CH 30 A brief summons
“Why are you not sitting down?” Severus asked smoothly.
“You know why, I can’t.” She told him.
“Suit yourself, but if you intend to stand at the table, at least stop fidgeting. I find it most annoying.”
Lou did her best to keep as still as possible while eating her lunch, but her leg ached impossibly and she couldn’t help shuffling occasionally from one foot to the other.
“For goodness sake girl what is wrong with you.” He ask in a very irritated tone.
“I can’t help it, you’ve made sure I can’t sit down and my leg hurts with standing all morning.” She told him, her voice rising with the injustice of it all.
When she saw him stand and make his way towards her, she took fright and dashed to the door.
“I’m sorry, I’ll keep still, I promise. I didn’t mean to shout.” The door wouldn’t open and she stood with her back to it, staring at him.
“Stupid girl, I want to look at your leg, nothing more.” He scowled at her.
“Oh. I …I thought …”
“You thought wrong, now sit down, do you not use the suave any more?”
Lou sat on the armchair nearest her, it was heavily upholstered but she still winced at the pain. “I haven’t got any left. I ran out a while ago and you were gone so I …well I didn’t …” She trailed off, ashamed to admit that she never thought to ask someone else if they could get her some more.
“I see.” He squatted down in front of her and lifted the front of her robe. “Merlin, how long has it been like this?”
“About a week.” She answered quietly.
“And you never thought to mention it to anyone? It is infected for goodness sake. How did this come about?”
“I got a letter, I thought it was from you, to say you were coming back. I jumped up from the table and banged my leg, it must have split or something. I didn’t realise right away, I thought I’d just bruised it, I suppose I was so used to it aching that I never gave it much thought. Then it got icky.”
“Stupid girl.” He muttered under his breath. “This should be completely healed by now. Show me your backside.”
“What? No.” She gripped the chair, determined not to move now.
“Don’t be any more foolish than you already have been.” He growled, taking her by the arm and pulling her from the chair. He sat on the chair and placed her over his knee, just as he did that morning and Lou immediately burst into tears.
He ignored her and lifted her robes. Lowering her pants, he saw she was quite badly bruised and regretted being so brutal with her. He’d been so angry and determined that she hate him, that he’d not restrained himself when administering the blows.
He straightened her clothes and stood her up. Severus offered no apology for his actions.
“I shall supply you with the potions and suave necessary for your leg, it will need to be dressed again once the infection has been removed. I shall also provide a potion for your other …bruising. Stay here, I will not be long.”
Lou stood red faced and staring at the floor as she waited for the Professor to return. He didn’t take long and first gave her the potion that would rid her bottom of the painful bruises.
Lou was grateful because it meant she could sit down. “Thank you Professor.”
His eyes flicked to her face briefly but he did not reply. A snap of his fingers and Cassia appeared.
“Take miss Black to her room, I shall follow shortly. I do not want her to walk, she is not to use her right leg at any time.”
“Yes Sir, Cassia will see to it.”
The next thing Lou knew, she was floated out of the chair and Cassia took her upstairs to her room. She held her hands over her face all the way. She was quite capable of walking, even if her leg did hurt. This was just downright embarrassing but Lou daren’t complain. Who knows what other humiliations Severus Snape had hidden up his sleeves.
He followed behind, her thoughts drifting to his mind. The thoughts were patchy because they weren’t intense, but he caught the gist of them and found them quite amusing. ’So she thought he lived to torment her? Well that should help to keep her out of mischief.’
Cassia laid Lou on the bed and removed her shoes for her.
“Thanks Cassia, but really, I can manage quite well by myself. Just because he says I can’t walk, doesn’t mean I wont you know. And I can take my own shoes off, all I need is a bit of potion and I‘ll be fine.”
“I shall be the judge of that miss Black.”
She gasped. “I didn’t know you were there.”
“Clearly, and for your information, Cassia obeys me, not you.
He stepped up to the side of the bed, lifted her robe and ran a diagnostic spell over her leg.
“I need to re-open the wound to clear the infection, it goes deeper that I had initially realised. You shall not use that leg until I say so, even if it means putting sticking charms on your bed and the schoolroom chairs.”
“But that not fair, you can’t do that.”
“Oh but I can, so do not tempt me.” “Cassia, her robe.”
Lou clutched tightly to her robe, but Cassia snapped her fingers and the robe was neatly folded on the bottom of the bed.
She clenched her teeth, trying hard not to vent her frustration for fear of reprisals. ’I really hate this man. I really do.’ She told herself. She didn’t though, she was just angry and frustrated. Lou was still hurting too from his rejection, she just wasn’t willing to admit it at the moment.
“I suggest you take this, it will hurt terribly when I re-open this wound.”
“What is it? Why do you have to open it? Cant you just pour some of that stuff in like you did last time?”
“One; it, is sleeping potion. Two; I need to open the wound because I do not know how far the infection has spread. Three; whatever I do, you will feel pain, a great deal of it, if you do not take that potion before I start. Four; for the rest of your stay here, Cassia will be your legs. Whether you wish to use the bathroom, come down to eat or merely go to the classroom, Cassia will take you. I do not want that leg used at all.”
He sat on the bed beside her. “If your leg does not heal properly this time, you may end up losing it, I do not wish for that to happen any more than you do. Now, drink the potion.”
Lou didn’t argue, she drained the bottle, terrified now of losing her leg. He last thoughts were of having a wooden leg like Mr moody before she woke to the most excruciating pain.
“OOWWWW.” She cried out, startling Severus, who was half asleep in the armchair next to the fireplace.
“Shh.” He told her, his voice gentle. “Drink this, it will take away the pain for a while.”
She felt someone lift her gently and place something at her lips. She drank obediently and fell back into blissful sleep.
“I had no choice Headmaster, I even had to threaten to bind her to the bed so she would not try to put weight on it when she eventually wakes. The infection was deep and there is ligament damage. There is so much scar tissue now, I am limited with the amount of healing I can give her. Even St Mungo’s would be hard put to make any improvement on what I have already done. Had she told someone sooner that her leg was bothering her, it would have been much easier to deal with. Now all I can do is to keep giving her healing, pain and sleeping potions, while keeping it clean and changing the dressing at regular intervals.”
“It is a great shame Severus. And her magic, I take it that it would not be wise to release any more while she is in this condition.”
“On the contrary, she is heavily sedated, now would be an ideal time.”
“Oh that is good news. Shall we?”
Severus led Albus upstairs to Lou’s bedroom. “What a pretty room, I dare say she was delighted when you showed her it.”
“Hardly Headmaster. I believe she had other things on her mind at that time. Would you care to begin, she has not long since taken a large dose of combined potions and will be out for several hours.”
Albus stepped up to the bed, aimed his wand at Lou’s collar and released more of her magic, a little at a time. “I must confess, I am unsure as to how much it would be safe to give her at one time Severus.”
“I shall be keeping her sedated for several days, a total of one third maximum should be safe. It is not a dreamless sleep I have given her, so her mind should subconsciously fight to control the power within. If not, I shall contact you, and you can return. Providing she has not inadvertently killed me in the meantime.” He added drolly.
Albus performed the spell and they watched as she glowed lightly and crackled, but that was as far as it went before settling down.
“Well I must admit, that went a lot better than I expected. Perhaps we should put her to sleep for each increase, it is certainly safer for us.” The old wizard chuckled.
“I would also like your permission to invoke an ancient spell. It will allow her to get her education while still asleep. She is very bright Headmaster, highly intelligent as you know, but as things stand, she will not be able to enter her fifth year unless she has a full background knowledge of first through fourth year magical education. Once she has the knowledge in her brain, the practical side should come easily to her. She has already shown an aptitude for picking up most things on the first or second try. Lupin said she managed a full Patronus on her second attempt.”
“Yes he did mention it, though he was somewhat disturbed as to the form it took, you I believe.”
“So I was told. It is the first time I have heard of a Patronus being a person.”
“Same here. This spell you speak of Severus, I take it you have reservations for it’s use.”
“Not at all. It is an old family spell, Italian in it’s roots, but it is considered dark magic, that is why I need your permission.”
“You have it. I have not heard of such a spell.”
“It has been a closely guarded secret in our family for many generations, I do not believe it has been used since my nine great grandfathers time. And no, I am afraid I shall not be performing it in your presence. As I said, closely guarded.”
“Very well Severus, but you cannot blame me for being curious. Still, you have my permission now, and I trust you implicitly. Are you still trying to keep her at arms length?”
“I am, though it is proving extremely difficult.”
“Might I suggest you stop trying. As you say, Voldemort will discover her existence, it is better she begins to trust you again.”
“For Merlin’s sake, don’t you think she’s confused enough as it is? I know I am. If I do win back her trust, and it is a big if, do not come back at a later date and ask me to betray that trust again, because I shall refuse. You know what it took for her to trust me in the first place, Circe only knows what it would do to her should I let her down again. I cannot, will not do that to her. She has suffered enough.”
“I understand Severus. Do your best, she needs you now more than she realises, just as you will need her when Voldemort becomes aware of her.”
Albus stayed through dinner, they discussed the idea of Severus offering the information of Lou’s existence to Voldemort before he discovered it from another source, hence putting Severus into the Dark Lords good books once again. Since he was going to find out anyway, why not from a Deatheater he currently had doubts over.
Severus was still not happy about the idea, even though he could see the merits in Albus’ theory. He agreed to consider it, knowing that he would probably have to see it through anyway.
The following afternoon, Severus entered Lou’s bedroom, changed her dressing and administered more potion.
He left Cassia to clear up and returned a short while later with a small tome. It had a plain black cover and no title. He sat in the armchair for a good ten minutes, reading the same page before making his way over to the bed.
It was a simple enough spell, but was banned and classified as dark magic by the Ministry in it’s early years because they deemed it unfair that a person be educated without working to achieve that education.
Although Severus could understand the Ministries ethics as regards the spell, it was a little known fact that all the generations of Prince’s had the spell invoked on them at an early age anyway, including Severus. His mother had invoked the spell on him at regular intervals when his father was absent on his drinking binges. At five years of age, Severus could have sat and passed NEWTS in most subjects, Dark Arts too if they were available. It was the first time he had ever invoked the spell though, and the first time since the spells creation that it was to be used on anyone other than a Prince.
Taking his wand, he laid the tip against her left temple.
“Istruire durante dormire” (instruct during sleep)
“Charms, level one through four plus five.
Transfiguration, level one through four plus five.
Defence against the Dark Arts, level one through seven advanced.
The Dark Arts, Level on through seven advanced.
Ancient Runes, level one through four plus five.
Arithmancy, level one through …seven advanced.
Herbology, level one through four plus five.
Care of Magical Creatures, level one through five, plus six.
History of Magic, level one through seven advanced.
Potions, level one through …seven advanced.”
He replaced the wand in his pocket, then left the room to replace the book in his library.
Normally, a child sleeping for eight hours would be able to absorb one subject at a time. Lou was absorbing nine subjects over a period of seventy two-hours.
It has been known for a sick or injured child in the family to be given two, or even three subjects at once if they were to be unconscious for a lengthy amount of time. This was the first time anyone had been given more than three, it was also the first time anyone other than a member of the Prince family was given the benefit of this kind of education.
Four subjects were instilled for years one to four, the plus being the rudimentary knowledge she would have acquired had she been given homework for the summer in readiness for her fifth year.
Magical creatures, he’d given her an extra year on that one because he did not want her too close to any of the more dangerous specimens that Hagrid seem to find each year.
History, she would most likely fall asleep during that one, just as everyone else did.
Dark Arts and Defence, he’d given her the full works on those, she would most likely need them when the Dark Lord got wind of her, and considering her mathematical genius, she deserved more than a head start on Arithmancy.
Potions, his own beloved subject. She’d already shown a high standard of practicality when it came to preparation and brewing, he would most likely be in need of her services himself before long, that was why he decided to give her the full seven year advanced education now.
She was also doing well in transfiguration and charms, but if she was too advanced in every subject, questions would arise and it would look too suspicious.
Through constant rest and Severus’ regular attention, Lou’s leg was finally healing well. She’d been under the sleeping potion for four days, instead of the planned three, mainly because he wanted to be certain that all the subjects were absorbed fully and that she was pain free when she woke.
He’d been summoned once, on her second night of potion induced sleep.
Severus had given the Dark Lord the news that a child born of Orvokki Nilsen was alive and well, but did not mention that her father was Sirius Black. He would save that for another summons. He also informed the Dark Lord that she’d claimed her inheritance and was now a ward of Albus Dumbledore.
Albus had claimed responsibility of her through Arthur Weasley and Rudolph Ervast, thus preventing any unsavoury claimants from getting their hands on her. She would remain Albus’ ward until her seventeenth birthday.
Severus returned home unscathed that night. The Dark Lord was excited by the news and wanted Severus to find out more about the girl, hopefully gain some influence over her and bring her over to their side. He also told Severus that unless the Potions Master had some specific news to impart, he would not be calling on him for several months, to give him time to gain the girls confidence and win her over to the side of darkness.
Once again, Lou had unwittingly saved his life, but Severus was dissatisfied at how it had been secured.
On the fifth morning of Lou’s enforced sleep, Severus gave her the usual dose of potions, minus the sleeping draught. Instead he gave her a pepper-up potion and Cassia brought her a tray of breakfast.
Once she got over the initial wooziness that accompanies any forced sleep, particularly potion induced, she began to eat. Slowly at first, she felt a bit sick, but once she was halfway through it, her appetite seemed to take over and she managed a full English breakfast plus a stack of toast and a bowl of cereal.
Desperate for the toilet, Lou instinctively made to get out of bed, but Cassia was one step ahead of her and she found herself floating to the bathroom.
“Cassia, I’m fine please, my leg hardly hurts at all. Whatever that potion was I took last night has worked, let me walk.”
“You is asleep for four days and nights, you still isn’t walking until master says so.”
“Four days?” She asked incredulously. “I’ve been asleep for four days?”
“Yes miss. The master is making sure you is out of pain before he is waking you. You can be dressed today and go down to the library. The master will see you in there, he wishes to discuss things with you.”
“What things Cassia?” She asked the elf who was now lowering her into the bath.
“Cassia not knowing, master says bring you down, has things to discuss.”
Lou took the opportunity to look at her leg. It certainly looked better, it felt better too, just tight and a bit out of control, as if only half of it belonged to her.
She wondered what Severus wanted to talk to her about. Lou hoped she wasn’t in for another dressing down, she couldn’t bear it if she was. Her emotions were in turmoil by the time she was bathed, dried, dressed and floated down the stairs. Every little misdemeanour since she‘d met him, every slight she’d ever thought regarding the Professor, went through her mind and magnified itself. Especially the thoughts she’d had since coming here. She didn’t want him to hate her any more, she couldn’t deal with it and didn’t know how she’d cope if he started to shout at her now. Her stomach was in knots when they approached the library doors.
“Cassia, are you sure you don’t know what he want to see me about?”
