The following days proved Snape to be entirely right. Miaslithered out of his reach like an eel every time he approached her. Thatavoidance strategy only could last until their next potions class though, thenshe eventually had to face him. For both of them a difficult situation! Actingnormal like teacher and student should but at the same time slinking aroundthat huge elephant in the room, resulted in a temporary truce! However, whenthe lesson ended at long last, that status quo was gone in an instant.
"Miss Anderson, stay behind! We have totalk!" Mia sighed and dropped her bag, waiting for her classmates to clearthe room.
"I'd like to apologize to you!" He finallybegan, the moment the door had closed. Mia though was unwilling to let himfinish.
"I don't care, Professor!" She picked up herbag, then gazed at him for a short while, her face worn, tired and pale.
"Is there anything else?" she asked. As soonas Snape shook his head she turned and left. He didn't try to stop her!
--***--
As if a switch had been turned, things indeed wentback to normal or at least almost. The quality of Mia's potions hadsignificantly decreased since she had decided to drop the subject. Her performanceduring lessons was now even less than average! Every time Snape had her in classes,he secretly hoped that she would show her outstanding abilities again. But shedidn't! So, right before the term ended he had to confront her at last.
"A word, Miss Anderson!" Mia rolled her eyesand gestured Thomas to wait outside.
"I'm in a hurry, Professor! So, please make itquick!" She folded her arms in front of her chest.
"I'd like to have an explanation, why you nolonger putting any effort in your work!" he snarled.
"You still don't get it, do you? I don't careabout potions anymore, and I have no intentions whatsoever to complete thatNEWT! I am still in this class because I have to be! But thankfully that'll beover soon!" she replied coldly.
"And what about your plans? What about yourtalent? Mia –" He closed his eyes and corrected himself.
"Miss Anderson, don't be so headstrong! We bothknow you need that grade!"
"Why do you even care, Professor?" shesnapped at him.
"You're neither my head of house, nor anyacquaintance I consider dear!" And there he finally glimpsed it, thehorrible mixture of hatred and refusal, Snape had to face every time a studentlooked at him. Why he couldn't bear to see that in her eyes of all places, hedidn't know. A muscle twitched in his cheek and a steep crease appeared betweenhis eyebrows.
"You may go!" he hissed and turned away fromher to busy himself at his desk, until he heard the door being closed.

At morning of Christmas Day Mia woke late. Herdormitory already was empty when she finally started to unwrap her presents. Soon, her sheets were strewn with books, new robes, a card game and lots of sweets.Grinning like a Cheshire cat she reached for the last small gift at the foot ofher bed. It was a narrow box containing a never-fading rose. Her grin vanished onceshe had recognized the sharp handwriting on the card. It simply said, 'A rosefor a rose – Merry Christmas!'. Anger flared up and she was about to throw thatdevilish gesture into the fire, but at that very moment the door opened.Hastily she hid the wooden box in her nightstand, before the now entering AliciaSpinnet could ask.
For the rest of the day Mia was in a bad mood. Eventhe prospect of the Yule Ball this evening couldn't cheer her up. But she had promisedto go, so, like everybody else, she dressed herself up. The result wasstunning! She wore light-green dress robes waisted with an ivory-coloured,braided leather belt and light-green heeled shoes. A perfectly matching cloak inivory-colour with light-green ornaments completed the gorgeous picture. Atlast, a handy little spell she had learned for precisely such an occasionhelped her to pin-up her long hair into artistically styled curls and braids.
Thomas was positively beaming when she exited the portraithole. Like a true gentleman he had come to pick her up and accompany her down tothe Great Hall. Mia gave him a little smile, then briefly kissed him on thecheek, while allowing him to take her arm. A couple of weeks ago, after Snapeonce again had tortured her into tears, Thomas had been there to comfort her. Eventuallyhe had confessed his love and had tried to kiss her, but Mia simply couldn'treturn those feelings. She liked Thomas only as a friend! However, rememberingthe particular moment his spirits broke, when she had made herself clear, stillwas painful. On the other hand, she perfectly well knew that he had coped prettywell with her rejection. Now as ever he secretly hoped she might change hermind one day. Therefor she tried not to toy around too much with his heart. Shehad no intention to break it!
"Are youas excited as me?" he dared to ask on the way down the stairs. Mia noddedsilently. That damn wooden box still lingered in her mind. Snape had to bethere, too. She deeply sighed.
"What's wrong Mia? Have I done anything to offendyou?"
"No, Thomas! I'm sorry! If it wasn't for you, I …I wouldn't have come! I'm not well today!" The blond Ravenclaw instantlylooked worried.
"If you don't wanna go, we don't need to!"He passionately said and stopped, but Mia just shook her head.
"No, now I'm dressed to the nines! And to attenda Yule Ball associated with a Triwizard Tournament will be a once in a lifetimething to do! So, let's go! But thanks for suggesting!" Gratefully, shegave him a gentle smile, pecked his cheek once more and they continued theirjourney.
Seeing the mayhem in the Entrance Hall Mia tightenedher grip around Thomas' arm.
"I'm glad you picked me up!" she whispered, while watching the students from different houses desperately trying to find theirpartners. When the guests from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang also entered, thedeafening chaos increased. At last, the doors to the Great Hall opened at precisely8pm and the colourful crowd streamed in. Ooohhhs and aaahhhs could be heardeverywhere. Even Mia completely forgot that rose and looked around inamazement. The walls had all been covered in sparkling silver-frost withhundreds of garlands of mistletoe and ivy crossing the enchanted ceiling. Thomasand Mia found themselves seats near the front table, where the judges alreadywere congregated. Only a few moments later though, the young woman deeplyregretted her choice, as a bunch of teachers, amongst them Severus Snape, occupied the empty chairs next to them. Immediately Mia's mood dropped to a newall-time low.
"Look! There they come!" Thomas wasapplauding the champions' entry enthusiastically. For the now following minutesher potions teacher sitting opposite her was forgotten. The young womansupported both Hogwarts participants as rapturous as her escort. To be honest, HarryPotter only out of Gryffindor pride! Although he was in her house, the fewthings she actually knew about him, she had learned from Angelina, Alicia, Fredor George. As, like them, Cedric too was in her year and on top of that anexceptionally nice guy, her connection with him was way more of a personalmatter. So, in the end, it was a tie between the burning wish for a fellowGryffindor to win the tournament and the friendship she felt for her Hufflepuffclassmate.
To her great relieve Professor McGonagall now alsojoined their table and set next to Mia. The two women exchanged a friendlysmile, then they ordered their food as Dumbledore just seconds earlier haddemonstrated. Her roast beef was delicious and suddenly she was glad to behere! The clattering of silverware filled the hall and echoed off the walls. Itmixed with the various conversations into a stunning atmosphere of pure joy. Nosooner the last plate was emptied, they all rose. With a swing of his wand theheadmaster lined up the round, lantern-lit tables along the sides and withanother swish conjured up a raised platform out of thin air. The crowd wentmental, when the Weird Sisters appeared on stage, picked up their instrumentsand started to play a slow, mournful tune, to which the four champions openedthe dance part of the evening.
At last Thomas led Mia onto the brightly lit dancefloortoo and the two of them accompanied the many other couples already enjoyingthemselves. Even the teachers weren't holding back. With amusement Mia watchedtiny Professor Flitwick swirl Madam Hooch around until the Quidditch refereegiggled girlishly. Professor Dumbledore took over and again the yellow-eyedwitch swivelled in wild turns. Thomas copied that and now it was Mia, who wasspinning in circles like crazy.
"Stop it! I can't go on! I'm feeling dizzy!"she laughed, and her eyes sparkled. The Ravenclaw grinned and took her hand.
"May I accompany you to the garden then, mylady?" he asked. Breathing heavily Mia agreed. Winding paths, rosebushes, statues and living fairy-lights awaited them outside the castle. What aromantic sight! Suddenly the young woman stopped dead.
"I think it's better, if I go back in!" shesaid quietly.
"We're still just friends, Thomas! I'msorry!" The blond Ravenclaw looked devastated. He didn't know how to reactafter his true intentions had been revealed and fled. Mia sighed and followedhim in a distance. After that small catastrophe she originally had planned toreturn to Gryffindor tower early, but the rhythmical tunes lured her back intothe Great Hall. She found herself some other partners to dance, until shefinally was exhausted. Clutching a butterbeer in her hand she set down at anempty table and watched the slowly thinning crowd.
"Are you all right, Miss Anderson?" asked aconcerned looking Professor McGonagall a couple of minutes later and joined herstudent.
"Wasn't Mr. McCane accompanying you?" Mianodded to answer both questions at once.
"Yeah, he was, but I guess he's tired now!" Shesipped her bottle.
"You know, Professor, men are damncomplicated!" The Gryffindor admitted.
"Tell them, your just friends with them and theystill try to score!" McGonagalls usually strict eyes filled with amusement, and she stifled a snort.
"Ah! Here's where the wind is coming from!" Sheput a hand on Mia's arm and the two women plunged into a deep conversationabout the weird behaviour of the opposite sex. Without their notice one ofthose specimens joined them. Bad-tempered as always, Severus Snape listened quietly, until suddenly the headmaster appeared out of nowhere.
"May I, Mia?" Frozen in surprise the youngwoman gazed at him, and it took her some time, to finally accept his offeredarm. A bit confused she stood up and allowed him to lead her to the dancefloor.Dumbledore of all people, the one everybody respects, now even bowed to her. Howodd that felt and a bit unsettling, too!
"I hope, dancing with an old man like me won't overlyembarrass you!" He smiled, while moving quite agile for his age.
"Of cause not, Professor!" Mia responded, her cheeks tinted red.
"To be completely honest with you, I have afavour, I'd like to ask!" Dumbledore gently said, while slowly turning herin a sort of elegant pirouette. Taken aback, Mia gave a curious nod andlistened.
"Could you perhaps grant Professor Snape the nextdance?" The young witch immediately opened her mouth in reluctance, butDumbledores light-blue eyes kindly fixed her gaze and stopped her from actuallyarticulating her protest.
"Please!" he requested politely.
"It would be good for him to have at least oneand I am pretty certain you can handle him!" Before she even could thinkstraight there was a boyish twinkle behind those half-moon spectacles, and he summonedthe potions master. Very sour Snape obeyed.
"Don't be angry with me, Severus!" theheadmaster beamed.
"Our dear Mia here has graciously decided todance with you. So, be civil and don't mess it up!" The dark eyes behind thecurtain of greasy black hair narrowed and Mia clearly could see Snape's larynxmove. A memory struck and for a split-second she saw that man laying naked onhis bed, waiting for her. She feverishly tried to shake off the picture of hiserect penis, but nonetheless her innermost contracted against her will. Miablinked, when he slowly stretched out his hand and waited for her to take it. Themoment she did, Dumbledores smile widened.
"Excellent!" Very pleased with himself, he gavethem some privacy.
It was again a slow tune the Weird Sisters wereplaying. When Snape eventually placed his hand on Mia's hip, her body welcomedthe familiar touch her mind long since had tried to obliterate. Her facesoftened and she allowed him to pull her way closer to him as a teacher shoulddo. Her grip around his shoulder tightened, when she suddenly felt the need tolay her head onto his chest. Of cause, she didn't! Instead, she closed her eyesand enjoyed him rubbing against her with every single slow move.
"We have to talk!" She only just heard himwhisper, nevertheless the magic of the moment was broken.
"My office! Tonight!" Startled, Mia shookher head and pushed him slightly away.
"Please!" Again, she shook her head, thistime more rigorous. No sooner a stern looking McGonagall approach the dancing couple.
"Please!" Snape insisted right before thehead of Gryffindor house had reached them.
"Come now, Miss Anderson! Allow me to relieve youfrom your burden!" Enforcedly the potions master had to let his student goand found her instead replaced by his colleague. While he finished the dancewith a rather angry moving deputy headmistress, Mia vanished into her commonroom.
Half an hour later she had changed back into herordinary black robes, and her hair was tied into a single braid. Mia sat nextto the fire, turning the damn wooden box over and over again in her hands. Thatone moment back in the Great Hall had been deeply frightening. After all thethings he had done to her, there still was that unexplainable attractionbetween them. Why?
Not only Mia was lost in her thoughts after that fatefuldance. To calm himself, he had decided to correct some of the homework he hadcollected right before the end of term. But Snape couldn't concentrate. 'Wechoose too early!' he heard Dumbledore say again. With crossing out an entirelywrong section about the use of Billywig stings he angrily wiped those wordsaway, too. That old fool! But on the other hand, had that old fool convinced Miaagainst all odds to let him touch her again! Snape shook his head. And histouch obviously had affected her!
Another wrong section caught his eye, and he crossedit out. Goyle was such an idiot! That stupid boy was so dumb, even Snape as hishead of house couldn't cut him a slack anymore. So, he marked that horriblehomework with a T and went on. The name Draco Malfoy could be read on the nextparchment. Automatically he grabbed his left lower arm and rubbed the spot theDark Mark was burned into. It seemed the thing he feared most, finally wasabout to happen after thirteen years of peace.
Snape closed his eyes and Lily; his Lily appeared. Herdeath was his fault. It was he, who had told the Dark Lord about the prophecy. It was he, who never had revealed the fellow Death Eater amongst the marauders! His decision to keep this secret rather than to involve Dumbledore proved fatalfor the love of his life, when Pettegrew's betrayal resulted into her beingmurdered by the Dark Lord. Guilt turned into anger and with a furious grunt he focussedagain on the sheet of parchment in front of him.
Malfoys boy had at least some potential! Afterfinishing evaluation, he gladly scribbled an E and went on to the next piece ofhomework. The miniscule writing and the associated name with it made him groan. It was none other than Hermione Granger's essay! Even he had to admit, thatthat girl was exceptionally good, still he hated her. Not only was she a partof the golden trio, her know-it-all attitude also was constantly annoying him. Thegolden trio and its leader Harry Potter! Snape groaned again. Potter! Hisfather's son, but also Lily's boy. Loathing and love inextricably linked in aliving contradiction. He had her bright-green, almond shaped eyes, but alsoJames' appearance and his behaviour.
The potions master stretched his neck and started allover, after realizing that he had read without paying attention to the words. Hemanaged to concentrate for two or three sentences, then his thoughts againglided away. Things could have been different! Back then he had lost control;had lashed out at the one and only friend he ever had had in the entire world;had smashed his hopes and dreams with a single word! There was no making up forit! Lily had never forgiven him! But what if she had? With her still by hisside, would his life eventually have turned around? Snape sighed and once morestarted the section he already had read twice by now. After that one night, history was about to repeat itself! He had lost control and had acted withoutthinking. Would Mia finally give him the opportunity to clean the mess he hadcaused, or will it be Lily all over again?
It was pointless! He had to evaluate Grangers damnlong homework another time. Snape pushed the pile of sheets away, crossed hisarms on the desk and laid his head onto them. No sooner he had closed his eyes,he once more danced with his student. Suddenly Mia changed into Lily in theirfifth year. She turned her back and left him behind to face the harsh truth, that he had lost her friendship forever. The portrait guarding the Gryffindor commonroom shrunk into the Dark Lord and the Dark Lord morphed into Karkaroff. TheDark Mark on his outstretched left forearm grinned evil and the skull startedto move. Then white hair grew exceptionally fast, when the Dark Mark becameDumbledore. He winked, arranging a dance with Mia.
Rapid knocking tore him back into reality. It was halfpast one! Who on earth – HER! With a flick of his wand, he unlocked the doorand indeed the Gryffindor entered. His hopes fell, when he saw what she held inher hand.
"It's inappropriate for a student to receive sucha gift from her professor!" she immediately went for him, skipping anyform of proper greeting.
"So?!" Snape answered roughly.
"We no longer refer to the classical meaning ofthat term, do we?" He looked at her.
"For what you've been through, you deserve it!"
"I don't want that bloody thing!" she hissedand slammed the wooden box with a loud clank onto his desk.
"Then do as you will with it! Give it to somebodyelse, throw it away, burn it! I don't care! But I won't take it back!"Snape insisted aggressively.
"You're such a cruel, twisted bugger! Keep awayfrom me!" she whispered with a faint quiver of rage.
"I will! If you swear to attend the NEWT inpotions next school year!" He responded business-like.
"What is that to you? Why do you even care?"She hissed between grinded teeth.
"Because you are so damn good you stupid girl! Andit is entirely my fault you wanna quit!" Snape growled and fixed her gaze.
"Be honest! It isn't potions you despise, it's ME!So, distinguish the subject from the teacher, like the adult you are!" Miaglared at him for a moment, then turned on her heel and stormed off. Followinga sudden impulse, he locked the door before she could reach it.
"Let me out!" she demanded with compelledcalmness.
"No! Not until we finally settle the issuesbetween us!" His dark eyes pierced hers.
"You won't give me another opportunity to talk toyou in private! So, I'll take what I can get!"
"Give it a bone! I don't wanna talk to you and Idon't wanna settle anything!" Mia scowled. She pulled out her wand andtried to unlock the door herself, but it disobeyed her spells just as fierce asthe wizard behind the desk refused to leave her alone. Therefore, she eventuallyhad to surrender.
"What do you want, then?" Her eyes werefuming, although she held her fire.
"That you relieve yourself from that built-upanger! Shout at me! Insult me! Speak your mind! Do what is necessary to dealwith it but stop repressing your wrath!" Snape folded his arms in front ofhis chest.
"If you're done with me, I will back off!" Miaviciously shook her head.
"Oh no! Never! I've learned the hard way what itmeans to speak my mind in front of you, and I have no desire to repeat thatlesson!" She copied him and now also folded her arms. For a long eternity theysized each other up with their eyes, until Snape finally gave in.
"As you wish!" He took his wand out.
"Thank you for the dance, by the way! You lookedstunning tonight!" The lock clicked and he turned his back to her, now staringinto the fireplace.
"DON'T thank me for THAT! The HEADMASTER forcedyou upon me!" she spat in disgust.
"I am well aware of that, Miss Anderson! Younever would have come near me again, if it wouldn't have been for his insistence! For a change, I just tried to be polite! But I see! Even for that it'sobviously too late!" Snape calmly remarked into the flames. When he closedhis eyes, his hand on the mantlepiece slightly shook. It was over! Any minutenow and he would hear the door; hear her leave. So, history indeed did repeatitself!
Yet, Mia didn't move. Frozen to the spot she stared athim. Had her helpless blow actually hit? He no doubt was bleeding! Suddenly shefelt sorry to see him wounded like that. In the next second however, her chestheaved with flaring anger. He surely just was acting to manipulate her into surrender!Oh, how she loathed that man!
"You were right that evening! I DO regret lettingyou touch me more than I EVER could have imagined! You are an ugly, heartless, vilemonster, Severus Snape, and I will never understand why I didn't run from you!"
"Cause sometimes the beasts are those we mostfeel attracted to!" he mumbled, still fixing his eyes on the burning logsin the fireplace. With a deep breath he cleared all visible feelings from hisface, until it was as hard and aloof as always. Only then he turned around.
"I deeply regret that night, too!" Mia'smouth fell open.
"That night? It was NEVER about that night!Sometimes, such things do happen, you despicable arse!" In wild rage theyoung woman glared at her professor.
"It's not the part where you FUCKED me, youshould feel guilty about!" she spat, then she finally lost it.
"Act like an adult! AS IF! YOU should have acted likeone! Instead, you PUNISHED me; HUMILIATED me; DESTROYED me! WHY?!" Mia shoutedat the top of her lungs. Snape didn't flinch but swallowed hard.
"I don't know!" He looked at her expressionless.
"I have asked myself the same thing over and overagain, when I found out, that you, even after I've tormented you for weeks, nevergave the truth away!" Suddenly a deep crease appeared between hiseyebrows, and he couldn't hold her gaze any longer.
"Maybe, I was just afraid! Maybe, I simply AM abastard after all!" Tears welled up in Mia's eyes unintentionally.
"No! Stop it!" She hissed, fighting heremotions back.
"Don't make me pity you!" But shenonetheless did! Again! Suddenly she somehow understood why he had done what hehad done; understood his fears; understood his hidden vulnerability!
"I still hate you!" she sobbed. Snape daredto close in on her.
"I know!" he murmured and gently drew herinto his arms.
"No! Let go of me!" She desperately tried tofree herself, but he unyieldingly forced his embrace upon her, until she gavein.
"And I still yearn for your touch!" she atlast admitted still crying.
"I know! I felt it, while we danced! And I canfeel it in that very moment!" Snape kissed her forehead, then returned tohis desk.
"Well, Miss Anderson!" He opened a drawerand took out a sealed roll of parchment.
"To erase the recent dent in your marks I giveyou an extra task to be handed in first thing next term! Feel free to use thepotions classroom anytime you wish! All necessary ingredients will be there! Iset up a password, so you don't need me to open the door!" He put the scrollon top of the wooden box and shoved it pointedly in her direction.
"How about elve wine?" Mia suggested andtook both Snape's Christmas gift and the parchment off his desk. No sooner thepotions master had nodded in agreement she left his office. For an eternity hestared at the long since closed door. Now it was up to her! Either she took hisoffer, and things indeed went back to normal or there was nothing more he coulddo. Alas, she had taken back the rose! So, perhaps for once he was lucky!Perhaps for once he had been able to undo one of his mistakes after all.
--***--
Moments before the first potions lesson of the newterm was about to start, Mia quietly approached her professor's desk. As he hadhoped, she indeed handed in a bottle filled with a translucent potion and ascroll.
"That'll do, Miss Anderson!" Snape snarled, for a split-second fixing her gaze. Then he put her work into his drawer andstood up. The next two hours went as usual. Seven sweaty students hung overtheir cauldrons and tried to concoct an Everlasting Elixir. When the potionsmaster finally evaluated Mia's finished product, his lips curled. Today, sheeven had exceeded his highest expectations. Of cause, he never would haveadmitted that in front of his entire course, but nevertheless Snape wrote downthe Outstanding she deserved.
