Luna lay near the lake, staring at the blue sky. The ground was wet with melted snow but March was unusually warm that year so it was expected. The chilly breeze made the warmth of Hogwarts castle popular that day. Only a few brave students ventured outside to enjoy as much as March’s ‘warm’ month as possible. Luna didn’t mind the chill. Any excuse to get away from the castle was enough to make her endure the Scottish weather.
Luna reflected over the last few months of her life. With Ginny’s gentle coaxing, she slowly left the fog of her depression. The patience that Ginny had for Luna made her realize that her true friends were the ones that stayed with her, no matter what. She may not have had a lot of friends, but the ones she did have helped her heal her heart.
Though Ginny was a wonderful friend, she had a full life to lead. With her having two boyfriends to attend to every night (the red head was forced to confess the unusual relationship to Luna after she was caught in a compromising position with Professor Snape and Lucius Malfoy on the teacher’s desk in the potions room—it seemed Snape forgot that Luna served detention with him that night), she didn’t have a lot of time for her friends.
In fact, Ginny, Neville Longbottom, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley were Luna’s only friends that hung out with Luna in her free time—and that was enough for Luna.
Luna
Luna sprung up and looked over her shoulder to see who called her. She saw nothing but the little patches of snow covering the ground. She strained to hear the voice again but could hear nothing but the wind. Shrugging a shoulder, she lay back on the soggy grass and hummed a tune she had heard from a muggle radio her father owned. She planned on asking her father to give her some muggle currency so she could purchase one of those iPod dealios.
Luna
Luna sat up again, repeating her actions from before but yielding the same results. She frowned darkly, realizing that someone was more likely than not playing a trick on her.
She flopped back down and crossed her arms across her chest, trying not to let her anger get the best of her. It had been a long time since anyone made fun of her and her love for imaginary things. Still, it wasn’t rare to have an occasional Slytherin trip her in the hallway or steal her wand just for kicks.
Luna
Luna closed her eyes, ignoring the call of her name. She hoped the devious students would grow bored of trying to bait her and go away. After ten minutes of blessed silence Luna was confident that the students went away.
Luna began to hum again, crossing her legs and shaking them. She felt something crawling on her belly but brushed it off, thinking it was a bug. The crawling began again but this time when she went to brush the same bug off, it stayed glued to her belly.
Luna opened her eyes and was greeted with the sight of a very tiny pixie like creature, standing on her stomach and shooting her a dark glare.
You are a very rude girl Luna Lovegood. I tried calling you but you ignored me. And then you had the nerve to brush me off of your stomach. I should turn your ears green for this!
Luna’s eyes were as wide as saucers as the angry pixie stomped her foot into Luna’s stomach for emphasis.
“I’m—I’m sorry … I didn’t ...”
The pixie made a slashing motion with her hand across her neck, stopping Luna from saying anything more.
I’ll forgive you this one time but next time you’re in a world of trouble if you anger me again.
Luna simply nodded, too shocked to say anything else.
Now that we’ve reached that understanding, we have some business to deal with. To start off with, I’m a Humplefrank and you have a duty to protect us from stupid wizards and muggles.
Luna closed her eyes and slowly counted to ten. Maybe she was running a fever from going into the cold too often. Taking a deep breath, Luna opened her eyes again. The Humplefrank was still there. She knocked herself in the head a few times but the pixie thing was still on her stomach. It was tapping its foot impatiently and glaring again.
“I’m surely dreaming right now. Maybe it’ll go away if I pinch myself or something,” Luna murmured.
The Humplefrank rolled its eyes.
I don’t have time to convince you that I’m a real magical creature. Your mother left you a letter buried in the Forbidden forest for you to read. You’ll believe me after you read it.
“Why would my mother bury a letter in the forbidden of all places?” Luna asked the Humplefrank. The little thing obviously wouldn’t leave her be so she decided to go along with the flow of everything.
Because girl, you’re the chosen one! Your responsibility is a very important one—you are to be the voice for unseen magical creatures everywhere. Your mother buried the letter here so that, in the event of her death, you would be able to access it and learn your responsibilities. My duty today is to tell you where to find your letter and explain in detail what your duties are regarding Humplefranks and all of the other unseen magical creatures in the world. I will also be your guide in everything, the same way my mother was to your mother.
Luna simply stared at the Humplefrank. She didn’t know what to say. All of her life, she was led to believe that these magical creatures were real. But when her mother died, her belief in the creatures died as well. Should she just walk back to the castle and ignore what the creature on her belly was saying and live a normal life or should she just follow the flow and what listening to the creature would bring?
The Humplefrank watched Luna think, already knowing in its heart what the small blonde girl would say.
After five minutes of thought, Luna shrugged a shoulder and focused on the Humplefrank once again.
“Lead the way,” she said.
The Humplefrank grinned and hovered in the air.
Follow me.
Without a thought for her safety, Luna walked into the shadows of the forbidden forest. She was lead through twists and turns, surprised to note that the dangerous creatures in the forest left her alone.
Finally, the Humplefrank stopped at a place in the forest, surrounded by a circle of trees. In the very middle of the trees was a shiny bright green rock. Luna smiled softly—her mother’s favorite color had been that outrageous shade of green.
Luna walked to the rock and sat down. After removing the rock from its place she slipped her wand from behind her ear and murmured a detection spell. Her wand lit up and jetted from her fingers. A hole was formed in the ground, the sheer power from the tip of her wand making the dirt come up at an incredible speed.
Luna watched in detached fascination as a box was uncovered. Its work finished, the wand set itself neatly next to the box. Luna stared at the elegant letters of her mother’s name. She knew that in opening that box, she acknowledged that her mother was gone for good, and that she was taking over a role that was important to her mother. Was she ready to let go?
Luna closed her eyes and allowed all of the images she had been suppressing for months flood through her head. All of the moments she had with her mother and father as a family played in her mind like scenes in a muggle movie. She loved her mother dearly, but the last thing the late Mrs. Lovegood would have wanted was for Luna to spend her life grieving for something she couldn’t change.
Luna opened the box.
Inside was a piece of parchment, and a worn pair of something that was a cross between goggles and bifocals. She held the weird things in her hands, studying them curiously before setting them down gently on the ground. She grabbed the parchment and unfolded it, feeling a sense of excitement and dread.
Dear Luna,
If you are reading this, chances are that I died before I had a chance to tell you about the amazing duty you have that every decedent of my mother’s family line—the Titans—have had. I wished that I had lived to be with you during the most difficult and uncomfortable years of your life but I guess the other Titans truly needed me in the afterlife. I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there for you to help you train for your duties but I’m sure the Humplefranks will do an excellent job of helping you transition into doing what you were born to do.
In essence, your duty is to take care of all of the small creatures in the world that control the magic in the air and keep our world in balance. You have a very big responsibility on your shoulders and it must be done. We wouldn’t even be able to worry about a war without these creatures keeping the forces in balance. You have to do everything you can to make sure these creatures are cared for until you have a daughter or son to pass this responsibility on to. I can’t tell you much more for the information that you will be receiving soon is classified information that only you, your spouse and children can know.
You have a long journey ahead of you sweetie but you’ll find that the creatures you are protecting and your spouse will be there to support you. Don’t spend your life mourning for me—I know I’m enjoying myself in the afterlife filled with wizards and muggles. Don’t give up hope when hope seems to have disappeared from your life. Don’t ever lose sight of your duty. I will always be there for you as you will soon find out through various creatures.
Take care of your father and bring him as much joy as you can manage—he shouldn’t wallow in his grief forever either.
I love you darling, and I hope that life treats you gently with all of the good you’re doing for creatures who have no say for what goes on in the world.
Much love,
Theia Lovegood
Luna wiped the stray tears that fell down her cheek as she read her mother’s letter. It hurt to know that she wouldn’t be able to see her mother for the rest of her life but the letter was her first step to healing and closure. She would do what she was born to do and move on with her life, but her mother would always be in her heart.
Luna wasn’t too surprised when the weird goggles were lifted up by a bright, sparkling light. She grabbed them from the air and put them on.
The small Humplefrank was much easier to see. Her eyes had begun to hurt from the constant squinting of trying to see the small creature.
Today has been a long day for you. We will begin our training later. For now, go back to the castle and enjoy the rest of your day off.
Luna smiled gratefully at the small creature and stood, brushing the dirt from her legs. She walked out of the forest, noticing more small creatures waving at her as she did so. It was as if a veil was lifted from her eyes and she could see the world clearly for the first time ever.
The magical creatures’ smiles and happiness were contagious and she found herself waving back at them. By the time she made it out of the forest, her heart felt lighter than it had in a long time.
When Luna was alone once again, her good mood disappeared at the sight in front of her. As if watching the scene in slow motion, she watched Ginny move towards the lake, following a person who looked like Professor Snape. Luna knew that couldn’t have been right since Professor Snape didn’t walk the way this person was walking.
It was then that Luna noticed the vacant look in Ginny’s eyes.
‘She’s under the Imperius curse!’
Luna whipped out her wand but before she could attack, the Snape impersonator grabbed Ginny and disappeared with a pop. It was impossible to apparate on school grounds and the only way someone could have made it possible was to use some kind of dark magic.
Without thinking through it any further, Luna sprinted to the castle as fast as her legs could carry her.
Professor Snape was busy terrorizing his seventh year NEWT level students when Luna burst into the classroom out of breath. Too surprised to snap at the blonde girl, he let her lean against his desk and suck in a few gulps of air.
The golden trio looked at the sight, uneasy feelings flowing through their guts. Everyone knew that Luna was out of the ordinary but bursting in the classroom was strange, even for her. She was a Ravenclaw after all …
Finally, Luna had enough breath to say what she needed to say. She leaned into Snape’s personal space and began to whisper.
“Ginny was taken a few moments ago by a figure in a dark cloak who looked a lot like you,”
Snape felt his stomach drop at the news.
“Why are you here? Why didn’t you stop them?”
“I couldn’t! He disappeared with her in thin air. It had to have been dark magic for its impossible to apparate on Hogwarts grounds,”
Snape pushed Luna out of the way and started toward the door.
“Class dismissed,” he barked before leaving the classroom.
The students looked puzzled but quickly vanished their things and jetting out of the classroom before the Professor came back and changed his mind.
The golden trio quickly vanished their materials and ran up to Luna who finally felt well enough to stand.
“What happened?” Harry demanded.
“Ginny was taken away a few minutes ago. I tried to stop them but they were too fast. I came back here as fast as I could to tell Snape,”
All three students looked at Luna in horror.
“We have to go help them,” Harry said, sprinting away before any of them could stop him.
Ron was right behind, looking pale and sick.
Hermione was the last to follow after giving Luna a quick one armed hug.
Luna wasted no more time in the classroom. She ran to the DADA classroom but opened the door more carefully that time. She already had Snape out looking for traces of Ginny and felt no need to rush too much to tell Bill.
Luna didn’t know why she had the urge to tell Bill. She should have simply went after Ron, Harry and Hermione to see in what ways she could help but she just didn’t feel right in investigating any further without Bill there to help.
As soon as she was on the other side of the door she locked eyes with Bill. She waved him frantically to the door. He gave a curt nod and assigned the class a reading before quickly making his way to Luna.
When he made it to her, he put ear toward her lips, murmuring his question of why she was there.
“Ginny was taken. You need to make your way to the lake now with Professor Snape,” Luna whispered.
Bill paled visibly, staring at Luna in disbelief.
“Are you sure?”
“I’m positive—I saw it happen and dark magic was used to get her out of here. We need your expertise to figure out if there’s any way to trace it,”
Bill snapped up, barking that class was over in very much the same fashion that Snape had done just minutes earlier before jetting out of the classroom.
Luna followed him, ignoring the murmurs behind her back. As she tried to keep up with the eldest Weasley, she made a mental note to start running in the mornings again. She was more out of shape than she thought.
By the time Luna and Bill made it to the lake, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Professor McGonagall, Hagrid, Dumbledore and Snape all stood near the lake, scouting for signs of Ginny.
“Where was she taken?” Bill asked turning to Luna.
Luna pointed to the space by the tree. Bill walked toward the spot with purpose and waved his wand over it. A mist of black swirled around the space.
“Well, it was dark spell but it’s too complicated for me to decipher what it is,” Bill said when everyone crowded to where he was.
“Are you telling me you don’t know what spell was used?” Snape growled, clenching his fist.
Bill glared at the dark Potion Master.
“Are you deaf? No I don’t know what spell was used” Bill growled back.
“Some bloody curse breaker you are—”
Dumbledore stepped in before Snape could start ranting.
“Severus, calm down. Yelling at Bill will not get Ginevra back—I’m sure that if he could, he would have her back in a heart back as you would if you knew what to do,”
There was no twinkle in Dumbledore’s eyes but he was filled with a sense of calm as he assessed the situation.
“Why don’t we all go back to the castle and brainstorm who could have Ginevra and where she could have possibly gone,” he said after a long, tense silence.
He silenced the rising protest by simply putting his hand in the air.
“She’s gone and standing here will not get her back. We need to figure out who her enemies are and where they could have taken her,” Dumbledore said firmly, looking mainly at Snape.
He addressed the rest of the group after having a long stare off with Snape.
“Minerva, will you go look after the students and make sure no one else is missing? Hagrid can you run a search of the grounds and ask any creatures if they saw anything? Mister Potter, Mister Weasley, and Miss Granger, I know this will be hard but I need you to follow Minerva back to the castle and stay with the students. I cannot risk losing more of you,”
“But Professor that’s my bloody sister!” Ron exploded.
“I understand Mister Weasley but there’s nothing more you can do for her at this moment. If we hear anything more on Ginevra’s status then we will contact you but until then, you will have to wait with the other students,”
Ron’s face turned a deep shade of red but he clamped his mouth shut after Harry put his hand on his friends shoulder. He glared darkly at Dumbledore too but knew what the Headmaster said was true—there was nothing they could do until they got more information on who had Ginny and where she was.
Somewhat satisfied that Ron wouldn’t give him anymore trouble, Dumbledore faced Bill, Snape, and Luna.
“I will need you three to come to my office and talk more about what happened today,”
“I will need to floo Lucius before we start this meeting,” Snape said crossing his arms across his chest.
“Maybe we should wait to tell Mister—”
“We tell Malfoy now,” Snape growled.
Dumbledore sighed in defeat and nodded his consent.
Wearing a grim expression, Snape stalked back to the castle.
Everyone went about their tasks, noticing that the sky darkened with grey clouds to match their moods.
---
Ginny threw up. She held her head, groaning in agony as she felt as if her skull was splitting in two. She tried to open her eyes but the light made her shut them tight again.
She couldn’t think, much less stand with the pain. All she could seem to comprehend was the fact that she was lying on a cold floor trying to breathe past the migraine from hell.
Time was endless to Ginny. The pain in her head was so bad that she couldn’t get even the most basic critical thinking through. She didn’t know where she was nor did she try to analyze why she was somewhere cold and unfamiliar.
Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the pain lessened more and more until it was nothing more than a dull throb.
Ginny cautiously opened one eye and let out a sigh of relief when she didn’t have an instant migraine. She opened both her eyes wide and took a look around where she had been while she went through the pain.
She sat in a small cell like room. The floor and the walls were a dull grey concrete. In one corner sat a very stiff, rundown bed with one sheet and a lumpy pillow. Next to the bed was a bucket and over the bucket was a very small window with bars on it. Above Ginny’s head was a pile of what she emptied when she threw up. Upon observing the disgusting pile, it was almost completely dry which meant
Ginny had been in that painful trance for quite some time.
Ginny sat up the best she could with her large stomach and dizzy head. The inside of her mouth tasted disgusting but she knew she couldn’t spit on the floor to rid herself of it because she would be stuck with it for lord knew how long.
With a lot of work and effort, Ginny made her way onto the hard and lumpy bed. She held onto her stomach, taking in the extra magic she carried. It took away the few minor aches she had in her joints from lying on the cold ground for so long.
The last thing she remembered was eating lunch. While walking to class with Dean, Snape told her that Lucius needed her. Too worried about what Lucius would need, Ginny realized too late in a dark corner of the hallways that Snape wasn’t really Snape. The impersonator put her under the Imperius curse and made her walk outside with him.
He grabbed her around the waist once out by the lake and her last memory was a burst of pain that hit her head hard; it nearly split her skull in half. She didn’t remember being dropped on the floor, or anything else for that matter. If the small, dirty space she was in meant anything, she was not there for a friendly visit.
Ginny closed her eyes and put her head in her hands. There was nothing else she could do at that moment. She simply had to wait to see what her captor (or captors) wanted from her.
