The news coming from Hogwarts over the next month seemed to
get worse and worse. Sirius was rapidly
becoming depressed and didn’t understand why James didn’t seem to be
bothered. James barely flinched when he
learned Harry had been banned from playing quidditch.
“Well, that’s unfortunate,” was all he said before going
back to scribbling notes in a journal he’d started carrying around.
A few days before Christmas James sat at the kitchen table
with a box of chocolates and a vial of a pale purplish potion. “What are you doing?” Sirius asked when James
took a syringe and started injecting the potion into the chocolates.
“Sending Umbridge a Christmas present from a secret
admirer,” James answered without looking up.
“You’re going to poison her?” Sirius asked with a shocked
expression.
“Of course not!” James huffed looking a little
offended. “What fun would that be?”
Sirius relaxed a little in his chair. “What do you think will happen with the
giants since Hagrid didn’t have any luck?”
“Nothing pleasant,” James answered as he wrapped up the box
of chocolates. “Dumbledore had another
fight with Hezekiah over it. He wants
Elven support, but he doesn’t like what Hezekiah has planned.”
“Let me guess, it involves violence,” Sirius sighed. He knew Dumbledore always did everything he
could to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.
James nodded. “Very
violent. Hezekiah wants to eliminate the
threat.”
“Eliminate?” Sirius repeated the word. “You mean wipe them out?”
“Pretty much,” James answered with a grim expression. “But you know Dumbledore… He’s still hoping some will join us.”
“Fat chance of that,” Sirius said as he started cleaning up
the dinner dishes. “He and Hagrid were
the only ones who thought it was a good idea to even try.”
James shrugged and went over to the sink to kiss Sirius
lightly on the cheek. “We’ll just have
to wait and see what happens.
Goodnight. I’m exhausted.”
“Goodnight,” Sirius called after James who was climbing the
staircase.
A few hours later Sirius frantically shook James awake. “Get up!
Something’s happened!”
James yawned and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “What?” he asked groggily, Sirius’ words not
quite registering yet.
“Arthur’s been attacked,” Sirius answered.
As soon as James’ brain understood he was instantly
awake. “What? Is he okay?”
“I don’t know,” Sirius sighed looking worried. “I don’t know much yet. Phineas just came to tell me Arthur was
attacked and Harry and the Weasley children are coming by Portkey.
James rolled out of bed and pulled on the nearest pair of
pants. They made it down to the kitchen
just in time to see the kids appear.
“What happened?” James asked again.
Ron looked to Harry who seemed bothered by something. “I… I had a vision,” Harry answered
timidly. “I saw the whole thing.”
James bit his lip and sat down in a kitchen chair. It seemed Dumbledore was right. Harry had a psychic connection to Voldemort.
The silence was broken by Fred and George. “We’re going to the hospital,” they announced
in unison.
“Oh no you’re not,” Sirius argued. “How will you explain knowing what happened
before your mother was even notified?”
The twins were determined and didn’t seem to care about
Order secrecy just then, but James and Sirius eventually convinced them to wait
with the rest of them. Molly would tell
them everything as soon as she could.
As late as it was no one wanted to leave the fireplace and
go to bed so James charmed the kitchen table into a bed large enough to fit all
of them. They all sat in silence staring
intently at the fire. The Weasleys dozed
off after a few hours. James kept
glancing at Harry who was wide awake and obviously deep in thought.
It was a little after five in the morning when they finally
heard from Molly. She sent them a short
note saying Arthur was all right and they could visit in the morning. They all decided to stay right where they
were and get at least a few hours of sleep.
James pulled Harry a little closer and forced himself to stay awake
until sleep finally took his son.
Despite having been up most of the night, everyone was up
and ready to go by mid-morning. Their
trunks had been delivered during the night so they could dress in muggle
clothing. Moody and Tonks came to escort
them to St. Mungos. James really didn’t
think it was necessary, but he was too tired to argue.
The Weasleys and Harry were sent in to see Arthur
first. Harry didn’t seem to want to go,
but he was pulled in by Molly who was extremely grateful toward him.
They had a short visit and then the kids were asked to wait
outside. Since Arthur had been guarding
the prophecy the Order members needed to have a little chat with him. Fortunately Voldemort hadn’t been able to get
his hands on it.
Harry avoided everyone for the next three days. He wouldn’t even talk to his own father about
what was bothering him, which only served to annoy James.
Once Hermione learned what had happened she immediately
cancelled her plans with her parents and took the Knight Bus straight to Grimmauld
Place. They
planned to confront Harry the moment she arrived and find out what was going
on.
Hermione was the one to march up the stairs and drag Harry
into the drawing room. James, Ron, and
Ginny were waiting for them.
James stood up and started pacing around the room. “Sit,” he ordered.
Harry sat down, but still avoided looking at anyone. “We all know what you heard,” James brought
it out in the open.
“Yeah, and you’ve not been able to look at me since!” Harry
shouted.
James started mumbling under his breath and Hermione took
over. “Look Harry, it doesn’t matter who
wasn’t looking at who. Point is, we’re
worried about you.”
Ginny took the opportunity to remind Harry that she’d been
possessed by Voldemort through the diary in her first year. Harry seemed to feel a little better when he
was reminded that he wasn’t as alone as he thought he was.
“Are there any large chunks of time you don’t remember?”
Ginny asked.
Harry shook his head.
Ron was quick to tell him that he’d seen Harry in his bed. Hermione pointed out that it was impossible
to Apparate inside the castle grounds.
A weight seemed to be lifted off Harry’s shoulders. “All right look,” James said and glanced at
each person in the room. “Molly would
kill me if she knew, but given the recent bouts of insanity,” he glared at
Harry for a second, “I’m going to fill you four in.” All of them listened
closely. “Harry, we believe you were
channeling the snake.”
“Channeling?” Harry repeated the word looking confused. “But how could I? I’m not a…”
“A seer?” James finished his sentence. “You might be.”
Harry wrinkled his face up and James rolled his eyes. “Harry, Professor Trelawney is a very poor
example of a seer. I’ve had a few
visions in my time; I just never told anyone about them.”
“What kinds of things have you seen?” Hermione asked
eagerly.
“Let’s not go there…” James said. “All I’ll say for now is that my gift of
clairvoyance is the reason you’re still alive Harry.”
“You foresaw the attack?” Harry asked, suddenly wondering
why his mother wasn’t still alive too.
James nodded. “I
did. I didn’t know the exact day or
anything, but I knew it was coming. So…
I made damn sure you were protected.
Your mother thought putting every protective spell I knew on you was
over kill,” he glanced at Harry’s scar for a brief second, “but somehow I don’t
think it was.”
“So my mother’s sacrifice had nothing to do why I survived?”
Harry asked, suddenly very confused.
“Oh I’m sure that helped,” James said as he sat back
down. “Truth is Harry, no one is really
sure why things happened the way they did, but obsessing over it won’t change
anything. All we can do is sort through
the present and deal with it. Now
somehow a psychic link has formed between you and Voldemort.”
The Weasleys shivered at the name and Harry seemed to get
even more upset. “So I was right, I am a
danger to all of you…”
James sighed, not sure what to say. “If Voldemort ever figures it out then maybe,
but we don’t think he has yet. From all
the information we’ve gathered it seems to be a one way street through that
scar of yours. It hurts you when he’s
feeling a strong emotion. And we think
he’s also linked to his snake and was watching the attack. Somehow you intercepted it and saw
everything. It’s all a bit fuzzy, but
we’re not too worried about it just yet.
We’re worried about you. So why
don’t you come down and help us decorate for Christmas.”
Harry gave a slight nod.
He wasn’t feeling much better, but now that things were laid out on the
table he decided not to worry anyone further.
His friends cared enough to drag him out of his room and his father
cared enough to tell him the truth. He
decided he would have a happy Christmas and deal with everything later.
