Quia Caesaris Sum 3
On the Headmaster's suggestion, we retired to my rooms to finish our conversation. I must remember to thank him for his helpful little suggestions one of these days. Once there, Dulac calmly helped herself to a glass of scotch from my drinks cabinet. She poured me one as well and brought the bottle with her, placing it on the table between us. I glared at her and opened my mouth to complain at her but she pre-empted me.
"Look, I know you didn't offer me a drink but I needed one and if we're going to sort this plan out without killing one another, I think you need one too. I will buy you another bottle if it offends you that much."
"I'll hold you to that," I muttered. "Albus seems to think that if he leaves us alone to talk, we'll sort out all our differences and become bosom friends."
"Yes, well, sometimes I wonder if he lives in the same world as us," she commented. I couldn't argue with that, I frequently wonder the same thing myself. "I didn't get a chance to discuss this with Albus, but before he goes into hiding Lucius is going to leave instructions for divorce proceedings with his solicitor. He thinks it will stop the Death Eaters from going after Narcissa. Personally I think it'll just piss the woman off. Lucius seems totally unable to grasp the concept that she's a manipulative little bitch who will do anything to hold on to her position and money. Anyway, my point was that he made her sign a pre-nuptial agreement guaranteeing that he gets custody of any male children. He's not going to be able to exercise that custody if he's in hiding and I'm worried about what would happen to Draco if Narcissa gets sole custody."
"Yes, well, Lucius likes to surround himself with women like that," I snarled. "I don't see why you're concerned about Draco at all, but I can assure you I have no intention of letting Voldemort or anyone else hurt him."
"I'm going to get Lucius to draw up an agreement giving us joint custody of Draco until such time as Lucius can take it over gain. As Albus insists that I stay with Lucius, that will mean you're responsible for him," She paused and stared at me assessingly for a moment and then her eyes went cold and dead and I felt a shiver running down my back. I had to force myself to remain motionless under that arrogant gaze. I had to remember that, Slytherin or not, the woman was nothing more than an exclusive variety of call girl; she couldn't touch me. "I believe that you would protect Draco for Lucius' sake and I don't care whether you understand my motives or not, but Draco is as dear to me as if he was my own child and if anything happens to him while you're in charge of him then you'd better run back to the Death Eaters because I assure you Voldemort at his worst has nothing on what I will do to you!" I repeated to myself that she was nothing, she couldn't possibly touch me, but she certainly seemed to believe she could. That was when the rest of what she had said suddenly struck me.
"What do you mean 'for Lucius' sake'?" I asked carefully, as if I was walking on very thin ice and the tiniest misstep would cause me to fall.
She stood up and started to pace, taking another sip of her drink before speaking. "You didn't really think I was ignorant of the relationship that the two of you had, did you? Even if Lucius hadn't told me I'd have had to be a complete fool not to work it out. You were practically joined at the hip. Not to mention the number of times I could smell your aftershave on him." She laughed, a brittle, sharp laugh that lacked any humour. "You know, you and Narcissa have something in common - you both see me as a threat when in truth the only person responsible for ruining your relationships with Lucius is you. Narcissa fucked up by being herself - only with Lucius for what he can do for her, completely incapable of caring for either her husband or her son - and you waited too long. If you'd realised what Voldemort was earlier, if you'd tried to convince Lucius to leave before he had a child to think of, you might actually have succeeded."
How dare she judge me? This little tramp was in my rooms, presuming to pass judgement on things she knew nothing about. She had obviously fallen into the trap of seeing me as a bitter potions professor and nothing more. I stood up, my robes billowing about me dramatically, and strode over to her until I was close enough that she had to tilt her head back to look me in the face. "You know nothing, little girl," I sneered. "You're no better than Narcissa. Where would you be without Lucius' power and influence? The only difference between the two of you is she managed to hook him and you never did." I loomed over her, threatening her with my presence as well as my words. She is nothing and she'd better learn that before she gets hurt. She smiled a sort of half-smile and stepped back slightly, it should have been a defensive gesture but somehow she made it seem derisory.
"Do you really think you're the first arrogant overbearing man to threaten me?" she asked. "Unlike you, I don't need to run to a more powerful wizard for protection, I can look after myself." Before I even noticed her draw her wand, she had waved it and I was sitting on the floor at her feet with my back against an armchair. She put her hands on the arms of the chair, either side of my head, and leant closer. "You get one free shot, Snape," she warned. "Don't ever threaten me again." Standing up, she turned her back on me and walked away. I was absolutely furious that she was implying that I was too insignificant for her even to need to keep an eye. I drew my wand and hurled a painful little curse of my own devising at her. She sidestepped at the last moment and it hit the mirror on the far wall; clearly she had been watching me after all. The curse rebounded and came hurtling back at me requiring me to cast a counter curse to neutralize it. Before I could do anything else she had sent a curse of her own towards me, I ducked, ignoring the sounds of breaking glass that came from whatever it had hit. I threw a couple more minor curses at her as I manoeuvred into a better position, watching as she deflected them without even breaking a sweat. We carried on trading curses for a few more moments before I got to where I wanted to be. Throwing a curse directly at her to distract her, I threw another one off to my side, aiming for another mirror and hoping that she wouldn't spot it until it was too late. She saw it at the last moment and tried to dodge but it struck her a glancing blow, throwing her into a wall. Unfortunately she was now in a position to hit me while being partially shielded from any curse I might throw by several large items of furniture. She lay there with her wand pointed right at me for a second and then started to laugh. This time the laughter wasn't the fake, harsh laughter I had heard earlier, but an honest-to-goodness expression of delight.
"Damn, I knew there was a reason I liked you. You're as sneaky as I am," she exclaimed.
"Excuse me?" I said, she couldn't possible have said what I thought she did.
"I said I like you, now help me up, Severus," she repeated, holding out her hand.
Bemused, I went over to her and grabbed her hand in mine, pulling her to her feet. She grabbed her drink from the mantelpiece where she had put it when I tried to threaten her. Taking a hefty gulp, she wandered over to the window. Yes, I have windows, why does that always surprise everyone? Just because my rooms are in the dungeons, people assume they must be dark and dingy. Honestly, have you even seen this place? It's built on a cliff overlooking a lake; you could be ten floors below the main entrance and still have windows if you were on the right side of the castle. Anyway as s sas saying, she walked over to the window and leant against the wall. I don't know what she was looking at because even with the lights from the castle it was too dark to really see anything.
"Do you know how my parents died?" she asked.
I was surprised by the sudden change of topic but I'd learnt from my earlier mistakes. She was probably leading up to something and I wanted to know what. I thought for a moment, recalling the gossip that had surrounded her when we were at school. "They were killed by Aurors, everyone knows that," I answered.
"Honestly, Severus, I thought you knew better than to believe anything that 'everyone knows'!" she scoffed. "They were killed by Voldemort actually. My parents were part of the original Order of the Phoenix. When Voldemort found out that they had been spying on him, he had them executed. The next day I walked into Albus' office and offered to continue their work. I was 15."
I was stunned. I knew I wasn't Albus' only spy but I had always assumed that the others were people like me, who had regretted their decision to join Voldemort and been forced into becoming double agents to avoid Azkaban or out of a sense of guilt. She was still speaking so I remained silent.
"I made a bargain with Lucius. I told him that I could help him. He got a girl on his arm who wasn't interested in becoming the mistress of Malfoy manor; a convenient cover for his relationship with you; and an extra pair of eyes and ears to protect him from all the political backstabbing which was rampant in our House. In return, as far as he was concerned, I got a lover whose name was powerful enough to protect me if my parents' real allegiances ever became common knowledge."
She turned around to face me and pushed away from the wall, draining the last of her drink as she did so. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go and shatter several of Lucius' illusions." She opened the jar of Floo Powder and grabbed a handful. Replacing the jar, she stood for a moment staring at the blue powder in her hand. "We're lucky that the Ministry never wondered why two spies, both so close to Lucius, failed to come up with a single scrap of evidence against him." She threw the powder into the fire and softly stated her destination. As she stepped into the flames she said, "I'm really not a threat to you, Severus." Then she vanished.
