Hermione felt…warm. That was odd, especially since the biting cold had been her constant companion for the past… however long they’d been stuck in the room. Was she dead? She wiggled her fingers, coming in contact with a sheet or blanket of some sort. Huh, maybe she was. She very slowly opened her eyes, only to slam them back shut. Gosh it was bright, like the sun was shining on her face. It took her a few tries to open them again.
A white room appeared, looking very much like the hospital wing. What was the room on about now? Was it going to predict her death again? She tried to sit up, finding it very difficult. No food, very little water, and the coldness in her bones had done a number on my body. She looked around and saw only curtains… just like the hospital wing. She turned to wake Draco up and realized he wasn’t there. Where was he?
“Draco?”
No answer. This couldn’t be good. He wasn’t dead was he? No, he couldn’t be. He’d been with her the whole time. In fact, she’d been… Her whole face heated up at her last memory. It hadn’t been a particularly wild moment, but it was perfect and it staved off the cold for a little while. Maybe the room was showing them some mercy because of it. But where was he?
“DRACO!”
A groan sounded to her left and she clumsily reached out for the curtains. They were too far away and she didn’t quite have the strength to get out of bed just yet. She decided to call to him again.
“Draco, is that you?”
“Hermione?”
Draco rubbed his eyes and tried to focus in the overwhelming brightness of this new scenario the room laid out for them. He was in a bed or a cot of some kind and he was warm…and clothed? He pulled at the familiar hospital robes and sighed. At least they had clothes now. What was the room up to… and where was Hermione calling him from? She’d been in his arms, hell he’d been inside her the last he remembered.
“Draco!” Hermione cried in relief. “I was worried for a minute.”
“What tricks do you think we’re in store for this time?” he asked tiredly.
“Dunno,” she murmured. “Where are you?”
“In a cot I think. I’ve got on hospital robes.”
Hermione looked down and finally noticed that she was no longer nude. “Me too.”
“Hold on. Keep talking and I’ll come to you,” Draco said, slipping out of the bed and ending up in a heap on the floor.
Damn he was weak. He crawled in the direction of her voice. She was reciting Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration and it made him chuckle. Only Hermione would spout facts while he was trying to find her. After a few minutes, a tussle with a couple of curtains, and a few breaks to stop for rest, he found her, hanging off the side of the bed in his direction. It took everything they both had for him to climb up beside her. The cot was small, but they were used to being pressed tightly against each other now.
“Never thought I’d miss clothes so much,” Draco muttered, burying his hands in Hermione’s sleeves. He had to touch her, just to make sure she was still with him.
“I know what you mean,” she sighed, snuggling into his chest. “Do you think the room was pleased?”
“We’re warm… we have clothes. I’d say it was a start.”
“Poppy, they’re awake!” Snape’s words rang clearly across the room.
“Wonder who he’s talking about,” Hermione said quietly.
“The real question I’m wondering is if this is a memory or a nightmare,” Draco breathed.
Hermione started trembling. “I couldn’t stand another nightmare.”
The curtain flew open, admitting Snape looking like himself in the present. He was peering at them intently, searching for some unknown problem. What was he looking for?
“He looks well,” Hermione said quietly. “It can’t be a nightmare.”
“Who is he looking at though?” Draco’s brows furrowed in thought. They couldn’t see anyone else around. “You don’t think… they couldn’t be hurt.”
“No, they went into hiding,” Hermione said, catching his train of thought. “Unless this is earlier. I wonder if he ever found them.”
“Found who?” Snape hissed.
Draco and Hermione looked at each other in shock before turning to the now angry Potion’s Master. “You can hear us?”
Snape’s anger turned to confusion. “Of course I can bloody well hear you. Do you think me deaf?”
“Oh Gods. Did the room let you in?” Hermione asked in excitement. Maybe they had pleased the room.
Snape’s face dawned in understanding. “You aren’t in the room any longer. It opened last night. Don’t you remember?”
The two looked at each other, trying to spark some kind of memory. But no. All they could remember was falling asleep in each other’s arms, utterly spent and convinced that they would die in the room.
“I suppose not,” Snape continued. “Suffice it to say, after the room locked down and stopped permitting Dobby to enter, everyone grew rather worried. I was called back to enter but the room stopped my advances as well. I heard… screams… and then they stopped and the room opened. How long have you been without food and clothing?”
“Don’t know,” Draco said. “The day after boxing day. What day is it?”
“It’s January third,” Snape said in shock. “You’ve been like this that long?”
Hermione nodded. “We made the room angry.”
“What did it do?” Snape asked, his head cocked.
The two teens looked at each other. Dare they utter a word of what they saw? The room had obviously wanted them to see those horrible scenes. Should they break its confidence? It was part of the castle. Would the castle take revenge on them? Then there was what they’d seen of Snape’s life. The vampire was sure to kill them if they breathed a word of it. No. It was better to keep it a secret. They shook their heads, indicating that they would not be divulging that information.
“Ah, the lovebirds are awake,” a deep voice said. A man entered, a chilling smile on his face. His hair was sandy brown with dark eyes that had a glint in them. He looked a bit like Yardley Platt. He raised his wand, saying he’d like to look them over in a very familiar deep voice, one that they had heard quite recently. Oh gods, it was the voice from the forest, the one determined to end them.
Hermione was unable to contain her scream, scrambling backwards away from the man who she’d seen try to kill her. Draco rolled and took her with him, falling to the floor and breaking her fall. They scrambled backwards and out of the curtained space, crawling for the far wall. They were too weak to run but they had to get away from him. He was going to murder them!
“What the devil?” the man asked.
“You stay the fuck away from us,” Draco growled, casting a wandless shield around them and placing himself in front of Hermione. There was no way that bastard would get them. They weren’t going to go without a fight this time.
“Easy,” Snape said, realizing that the two teens were very clearly frightened. “Emmanuel is a Healer. No one is trying to harm you.”
“The hell he isn’t,” Draco yelled. “He wants to sacrifice us!”
Snape’s eyebrows rose and he spun around. The man paled and ran out the door. Snape made to give chase but was clearly torn between seeing to the teens and catching the Healer. He shook his head and turned to Draco.
“What is going on?”
Draco breathed deeply to calm himself and held Hermione close. “Just trust us. He is very bad news.”
AN: Ta-daa! They're out! Why did the room let them out? Guess we'll figure that one out later. Maybe it didn't want them to miss anymore classes. As always, thanks to everyone for your excellent reviews. I'm glad you're all hooked. I am too. In fact, I stopped writing on this one just so I didn't have to write the ending. Guess I'll have to start again soon. I'm only about ten chapters ahead, and a few more from the end. Damn. Anyway, keep those reviews coming and let me know how I'm doing. Until next time... love you guys.
