anything.
She remembered very clearly that he had watched her from beneath his half moon spectacles and said in a very calm, quiet tone, 'you know the rules Ms. Granger. I am not able to assist you in helping you to return to where you came from. You being here is, in many ways, a tragic miracle because to my knowledge no one has been able to achieve what you have done and not suffered some sort of horrible consequence. Furthermore, regardless of the information you possess, you do know the consequences of interfering with that which has already come to pass. Eloise Mintumble caused the unbirth of over twenty five of her descendants for meddling. I cannot control what you choose to do, Ms. Granger, but I hope that when you make any decision you never forget her terrible fate.'
This conversation lasted no more than three minutes. Reflecting on everything, her entire life became a great cosmic joke in a matter of hours. She was handed over to Ms. Figg, who was to act as her guaradian. Hermione was, officially, her distant relative.
Although her basic needs were taken care of: she had food and shelter, an alias and an alibi, she would soon be starting her sixth year at school as a transfer student. But the universe laughed at her.
How many thousands of hours did she invest in studying? She had a promising future ahead of her. In addition, her talents were invaluable in helping stop the dark lord from achieving his goals and even helped save lives. Hermione was proud of her accomplishments and excited to face the newest challenges together with her friends.
Everything that she valued disappeared like smoke. 'You are utterly useless Hermione Granger.' She burrowed deeper into the sheets, damp from her sweat and who knew what else. Mrs. Figg's propensity for cats clearly began long before 1971.
Mrs. Figg knocked on the door befor entering with another tray. She either didn't see or didn't care about the plates of untouched food in the room. Carrying one of her cats, she sat down beside the bed and nervously fidgeted. Hermione stared off in a daze and did not say anything, she merely sat up and took a sip of the luke warm water beside her bed.
'Ms. Granger I don't know a great deal about your situation but I don't want you to die. Please eat something.'
Hermione choked on her water, causing the other woman to jump up and gingerly pat her back. The reaction was oddly endearing and she suddenly felt very bad for her lack of gratitude and for making her worry. But who was she kidding?
'Thank you Mrs. Figg. I think by the time school starts I wll be back to normal. I promise to eat something tonight.'
She nodded her head up and down and then quickly exited the room, as if the thought of providing her any more comfort would cause a problem. Hermione plopped back onto her side.
The real issue was how every skill she had was suddenly rendered useless. In effect, she needed to blend in and not stand out, which would require considerable effort in dumbing herself down. Drawing attention to herself might raise questions, and questions could create ripples. At all costs she needed to avoid triggering something like a butterfly effect.
Survival was most important, but it meant not standing out, not drawing attention, not showcasing her talents--she couldn't even ask others for help to get home. She didn't know how to get back because she didn't even know how she got here. To make her situation even more miserable was the knowledge that she had information that could save the lives of others but she couldn't do anything with it--not unless she wanted to risk ruining the lives of others in the future, or worse, causing people to not be born.
She rolled over again in the sheets. Everything was big mess. She couldn't recall ever feeling this helpless.
So we can all see what Hermione's status is. Next up, Hermione decides what to do to address her situation. Unfortunately, it will be a little bit longer before she meets Lucius.
