Chapter 3
~The Revelation~
Minerva and Severus were both covered in sweat after dealing with the ancient magic. Neither of them would know if it had worked until they were able to examine Pansy. Poppy already had chocolate ready and waiting to go for them to eat when they were ready. A heavy silence filled the already quiet room. Finally, Severus looked up.
“Poppy….chocolate….please,” he said, his voice thick. She reached it out to him and he ate every bite in silence. She handed a piece to Minerva who ate it quickly and without question. She took the final piece over to Pansy, who was laying very still on the bed.
“Open up, my dear, and take a bite,” Poppy held the chocolate up to Pansy’s mouth. “Don’t try to speak until you’ve finished the entire piece.”
The trio finished their chocolate in silence. No one dared to speak yet as they recovered. Severus looked around at the people in the room. If anyone had told him fifteen years ago that he would attempt to hide something from the Dark Lord, he would have tortured them on sight. As it was, when the previous Dark Lord was defeated and replaced by someone who was even worse, Severus was walking a tightrope between the light side and the dark side. If the task that he, Minerva, and Poppy had completed was successful, it would completely tip him to the light side. If it had not been successful….well, I just don’t want to think of that at the moment, he thought to himself.
“Minerva, will you please check Pansy?” he looked at the Headmistress, still too out of it to check her himself.
Minerva nodded. She gently touched the tip of her wand to Pansy’s right temple and hesitated. The results would show them quickly enough if the spell had worked. The wand tip would flash green if it had been successful; red if it had failed. Pansy’s eyes opened when she felt the wand touch her, as a quick flash of panic was overtaken by Slytherin coolness. She didn’t want to show them just how worried she was. She knew they would all be in danger if the spell had failed.
“Reprehendo effectus!”
Minverva’s eyes widened as she felt her wand grow warm in her hand. She held her breath as she waited for the wand to glow…..green. A smile lit her face as she raised her eyes to look at the others. Even the normally stoic Severus had a grin on his face. They had done it. Poppy dabbed her eyes and tears were once again flowing down Pansy’s cheeks, her cool Slytherin demeanor forgotten.
Pansy broke the silence.
“It worked?”
“Yes, Miss Parkinson, it certainly did,” Minerva answered, stowing her wand in her robe. “The Dark Lord will only see the memories from the last few hours if he decides to ‘check up’ on you.”
“Thank you, Headmistress,” Pansy sighed in relief. “I don’t think he’ll be ‘checking up’ on me in the next few days or so, though. Just before I came down here, he was busy preparing for a ritual that is supposed to take anywhere from three to seven days. The more thorough it is, the longer it will take.”
“What kind of ritual?” Severus inquired, his face full of confusion. He had not heard anything like this the last time he spoke to the Dark Lord.
“You mean you don’t know, Professor?” she asked Severus, her eyebrow furled. He shook his head, still confused. Pansy sighed heavily. “Unfortunately, I can’t say anything more about it; he forced me to perform the Unbreakable Vow with him about the details of it.”
“Do you know if anyone else knows of the ritual?” Minerva asked Pansy, concern filling her face.
“The last time I actually saw him was eight months ago,” Pansy started explaining. “When we spoke of it, and I was forced to take the Vow, the Dark Lord told me he was going to do all the research for it himself. He said when the time for the ritual came closer, he would bring in his inner circle and explain to them what was to happen.”
“What about the person performing the Vow?” Poppy asked with a frown. “Surely they would have said something to someone.”
“The person who performed the Vow on us was Obliviate’ed immediately after we completed it,” Pansy replied sadly, casting her eyes down again. “The Dark Lord knew that if he killed the person, we would be released from the Vow, so he figured he would be safe if he performed the Memory Charm on him.”
“I assume that you don’t know who performed the Vow?” Severus asked, pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Unfortunately, no,” Pansy whispered. “He removed that part of my memory.” She started trembling in fear. “He is so much more powerful and so much darker than V-v….you-know-who. He found and studied the magic that even you-know-who wouldn’t touch.” Pansy shuddered as she remembered some of the things she had witnessed at the Dark Lord’s hand. “He is so much more violent and has even less patience for mistakes. No one is safe from him if they cross him even slightly.” She started talking faster, as though she couldn’t stop the words that were spilling from her lips. “Torture is his specialty, especially after his childhood. By the time the Dark Lord is finished torturing you, he won’t grant you a swift death even if you beg for it. He will leave you to suffer with the cuts and slashes he believes you’ve earned. And he prevents the injuries from healing so that you will bleed to death, even if the cuts are small. He doesn’t care how long it takes you to die and he makes an example of every person who has earned the punishment. And if you are lucky enough to earn your life back because he gets bored with waiting, he makes the Cruciatus Curse look like the Tickling Charm. Violence and torture feeds him and he constantly hungers for more. Nothing is off the table with the Dark Lord.”
Pansy looked up to see tears streaming down Minerva’s and Poppy’s faces. Even Severus had the whisper of tears in his eyes when Pansy stopped talking. He had served under Voldemort and knew Voldemort was violent and vengeful, but someone who was worse than him? It just didn’t seem possible. Of course, he hadn’t seen the Dark Lord in over a year, so he couldn’t have known just how violent he had become. The Dark Lord almost never invited his Inner Circle to witness the punishments unless it was one of their own who had angered the Dark Lord. Instead, the audience for the punishments were always those of the lower ranks so that they knew exactly what was awaiting them should they anger the Dark Lord.
“Believe me, I’m not telling you this to scare you,” Pansy looked every one of them in the eyes. “Even though I know it does. I’m telling you this to warn you. If you are to defeat him, absolutely everyone that is against him needs to work together. If he completes this ritual, he will be unstoppable and he will reign over all. And I can’t let that happen.” Tears spilled from her eye as her hands went to her abdomen as if to protect her child. “I want my child to be raised by me and the father. I want my child to grow up in a world that is not ruled by fear, but rather by hope and love. If the Dark Lord wins and reigns supreme,” Pansy’s voice was thick with emotion. “He will have the father tortured over and over and over again and not allow him to die, not only as an example to others, but also to me. He’ll do it publically as a way to tell everyone not to mess with something that is his.” She again looked everyone in the eyes as she slowly spoke her next words. “He. Cannot. Be. Allowed. To. Win.”
One by one, Minerva, Poppy, and Severus came forward to hug her; to comfort her. They each whispered that they would do anything and everything in their power to help defeat him. They offered words of comfort to show her that they were on her side and they would protect her and her child with their lives. When Minerva pulled back, she asked the question that they were all thinking.
“Who is the father of your baby?”
Pansy’s face pulled into a tight smile. She knew they would ask her that question sooner or later. She had expected it much sooner, though. Up until that night, only she and the father had known that she was pregnant. Don’t worry, my love, she thought as she rubbed her abdomen. I promise I will keep you safe from any harm….even if that means keeping your father a secret for a while longer.
“Before I answer that question, I would like to talk with him and let him know what happened tonight,” she answered, sitting up for the first time since the spell. “He needs to know what happened and he needs to understand why it had to happen. And I would like to tell him that I will be letting you all know who he is. I hope you understand.” She finished her sentence with a silent plea.
“Of course we understand, Miss Parkinson,” Severus replied, helping her off the bed. “Do you know when you’ll be meeting with him?”
“Not exactly, no,” Pansy said. She looked at the clock at the front of the classroom, surprised that it was after midnight. “I’ll send him a note asking him to meet and hope that he isn’t asleep. Maybe I’ll have the owl peck him until he wakes up,” she joked, a warm smile on her face.
“Let me know after your meeting how it went and if he is prepared to meet with us,” Minerva smiled at the 7th year student. “I’ll have all of us meet in my office at whatever time you need.”
“Thank you, Headmistress,” Pansy smiled back at her. “I’ll prepare the note in my common room and head straight to the owlery once it’s complete.”
“Instead of going all the way up to the owlery, and potentially being waylaid, call for Fawkes,” Minerva offered. “He’ll take the note where it needs to go.”
“Thank you for your generosity, Headmistress,” Pansy gave her a bright smile. “I greatly appreciate it. I’ll head to the common room now and get it ready. Professor Snape, Madame Pomfrey, thank you, as well.” she nodded to the two as she left the classroom. As she was leaving, she didn’t see the enduring looks or the looks of concern from the three adults left in the classroom.
She reached the Slytherin common room without an issue. She grabbed her parchment and quill and began to write.
Tarako,
I need to meet with you as soon as possible. There is something important that we need to discuss. I’ll be waiting in our room. Please, lo’u alofa, I need to see you.
Yours,
Blossom
