On Sunday afternoon, Malfoy was back in Hermione’s flat. They were trying to finish the wording of the proposal, but Hermione could tell that his thoughts weren’t really with it. He seemed distracted and upset.
‘Are you okay, Malfoy?’ she asked.
He looked up at her in surprise. ‘Sorry,’ he said. ‘Did you say something?’
‘I had,’ she said. ‘But you don’t seem to be paying attention today.’
He looked at her seriously and she wasn’t sure why. ‘Granger, I just need to know. Are you only helping me with this so that you can get your boyfriend back to Britain?’
Hermione’s face screwed up in confusion. ‘What are you talking about?’
‘Weasley works at the Romanian Reserve. If this project goes ahead, then he might be able to start working here, and would be closer to you.’
Hermione gave a weak laugh. ‘First of all, Charlie is not my boyfriend.’
It was Malfoy’s turn to look confused. ‘It sure looked…’ he started, but Hermione had continued. ‘I’m more like a – lodger?’ she said, trying to find the right word. ‘Whenever he is in London, which is usually only every few months, he comes here for a place to stay.’
Malfoy looked around, ‘So he what, sleeps on your sofa?’
Hermione’s cheeks blushed at this. ‘Er. No.’
Malfoy looked closely at her bright pink cheeks and putting two and two together in his head, he said in a haughty voice, ‘Hermione Granger, are you a – booty call?’
Hermione snorted at his Muggle phrase. Then, reluctantly, she nodded her head.
He chuckled. ‘I did not think you were one for casual sex, Granger.’
She frowned. ‘It’s not really that casual. I mean, Charlie and I have…history.’
Malfoy leaned forward, now interested. ‘History?’
‘He was…my first,’ she said, though she didn’t know why she was telling this to Malfoy.
‘Really?’ he asked in surprise. ‘I always thought you and the Weasel…’
Hermione shook her head. ‘No, that just – it didn’t work out. And Charlie was there to comfort me about it,’ she said, severely curtailing the story. Draco Malfoy did not need to know that Ron actually hadn’t been able to take her virginity and that it had taken Charlie’s rougher nature and larger attributes to rid her of that particularly difficult problem. ‘And the rest is history.’
Malfoy nodded, taking in this new information. ‘And second of all?’
Hermione’s eyebrows knitted as she remembered what her second point was. ‘Charlie loves Romania. He wouldn’t want to leave, even if there was something available here. I’m not doing this for Charlie, Malfoy. I’m doing this because it’s a great idea that deserves to be funded.’
Seemingly happier now about her motives, Malfoy finally got his head back in the game and they worked through the rest of the proposal. They had just finished the final copy around dinner time. ‘Do you want to get some food?’ Hermione asked, her tummy growling.
‘What are you thinking?’ he asked.
‘Er, takeaway, or we could go somewhere?’
Malfoy’s stomach gave a rumble as well and he said, ‘Takeaway sounds good.’
They deliberated what to order and finally decided on a Chinese. Once they had ordered, Hermione said, ‘Do you watch telly?’
He chuckled, ‘Of course.’
They started chatting about which shows they both liked, and which ones they both thought were horrible – the latter being a much longer list. Then they got into a heated debate about which film they thought was the best. Hermione was adamant about her choice, and Malfoy being such a hot-head was also sure about his but neither had seen the other’s favourite.
‘How about this,’ Hermione said finally. ‘We watch my film tonight, and then we watch yours another time, and we can debate it once we have all the information.’
Malfoy seemed happy with her logic and agreed. The food had just arrived when Hermione started her film and they watched it while they ate—sometimes pausing to talk about what had happened.
When it finished, Malfoy said, ‘Alright Granger, I do have to admit that that wasn’t a bad film, but I still think mine is better. How about next Friday you come to my place and we watch it.’
Hermione agreed to this. They both stood up and Malfoy started gathering up the paperwork for the proposal to send up to the wizard in Dumfries. He walked to her door to grab his jacket. Hermione had set up wards so that no one could apparate directly into or out of her flat, including herself. She had set up shielding spells around the area right outside her door so that muggles couldn’t see or hear if anyone apparated to that area. She liked the idea of someone having a key to get through a door – it must just be her muggle upbringing. Ginny Potter was the only person to have a spare key to her flat.
‘Please let me know as soon as you hear back about that,’ she said to Malfoy as he opened the door.
‘Will do,’ he said. ‘I think we might actually have a chance.’
Hermione smiled. ‘See you tomorrow, Malfoy.’
‘Bye, Granger.’

The next couple of months went by quite quickly with work as they were both busy with other projects. They had still not heard back yet on the Dumfries proposal and Draco was getting quite nervous now that it might be rejected.
The Friday following the night at Granger’s, she had come over to his flat to watch his favourite film. Granger’s film had seemed like it was going to be a flouncy romantic pile of drivel, but it had had just the right amount of drivel mixed with comedy, action and adventure.
However, he still thought that his was better.
After they had watched his, they debated the pros and cons of both films and found that in their own genres they were both very good but actually couldn’t be compared like for like. In this vein, they decided that they needed to watch more films in the same genres in order to see if there was anything on the same level. This then evolved into recurring film and takeaway Friday nights, alternating between their flats each week.
They had also kept bumping into each other on Sunday mornings while running in the park, so had decided that they should just meet up at the same time and run together – that way they could push each other to be faster and better.
Draco would never admit it to anyone, especially because she was his boss, but he found he actually quite liked Granger. Not in a romantic way, not at all—after all, she was still overbearing, and had wild, bushy hair and quite plain features—but maybe as a friend? He had never really had a real friend before – most of the people that he had spent time with in school were just children of other Death Eaters that his parents had forced him to make nice with. The only people that he had ever actually liked from school had been Blaise Zabini and Pansy Parkinson. Pansy seemed like a simple and foolish girl, but she had actually been quite clever in school without wanting to show it.
The last he heard, Blaise and Pansy had married a couple of years after Hogwarts and had been expecting their first child together.
Draco dropped his head into his hands. He was at work and had really finished all of his tasks for the day. He looked over at the clock on the wall and it was pointed to, ‘Not quite yet!’ He tried to fish around his desk for something else to start working on when there was a quick knock on the door and Granger put one foot into the office. ‘Malfoy, can I speak to you for a moment.’
He stood up immediately and walked towards the door, a bit surprised by the intrusion. It was almost time to leave on a Thursday afternoon, he wondered what she wanted. Though they had kind of become friends and saw each other outside of work, there was an unspoken agreement to keep things professional while in the office.
When he got to her office, she said, ‘Sit down, please.’
He sat at the chair across from her desk. She slid an envelope across her desk to him. It had his name on it. ‘This just came from upstairs,’ she said with a smile.
His heart jumped in his chest. This was it. This was his project – his baby. He wanted so bad for this to succeed, and he would be so disappointed if all their hard work was for naught.
‘Come on, Malfoy, open it!’ Granger said, nervously tapping her fingers on the desk.
He looked up at her and sighed. Until he opened that envelope, it could be either approved or not approved. He put his hand out and grabbed the envelope, peeling the wax seal back with suddenly shaky hands.
He flipped the top open and removed the parchment carefully. It was a single piece of parchment folded in three. He took a deep breath and opened it all at once. He only saw the word ‘Congratulations!’ before he threw it back down on the desk with a smile on his face, only wanting to take in the happiness that he felt rather than read the whole thing. Granger grabbed it and conscientious Gryffindor that she was, she read through the entire letter.
‘Oh, Malfoy, this is excellent!’ she said with a grin. Then she turned all business. ‘Okay, we’re going to have to apply for funding now, so I can free up a few of your hours if you want to start filling out the funding requests. Don’t undersell what you need, but don’t get greedy either. We want this to be a shining jewel of the department – you might even get one of those silly awards at the Ministry Gala,’ she said with a small laugh.
The Ministry held a Gala each year that was kind of an awards ceremony for the employees. They had different categories for each of the different departments and any employee that showed excellence or ingenuity could be nominated for an award. Draco laughed at the suggestion that he would even be invited to the Gala, much less receive an award. Somehow, his invitation had always been ‘lost in transit’ in the past.
As he was getting ready to leave her office, Granger said, ‘Still on for a film at mine tomorrow night?’ and he nodded quickly. They were now watching award winning films from each year and arguing if they deserved to win or not. He really did enjoy the mental stimulation of these debates, and honestly he enjoyed the company as well.
