Chapter 3
After living with the Dursleys for 10 years, Harry had a few things engraved in his mind, some of which are:
You’re a burden.
You deserve it, freak.
Shut up and stay out of the way.
And that’s exactly what he did. For the rest of the term, Harry avoided Snape as best as he could and became incredibly passive during Potions, ignoring even Malfoy’s tauntings. He still got detentions of course, but he no longer tried to protest. In his mind, whenever he saw Snape it was like seeing Uncle Vernon, and it made the unfair treatment he was receiving easier to accept.
Hermione and Ron had noticed his change in behaviour and became increasingly worried about him when Harry wouldn’t answer why he was avoiding Snape. Harry was grateful for his friends and told them not to worry, that he was used to it. But he didn’t see the point of telling them that it was all just reflexes conditioned into him after years of abuse, and although he was very happy being in Hogwarts, it wasn’t something he could break easily.
They weren’t the only ones who noticed something had changed.
Snape felt something was off about the boy. Snape rarely saw him outside class and he wasn’t as cheeky or as arrogant as a Gryffindor should be. He was probably just entering puberty. A very nice change indeed, Snape noted and went about his day terrorizing the students.
“Harry, you need to eat something,” Hermione softly said, worried about the sleep-deprived boy in front of her, who kept poking at his chicken.
“I’m not hungry,” He pushed the plate away from him. It was true. Between the exams, the stabbing pain on his forehead, and the detentions he kept getting from Snape, food was the last of his worries. He was used to not eating anyway, and the hunger allowed him to think better. He found that he would get sleepy quickly if he ate. And tonight he had another detention with Snape, so getting sleepy wasn’t an option. “I better get going to detention,” Harry stood up.
“We’ll walk you there,” Ron offered and Harry gave a small smile.
On the corner next to the dungeon, Hermione - who had been silent the whole time they were walking - suddenly whispered, “This is about the lily, isn’t it?”
Ron and Harry stared at her, wide-eyed and confused.
“What are you talking about?”
“What did Snape do to the lily, Harry?”
“He…” Harry trailed off, remembering the fireplace and feeling the hurt coming back anew. It was so sudden and intense that it made his stomach hurt. “He burned it.”
Both Ron and Hermione gasped in disbelief.
“That ungrateful git!” Ron hissed and for once, Hermione didn’t bother to scold him. She rubbed comforting circles on Harry’s back.
“Don’t let it get to you Harry, you didn't do anything wrong,” She whispered soothingly. Harry was full of happiness for his friends and sadness for Snape at the same time, and not knowing what to do with his feelings, he pulled them both in for a tight hug.
“Thank you,” He muttered into their shoulders.
“You’re gonna be late for detention,” Ron said after a few seconds. Hermione glared at him for ruining the moment and Harry chuckled. He said bye to them both before going into Snape’s office, 3 minutes late. He braced himself for the sarcastic comment he was sure to get, but was surprised to find Snape just sitting behind his desk calmly, reading older students’ essays.
“I-I’m sorry for being late,” Harry said quietly. Snape gave an acknowledging nod and gestured to a table which already had a cauldron and several ingredients on it.
“You’ll be making a simple cure for boils potion tonight. You may start,” Snape said curtly and returned to his essays.
Harry worked on his potion silently, wondering what was up with Snape. He felt extremely thrilled when his potion turned blue and started emitting a pink smoke, a sign that his potion was a success. “Professor, I-” He called Snape excitedly, then remembered where he was and dropped his voice, “I’m finished, sir.”
Snape went over and checked the potion without saying anything, making Harry squirm with anxiety. Had he done something wrong? Was it a failure?
“You may go after you bottled this,” Snape finally said, handing him a vial. Harry quickly filled the vial and left the dungeon after giving it back to Snape, who nodded dismissively at him.
Harry’s steps were unsteady as he went back to Gryffindor tower and he had to stop to take a deep breath before climbing the stairs.
Snape sat back down and let out a long sigh, burying his head in his hands. For the whole detention, he hadn’t been paying attention to the essays at all. His eyes kept flickering over to the boy who was concentrating so hard he hadn’t noticed him staring.
Snape had accidentally overheard the three of them talking to each other next to the dungeon and realized that Harry was intentionally avoiding him because he thought Snape had burned the lily. He felt a little guilt creeping at the back of his mind, but was pushed back by thoughts of James. However, he still couldn’t bring himself to be sarcastic with the boy when he entered his office.
His guilt grew stronger when he heard Harry excitedly calling him and how the excitement dropped from his voice almost immediately when he remembered where he was.
No, Snape shook his head. I didn’t burn the lily. He made that assumption by himself. I have nothing to be guilty about.
But he kept feeling restless the rest of the night.
Snape and McGonagall ran past all the traps the teachers had set up to guard the Stone straight towards the innermost room which held the Mirror of Erised. They arrived in time to see Dumbledore pull what was left of Quirrell off of the unconscious Harry Potter, who held the Stone tightly in his hand, his scar bleeding freely. Something wrenched his gut as he gently brushed off his former colleague’s ashes from Harry’s face.
This isn’t James.
This is Harry.
