Godfathers for Harry
James strolled slowly down the silent and dark hallway. ‘I must be astral projecting without meaning to,’ he thought to himself as he continued to roam around. ‘I really need to stop doing that.’ But then something strange caught his attention. As he entered his bedroom the bed was empty. He and Lily were not curled up together fast asleep.
He searched the room for any other sign of what was going on and noticed the leaves on the trees outside had turned a vivid shade of orange. It wasn’t autumn yet…
He blinked and was suddenly standing in the nursery. Lily was frantically boarding up the door. Harry lay in his crib blissfully unaware of his mother’s fear. Things were starting to become clearer for James now.
Suddenly there was a loud crack as James watched his own body come crashing through the nursery door and land on the floor a few feet away from Lily’s feet with a sickening thud. He inched a little closer to examine himself. Blood was pouring from his nose, mouth, and several deep looking gashes and stab wounds. The thick liquid immediately started pooling on the carpeted floor.
Just then a dark cloaked figure appeared in the doorway. “Did you really think you were going to stop me?” said a voice James instantly recognized as belonging to Voldemort.
James noticed as the dark wizard swooned and gripped the door frame tightly for support. It seemed that he had been weakened quite a bit by the fight that James’ other self had put up. “Give me the boy and I will let you live.”
“No! Take me instead,” Lily pleaded, putting herself between the intruder and her son. “He’s only a baby!”
James watched on in helpless horror as Voldemort raised his wand. “Avada Kedavra!”
The room was filled with blinding green light. James eyes opened and he bolted up into a seated position. His heart was thundering in his chest and his skin was damp with sweat. His hand reached over to lightly touch Lily’s sleeping form.
He took a few deep breaths to calm himself. Then he curled close to Lily and tried to push the whole thing from his mind and go back to sleep. There was no sense in worrying about it until he had to.

Lily woke shortly after dawn to the sound of her crying son. She rolled over and smiled softly at her still sleeping husband. Sometime during the night he had rolled over toward her and grabbed her; wrapping himself around her. She untangled herself and tried to get him to roll back over to his side without waking him. It was then that she noticed his side of the bed was damp. “I guess he had a nightmare again,” she sighed. She pulled on a dressing gown and went to go get Harry.

The Potters arrived at the Burrow shortly after noon. It was the day before Bill was going off to school, and they were having sort of a sending off party. Lily handed Harry to her husband and went to try and help a very flustered Molly.
“So how do you like being a father?” Arthur asked with a good natured smile.
“It’s different,” he answered. “Umm… could I talk to you and Sirius in private?”
“Of course James,” Arthur nodded.
“Remus, could you watch Harry for a moment?”
“Yea, sure,” Remus answered, slightly hurt that he wasn’t being included in whatever James wanted to talk about.
James handed Harry over to his friend and Arthur led the other two wizards away from the crowd. “So James, what did you want to talk to us about?” Arthur asked when they were out of hearing range of everyone else.
“Well, it’s about Harry,” James started, looking a bit uncomfortable with the subject.
“Are you having some kind of trouble?” Sirius asked looking concerned.
“No, nothing like that,” James shook his head. “But he does need a godfather.”
“Oh, is that all,” Arthur grinned. “So why did you want to talk to both of us?”
“Because Lily and I were talking the other night…. Sirius, you’ve been my best friend since our first year at school, and we would like you to be Harry’s godfather.”
“I would be honored,” Sirius answered, his face beaming.
James turned to Arthur who was looking a little confused. “And given the current circumstances, we were hoping that you would be a second godfather to him. You know, in case, Gods forbid, something were to happen to Lily, myself, and Sirius. We want to make sure that no matter what Harry has someone to take care of him.”
Arthur stood there speechless looking like he was about to cry. Then suddenly he launched himself at James hugging him tight. “I would be honored too.”
Once Arthur let go, James pulled two golden keys out of his pocket. “When Harry was born we set up sort of a trust fund for him. There is enough in it to take care of him until he is seventeen.” He held out the keys to the two men. “And we want each of you to have a key. That way you can get to it if need be.”
Each of them reluctantly took a key. “Let’s just hope that we never have to use it,” Sirius said as he patted James on the shoulder. “We want to keep both you and Lily around for a long time.”
James quickly averted his friend’s gaze and bit his lip hard. Part of him wanted to tell his friends about his dream; but the other part didn’t want them to worry.
It was then that Molly and Lily emerged from the kitchen with large bowls of delicious looking food floating behind them. “Let’s go eat,” James grinned softly as he wrapped his arm around Sirius’ shoulder.

After the party was over and the sun had set James and Sirius sat together on a blanket in the backyard gazing up at the stars. “You know something don’t you?” Sirius randomly blurted out.
James jumped a little and tried to hide his nervousness. “Well yes, I know lots of things. For instance, did you know that oysters can change their gender at will?”
Sirius grabbed his friends chin and stared him directly in the eye. “Don’t play games with me James,” he sounded a bit angry. “You’ve been acting funny all day. No one else has noticed, but I have. Tell me what’s going on.”
James sighed sadly and rubbed his chin. “I had a dream last night. And in it… Well, Lily and I died.”
Sirius sat stunned. “It was probably just something you were worried about. Not all of your dreams like that are premonitions.”
“Yeah, probably,” James nodded. “It’s just me being overly paranoid.”
They sat together in silence, both knowing that what James saw really was a premonition. “Does Lily know?”
James shook his head. “No, she has enough to worry about already.”
“You should tell her,” Sirius urged. “Are you going to try to prevent it?”
“Of course!” James yelled, getting a little emotional. “Dying young was not something I ever dreamed of doing; though it certainly doesn’t come as a surprise.”
“Don’t leave me,” Sirius whimpered as a few hot tears fell down his cheeks. He reached over to hug James tight and bury his face in his chest. James hugged him back, laying there with him in heavy silence until they both drifted off to sleep.
