Chapter Thirty
Ahh, here we are so close to the end! Thank you to one and all that have taken the time to read, not to mention review. There's just this chapter with an epilogue to follow. Not to worry, it's being posted today as well. Thanks.

Chapter Thirty
Severus was in Lucius’s private study already partaking in the Malfoy’s private stock of fire whiskey when the man himself came strolling into the room. The headmaster’s eyebrows shot up at the sight of the regal blond wearing nothing more than a Champagne colored silk robe, but mentioned nothing about it.
Handing him a drink, Severus said, “It’s over.”
“Really? What happened?” Lucius asked as he sat down behind his desk.
The dark wizard told him about what happened in the interrogation room with his half-brother. And then went on to say, “We were able to find Yaxley. The camp had moved further south to an abandoned farm, but we were able to find him.” He took a deep drink and let out a sigh. “The stupid bastard was at death’s door. Yaxley was more than likely getting there when Rabastan confronted him. It explains how LeStrange was able to get away at all.”
“How so?” Lucius inquired, looking far more interested now.
Severus thought about how Hermione had asked him to go with the aurors. When he had asked why, she told him that between both her as well as Lucius they wouldn’t he satisfied with only the word of those hunting the man down. True, Harry would be there, but the elder Malfoy wouldn’t trust his say so. And for Hermione, well, if she couldn’t go, her husband was the next best thing to being there herself.
They had shown up and were pointed right away to where Yaxley was. The man was lying in the dark with a problem that could be smelled from ten feet away. The putrid stench of a massive infection hit anyone who came into his tent and had many of the aurors there turning away sick.
It was Severus and Harry with mouths and noses covered with a charm that prevented odors to be detected that went over to Yaxley, who tried feebly to hex them. Harry took the wand with little effort and Severus went to check what had this once feared death eater on his dying. When he found the festering wound in the man’s thigh, he knew the very moment this had happened and just who had done it to him.
Looking into Yaxley’s glazed eyes, Severus asked, “Why didn’t you go to a healer?”
The once brutal wizard tried to snort, but only was able to let out a heavy sigh. “That mudblood bitch can’t kill me. No mudblood can…” Death came right at that very moment, making his last words ring with irony all the more.
It wasn’t until after they made a search of the grounds that they found out the fate of the house elf his half brother Jude had gifted to him. A small, shallow unmarked grave was ten meters away from his tent. It was clear from what remained of the little body that Yaxley had killed him in a fit of temper the week before. So much for protection, Severus thought with a weary sigh and left the site to inform his friend.
“So that’s all?” Lucius inquired, sounding tired. “Are you going to tell Hermione about the wound causing Yaxley’s death?”
“She may have been the one to stab him, but she wasn’t the one to keep him from a mediwitch.” He looked into his friend’s eyes and said, “Hermione doesn’t need to know.”
Nodding Lucius murmured, “Agreed.” Silence settled in between them for a moment before Lucius asked, “Why did he send the bodies to me?”
“Polyjuice mind poisoning is what it’s been called in the past in every text I’ve read,” Severus told him. “It happens with excessive use of the potion. Each change made effects the brain and with more changes, the bigger the damage to the central nervous system. It’s also rather addictive after a time. It becomes an evil, downward cycle that feeds itself.”
Lucius winced. “It made him a lunatic, I suppose.”
“To put it mildly,” Severus stated, finishing off his drink. Standing up he set his glass down and watched as it was magicked away by an unseen elf. “I must be off. Hermione wishes to bribe me with sex in order to talk me into allowing her to teach at the school.”
“What class?”
“I haven’t the foggiest, but I plan on enjoying her efforts to the fullest.” With a nod of his head, Severus Snape took his leave.
It was over, Lucius thought with a weary sigh as he got to his feet and went to the fireplace. Leaning on the mantel, he allowed the weight he had been feeling holding him down become as light as a bubble and float away. Two very female arms went about his waist and he felt a kiss being pressed to his back.
“What news did he have?” Luna asked him in her lilting tones that soothed what was left of his worn nerves.
Turning he took her into his arms, murmuring, “It’s over.”
Sighing she pressed her face into his chest. “I told you that they would take care of everything.”
“That you did, pet,” he said, tilting her face towards his own. “How is it that you’re so wise?”
She shrugged absently. “Dinner?”
Smiling he scooped Luna up and carried her towards the bedroom announcing, “I want dessert first.”
