A/N: Hey, I just wanted to post a quick
apology for my take on Hagrid’s accent. I’m horrible with accents. I’m going to probably go through it again if
I have a chance this weekend and clean it up.
I just didn’t have the time to look up some references at the moment
because I really wanted to get a chapter out to you guys. TTFN!

Chapter 27: Close Calls
February 14th
“Don’t you just love Valentine’s Day, Nox” Harry asked the animagus
curled about his shoulders. Nox simply glared at him with his beady, black eyes. “Oh, come on now. Cheer up or I’ll be forced to charm you pink
in an effort to get you into the spirit of things.”
“That wouldn’t work,” called a wonderful voice
from behind him.
Harry turned to smile at
Draco. “I know, but its still fun to
threaten him. Are you ready to go to Hogsmeade?”
Draco’s smile faltered. “I’m sorry, Harry. Professor McGonagall cancelled the trip. Something’s happened.”
“What,” Harry asked. Something was always going wrong at moments
when everyone was supposed to be happy.
“Several students have suddenly disappeared.”
Harry frowned. “Do we have any idea if they’re okay? Have their families been notified?”
Draco held up a hand. “I’m certain that they’re all fine. All the students that are missing were either
confirmed or suspected Death Eaters.
Voldemort is beginning to gather his troops.”
Harry closed his eyes and
sighed. “Are we having a meeting?”
Draco shook his head. “McGonagall is just sending out alerts to all
the Order members. He’s probably going
to need some time to train the new recruits.”
“How much time do you think we have,” Harry
asked sadly. He knew that this was going
to come eventually; he’d just hoped that they’d be better prepared. They hadn’t even taken care of all the Horcruxes yet!
“A few months at best,” Draco said
softly. “At worst…a
few weeks. Don’t worry about that
right now though. I’ve got a surprise
for you.”
Harry looked at Draco
suspiciously. “What have you been up
to?”
Draco chuckled. “Just come along and see. Sirius, Blaise, Weasley and I thought that
our dates still deserved a nice Valentine’s Day, even if we can’t leave the
school.”
Harry rolled his eyes and
obediently followed his love. It didn’t
take long to realize that he was being taken to the Room of Requirement. When Draco opened the door Harry’s breath
caught. It was beyond beautiful. It was amazing.
Four cozy café tables were positioned
about the room at discreet distances from one another. The far wall had been turned into a waterfall
that was sending a light mist into the air.
Weeping Willows were set all about the room and decorated with fairy
lights. The floor had turned to vibrant
green grass that looked soft and inviting.
Someone else might not have thought much of the scene, but to Harry it
was perfect, peaceful, and serene.
“It’s wonderful, Draco,” Harry said softly.
Harry loved the smile that Draco
gave him then. They moved over to the
one free table (Hermione and Ron, Ginny and Blaise, Sirius and Eris were all
present already) and Dobby immediately appeared to take their dinner order. Harry set Nox on to
the ground and was surprised when the animagus stayed
curled up at his feet. He glanced at
Sirius and Eris then and saw how comfortable they looked, holding hands and
sitting side-by-side instead of across from each other. Every now and then they shared a chaste
kiss. He could see why Severus would
want to refrain from interfering.
“I see you’ve noticed how content they seem,”
Draco said quietly.
“Yeah, I guess you were right about waiting.
Harry looked back at Draco and
stretched his hand across the table. He
smiled when Draco took it and gave it a slight squeeze. “Thank you for this.”
“Anything for you, Harry,” Draco said.
Harry briefly wondered how his
life had taken such a turn. How was he
here, now, with Draco Malfoy holding his hand?
He gave himself a mental shake.
He wouldn’t consider such things.
Why question something so good?
“I love you, Draco.”
Draco’s smile was blinding. “I love you too, Harry.”

February 21st
“Have I told you how wonderful your surprise
was,” Eris asked sweetly as she carded her fingers through Sirius’ hair.
Sirius smiled up at her from where
his head rested on her lap. “Only a
hundred times a day in the last week.
Remind me to do things like that for you more often.”
Eris gave his arm a playful
slap. “Silly wizard, I’d love you any
way.”
She watched as
Sirius’ eyes clouded with restrained lust and love. “Would you?”
“Always,” Eris said softly. She laughed nervously. “Despite my better judgment I might add.”
Sirius sat up and looked at
her. “I love you too, you know.”
Eris shook her head. “You do tell me that on a regular basis.”
Sirius smirked. “Almost as often as you thank me for every
tiny thing I do for you.”
“I just want you to know how much I appreciate
you, even if I can’t quite show you yet,” Eris said sadly.
“None of that now,” Sirius said gently. “I told you that I’ll take whatever you can
give.”
Eris leaned in close to him then,
feeling drawn to his warmth. She kissed
him gently at first and then it grew needy.
She wanted this, him, so badly.
It would be so easy just to give in and let fate have its way. She felt her magic stir then and his magic
leap out in response. Soon she was
sitting in Sirius’ lap, kissing him passionately. His hands were traveling along her sides,
starting on her ribcage and moving down and along her thighs. It was so close. She could feel her magic twining with the
very fiber of Sirius’ being and his returning the favor.
The
process was very nearly complete when she suddenly felt Sirius’ hands slip
under her shirt. It was that
skin-on-skin contact that shocked her back into reality. She quietly reined her magic back in and
pulled away. The desperate look in
Sirius’ eyes nearly made her heart break.
What the hell was she doing to him?
How could she be so selfish?
“This was a mistake,” Eris said softly,
pulling away from the man she loved and standing up. “It was wrong of me to try and offer you some
halfway compromise. I can’t do this
anymore, Sirius.”
A strange fire lit up
in Sirius’ eyes then. It frightened
her. “I won’t let you break away from me
again, Eris. I can deal with waiting to
bond…”
“No you can’t,” Eris cried. “It’s hurting you! I can’t keep doing this to you.”
“Then bond with me,” Sirius said
pleadingly. “Give in to it. I know its what you
really want.”
The
portrait hole door popped open then and a grinning Blaise and beaming Ginny
walked in. Ginny ran over and Eris found
herself with an arm full of redhead.
“We’re engaged!”
Eris just stared for a
moment. “Ginny…that’s so…that’s
great! Omygosh! I’m so happy for you.”
She
couldn’t even bear to look at Sirius as he congratulated Blaise. Ginny gained her attention again. “We’re planning to have the wedding the
summer after I graduate. You’ll be one
of my bridesmaids, right?”
Eris’ heart clenched. She had no right to say yes, knowing that she
wouldn’t be around that long. There was
very little chance. Still she managed to
lie. She’d been doing that a lot
lately. “Of course I will, Gin.”
Hermione, Ron, Draco, and Harry
burst into the room then. Apparently
they’d heard the news first and gone to get a few things to through an
impromptu party. Eris stayed for a time,
but quickly found a way to slip off to her dorm. She couldn’t watch Ginny and not be envious,
but more importantly, she couldn’t stand the look of disappointment and longing
on Sirius’ face.

Draco watched with a frown as Eris
left the party. He glanced down at
Harry’s lap, where Severus sat curled in his animagus
form, and then at Sirius, who looked quite despondent. He gave Harry a nudge and leaned close to his
lover’s ear. “I think you were right,
Harry. She’s pulling away from him
again. I don’t think we have a choice
any longer.”
He heard Harry sigh sadly. “After Valentine’s Day I was sure that you
were right.”
Draco shook his head sadly. “I should have known that I couldn’t be
right. She’s been putting up a front for
Naiya since they started talking again. I saw that mask she’s been using all the time
in Slytherin House. She’s hiding
something from the elf, trying to give her a false sense of security.”
“We should talk to Sirius then,” Harry said
nervously. It made Draco feel immensely
better that his mate wasn’t taking their soon to be betrayal of Eris
lightly. Draco had a feeling that there
would be hell to pay eventually.
Draco nodded and picked Severus up. “Collect you godfather and come into Eris’
little ante room.”
A few minutes later the two young
wizards were facing down their godfathers.
Draco knew that this was mostly his fault and decided he’d take the fall
first. “We have something very important
to tell you about Eris.”
Harry took his hand. “It’s about her…mate situation.”
Severus looked highly
disgruntled. “Has she found another
potential?”
Draco swallowed hard. “There won’t be any more potentials…ever. Sirius is…well he’s…”
“He’s Eris’ predestined mate,” Harry said in a
rush.
Both the older wizards were silent
for a long time. Sirius looked relieved
and confused, but Severus looked furious.
“Why hasn’t she simply got on with it then?”
“We don’t know,” Harry said lamely. “She just seems convinced that she’s going to
die and she doesn’t want to leave Sirius with the pain he’ll feel when she
passes on.”
Severus pinched the bridge of his
nose and Draco wondered what the old man was thinking Severus was a hard man to read on the
best of days. “Both of you go along and
enjoy the party. Black and I have things to discuss.”
Draco nodded and pulled Harry out
of the room with him. “Come on. We did the right thing.”
Draco kept saying that quietly to
himself, over and over again. So why did
he feel so badly about whatever was going to happen next?
