Chapter 30- Pandemonium
Angry shouts and pandemonium ensued inside the Weasley’s formal dining room. Minerva had to pound the table for a full minute and use the Sonorus Charm before she was able to call the room to order.
“Members of the Order of the Phoenix! I will not have this meeting descend into chaos before it has even begun!”
The Headmistress looked at each member in turn. From her left sat Harry, Arthur, and Molly followed by Remus, Hermione, and Hagrid. On the opposite end of the table was her second in command, Rabastan Lestrange. From there sat Ginny and George Weasley, the Transfiguration Professor Fishwick, Arithmancy Professor Vector, Neville Longbottom and Ava Longbottom.
“Now that I have your undivided attention, I call this meeting to order. You are all aware, by now, of the grave circumstances that transpired at this residence very early this morning. Our very own Severus Snape has gone missing along with Professor Lupin’s son Teddy. A favorite toy of the child’s was found in the vicinity of a torn scrap of clothing bearing the Professor’s initials. All we have to go on are those two items and a large, scorched area of ground.
“My initial conclusion is that a Confringo spell was cast at someone or something at that location. The only other magical residue is the use of a Port Key which we have been unable to trace. I do not want anyone jumping to conclusions as to the demise or disappearance of our dear Teddy. We have very little evidence to suggest a motive or conclusion. I did not detect any human remains; therefore, we can assume Teddy and the Professor are presumably, still alive.”
Lupin jumped up from his seat, knocking it back, his blood running hot. “My son is missing, Minerva, and you know damn well that Severus the snake took him! You told me yourself he seemed despondent. He probably kidnapped Teddy, met up with some of his former cronies in exchange for transport out of here, and god knows what else in exchange for the life of my innocent son!”
“That’s a lie!” Hermoine shouted at Lupin, flabbergasted at the accusations he was spinning. It seemed so unlike him to fling judgment around like so much rubbish. “He would never do such a thing! Severus may have been a dangerous man, but he would never hurt a child!”
“Are you fucking blind, Hermione? He has kidnapped my son and sold us all out to some rogue band of Death Eaters, or worse, Shacklebolt! Any minute, they’ll come pounding at the door to Hogwarts and we’ll all be sacked, or worse, sent to one of their Inquisitorial prisons. It’s your fault he’s alive in the first place!”
Hermione could only let her jaw drop in stunned apprehension. This was not the Remus she loved and remembered. There was clearly more going on in his head than she was privy to. She started to retort, but was stopped short by the Headmistress.
“That will be quite enough, Remus. I understand your distress at having your son come up missing, but pointing fingers and laying blame will not bring him back to us any sooner.”
Hermione had never seen Remus come so unhinged. She was unnerved by everyone else’s lack of reaction to this seemingly major change in his behavior since before her departure to the Ministry-run hospital Manor.
Molly scooted Lupin’s chair back in and helped him sit back down. “He’s all I’ve got left,” he whispered. “He’s all that’s left of my beloved Nymphadora.”
Hermione’s heart went out to him momentarily when his rage turned to abject sorrow. He was projecting his anger on to Severus because of Teddy going missing. That explained it; he was numb and overcome with grief.
She moved to rub his back, but he shrugged her off. “Don’t touch me. Just, don’t. I don’t want your sympathy. Not after you supported that monster.” He cast her an ugly look of disgust over his shoulder as she gasped and stumbled back to her chair in disbelief.
Minerva slapped her hand on the table. “Remus, if you can’t control yourself I will have to have Rabastan remove you from this meeting.” Lupin stared down at the table and fell silent. “Now, Harry, do you think you can make some discreet inquiries while on your patrols?”
“Yes Ma’am. I’ll keep my ear to the ground.”
“Rabastan, please find out if the Ministry has any knowledge of this incident. This reeks of Shacklebolt.”
“Yes Ma’am.”
“Ginny, I want you to take some samples of the scorched earth to Mr. Ollivander’s shop. Sometimes he is able to place a trace on the essence of the material and trace it back to a particular type of wand. It is not an exact science, but we can rule out certain people if he is successful.”
“Yes Headmistress McGonagall.”
“Hagrid, please check your sources in Knockturn Alley and the Forbidden Forest. If someone has run across a small boy and Severus together, there is bound to be some gossip for the right price.”
“Right ye are Minerva.”
“Professor’s Fishwick and Vector will take on extra patrols and stay alert to the student gossip.”
The two named Professors indicated their understanding. “George, Arthur, Molly and Neville, please be on standby to be called to action in case we need backup in response to a lead in the disappearance.
“Hermione, I cannot risk having you out and about. I need you to stay here and watch the children, for if Molly needs to leave on short notice. You are my information liaison between all Order members outside of Hogwarts and Rabastan. Everyone outside of Hogwarts will report to Hermione. Everyone inside Hogwarts will report to Rabastan, including Hermione. We will meet bi-weekly now instead of monthly. This very personal attack on two of our own tells me there is someone out there who knows more about our activities than we presume. We must all be very careful from here on out. I don’t want any more unexpected casualties.”
Just then, Molly shrieked in surprise as Remus forcefully grabbed Hermione by the nape of her neck, fisting a handful of her long hair. His wand was pressed deeply into the side of her neck, and he had a rabid look in his eyes. If one looked closely, they could see a swirl of color, much unlike his own normal hazel-green hue.
Minerva stood up very slowly. “Remus, what do you think this is going to accomplish?”
Remus felt his blood boil, a strange song vibrating in the back of his mind. Something was calling to him, urging him to act on instinct. It whispered to him about conspiracies and death. His breath came in short gasps as he spat out, “She’s, she’s one of them. She’s got to be. It’s not just coincidence, you know. They’ve had the past two weeks to plan this. Her room is right next to his. She volunteered to spend the past year at that Death Eater facility! For all we know, she was planning on milking the Order for information and then slipping out after dark to join Snivellus after tonight’s meeting.”
Harry mouthed the strange word emanating from Remus’ mouth. “Snivellus?” Since when had Remus ever referred to Snape as that?
Everyone at the table was on their feet and oblivious to the detail Harry had picked up on. Every hand was poised to grab their wands at the slightest opportunity.
Remus jerked Hermione back severely when Hagrid made a move to grab her. “Don’t even try it. Don’t cross me. I’m not backing down. All I’ve ever done is sit back and let everyone else control my life and condemn me for what I am. Not this time. No one takes the one thing most precious to me and gets away unpunished.”
“Remus, please, you are not in your right mind. Think about who you are threatening! Miss Granger would never hurt your son!” Minerva pleaded.
“That’s what that bastard Snivellus brainwashed you to believe! Would you be in your right mind if it were your child, Minerva? Arthur? No, you wouldn’t. You would go after those responsible. Well that’s what I am doing, and I am starting with the lover of that filthy traitor!”
Harry trained his wand on Lupin. “Professor Snape is not a traitor! I used Legilimency on him and Hermione. They weren’t hiding anything!”
“You don’t know that!” Lupin roared. “You don’t know anything about that monster!”
“I’m inclined to agree.” Rabastan inclined his head to Remus, his palms open before him. “Severus may have worked for Dumbledore as I have, but I guarantee you he did not disclose to last Headmaster, everything that was vital regarding his service to the Dark Lord. I wouldn’t put anything past him.”
“Rabastan! Do NOT encourage him!” Minerva hissed.
“Let her go!” Harry threatened as he brandished his wand at Remus.
“Remus, please, I promise I would never do anything to your son. I’ve been caring for him all week and he’s the loveliest little boy I’ve ever met.” Hermione was near tears.
“Save it, you backstabbing bitch!” Lupin bit out.
Everyone gasped. Harry lunged forward, but Lupin had anticipated and brandished out a shrill, “Ventus!” A powerful blast of air shot forth from his wand, pushing back the occupants of the room and allowing him time to drag Hermione from there through the doorway.
The wind subsided as he left the room. Harry and Arthur scrambled out the door of the formal dining area first. A sharp ‘Crack!’ reverberated from the kitchen.
Everyone rushed into the kitchen; too late, Remus had Apparated away with Hermione.
Minerva ushered everyone back to the formal dining room, but pulled aside the Deputy Headmaster. “Rabastan, I need you to put aside your personal grudges and go back to Hogwarts and search for Remus. Check his quarters first, then the dungeons. Anywhere you think he may have gone. If you find him, do not engage him. Come and get me first.”
“Yes, Minerva.” With a soft ‘pop’, he obeyed.
McGonagall went back to the dining room and addressed the group. “Considering the circumstances, I will adjourn this meeting. Please remember your instructions and report to Molly Weasley, until we are able to apprehend Professor Lupin and bring Hermione safely back to the Burrow. I had planned on discussing our plans concerning the Prophecy, but that topic will be shelved until two weeks from now. Our current priority is the recovery of Hermione, Severus, if possible, and especially little Teddy. Meeting adjourned.”
They all went their separate ways. Arthur held Molly in his arms long after everyone was gone while she sobbed into his shoulder. “Why does it always have to end this way? This house and family are cursed.”
Arthur Weasley shushed her softly and replied, “It’s not the end my dear, it’s only the beginning. We’ll get them back. Just you wait and see. It’ll be alright.”
