Chapter 30
Kathy was tired by the time they returned to Hogwarts. She’d felt uncomfortable ever since Remus asked her to the ball. Yes he reminded her of David, but she wasn’t looking to find another David, no one could replace him in her heart. In fact she wasn’t looking for another anyone, though she couldn’t deny that she had growing feelings for Severus, whether she wanted them or not. It was also clear Tonks liked Remus, a lot, and she had a feeling Remus knew it too. She told him she was already going with Severus, then suggested he ask Tonks. Kathy liked Tonks, she was bubbly, funny, and sensible when she put her mind to it. Her aniwhatsit abilities took a bit of getting used to at first, but they were fascinating too and Kathy soon learned to enjoy watching the changes that came about the young witch.
While they were there Albus asked for volunteers to attend Hogwarts at their own convenience, to act as guinea pigs for Kathy. He needed others for her to practice her control with other than him.
Kathy was outraged at his suggestion, she still hadn’t recovered from the Hippogriff incident and didn’t want to endanger anyone.
There were several volunteers however and her objections were ignored.
She grumbled about it all the way down to the dungeons, suggested they install an escalator like the one at Marks & Spencer’s, then continued her tirade about the volunteers.
It was only when Severus closed the office door that she realised Albus was not with them.
“Where’s Albus? How am I supposed to gripe at him when he isn’t even here?”
“Albus left us the moment we entered the Main Hall. You have been mostly countering to yourself for the past ten minutes. What is an escalator?”
She threw her hands in the air and rolled her eyes. “I give up. Bloody interfering old bugger he is.”
“I have been telling him that for years. Whiskey?”
“Why not, I could do with one after tonight. You know that bloke from the other meeting, Black is it?”
He nodded.
“Yeah, well Remus said he wanted to ask me to go to the ball with him. Of all the bloody nerve.”
“I assumed that Lupin was asking for himself.”
“He did, but I told him to ask Tonks. I think she has a thing for him, have you noticed how she looks at him?”
“It is a well known fact that Nymphadora has a crush on Lupin, he knows it too and he likes her. He’s just too stupid to do anything about it.”
“You know she hates that name. She would rather be called Tonks.”
“I know, that is why I call her be her given name. It annoys her.”
“Tonks’ right, you really are a git.”
Severus spluttered in his drink as Kathy downed her whiskey, stood, and said goodnight.
“I can’t believe you called me that. You’re going to bed already?”
“No, I’m gonna have a long soak in the bath first.” Molly had told her that there was no need to ration the hot water at Hogwarts, that there was always a good supply of it and even showed her how to use the shower. What they hadn’t discussed was the need for two toilets. “Severus?”
“Hmm?”
“Why have we got two toilets, and why does my spare one squirt the water up instead of down?”
Again he spluttered his drink. “That is a bidet. It is for use after you use the toilet.”
“After? I don’t see the… oh.” When it suddenly dawned on her what the bidet was for, she left for her rooms rapidly.
Molly arrived at Hogwarts a little after five pm on Saturday, just as Kathy stepped from the shower. It was the first time she’d used it and although she found the experience strange, she quite enjoyed it.
The first thing Molly attempted to do was to dry Kathy’s hair with her wand. It didn’t work. So after a good rub with the towel and a brushing, it was left to dry naturally. “Well that negates doing your hair with magic, I’ll just have to do it the old fashioned way.”
Molly put on a pair of Kathy’s magical gloves, then hung up her own outfit next to Kathy’s before using the bathroom herself. There was no point in getting cleaned up at home, then getting covered in soot flooing here.
“It’s a pity we can’t do anything about these.” Molly said, tracing some of the faded marks on Kathy’s back.
Although she’d rapidly healed from the beatings and knife slashes inflicted on her by the Death Eaters, she still bore the scars.
“I know, they look horrible.”
“No they don’t, they are marks of bravery, and don’t you ever forget that.”
“I wasn’t brave Molly, I was scared out of my wits.” Kathy told her earnestly.
“That’s what makes you brave dear, surviving in the face of such adversity takes great courage. You didn’t give up, you came through it and it’s made you a stronger person for all that happened.”
“You think so? I don’t feel stronger.” She said, eyes filling with tears. “My babies, I miss them so much Molly.”
Molly sat down and took her hands in her own. “Oh Kathy, I can’t even begin to imagine what you went through so much, lost everyone dear to you, no mother should outlive her children. Nothing and no one will ever replace what you’ve lost, but life has a way of giving back what it takes, giving us other things that help us move forward. Now here you are, a pretty young woman getting ready for your first ball. You have your whole life ahead of you, a chance to start over, grab it with both hands and take from it what you can. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, to allow others into your life, accept them as they come and live.” She waited while Kathy got over her tears, then sent her back to the bathroom to wash her face. “We can’t have you meeting Severus with a blotchy face and puffy eyes now can we. My goodness, I don‘t think I‘ve ever seen him so tense and nervous.”
Severus stepped out of his shower and dried himself. Wrapped only in a towel, he entered his bedroom and checked for the fifth time that his best dress robes were immaculate and crease free. He admitted to a certain amount of nervousness, though he preferred to think of it as mild discomfort. He disliked being the centre of attention and knew that all eyes would likely be on him when he entered the Great Hall with a woman on his arm, the bat of the dungeon, the greasy git, Severus Snape, supposed vampire extraordinaire, escorting a female to a dance, the students would hopefully either faint, or flee in shock and the ball would be cancelled. He smirked at the imagery in his head at that thought. His smirk dropped at the though of the Dark Lords next summons.
Once he was dressed, he brushed his hair until it shone and fastened it back with a hunter green velvet ribbon that matched exactly the trim on his black robes.
His mind also kept straying to the memory of that bodysuit he knew she would be wearing under her gown and he was forced to adjust his trousers several times.
After checking his watch for the umpteenth time, he decided it was time to knock on Kathy’s door.
“You look beautiful dear. Now remember not to sit down and crease your dress until you are in the hall. I have to go find Arthur, he should be here by now. Severus should be calling for you in a few minutes. Have a lovely evening won’t you.”
“Thank you Molly, I don’t know how I would have managed without you.”
“No thanks necessary, seeing you like this is thanks enough. See you later.” Molly left the dungeons and Kathy was left to pace her rooms while she waited for Severus to knock on her door.
When the knock finally came she almost jumped out of her skin, she was so nervous. What if he didn’t like her gown? What if her hair wasn’t right? What if, after what if, flitted through her mind until she was oblivious to the time. She waited for the second knock as Molly had told her to do, then she took a deep breath and opened the door.
Severus grew concerned when she didn’t answer the door immediately. Had she changed her mind? Did she leave with Molly and forget about him? Had she decided to go with some other wizard instead?
When the door opened after his second knock and he saw her, he was unable to speak. His black eyes washed over her slowly, from the top of her head, down to her feet and back up until he met her eyes. How was he meant to adjust his trousers when he was standing right in front of her?
