Harry had been right. The conversation was an absolute nightmare.
He had walked with his friends to Gryffindor tower before walking with Silver to the rooms he now shared with Edge. Harry asked to talk with his Sire the next night after his lessons and naturally the vampire had agreed. So here Harry was, sitting on the sofa in front of the fire in Edge’s rooms. Draco had left to visit with Severus in the meantime. Edge had to mock threaten Harry to get him started but once going Harry found it easy. It helped that his Sire said nothing until he was through.
Harry looked at Edge when the vampire didn’t speak. He had his eyes closed and head tilted back against the cushions. Did his Sire fall asleep? Really?
Edge sighed softly. “I know what you have done. I felt it the night you did it.”
Harry swallowed nervously. Edge’s voice sounded off. He couldn’t tell if the man was upset, sad, indifferent, or all three. “You felt it?”
Edge nodded. He crossed a leg over the other before he looked at Harry. His blue eyes held something Harry could not understand. “Right now it is simply a claiming mark. It does not change anything in regards to the Pair bond you two share. It does; however, tell everyone else that Severus is now officially claimed and spoken for.”
Harry felt his eye widen. “You mean…” Harry felt himself beginning to blush.
“You’ve claimed him for yourself; claimed him with the intent of forming a Mate bond.” Edge chuckled dryly, throwing back his drink and turning to stare into the fire.
“But Mate bonds can only be formed between vampires, right?”
A small smile crept onto Edge’s face. “I see you’ve spoken with Hermione. I wondered why she was asking questions.”
Harry chuckled. “In all honesty, she was asking for herself. She absorbs all new information like a sponge.”
Edge stood moving to refill his glass. Harry suddenly felt this conversation was not going to be an easy one. Edge only drank when he was stressed which seemed to be happening more and more lately. Harry watched as his Sire downed another glass and refill it again before he moved back to sit beside Harry. It was clear the man was uncomfortable.
“What’s wrong, Edge? Did I do something I shouldn’t have?”
“No, Harry.” Edge shook his head. “It shouldn’t surprise me at this point. You took to Severus remarkably well for someone that supposedly hated the man. The Pair bond probably helped with that a bit honestly.” Edge sighed looking down at the drink in his hand as he swirled it in the glass. He was physically present but his thoughts were miles away.
“I’m sorry, Edge. I was just…”
“Following your instinct? I know.” Edge smiled at Harry. “Don’t feel bad about it. I’m not upset.”
Harry gave Edge a concerned look. “I can tell something is wrong though.” He felt his stomach sinking. Had he messed up again and Edge was just trying to be nice?
“I promise you, Harry, you did nothing wrong by following what your instincts told you to do. What your heart told you to do.” He paused a moment to gather his thoughts. “Sometimes our magic can lead us to something even before we know of the possibility of it.” Edge chuckled when Harry sent him a confused look. “You and Severus are very compatible in many ways. Your growth has been astounding and I am not fully convinced that it’s just due to the man being a Potential. You formed the Pair bond far more quickly than I thought was possible. Even Dante was surprised.”
“You talked to him about me?” Harry felt mildly irritated by that piece of information.
Edge sighed sadly. “Yes. He’s the only one that had the answers I was looking for, unfortunately, so I didn’t have much of a choice.” Edge took a drink from his glass. “There is such a thing as finding a true magical mate. Considering that Animalis are a very magically inclined breed of vampire it shouldn’t be a surprise that we look for magical compatibility above anything else. We can choose any one to be a mate that has compatible magic. They can be human, vampire, werewolf, what have you, but true magical compatibility is rare, for many obvious reasons.”
Harry looked into the fire his thoughts racing. “So you think Severus and I are true magical mates?”
Edge finished his drink and set the glass on the table beside the sofa. “It’s the only thing that makes any kind of logical sense. You were drawn to Severus’ scent and blood the minute you smelled him, yes Remus told me how you reacted to the man when you were first took to his rooms, the Pair bond was formed the very first true feeding you had, which I thought was impossible, and you two have been sharing magic this entire time without any obvious changes to be seen. Normally, with magic sharing there are fluctuations in both parties that are easily noticeable.”
“Then I claimed him.”
“Yes, you did.” Edge sighed. “It shocked me when I felt it. I honestly had no clue what to do. It scared me if I’m honest, still does.”
Harry looked at Edge surprised. “Scares you? Why?”
Edge leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, obviously agitated and stressed. “Because you have put yourself into an impossible corner, Harry.”
“I’m confused.” Harry was starting to feel just a bit afraid himself.
Edge turned to face Harry so quickly that Harry actually jumped. “The Pair bond prevents you from turning him unless the event occurs that he is literally breaths away from death. Where it triggers Severus to be afraid of another vampire taking him, it triggers you to be afraid of his death.”
Harry swallowed thickly, heart pounding in his chest. “I don’t follow. He still dies regardless.”
“He’s already dying, your food source is gone either way, so why not. The Pair bond is about securing the optimal food source and claiming it for your own. It’s never been done with anyone that was not a Potential. Having compatible magic only strengthens it.”
“Okay.” Harry nodded shakily. “So how has the claiming mark changed things?”
Edge closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them again. “The claiming mark is placed with the intent of forming a mating bond. In the case of anyone that is not vampire or a Potential it acts as the mating mark and becomes the bond. If vampire, the bite is returned before the bond is complete. If they are a Potential, they go through transition, return the bite, then the bond is completed.”
“But I physically can’t turn Severus. I get nauseous and close to a panic attack just thinking about it.”
“I know.” Edge looked sad. “Your bond will never be complete unless you are with Severus at the time of his imminent death to begin the transition. Only then could he finish the bond.”
Harry felt himself begin to tremble. His breathing quickened and his heart raced. His chest felt like a thousand pounds was resting on it. Edge instructed Harry to take a few deep breaths. It helped – marginally.
“What happens if I’m not there?”
“Severus dies, and both of the bonds break.” Edge paused to give Harry time to process. Harry took a deep breath trying to hold back tears.
“Does it hurt? The bonds breaking, I mean.”
Edge looked to the fire then back to Harry, his chest tight. “Dante said he felt the Pair bond break but it was manageable. I don’t know about the mate bond, or since it is incomplete, how bad it will be.” Edge pulled Harry close as tears began to fall down his cheeks. “I’m sorry, Harry. I wish I knew more.”
Harry clung to his Sire, burying his face in his chest. “Just the thought of losing him hurts so much. I feel like I can’t breathe.”
Edge took a deep breath giving Harry a squeeze. “You won’t have to worry about it, Harry. As long as I’m around I will protect Severus.” He had been afraid of this when he felt the creation of the bond. Edge closed his eyes tight fighting against his own tears as he held his Childe.
“Do you have a bond?” Harry whispered it so quietly through his sniffles it could have passed for a breath.
Edge tensed before forcing himself to relax. “I was in a Pair bond. My transition was caused by someone other than Dante so it was broke. It hurts much worse for the Potential in that instance.”
Harry shifted to get in a better position against Edge. Edge leaned them both back against the sofa with his head resting on the arm. Both vampires stared into the fire unseeing for long moments.
“As for your feelings about Severus in regards to his question, some of that could be the Pair bond making you nervous; however, you should always trust your instincts, Harry. The Claiming mark connects you two deeper than the Pair bond ever could. Listen to it.” Edge stated seriously.
Harry gave a short nod, just a simple down and back up motion. Almost as though talking about the man summoned him, Harry felt Severus nudge him a bit through their connection.
Harry?
Harry closed his eyes as his heart lurched painfully. I’m okay. How would he be able to tell Severus all of this? Should he tell him? Did the man already know at least some of it?
You don’t feel okay. What’s happened?
Harry shook his head. Edge looked down at him confused for a moment before recognition set in. “Severus?”
Harry startled. “Yeah.”
Really I’m fine, or will be anyway.
You suck at lying, even in your mind.
Harry snorted. Edge watched Harry communicate with Severus mentally feeling almost envious. It was clear just having Severus speaking to him, even just through their minds, was helping Harry calm down.
Learning some ugly truths. Really I’ll be okay. I appreciate the worry.
Who said I was worried, brat? The depressed feeling was getting overwhelming.
Harry smiled. His heart was feeling lighter already. Thanks, Severus.
Harry could still feel the confusion from Severus but the man did not reply verbally. He retreated but stayed close enough that Harry could still feel his presence.
It was then that Harry realized that Edge did not confirm if he had a Mate bond or not. A Pair bond, yes. Harry sat up to look at Edge whose blue eyes seemed lost. He was unsure of how to ask, or if Edge would even be receptive to answering, but Harry wouldn’t push if not. “Are you part of a mate bond?”
Edge blinked and then tensed. His breathing halted a moment and his eyes grew dark. Harry was just about to tell his Sire it didn’t matter before the man relaxed. Those blue eyes looked dull and so lost. It made Harry wish he had just left well enough alone.
“I have been claimed, yes.” Edge took a shuddering breath. “I never got the chance to complete it.”
Harry rested against his Sire trying to offer comfort. “Do you want to?”
Edge didn’t answer for the longest time. His breaths remained forcibly even but his heartrate was slightly elevated in Harry’s ear. Harry waited quietly closing his eyes.
Did he? If he had been asked before Dante had turned back up the answer would have been yes. Edge had spent the entire century looking for his Sire, reaching out for him, longing for him, and still very much in love with the man that had ran from him. Yes, he felt anger and resentment at being left but he held onto the reasoning that his Sire wouldn’t have left him without good reason. Now, though, Edge felt differently. Dante was just so different from what he remembered of the man. Were the memories he held of the vampire true or a romanticized version he had come up with? Edge had thought for a moment over the holidays that maybe Dante would warm back up but that changed rather quickly once Dante was free to leave again. Sure, the vampire was sneaking around, apparently keeping an eye on things, but was still ultimately avoiding Edge and going to great lengths to do so.
“No. I’m fairly certain Dante doesn’t want it completed anymore either. I thought, at first, but…” His voice choked a bit but Edge held himself together. Harry didn’t need his drama on top of his own.
Harry tightened his arms around his Sire. “Can you not break it?” He asked softly. He didn’t want to hurt Edge, or come off as insensitive, but was curious.
“No.” Technically, it could be broken, but someone would have to be powerful enough to override Dante’s power over the mark. Course, if Dante were to die…Edge pushed the thought away vehemently. Dante was his Sire and despite everything a part of Edge would always love Dante. He had no idea what he would do if the other were to die. It had never bothered him before, the incomplete bond, but recently the mark had begun to ache a bit. Edge had a vague idea why but was not interested in pursuing anything, not at the moment anyway. He had too much to deal with that was more important – like making sure every member of his clan made it through this war alive and whole, including Severus and now Draco. The little dragon had snuck his way in for sure.
Harry snuggled close to give comfort as well as seeking comfort in return. Edge smiled fondly down at his Childe running a hand through the dark, unruly locks.
“Should Draco remain with Severus?”
Harry was quiet a moment. He really needed the time to process before facing Severus again as he was not sure he would be able to hold himself together should he face the man right now. Plus he didn’t think he was quite ready for Draco to see him this vulnerable just yet. He nodded closing his eyes. Harry reached out to Severus.
Is Draco still with you?
Yes.
Can he remain in your rooms for the day?
Severus did not respond right away. You are not returning?
Harry paused at the tone of the mans voice. It sounded hesitant yet restrained. Severus was holding himself back most likely behind his shields again. Harry felt his heart ache but ultimately understood the position Severus was in. Did not mean he had to like it.
No…I…need my Sire right now. Please understand.
Acceptance filtered through the connection although Harry also picked up on discontentment.
I do. Draco will remain here. Sleep well, Harry.
The man retreated before Harry could say anything else but he left a lingering feeling of worry, and what Harry has come to recognize as love, behind.

One of the perks of taking his lessons with Harry was that Draco got to sleep in. One of the downsides to hiding away was that he was stuck in one set of rooms for the entire day. Yes, he had classwork and studying he could do but a guy could only look at a school book for so long. Practicing spells and wand work only took so long. He was a teenager for crying out loud and he had plenty of energy to burn with nothing to do. Draco was going to go stir crazy, he just knew it.
Draco knew Harry liked to sleep in his panther form in front of the fire when not snuggled up with Severus. Edge apparently preferred a bed and his human shape. He knew it was creepy watching people sleep but he had been curious, and with anything resembling classwork completed, he had taken to watching the vampire from the bedroom door. This was only once Draco was very sure that Edge was completely out for the day.
He had always assumed that vampires just dropped once the sun rose. The sun was up – vampires were asleep. Not the case, at least, not with Animalis anyway. Edge commonly stayed up a little past sunrise; Draco had set an alarm to check. Edge had given him a confused look to find him awake so early but had said nothing. The vampire even got ready for bed like a normal human being. Draco wasn’t all that sure exactly what he was expecting, but the mans routine just seemed very anticlimactic.
Draco took to studying the vampire during the day. Not that there was much to study. Edge slept but it wasn’t the dead sleep Draco assumed. Maybe Draco should stop assuming he knew anything in regards to vampires. Edge still breathed, just barely, every two to three minutes, maybe? It was long enough between breaths that Draco honestly thought the man really died during the day. A whispered charm and Draco could listen to his heartbeat. Once again it was alarmingly slow. Draco counted between 5-10 beats a minute. He had gotten brave enough one time to touch the vampires skin only to find it cool and soft to the touch, no different than it felt while the man was awake.
He had even discovered that this particular brand of vampire could be woken during the day as well. It had been purely on accident of course. He had convinced Severus to let him work on one of the Potions the class was working on in Edge’s rooms. Of course he ended up adding the Aconite before the potion was cooled properly resulting in the thing exploding. Thankfully, it wasn’t a caustic potion and he was able to clean it up well enough.
His luck though, Edge had appeared in the room, obviously ready for a fight, only to find Draco, and his rooms, covered in bright green potion goo. The two had stared at each other for long moments. Edge blinked at him, looked around the room, then back to Draco with a smile of amusement spreading across his face. A large dollop of green goo dropped from Draco’s hair onto the floor. Seconds later the vampire was using the wall to hold himself up he was laughing so hard. Draco glared at the dark haired vampire but eventually found himself smiling and laughing as well. Edge had looked adorable with an arm wrapped around his abdomen while he wrapped away tears of mirth still trying to catch his breath. Draco had firmly stamped that thought away to be analyzed later.
Edge had been nice enough to stick around and help Draco clean. Draco glared at him whenever he would randomly break out into chuckles obviously visualizing the scene again. As much as Draco acted annoyed, he thought it was nice to see Harry’s Sire relaxed and happy. Draco only typically saw him during training exercises, when Draco was invited that was. The serious and stoic demeanor when helping train compared to this loose and carefree one – Draco would choose this one any day. Those blue eyes were bright in their mirth and his smile lit up his entire face making him look like the young man he undoubtedly was before he was turned. Draco had been entranced.
Currently, though, he was stuck sitting in his godfathers rooms with absolutely nothing to do. Going by Severus’ reactions last night, their conversation had not gone well. Severus had been distracted almost the entire night, so distracted in fact, that Draco had even won their chess match. When Severus had relayed that Harry was staying with Edge, and that he had requested that Draco stay with Severus; Draco had felt a brief moment of irritation that he quickly beat down. Harry had every right to want private time with his Sire, especially if he was as upset as Severus seemed to think he was.
Draco had borrowed Harry’s not-so-much-used-now room for the night. He had slept through Severus leaving this morning but the man had returned to have lunch with him. He had also finished all classwork…again. Draco sighed as he stared upside down at the fireplace; his feet rested along the back of the sofa. Severus would hex him into next week if he caught him like this, not to mention the reaction he would get out of his father. Draco could care less at the moment.
His thoughts kept straying to Edge and Harry. He could imagine them cuddled close for comfort as they often did after stressful events. It meant nothing, obviously, just a component of a close Sire and Childe relationship. Harry obviously had and wanted Severus. That was not going to change anytime soon. So why the hell was he feeling envious all of a sudden? Edge even cuddled close with the two werewolves for comfort on occasion. It was just what they did. It did not mean anything. They all shared some sort of bond that connected them. They were a clan that much was clear. Even Severus was included. Was Draco? They did invite him into the ‘comfort pile’ hadn’t they? Didn’t that mean something? Why did Draco care again?
Draco cursed as his head hit the floor due to his being startled as the door slammed opened. He quickly righted himself to catch a glimpse of Severus disappearing into the bedroom. The hell? Had classes ended already? Draco felt cold settle into the pit of his stomach as Severus emerged wearing different robes. He had been called.
“He’s called you. Now?” Draco tried to keep the panic from his voice as he rounded the sofa.
Severus cursed and shook his arm. “Yes. He’s being insistent. I have to go now.”
“But…” Draco cast a quick Tempus charm. “There is still two hours before sundown.”
“I am aware, Draco.” Severus rushed back into his room looking pale and harried.
Draco felt panic settle throughout. Something just felt wrong. Severus had never been called during the day. He rushed to stand in front of the door to prevent Severus from leaving.
“You can’t go. Somethings not right.” He pleaded. He hated it but he did it regardless.
Severus huffed at him. “I have no choice, Draco. Now move.”
Did Severus look nauseous? Draco stood firm. “He’s never called you during the day. Why now? Don’t go.”
“Draco…”
“What if he knows?”
“There is no proof of that.”
“But Edge won’t be with you.”
Severus grumbled as his arm flared again. “I am not a child, Draco, and I am fully capable of taking care of myself.” He pushed Draco to the side opening the door.
Draco grabbed the back of his robes. “What if he does know? He’ll…”
“I know what he will do.” Severus did not move nor did he turn to look at Draco. He sighed. “Let go, Draco.”
No longer was Severus’ voice urgent. No longer was it snappish. It was resigned. Draco allowed the robes to slide between his fingers, his body feeling numb.
“Tell Harry…” Severus took a deep breath before releasing it. He shook his head. “He knows.”
With that, the door fell closed with a click of finality that had Draco crumbling to the floor.
