“Is everyone here?” Rhapsody asked. She was standing on Melody’s desk so she could see over the sea of people in the classroom.
Cadence jumped on the desk with her and scanned the room, her lips moving silently as she counted in pairs. She frowned. “We’re missing someone.”
“Who?” Rhapsody asked, scanning the room before gasping. “Albus.”
“Where is he?” Cadence asked.
Rhapsody collapsed on the desk. “Gregory has him.”
“Shit,” Aiden snapped. “How bad?”
“Give me a minute,” Rhapsody panted, searching through her muddled visions for a clearer picture. “James, I need you.”
James rushed to the front, leaping on the desk and offering Rhapsody his hand. She cried out in pain at the sudden surge of visions, each worse than the last. Her head started shaking back and forth, as if it would force them to focus. Finally, she dropped his hand, her eyes opening wide in panic.
“Who is fast enough to make it to the clearing?”
“A few of us,” Aiden said with a frown. “How many do we need?”
“Um… there are eight of them. It would look strange not to have just as many.”
Aiden nodded. “Nate, Zach, Serena and I are the only ones who can make it in seconds.”
“No,” Deven spoke up. “You’re not.”
“Can you all go?” Rhapsody asked weakly. “If you don’t get there in two minutes, he’s going to Khrone’s.”
“Fuck!” Everyone in the room screamed and made way for the five fastest to race out the door.
“What’s going on?” Melody asked as she saw them zip past her. She’d just entered with Severus, Draco and Hermione trailing on her heels.
Rhapsody leapt off the desk and placed her hands on Melody’s temple. Melody paled before grabbing Severus’s hand and practically disappearing. Rhapsody turned to give the same vision to Hermione. She and Draco tensed but remained still. They could never get there in time and it would be senseless to leave the other children.
“Stick to the plan,” Draco said hoarsely.
Rhapsody nodded and climbed back on the desk, her knees shaking. “Okay, I’m sure you’re all wondering what you’re doing here. M-my dad was…turned… a week ago. He’s waking tonight, but he won’t be happy about it. It’s up to my mom and Aunt Melody to convince him to stay…rather than be destroyed. As silly as it sounds, you are needed for moral support. No magic will be required from any of you, only your presence. What say you?”
“Why do you need our support?” Matt the half-giant asked.
Rhapsody cleared her throat. “You all have a special kind of magic that balances ours, keeps us calm, keeps us from going off if you will. It’s strange, I know, and we’ll explain it after this. All we ask is that you trust us for just a little while longer. And…if we try to intervene tonight, hold us back.”
“That’s easier said than done,” Zandra blurted out and then blushed.
“Bind us to the ground if you need to,” Rhapsody said softly. “I mean it. No one can interfere and I can’t guarantee that we all have enough control to stay away.”
“Where are we going?” Lizzy asked quietly.
“To our home,” Rhapsody answered. “We’ll wait in the back pasture for dad and his dam to come home by port key. Just in case he still doesn’t have control, we’ll be behind a loop of silver wire. He’s so new that instinct will keep him back.”
“What else do we have to do?” Anastasia asked warily.
“Just watch,” Rhapsody said sadly. “Do you all agree?”
She looked around the room and smiled when everyone nodded. It was only a few minutes later when the rest of their crew came back in toting a very bedraggled Albus. He wasn’t bloody, a good sign, but he looked tired.
“You okay?” Rhapsody asked softly.
Albus nodded and sheepishly ruffled his hair. “They caught me outside the loo. Wasn’t watching where I was walking.”
“And you didn’t blast the lot because…” James asked.
“They had Sanders with them.”
“So the bastard returns,” Draco said darkly.
Albus nodded. “He told them every move to make, said it was revenge.”
“No doubt to punish us for getting away,” Draco sighed. “We’re sorry Albus.”
Albus shrugged. “It’s just one of those things. I’ll be more careful next time.”
“Well, I’m afraid we’re out of time,” Melody said, closing and locking the door behind her before producing the length of rope. “Here’s the key. Everyone grab hold. You’ll be ported to the field in a few moments. There are doppelgangers for those of you who aren’t supposed to be gone tonight. We’ll need to get back before someone tries to engage them.”
Within moments, the entire classroom full of people was transported to the back forty of the Ranch. Alex and Celeste came running out to them, hugging their mates and their children before grouping them in pairs and cordoning off a large circle with silver wire.
“What about Tatyana?” Cadence asked.
“I gave her a second portkey so she can return to the club,” Celeste said. “She’ll remain unharmed.”
“Where is everyone else?” Zandra asked, eyes scanning the field for any sign of the rescued teens.
“They were sent to Hogwarts,” Alex said softly. “They should be along in a few moments.”
“Alright Rhap,” Zach said. “What’s about to go down?”
“Let Melody finish talking to mom first,” Rhapsody hissed and stalked off, trying desperately to stave off her growing apprehension. If this night ended badly, she might lose both her parents and her aunt in one fells swoop.
“You okay?” Deven asked quietly as she passed by.
“Not in any sense of the word,” Rhapsody said, holding her hands together tightly in an attempt to keep them from shaking.
“How bad is this going to be?” Deven said with a frown as he took in her stance.
Rhapsody shook her head sadly. “I don’t know…and that scares the hell out of me.”
“She needs to be held,” Aiden muttered quietly, knowing the hunter could pick it up.
“And the reason you aren’t?” Deven growled.
“It would be very bad,” Aiden said sadly. “I don’t think she can take anymore contact from anyone-”
“Then why say it?” Deven cut in.
“If you’d let me finish,” Aiden snapped. “Anyone…except you.”
“Because she’s blind,” Deven said, trying desperately to piece everything together.
“Yes,” Aiden said simply. “Offer her the comfort…or walk away and let her be.”
Deven pursed his lips in thought for only a moment before grabbing Rhapsody gently by the arm and drawing her into his chest. She seemed to freeze in horror before realizing that it was him and melted, breaking into silent sobs. He simply held her, rubbing her back in soothing circles.
Cadence looked on as tears tracked down her cheeks. Aiden stepped up to her and drew her into a hug. She accepted his offer immediately, leaning heavily on him.
“They look so good,” Cadence sniffled.
“They do,” Aiden said a bit hoarsely.
“You’re time will come,” Cadence whispered.
Aiden merely snorted and held her tightly, knowing she needed the comfort. He watched as the others paired up, albeit a bit reluctantly. There was a whoosh of air and four more people appeared, the teens they had rescued from Khrone’s and Lily and Cecil. They all looked a little scared, which he supposed was par for the course but they quickly joined the group, Jonah in the lead, swinging Zandra up from the ground.
“So that’s the other guy,” Deven whispered.
“You can smell him then?” Rhapsody asked, her voice still quivering.
Deven nodded. “They smell…tainted, all of them, but that bond is unmistakable.”
“They can’t help that,” Rhapsody snapped.
“Perhaps once this is over you can enlighten me,” Deven answered quietly.
“They have the right to keep their experiences a secret,” Rhapsody said softly. “But I can tell you how their condition came to pass.”
The sound of a cell phone ringing caught everyone’s attention. Alex drew the phone from his pocket and answered, speaking softly for a few moments before ending the call. He shook his head sadly, took one look over at Melody who was still speaking in a privacy bubble with Harmony, and cleared his throat.
“Philippe…is not happy. It is all his Dam can do to contain him. She’s called in reinforcements. They will feed him by force and then return him to this field, in the center of this circle. No matter what happens, stay behind the silver…and stay quiet.”
“By force?” Deven asked.
Alex sighed. “It’s not as difficult as it sounds. He can refuse the hunt; he can even refuse orders from his Dam. But if a pack of vampires throws him in a room with a bleeding human, he’ll feed whether he wants to or not.”
“So he’ll kill then,” Deven said darkly.
“No,” Alex said. “They’ll monitor him and pull him off when the human is at his limit. Because there are so many vampires with him, it won’t be difficult at all. They’ll repeat the process until he is full.”
“Sounds barbaric,” Violetta whispered as she clung to Zach.
“Thus the life of a reluctant vampire,” Alex said sadly. “They had to do the same with me. Unfortunately, in that state of mind, there is no reasoning.”
Cadence gasped and buried her head in Aiden’s chest. Rhapsody only shook harder, knowing exactly how her father felt. She’d seen his anger in hundreds of scenarios. It was the one thing that didn’t change.
“We’re ready,” Melody called, dragging Harmony behind her. “Everyone pair up. Remember, you are with your partner because they balance you magically.”
Everyone paired up quietly, Nahuatl nodding in understanding when Cadence paired her with Albus. She explained that she was there to balance, since Albus’s emotions tended to be all over the place. Nahuatl agreed that she could change as quickly as Albus and stood by him serenely, making it a point to overlook his ragged appearance.
“I got this one,” Deven said with a grin when it came down to pairing Jonah with Serena and Aiden with Zandra.
“This isn’t going to be pretty,” Rhapsody groaned.
“Oh, I think Zandra will be a bit more amenable than Serena, at any rate,” Deven said with a snicker and walked over to the four.
Aiden eyed him warily, obviously having overheard the conversation. Serena pointedly ignored him, making it seem like she didn’t even notice. She did though, or she wouldn’t be almost crushing Aiden’s hand. Deven bit back a chuckle and held out his hand to shake Aiden’s.
“I should probably thank you,” Deven started off.
“For?” Aiden asked in surprise.
Deven smiled. “Letting her go.”
Aiden nodded. “She deserved better.”
“So do you,” Deven muttered under his breath while looking at Zandra, smirking when Serena almost choked. “So, you ready to pair up?”
“We’re already paired,” Jonah said gruffly.
“Um…no,” Deven said with a shake of his head. “No siblings are to be paired with each other. Too risky. You guys need to switch.”
Jonah swelled up visibly. “Who are you to-“
“Stop,” Zandra cut over Jonah’s rant. “Deven is right. We should split up.”
“So it’s Deven now, is it?”
Zandra sighed. “Yes Jonah, his name is Deven; Deven who has been nothing but a gentleman to me. Please, let’s just agree not to argue about this. The family needs us.”
“They aren’t my family,” Jonah sneered.
“Well they are mine!” Zandra nearly shouted. “They saved my life and took me in when my own family sold me out. They’ve nursed me back to health and protected me and…and…they voted me in the family. They are my family Jonah. I’m sorry if you can’t accept that.” She turned abruptly to face away from Jonah. “Aiden, where do we stand?”
“We’ll be in between the Potters,” Aiden said softly and offered his arm. He was bursting with pride, as was most of the family.
Deven bent down as they passed and whispered in Zandra’s ear. “Well done little alpha.”
Zandra smiled and nodded her thanks.
“So, that leaves…” Deven let his words hang in the air as he stared at Serena and Jonah.
“Oh that’s just fucking perfect,” Serena hissed. “He’ll let me kill myself.”
“You don’t give yourself enough credit,” Deven said. “You have more self-control than half the girls in your year.”
“But I need more,” Serena sighed. “Just…just bind me right now. I won’t fight.”
Deven chuckled. “You can break them and you know it.”
“What spell did Alex use that night he stuck you to the floor?” Jonah broke in suddenly.
Serena ground her jaw for a moment. “It’s a sticking charm laced with a signature. No one can break it except for the caster.”
“Do you think he’ll teach it to me?” Jonah asked quietly. “I’ll use it if you can’t stay still.”
“I can teach it to you,” Serena snapped and pulled out her wand, handing it to Jonah.
His eyes widened comically as he reached out to take the ebony wand. “Y-you’re giving me your wand?”
“To use for now. Use it against me and I’ll snap you like a fucking twig. I don’t need a wand to hex your nads off.”
Deven chucked. “Yep, you should ask Thomas Gregory if you don’t believe her.”
Serena blushed deep red. “I-you heard about that?”
“Yep,” Deven said merrily. “Best. Revenge. Ever.”
Before Serena could say more, Alex cleared his throat. “They’ll be here in a few minutes. Places everyone.”
Draco and Hermione watched with baited breath as the children took their places around the circle. What an odd assortment they had, but it was heartening to see them all amenable, well…mostly. Serena was quietly teaching Jonah how to bind her with a signature. He’d managed to stick her feet in place so far. They only hoped he got the rest of her because she was quite outspoken.
Not ten minutes later, Tatyana appeared in the circle, an angry Philippe in her grasp. She practically threw him to the ground before giving a nod to Alex and disappearing. When she was clear, Philippe sprang up and charged for Alex, stopping short and hissing angrily at the silver wire he was standing behind.
“Calm down Philippe,” Alex said softly. “You’re making a fool of yourself.”
“I didn’t ask for this!” Philippe growled.
“Neither did I,” Alex said evenly. “But I learned to accept it and even live with it.”
“You’re not living with it now,” Philippe sneered.
Alex crossed his arms. “I lived with it for years Philippe. It was only a twist of fate that I can venture out during the day now. Did you know I still crave blood?”
Philippe fierce scowl turned into a look of bafflement. “You do?”
“I do. You don’t survive off of blood that long and not develop a taste for it. I can still smell it you know. I don’t need it…but I want it. Some days, it takes all I have to resist.”
“Why resist, oh controlled one?”
“Because I can. I want to prove to myself that I am more than my instincts. And I do that every single day I don’t take a sip. I did when I was like you as well. It takes discipline to be a healer.”
“Well, I don’t have it!” Philippe shouted and fell to his knees. “I went after him like a…a-“
“Vampire,” Alex cut him off. “You ate like a vampire, which is what you are. The sooner you accept that, the sooner we can move on.”
“Move on,” Philippe said in a deadly calm voice. “Move on.”
Alex nodded warily. “We still have work to do Philippe. We can’t do it without you.”
“Can’t,” Philippe snorted. “You mean won’t.”
“Okay,” Alex hedged. “We didn’t want to continue without you.”
“So you had me turned into a monster.”
“I did what I had to,” Alex growled. “To keep you here with us.”
“What about what I wanted?” Philippe yelled. “I NEVER wanted this! I’m an inhuman monster!”
“Only if you choose to be,” Alex said softly. “Unless you always thought that about me.”
“It doesn’t matter what I thought,” Philippe said bitterly. “No one cares about what I thought.”
“What about what we thought?” Melody asked, drawing his attention. “Do you not give a damn about your family?”
Philippe turned to her, eyes blazing. “My family would do better if I weren’t a fucking freak of nature.”
Melody cocked her head. “And we’re not? Remember who you’re talking to.”
“I know damned well what you are, and it makes no difference. I’m a FUCKING VAMPIRE.”
“Yes, we’ve covered that,” Melody said dryly. “Care to move on?”
“NO!” Philippe screamed and turned to Harmony. “How could you do this to me?”
Harmony couldn’t answer. She just shook her head and fell to her knees. Silent sobs wracked her body.
“Now you wait just a fucking minute,” Melody hissed. “Who was it that begged Alex, a vampire, to save her any way possible? Who condemned her to a week of burning with nothing to show for it? Who was it, Philippe, that said he didn’t care what she became as long as she was still with you?”
“That’s different,” Philippe hissed.
Melody’s jaw dropped open for a moment or two. “How in the fuck do you figure that?”
“BECAUSE IT WASN’T ME!”
Melody shook her head sadly. “I never figured you for such a selfish bastard. What do you want Philippe? You want to die? I’ll kill you if you ask it. Just say the word.”
“Why would you do that?”
“Because I love you, you fucking asshole. You’re my brother, or… you were. I’m not sure how I feel about you at the moment. Just because you are a vampire doesn’t mean that you are a different person. You’re just have a different diet now.”
“No I don’t,” Philippe said softly. “I would have killed those humans without a second thought.”
“That’s because you are new. The fact that you feel bad about that now must give you some clue. No vampire feels bad about drinking blood. It’s what they are.”
“I’m a monster, an uncontrollable monster.”
“You think so?” Melody asked.
“I know so.”
“Then I’d like to perform an experiment.”
Melody picked Harmony off the ground bridal style and nodded to Alex who magically separated the silver wire. She walked through; making sure it was sealed behind her and marched up to Philippe. The newly awakened vampire backed away as fast and far as he could and she followed him calmly for a while before setting Harmony in the middle of the circle.
“Now then,” Melody said, taking out a tiny silver necklace and placing it on Harmony’s neck. “If you were such a monster, would you avoid her?”
“She was my wife,” Philippe said sadly. “I would never hurt her.”
“WAS?” Harmony screamed.
“I’m dead.” Philippe’s voice was hollow. “Until death do us part.”
“Oh, you just think you can get away so fucking easily then, huh?” Melody huffed.
“Who would want me?”
“It was Harmony who approved your turning you know. Celeste wanted it, but it was her decision. She doesn’t really give a rat’s ass what you are. I imagine you look just as good in a pair of leather pants as you ever did.”
“Stop that,” Philippe growled.
“What? Reminding you that your wife likes you in every way, including the bedroom?”
“STOP THAT!”
“What does she smell like Philippe? I always thought she smelled a little like apricots myself.”
“NO, I won’t.”
“Take a deep breath Philippe,” Melody said, stepping back away from Harmony. “Breathe in your wife. She is still your wife Philippe. Your soul is still whole and inside you, something many people can’t say. You should rejoice that you are still you…and that she still wants you.”
“I’ll kill her,” Philippe said in anguish.
“No,” Melody cooed. “She is yours Philippe. Yours. Close your eyes and smell. It’s your scent on her.”
“No,” Philippe said softly. “I’ll hurt her. I’ll never be what she needs.”
Melody gave a shark-like smile. She had him. “Well, I suppose she could always find another lover. I mean, I’m sure you aren’t the only man with a big cock who looks amazing in leather pants. Maybe he could make her scream too. Maybe he would be better than you.”
“No,” Philippe hissed.
“Well, you just said you’d never be what she needs. We’ll just have to find someone who can be that. Everything you were and are and could be and more. Maybe, after I kill you, she’ll forget all about you and find another man, one who will knock her up. Maybe this time she’ll have boys, big strong ones who look just like their father.”
“Stop it,” Philippe growled low in his throat.
“No,” Melody hissed. “You want to die and leave her here, broken on the ground. You don’t give a shit about her. Let her find someone who does.”
“I do love her damn it!” Philippe yelled. “That’s why I can’t do this! I can’t hide away all day and look her in the face at night and know that…that I wasn’t strong enough.”
“Bullshit,” Melody snapped. “What the fuck does strength have to do with it?”
“I’m the only dead one, aren’t I?”
“Only because the Malfoys are extremely clever.”
Philippe stopped short. “What?”
“They played the crazy card and got the hell out of there…over a day later and not exactly healthy.”
“But they aren’t dead.”
“They’re the exception and you know it.”
“I’m fucking dead!”
“So you don’t have to worry about dying again!” Melody screamed. “Get over it!”
“I can die again,” Philippe said softly. “You said you’d do it.”
“Just smell her Philippe,” Melody sighed. “Smell her and then I’ll do it. I’m tired of arguing with a pathetic excuse for a man…or a vampire.”
Draco scanned the perimeter of the circle. So far, all the mates were keeping the children quiet. Deven had gone so far as to drop to the ground with a sobbing Rhapsody. She’d obviously been silenced and was currently beating the ground with her fists. He was also glad Cadence’s mate was a part giant, because it seemed that it was all Matt could do to hold Cadence still.
Philippe inched over to Harmony, falling to his knees and crawling a few feet. He wasn’t entirely sure of himself. Melody kept a close watch on him but remained still. The necklace would keep him from ripping
Harmony’s throat out, but he could still hurt her on accident. When he finally reached his wife, he took a tentative breath of air, only to gasp and dig his fingers into the ground.
“What does she smell like?” Melody whispered.
“Peach pie,” Philippe croaked. “With whipped cream.”
“You’re favorite,” Melody said with a tiny smile. “Now, with something that smelled that amazing, would you eat it in one gulp or savor it?”
“Savor it,” Philippe said softly. “So rich.”
Melody nodded. “I won’t ask you to take a taste. I’m not that cruel. You don’t have control yet; we all understand that. It’s why she’s wearing that necklace. But you can hold her Philippe. You can touch her without hurting her. You need only prove it to yourself.”
“What if I can’t?”
“I’ll stake you in a heartbeat.”
Philippe nodded and reached out a tentative hand to his wife, wincing when she shuddered under his cool touch. He scooted closer, gathering her still shaking form into his arms. He was stiff, terrified that he’d hurt her. Despite Harmony clutching to him desperately, his face contorted in pain, one bloody tear falling from his eye.
“I can’t do this.”
“What?” Melody asked.
“This! She’s freezing… because of me. I can’t. Just…end this.”
“You mean that,” Melody said sadly. “You don’t even give a shit how she feels.”
“I know how she feels damn it. She’s repulsed.”
“She’s just cold,” Melody snapped. “It takes a little while to get used to the temperature change.”
“I won’t put her through it.”
“But you’ll let her break without you.”
Philippe shook his head and sat Harmony down. “She’s stronger than that.”
“And your girls? Look at them Philippe.”
Philippe looked over towards Rhapsody and Cadence, who were now struggling in ropes against their mates. His breath left him but he steeled himself.
“They’re strong too. They saw this coming.”
“And yet they fight it,” Melody whispered. “Go to them Philippe. Touch them, just one last time.”
Philippe trudged over, broken. He hissed as the silver got closer but brought himself just to the edge, stretching out a hand underneath the strand. Rhapsody and Cadence each clutched to it, spilling tears of joy. They kissed his hand and snuggled it, hoping it wouldn’t be the last time.
“Hunter,” Philippe growled when Deven pulled Rhapsody back.
“Easy Philippe,” Melody said. “He’s not a full hunter. Deven, still think all vampires have no conscience, no control?”
“No,” Deven whispered.
“You still want to go Philippe?”
“Yes,” Philippe said. “The hunter might have faith…but I don’t.”
“I should renege,” Melody hissed. “You unbelievable dickhead. I swear if my sister didn’t love you so much I’d rip you apart.”
“Do it,” Philippe hissed. “I dare you.”
“You’d fight,” Melody said. “You couldn’t help yourself. Vampires have a natural aversion to death. I mean, they avoided it once right?”
“They only avoid crossing,” Philippe said. “But if you want a fight, I’ll give you one.”
“I’ll win,” Melody said, circling around him now. “Because I have two things you don’t.”
“What?”
“Faith…and silver.”
“Then kill me,” Philippe growled.
“Not. Yet.”
“What are you waiting for you coward?”
“COWARD?” Melody screamed. “You think I’m a COWARD? You can look me in the fucking eyes and tell me that I am weak?”
“You are if you can’t end me.”
“That’s not weak, that’s compassionate. But if you want to die, you’ll have to fight for it.”
Philippe bared his fangs, a frightening sight. Melody stepped to the side, her eyes narrowed. She crouched when Philippe did, preparing herself for the next move. This had to be perfect or they were in trouble. Harmony scooted away from the center of the circle, terrified but determined. They would win him back from his despair…or die trying.
Philippe lunged then, instinctively diving when he knew his mate was safe. Melody neatly jumped in the air, pouncing on his back. In the blink of an eye, she had him pinned to the ground, a silver loop around his neck tethering him to the ground. She quickly bound his wrists and ankles, careful not to actually touch them but securing them to the ground just the same. He wouldn’t dare move, not as new as he was.
“What the fuck Melody?” Philippe yelled.
“You’re going to listen, Philippe, and you’ll listen well. We’re not letting you go, not until you realize the consequences of your actions.”
“And how do I know those?” he spat, his body rigid from his bindings.
“Harmony, you first,” Melody whispered.
Philippe’s eyes widened when he saw Harmony kneel beside him, her hands reaching for his temples. “No, don’t you dare!”
“Shut up Philippe,” Melody said gravely. “You’ll only make it harder on her.”
“No, I…I don’t-“
“We really don’t give a fuck what you don’t want,” Melody cut him off. “You are going to accept this gift, regardless.”
“She’ll die!” Philippe screamed.
“You don’t know that.”
“She does!”
“No,” Melody sighed. “She doesn’t. That’s the point.”
Philippe screamed as Harmony chanted the spell to transfer her visions to him. Melody swiftly caught her as she fell back unconscious, carefully laying her back down beside him. Philippe was panting, no doubt visions of horror were running through his head. Melody almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
“What are you doing?” Philippe croaked when Melody kneeled beside him.
“What has to be done. Draco, Hermione, hold him.”
Draco and Hermione grabbed Alex, binding him to the ground with a quick spell before he could protest. He would realize what was happening in a moment. And he would try to stop it. That was the one thing that couldn’t happen. Nothing could interfere.
Melody sighed. “Deven, release the silencing spell on Rhapsody please.” She waited until it was finished. “Rhap, now or never. Speak.”
“Do it,” Rhapsody whimpered, wincing when Philippe and Alex both screamed in horror. “Don’t be afraid daddy. Everything is going to be fine. You’ll see.”
Draco quickly silenced Alex when he started to protest. It killed him to do it, but Rhapsody was right. Everything would be fine. They just had to finish this. He grabbed Hermione tight in his arms, hoping that they had made the right decision. At last he knew exactly how Harmony had felt all those years, dictating the right moves. It was gut wrenching.
Melody took a deep breath and put her hands on Philippe, gritting her teeth against the sharp pain that shot through her. It was a warning, one she was not to going to listen to. She ignored Philippe’s begging and concentrated.
“Alex, I love you…always,” she said softly before she began chanted the spell to transfer her powers.
It didn’t take long before Melody gritted her teeth in pain and then collapsed to the side. She waved her hand weakly, willing the last bit of magic she could summon to release Philippe from his bindings. It wouldn’t be long before their powers combined and he wouldn’t be able to keep from thrashing.
They all watched in horror as Philippe gave a blood curling scream. The visions were on him now. He was seeing every possible angle for every person he’d ever met, and some he hadn’t yet. They ripped at his mind, tortured him to his very soul. The worst ones centered on his wife.
“NO!” Philippe screamed, clawing at his eyes, trying in vain to pull the visions out of his mind. “NO!”
“N-now y-you see,” Melody gasped. She felt her strength draining from her. Fate wasn’t happy. At. All.
“T-take it away,” Philippe pleaded as he crawled over to her with blood streaks running down his face. “Please, take it back. I’ll stay. I can’t handle…please.”
“Deep breath,” Melody whispered. “Calm down. Let them make sense Philippe. You have to understand.”
“I do,” Philippe cried. “I didn’t realize.”
“Take it one step further,” Melody pleaded. “Look for the future Philippe. If you’re staying, you have to help us fight. You have to see the best outcome, see what the fates can’t.”
“You’ll die,” Philippe cried. “I’ve seen it. They’re coming and you’ll die.”
“If it ends this, it’s totally worth it.”
“No,” Philippe whispered as Melody passed out from the pain.
“Focus daddy!” Rhapsody screamed. “Focus! Hurry!”
Philippe closed his eyes, letting the visions of the future fill him, studying every detail. He had to find the answer, had to know what was coming. This was the only way, the only way to save Harmony now. He could feel the Fates’ anger, their hostility. They were coming and he wasn’t ready yet. Thunder clapped, deafening everyone in the pasture.
They had arrived.
