AN: A short chapter to describe the Marauders first foray into the forest as a pack. I hope the odd way I've written this doesn't confuse you but in Canon its said that Animagi don't think like humans and so I wanted to distinguish this by writing those scenes differently and of course animals won't think of things like we do so the names of things are different. Please enjoy.
Chapter Thirty: Vincula Sarcina (Bonds of the Pack)
The trees creaked and James could hear the familiar noises of animals. He shifted from one foot to another as he waited. Then he heard a scuffling from between the roots of the Whomping Willow. He smiled as he saw Padfoot emerge and shake himself from head to tail, he sprayed detritus everywhere and turned to face James, he bounded over and barked sharply. James’ eyes moved to the entrance of the tunnel and saw the largest wolf he had ever seen emerge. “Shit.” He muttered and changed his form, each time he did it it was easier. He still found it very odd to go from human thought patterns to that of an animal, even though he could distinguish a lot more in Animal form than other animals his thoughts were simplified along with his emotions.
Padfoot barked at HUMAN, he ran over resisting the sudden urge to lick and nip at HUMAN’s hands. HUMAN swore and changed his form. He now wore the skin of LARGE NOT-PREY. LARGE NOT-PREY had a set of very intimidating antlers which Padfoot was careful to avoid as LARGE NOT-PREY bent to sniff at him in greeting. Padfoot licked LARGE NOT-PREY’s nose making him snort hot air on his fur. His ears twitched as he paused to listen to the sounds around him, he could hear the soft call of a FEATHERY FLYING-PREY. But he knew he couldn’t eat them, they were hard to catch and the HUMAN inside him knew that FEATHERY FLYING-PREY brought messages to other HUMAN’s. He cocked his head to the side and scented the air, it was fresh and heavy with a range of wonderful scents. He closed his eyes until he smelt BIG DOG ANIMAL stalking up behind him, turning he barked sharply as BIG DOG ANIMAL spotted LARGE NOT-PREY.
WOLF liked the scent of the massive PREY standing before him, he eyed it from a safe distance, instinct telling him to be aware of those huge bones sticking from its head. PREY seemed uneasy, it shifted where it stood and lowered it’s head. WOLF growled deep in it’s throat and began stalking forward, he could smell its fear but there were other things mixed into that addictive scent. WOLF liked fear, but he didn’t like the fact that PREY wasn’t fleeing. Every animal should fear WOLF. There was something not right about the situation. He swung his head to the side and saw DOG approaching him, his head lowered as he growled a warning. Like a call from a distant pack member WOLF saw flickers of images, PINK THINGS ON TWO LEGS sitting in a room and laughing. PINK THINGS ON TWO LEGS embracing. WOLF sensed a sudden, undeniable strong connection to these PINK THINGS ON TWO LEGS and with that connection came a profound connection to the PREY WITH BONES ON HEAD and DOG. He growled and turned to look at DOG who was watching him from eyes that stirred another flood of random images, WOLF didn’t like those images. They confused him but with them came an up-rush of affection and the feeling of connection grew stronger until he realised with a jolt that around him were not PREY and DOG but PACK. And he knew that PACK was good. PACK was warm and loving and gentle. PACK hunted together in tall trees and PACK would snuggle up together and sleep. PACK was his and he was PACKs. All thoughts of attacking LARGE PREY went out of his head and he approached slowly, his massive paws treading the ground and leaving prints in the springy grass. He sniffed at LARGE PREY’s ears and nose, he was sniffed back and LARGE PREY lifted his head and stood there proudly. WOLF relaxed and turned to DOG, he liked DOG. DOG was easy to understand, so he sat down and threw his huge head back.
Padfoot watched BIG DOG ANIMAL sit and lift his head, then he let out a long, drawn out howl that made Padfoot quiver. The sound seemed to wake something within him, the HUMAN inside him was drowned out as he threw his own head back and howled along with BIG DOG ANIMAL. Their howls grew, falling away again only to be renewed. They howled together for a while before BIG DOG ANIMAL shook his head and stood up, he walked silently over to Padfoot and sniffed before running off into the darkness of the tree.
WOLF was hungry, he wanted to hunt. He could hear PACK running behind him and his blood sang with DOG-WOLF song. He was confused as to why LARGE NOT-PREY hadn’t joined in but he supposed that was ok, he liked the sound his voice made with DOG. He ran in long, graceful strides, leaping over rocks and roots and listening for PACK behind him. The sounds of fellow paws and sharp hooves excited him and he howled again. His song mixed with DOG’s, they were different but they seemed beautiful to him none the less.
As Padfoot ran with what he now knew to be WOLF he felt the wolf-song sing through his veins, his claws clattered over a stone as he ran and his tongue lolled from his jaws. He was happy, he liked the feeling of running with what he now knew as PACK. He was picking up a lot of new and interesting things from WOLF. WOLF had lots of interesting things to share with Padfoot and he liked that, there was so much he needed to learn after all, he was only a puppy and relatively new to the world. Even though he had HUMAN’s memories and sometimes thoughts, he didn’t know much about being DOG. He was running mostly on instinct. WOLF could teach him more.
Prongs was a little skittish around two such large HUNTER’s but the HUMAN in him knew that these were FREIND not ENEMY. He let the HUMAN’s memories and thoughts give him confidence and he ran alongside BLACK HUNTER. GREY HUNTER was in the lead and Prongs wasn’t entirely sure where they were going, he had to fight with his instinct of FLEE or FIGHT. He briefly wandered where FAT RODANT was, he remembered FAT ROANT going into the hole in the tree with BLACK HUNTER but he never came out again. Prongs gave a mental shrug and lowered his head as he increased his speed to catch up with BLACK HUNTER.
WOLF caught the scent of something, his nostrils flared and he growled to alert PACK. He continued to run, feet practically gliding over the forest floor. He heard PACK catching up to him, DOG moved to his left side and LARGE NOT-PREY his right. They fanned out but he could sense the confusion coming from LARGE NOT-PREY, he had to ignore it though he had a FLUFFY HOPPER to catch.
DOG saw it streak across the ground, its white flurry tail bobbing as it ran, but he knew it wouldn’t live. He waited for WOLF to signal him with his tail, when he did he moved further away so he was scaring the FLUFFY HOPPER towards WOLF. WOLF manoeuvred himself so he was coming around to cut the FLUFFY HOPPER off. With one sniff Padfoot smelt that the FLUFFY HOPPER was female, she had just had babies too and that she was scared. The scent of fear blocked out even the HUMAN inside him as it tried to prevent him from catching the FLUFFY HOPPER.
WOLF opened his jaws, his sharp teeth glinting beneath the light of the full moon. The FLUFFY HOPPER dived in front of him and with a jerk of his head he snapped its neck. Dropping FOOD to the floor he bent his head, his jaw covered in blood as he sniffed the FOOD. He salivated he was so hungry.
Padfoot inched closer and sniffed FOOD curiously, he moved to take a bite from FOOD but WOLF turned into PACK LEADER and snapped at him. Padfoot backed off rapidly, his head low and a whine escaping him. PACK LEADER crouched over FOOD and growled menacingly revealing a set of huge bloody teeth and pink gums. Padfoot understood and he gave PACK LEADER space to eat first as he lay down and rested his head on his paws, he huffed and prepared himself for a wait.
Prongs smelt the blood and felt a brief surge of terror, he snorted and skittered away from the two HUNTERS. GREY HUNTER growled and snapped viciously at BLACK HUNTER who backed off quickly from GRASS EATER. With once sniff Prongs could tell that GRASS EATER was dead. He knew that he too was a GRASS EATER and he didn’t like the scent of blood that clung to the small clearing where GREY HUNTER ate. He hated the noise of crunching bone and squishing meat. He was about to turn and run when the HUMAN sent him an image of BLACK HUNTER and FREIND. He snorted again but held still, his body quivering as sweat steamed from his shiny coat. He had enjoyed the run he supposed, he just didn’t like to see the dead GRASS EATER.
Finally PACK LEADER licked his chops and stood up, he moved away from FOOD and allowed Padfoot to slink closer. Padfoot glanced at him nervously but was relieved to see him turn back into WOLF as he sat down and curled his fluffy tail around his feet, Padfoot wagged his tail happily and began eating. HUMAN cringed as blood filled his mouth, his teeth crunched bone as he devoured FOOD happily. He ignored HUMAN, HUMAN wasn’t in charge now WOLF was.
Once DOG had finished FOOD, WOLF rose and moved to him sniffing his face. He began licking him clean, he huffed in way that resembled laughter; Cubs were so messy. He pinned DOG down and began licking his ears, his muzzle and eyes making sure he was thoroughly cleaned before PACK moved on again. Once satisfied he lifted his paw off of DOG who shook himself off and began returning the favour. DOG cleaned him but didn’t pin him, WOLF wouldn’t have liked that. He allowed the cleaning and enjoyed it when DOG nibbled his ears and the ruff of fur around his neck, he yawned and batted DOG with a giant paw. DOG yipped happily and rolled over, he exposed his belly and wagged his tail. WOLF smiled in the only way he could, by revealing his impressive and darkly dangerous teeth. He understood that he was different, some internal instinct told him he was not a normal WOLF, he was something else entirely. He wasn’t sure what that could mean for him in the future but for now he was content to bash DOG around in play. Anything was easier than remembering the terrible feelings of rage and that dull undercurrent of fear that wasn’t entirely his own. There were many emotions like that, now as he pushed DOG over with his nose and nipped at his little ears he could feel an intense feeling of warmth and utter devotion, but it seemed to have some other source he was only half aware of. There was a deep part of WOLF that remained a mystery to him. He remembered vaguely being full of an uncontrollable fury and intense desire to rip and tear at anything and everything, he remembered that once, not so long ago, he had woken in great pain. In fact, each time he woke he was in incredible pain. He didn’t like that. Pain was a bad thing. Pain was weakness. He bit down hard on DOG’s ear earning himself a squeal, DOG struggled but WOLF was distracted. He didn’t feel right, there was that uncontrollable fury again and that undercurrent of terror. He could hear something, like the distant call of something familiar; No! No don’t hurt them! He paused and sniffed the air, his amber eyes moving around their quiet little clearing. He could hear NOT PREY moving to his right, he swung his head around and saw those HEAD-BONES lowered in a threatening display, he saw a hoof scraping the ground as NOT PREY snorted angrily.
Padfoot’s ear hurt where WOLF had bitten him, he knew he was bleeding as he could smell it. He tried to break free of WOLF’s paws but he was growled at. He lay still trembling slightly with his ears pressed flat against his head and his tail lying in the dirt.
WOLF looked back down at DOG. He got the feeling of fear again, fear that wasn’t his own...what did WOLF have to fear? He sniffed at DOG’s face, at the ear he had damaged and he licked the blood. DOG tasted like PREY, but not like PREY. It was odd indeed. He released DOG and rolled his large furry shoulders as he stalked away to the other side of the clearing.
Padfoot dragged himself to his feet with a small whimper, he slunk over to WOLF and sniffed at his muzzle. WOLF’s energy was fluctuating between confusion and anger, he turned his head away and huffed. Padfoot whimpered again before curling up and tucking his nose under his tail.
Prongs stalked the edge of the glade as BLACK HUNTER curled up by the side of GREY HUNTER, he was still feeling edgy, and was finding settling very difficult. He knew BLACK HUNTER as FRIEND but was wary of GREY HUNTER. GREY HUNTER was an unknown and not yet to be trusted. Finally GREY HUNTER sighed and yawned, his face turned to the sky and Prongs noticed that the moon was hanging low on the horizon.
WOLF always felt sleepy when the moon set, he didn’t know why he never saw SUN. He knew what SUN was, foggy, half formed images told him it was a yellow disk in a blue sky. He had never seen SUN and wandered if he ever would as he curled up around DOG and gave him one last affectionate little nip before letting his eyes close. He stayed awake for a while and waited for NOT PREY to join them, but apparently NOT PREY was still too nervous.
The moon set behind the horizon as the sky began to fill with light, it rose slowly bathing the little glade in pinks and fiery colours. The sun revealed three boys all curled around each other, one of them was naked, all of them were smiling in their sleep.
