Draco opened his bleary, grey-blue eyes and looked around his wrecked compartment. Just before the breaks had been slammed on, Draco had had the foresight to put himself under the seats across from him. Unfortunately, when they did slam on the breaks, he hit the back of his head against the wall behind his back and was knocked unconscious. His vision was blurry as he looked around him, he’d been lifted off the ground and was trapped against the little gate that usually pressed against the back of the legs of the student sitting there. The compartment was apparently hanging from the tracks, once his head stopped spinning and his vision cleared Draco made sure he had his wand, then he got his bearings and figured out where things were. The door leading out of the compartment was on his right, the broken window, where a good amount of rain and wind were coming through was completely blown out.
“Hello?” He called out weakly.
Draco grabbed his bag and strapped it to himself, pulled his belt from his waist and summoned another one and hooked them together before charming them to himself and attached it to one of the bars and then started to pull himself up towards the door. He had to get out of here, he had to find Granger and make sure that she was okay, they needed to check on the students and get them to safety. Once he wrenched the door open, Draco undid the belts and held on to what should have been the floor and pulled himself upwards and hooked his arms around the next thing big enough to hold himself up. Finally, he was in the hall, he looked above him and gasped, the compartment that Granger and the American had been in was split in half. It’d be a miracle if they hadn’t fallen out, even more of a miracle if they’d had enough time to cast a spell to slow their fall. He listened as hard as he could, but all he could hear was the rain, wind and the strain and creaking of the train that was hanging off the rail. He knew that he had to move quickly, he needed to make sure that Granger was either alive and well or truly dead. That thought made his stomach clench and something that felt like ice slide down his spine at the thought of the world not having her in it.
“Granger?” Draco called as he opened the compartment door and swung his legs over the edge. He didn’t dare drop himself in just yet, he needed to see where she was and where the most and least amount of damage had been done.
“Draco Malfoy?” The American’s voice called out of the dark “What the hell happened?”
“We’ve gone off the track” Draco explained, he really didn’t want to explain this to the other man, but he also knew that it wasn’t right to keep the information from him “The top half of the train is hanging, it looks like the rest of the train is still on the track, we need to see if the kids are okay and then we need to send word to Hogwarts...they’ll send help” He looked around the dark compartment and tried to see Hermione’s mass of honey-brown curls, but saw nothing, it made him nervous “Where’s Granger?”
“She’s right here” Donovan breathed “She hit her head, she’s bleeding really badly, I don’t know if she’s okay”
“Hand her to me” Draco said, laying on his stomach and reaching his arms in “Give her to me, now!”
“How will I know that you’ll save me too?” Donovan asked “Promise me”
“What are you going to do?” Draco asked angrily “Keep hold of her if I say no?!” He swore under his breath “You’d have been a Slytherin, damnit. Fine, you annoying pissant, hand her to me, when I get her up here in a safe and secure spot I’ll reach for you, just know that I won’t strain nor will put myself in danger for you”
“But you will for her?” Donovan couldn’t help asking.
“Do you want to die?” Draco growled “Because I’m about 60% sure I can save her without your help”
Donovan didn’t answer, save for a small smile on his face, then he pulled Hermione further into his arms so that Draco could see her. There was blood pouring down her face from large gash on her forehead, it was matted in her golden-brown hair and there were many bruises on her face and the part of her arms that he could see. Donovan stretched up as far as he could and then tossed the young woman in the air, Draco gasped and reached out as far he could hooking his arms just under both of hers.
“I got you” He whispered, pulling her out the door and placing her on the flat part of the train that was still on the track and then turned back to the compartment. There was a cracking sound and Donovan launched himself up at the last possible moment his hand only just catching Draco’s. They looked at one another for a moment before the Slytherin pulled his arm up and brought the man up to where he could grab the door and help be pulled out of the compartment that fell away seconds later.
“Holy shit” Donovan said as both men sat with Hermione between them looking out of what used to be the front of the train. It was gone now, as was the portion of the tracks that was supposed to be there “It looks like it’s been blow up”
“It does” Draco agreed, he looked down at Hermione and gently wiped the blood from her face. She made a noise, like the softest sigh he’d ever heard and Draco felt like an entire hippogryph had been taken off of his chest “Granger, you need to wake-up" He tapped her cheek gently “Granger! Wake-up now” He leaned a little closer “Come on, Hermione...you need to get to the school and teach the first years how to properly say Leviosa”
“You’re such an idiot” Hermione muttered around a small laugh, which turned into a groan of pain “My head hurts”
“I bet it does” Draco said, looking at her “Let me just...well, honestly, I suck at the whole healing thing”
“I took a few classes at college back home” Donovan said, pulling his wand closer.
“I don’t trust you” Draco hissed.
“I’m not going to hurt her” Donovan snapped at him “I can just...”
“You can just stay away from her” Draco talked over him. Hermione watched them in irritation then shook her head, though it hurt her something fierce, it wasn’t anything compared to the headache they were giving her.
“I can do it” Hermione snapped at them. She reached into her bag and rummaged around a little, before pulling out her bottle of Dittany and applied it to herself, the guys didn’t even notice because they were too busy still arguing about who could do what. While they continued being stupid, Hermione ripped a portion of her shirt and used her spell to wet it and wiped the blood off her face then used the piece of shirt that was covered with her blood to tie her hair back. She rummaged again in the bag and pulled out another potion that took care of her headache and aches and pains.
“Hey!” She snapped them out of their fighting with a snap of her fingers “We need to check on the kids and then send out a Patronis to get help from the school”
They got up and stepped onto the train, looking into each compartment only to find them empty. Hermione wasn’t sure what happened, but she knew that they needed to send the Patronis right away so they could get out of there. She tried numerous times to send the spell to no avail, Draco tried and then Donovan with the same results.
“What do we do now?” She asked them “We’re stuck here, I don’t know what happened to the kids and we don’t know what happened to the tracks”
“We’re on the bridge” Draco said “We’re only about twenty miles away from the nearest town”
“Only” Donovan muttered.
“How do we get off the bridge?” Hermione asked, before they were able to get into another fight.
There wasn’t an answer from either man, they just stood there looking around. All the doors that led outside were open, it was like someone had already been there to save the children, but left them behind. Hermione went to the nearest door and looked downward, it looked to be a couple miles drop down and that was guessing because she couldn’t see what lay beneath as the night was too black. Hermione looked around, gathering as much stuff that was left behind as she could. These were the moments that she was wishing for Harry and Ron, they’d had so many adventures together that she’d feel better to have them with her now. But all she had was a Slytherin that she didn’t trust and an American that she didn’t know, it was not very comforting.
“Okay” Hermione said, steadying her voice as much as she was able to “Here are the facts: The tracks were blown up or removed in some way, by who we don’t know and why...we also don’t know. The kids are gone, but it doesn’t look like they left in much of a hurry, so we’re to assume that another train or carriage sent by the school collected them and didn’t know we were on board, so they never looked for us” The two men nodded “We don’t know how sturdy the rest of the bridge is, we don’t know how far down it is or what lay there, but we need to get off this train and the track” They nodded and Hermione turned back as she’d been about to go look out one of the doors “Oh, and apparently we can’t do magic any stronger than summoning charms and minor healing spells”
“So, you know” Donovan said “Not too hard”
“If we get on the planks right there” Draco said, pointing to the planks right outside the nearest door “We can lower ourselves down to the beams underneath and climb our way down” All three adults stood in the doorway and looked down into the blackness.
“This is crazy” Donovan muttered, he wasn’t complaining exactly, just pointing out what they were all thinking.
“I’ve done worse” Hermione said, almost as if in answer, but more trying to convince herself that she could indeed do what was necessary “Ready?”
“I always wondered what it would be like to be on one of yours and Potters adventures...” Draco said, as he looked at her and nodded “Here we go”
A/N: Third chapter is up and running. Sorry if I seem to be stopping it before the adventure, but I like to draw it out a bit. Please review!!
