Chapter 30:
GAH! MY EYES!
For once since this whole mess started, Sirius was pleased. No, not with the nightmare playing out, but that there was progress in dealing with at least parts of it. That was more than he expected earlier in the day.
First and foremost, Cissy wasn't looking to hex anyone. In fact, he doubted that she was in any shape to do anything with her wand other than hold it, and even that was iffy. Whatever was in that Calming Draught Snape gave her knocked her senseless. Before she wandered out of the house, she was smiling, humming and generally looking like nothing in the world would bother her as she was that 'calm'. Hell, he was sure that whatever calamity might happen wouldn't faze her in the least she was so out of it. She knew the situation, as they had all explained it to her, then she had a good blowup over it, once more threatening everyone though not actually doing anything, a plus. After their assurances they were doing all they could, including the tidbit that this version of Voldemort was looking into a solution, she calmed down with the help of whatever it was Snape gave her. He wasn't all that sure what would happen after whatever it was he gave her wore off, but for now it was calm on that front. Perfect.Secondly, Draco was under some kind of control. Apparently, Snape was as fed up as he was when it came to this nightmare. So, he had taken drastic measures. Oh, Draco was still in the house, but Snape had given him something that knocked him out cold. Sirius wasn't sure what it was, but the snarling Potions Master mentioned something about him being out for 24 hours from it. The man also vowed that until they found a solution, he was going to keep right on giving it to him. Though it was a bit on the extreme side, Sirius could understand why as he was about at the end of what he could take himself, so he wasn't saying a damned word.Thirdly, this version of Voldemort was caught up with all that was going on and vowing to help. From what Lucius said, he was already looking into solutions. Remus and Snape were going to go see him that afternoon to get what he has on the mess. The consensus was already not to involve Albus and for Draco to stay put until such time as they found something. Snape was vowing he was staying knocked out until then. Finally, it was looking like a solution was in sight. Snape told him this version of Voldemort had at least something for the symptoms. That he planned to get. If they got that far, the Potions Master said they could find something. It was just a matter of time. Good! What they were doing was taking samples of the psychoferret's fur with them so this version of Voldemort could use it to find just what worked. While he hoped this would end quickly, he wasn't going to count on it. He could handle it, though, as long as it looked like it would end.Looking across the table at Remus and Snape, who were putting together everything they found so far in preparation for leaving, Sirius asked, “What's the plan here? Do you know?”“I'm not sure,” Severus gruffed, sipping his tea and longing for a generous dollop of firewhiskey in it. Hell, he wanted what he gave Narcissa! It wasn't something he pulled out much, but the situation called for it so he went with what he knew worked. That state she was in was what he longed to reach. He couldn't, though. He had to be able to think. To do that, he had to stay coherent. “We're going to play it by ear when we get there. That's all I know. If he says he has something, he does. Let me see what he has. I'm all for just keeping Draco in the state he is now. That and making sure Narcissa stays 'calmed' to the eyeballs until we get this sorted.”Though loath to say it, as he loved his son dearly, Lucius shook his head then imparted, quietly, “Draco needs to stay just how he is until we get the solution. It's unsavory and I don't like it, but this is growing worse. And he's setting off more than just Harry. Impress that on Tom when you get there. I vote he stays just how he is.”“So do I,” Harry chimed in, shivering. Shaking his own head, he admitted, “I can't take much more.”Seeing Sirius nod in agreement as well, Remus told everyone, “We'll pass that along. It's the best solution we've found so far. The chance of making this all the worse with something we aren't sure works is too great.” Sighing, he stood then said, “I need to gather a couple items. Give me a few minutes.” Then he headed out, planning to go to his rooms and grab what he needed.“I'll go get samples of the ferret's fur. That should be easy enough as there is plenty in their cages. Once Lupin finishes and we are sure we have everything, we'll go tend to this,” Snape said, tone slightly weary. This had been a long, drawn out nightmare he just wanted to end as quickly as possible. Though he didn't like the rest of the insanity, he could deal with it better than this. Standing, he swept out to tend to that chore quickly.“And, since I'm not in fear of Draco finding me, I'm going to the loo, alone,” Harry grinned, standing and heading that way with Kreacher trailing along.Chuckling at that, shaking his head, Sirius watched his godson go. Sipping his drink, he was trying to think what they could do that night to have a bit of fun. This whole situation had been stressful enough that they needed to blow off some steam. After a couple of minutes, he said, “I vote we grab a huge ball then, when everyone gets back, we hop in the pool and play a game of some kind. That should help. I get there is a lot to work with here, but we need something to help us relax. A couple hours off from it won't hurt anything.”Not seeing a downside to this, Lucius nodded, “We'll do something. Either that, or we can all retire to the hot tub and just do the best we can to wind down slightly. After all, the more you reset your dials, the better you're going to think of a solution you might not have seen while stressed.”“We'll get with everyone when they get back and see what they want to do. Maybe they have other ideas of a diversion we would all enjoy. That and I vote we order out for supper, something we can eat outside. That should make for a nice atmosphere.” Sirius suggested. He was about to go on to see about arranging that as he was sure Snape and Remus wouldn't object when a stammering Harry came flying in at top speed. Wondering what happened, he stood but didn't get anywhere when Harry once more shot up under the back of his robes and climbed his back, clinging to him the way a koala did to a tree. Thankfully, though, this time his godson didn't wrap his arms around his throat! “What happened?” He asked, concerned, holding his godson so he didn't fall, and feeling him shake. Already, a myriad of problems came to mind, none of them good, as to the cause of this.“Gah! MY EYES!” Harry managed to stammer out, clinging tightly to Sirius, shaking madly.Trying not to laugh or grin, figuring this would be good, Sirius asked again, “What happened?”“I saw Snape and Remus kissing,” Harry moaned, resting his forehead on the back of Sirius' shoulder, clinging to him. “I'm traumatized for life! You're helping me find a therapist, all there is to it! That image is burned into my brain forever!” Shuddering violently, he said, “Merlin's wedgied y-fronts, I need to pry out my eyes and scrub them then remove my brain and boil it to get rid of the images! Even then, I'm not sure it'll work!”Body beginning to shake from suppressed laughter, seeing Lucius looking entirely amused, Sirius said, voice uneven, “You're fine. We'll find something to distract you. Come out and settle down. You can help us figure out what we want for supper.”“Nope, not coming out. I refuse,” Harry said, clinging to him. “I just can't take anymore, all there is to it!” And he meant it! That might be a small thing to see, though traumatizing, but he was at the end of what he could take. The insanity—yeah, he was done and about to have a breakdown of some kind.Body shaking harder, grin growing, Sirius put his hands under Harry's legs to keep him in place then sat down. Seeing Lucius stand, mentioning something about seeing Remus and Severus off, something he assumed was to give them time alone for him to coax Harry out, Sirius told his godson, “You're fine. Come out and I'll send an elf for a butterbeer for you.”“So not coming out,” Harry reiterated, arms wrapped around him. He refused to even poke his head out the neck hole of Sirius' robes to glance around.“Harry, you need to be able to breathe. That has to be hard with your head in my robes,” Sirius told him, changing tracks, finding this funnier all the time. He got it, he really did. Harry was probably very close to the end of the stress he could deal with over so much. It was just manifesting in this way, nothing more. Which meant he had to figure out the right way to handle the situation and calm him down. Sending an elf for a butterbeer, he sat it down on the table, hoping that would coax Harry to at least poke his head out.“I'm good there,” Harry said, not poking his head out. Reaching out through the gap between the buttons on the front of Sirius' robes, he managed to snag the butterbeer and pull it back in without spilling any. Though the position was awkward, he was able to take a sip of it. Holding Sirius close with one arm and settling down so he didn't fall in some way, thus taking Sirius with him. “I think I'll stay here the rest of the night. No one is likely to mess with me or try to make me nuts if I'm here.”Unable to stop himself, Sirius began to chuckle, body shaking even harder as he did. Rubbing a hand over his face, he said, “Harry, really, we're good. You can come out. I swear, I'll take on anyone that tries to make this worse.”“Yeah, well, that's not worked well to this point either as you keep getting drawn in too. Not to mention this keeps getting worse as time goes on. So not coming out until we're safely locked in our room tonight. In fact, I think I might decide to live there as I'm done. Other than going out for therapy appointments, that is.” Harry said, curling up as tight as he could to Sirius' back.Leaning forward, resting his elbows on the table, putting his head in his hands, Sirius was desperately trying not to have a laughing fit over this. It was right hilarious, all there was to it. Shaking his head, though not lifting it, he wasn't sure what to do to deal with this situation. And it was fucking hilarious. Running through all the nightmarish insanity that had pranced through the house since the bond, coupled with the stress brought on by what was involved with the bond itself, Lucius, and the way he was, he got it. He really did. Harry hadn't developed the coping skills to take on so much of it yet, leading to this. After a couple of minutes, he sighed, thinking he had something that could at least get Harry out of his robes, he said, “Hang on tight, we're going up to our room. After that, we'll talk this through and see what we can manage.”“Our room is perfect,” Harry nodded, holding securely to Sirius with one arm and gripping the butterbeer firmly with the other hand so it didn't spill while his legs tightened their hold on his godfather. “No one else gets in and no ferrets,” he added once he did.“My word,” Sirius said, unable to stop grinning. Grabbing his wand, he tapped it on Harry's head to make him lighter, then stood, making sure his hands were under his legs. After managing to get them over the bench and stand properly, he began to make his way towards their room. As he walked, he said, “We're trying to think of something to do tonight so we can all relax. I thought ordering out and sitting outside would be part of it. Then mucking about in the pool. Any ideas of what you would like to do?” That was something he thought might help and would get Harry focused elsewhere.“No thanks. So not leaving our room,” Harry told him, still not poking his head out. He vowed he was staying right where he was until he was within the safe confines of their room. All there was to it.Grinning again, Sirius shook his head. “Harry, you can't stay locked in our room. It was making you mental when you had to do that. This will be worse.”“I think I'll take that kind of barmy over this kind,” Harry sighed, liking how it felt to cling to Sirius. He felt safe here. No, he knew it wasn't as good as in their room, but this felt great and he wanted to hold onto his godfather for a while in some way.Okay, Harry wasn't going to make it easy on him Sirius realized. That just meant it was going to take more work. He would manage. Keeping a soothing tone as he walked, he talked to Harry, though it didn't appear he was getting anywhere with it. As he did, he wondered if it might not be a good idea for him to give Harry something calming so he could reason with him. No, not a draught of some kind, but maybe get his cup and give him a few drinks. Then he might manage to get a bit further with this.
Lying on their bed, Sirius was holding Harry close. While he hadn't managed to get Harry to leave their room yet, he had gotten him out from under his robes and talking a little. That helped, it really did. What it gave him was the reasons for this. As expected, it was just the last of what Harry could deal with at the moment. He was sure that once Harry calmed down, his dials reset slightly and he had some time, things would go back to normal. That was something Sirius could handle.
On the upside, though, he managed to get out of his godson that he liked touching him and that it helped. That was great! It also meant that the whole bit was moving in the right direction as Harry wasn't 'freaking out' about some of it anymore. Perfect. He was sure, with what he and Lucius felt from the bond when it came to dealing with Draco, that it had activated something, meaning that it was going to push for more. What that might be, he didn't know, but assumed that it was something to do with areas that Harry was having issues with. So, he needed to get in a better place where he could handle it. That and he had to make sure the great pervert stopped his shite so there wasn't a setback there and Harry didn't keep freaking over it.Stroking Harry's head, Sirius kissed him on top of it. “Feeling a tad better?” He asked.Clutching onto his godfather tightly, Harry nodded. “Oh yeah, a lot.” Quietly, he admitted, in all seriousness, “I just need a break. I really do. This has been one thing after another and I can't take much more, Sirius. I've adapted the best I can, but it just keeps getting pushed further.”Thinking that over, Sirius then gave a slow nod. “You're right,” he admitted. “I also agree you've done quite well in dealing. We all have our ways of doing that. Mine's my temper, I admit it.” Giving Harry a gentle squeeze, he said, “I think we need to work out something so we can find a way to lower the stress levels when it gets too bad. For both of us. I know we're about to solve one problem, or at the very least start to, but we both know that once we get rid of one, we have others to deal with. So, let's think of something for the both of us. Any idea what helps you or what you want to do?” Stopping, he waited to see if there was something Harry knew that helped. It was his assumption it would be something physical, like going out and flying or a bit like that. Hell, that's what had always worked for him and it might be something that would in this nightmare as well.Brow furrowed as he contemplated that, Harry wasn't sure if he wanted to admit to the one thing he did think would help. It was hard to do that, honestly, even with Sirius. However, as he thought about all that happened, coupled in with how Sirius was with him, he decided to give it up. After all, Sirius wouldn't poke fun. Quietly, voice just above a whisper, he said, “This. It helps. I think Lucius is onto something, because you make a most excellent teddy bear. I promise not to drool and cling so hard you can't move.”Looking down at his godson, Sirius smiled. Giving him a squeeze, he said, “We can easily do this. As much as you like of it, too.” Lowering his voice, he admitted, “It calms me down as well. I also think, from what we're feeling, that it does the same for Lucius as well. That's probably why he was drawn into this room when it was bad.” Chuckling, he added, “And I don't mind being your teddy bear. You're not likely to do what he does when it comes to that.”Pressing tighter to his godfather, Harry gave him a squeeze. “My Sirius bear,” he said softly, chuckling. It was a funny nickname, but fit. Sirius gave him comfort in the same way a favorite stuffed toy gave reassurance to children. That made everything much easier on him. And it wasn't something that was overly—whatever. Just a small thing he liked.“Yup, your teddy bear,” Sirius told him with a smile, squeezing him back. “While I say we all do need a night off to have some fun and forget what's going on for a while, just something simple like I suggested earlier, let's make it tomorrow night. I don't know what Snape and Remus are going to come back with that we might have to give a hand for, so we'll plan for it later. For now, we'll stay like this. It's helping both of us, honestly.”Nodding, Harry sighed then said, tone weary, “I think I want a nap. It's been a long day. Well, maybe more than a nap. I'm just exhausted.”“Sleep then,” Sirius told him softly, rubbing his back. “As much and long as you want. It'll only help reset things.” Trying to add some levity to this, he grinned, “And you're sure to be tired after all that running you did! I know I am.”“True!” Harry chuckled. “That's more exercise than I've gotten in a long time. It was enough to really wear you out.” Snuggling in closer to Sirius, he sighed. This was good and it would help.
Slipping into Sirius' room before dinner, Lucius wanted to check on the situation. Sirius had sent word via an elf that he and Harry weren't coming down. As Severus and Remus weren't back, he was wondering what was being done about dinner and didn't want to dine alone. He hoped that Sirius had managed to get Harry calmed down slightly or, at the very least, out from under his robes.
Looking at the bed, seeing Sirius glance at him, though still holding the sleeping Harry, he asked, “All is well?” He assumed so as Harry had calmed down enough to sleep.“We're good,” Sirius told him, keeping his voice down and stroking the sleeping Harry's head. “I think he'll probably be out for the rest of the night, honestly. He just needs some sleep to reset, nothing more.”Coming over and sitting down on the edge of the bed, Lucius looked at Harry, who was even clinging to Sirius in his sleep. “Is he doing better?” He asked, assuming he was, but wanted confirmation.“We talked for a while and he calmed down. I think he was just at the end of what he could deal with, nothing more. This is how he dealt with it. The kiss just set it off. We'll be good come tomorrow,” Sirius said, softly, still holding Harry and stroking his head. “What we were planning tonight—I think it's best to hold off until tomorrow.”“As Severus and Remus aren't back yet, I agree. Let Harry sleep. It'll do him good.” Lucius told him, standing. “I'll have the elves send you up a plate. And ensure they know to be alert for a meal for Harry in the middle of the night.” Seeing Sirius nod, he swept out to go check on his own son. Though Draco was sleeping, he still wanted to check on him.Watching Lucius go, Sirius shook his head. The man had actually not done or said anything remotely sexual. That was a first! He wasn't counting on it continuing, of course, but he assumed that the 'excitement' of the day had gotten to him as well. Not to mention the sheer terror of Cissy going after him full bore. That was enough to set anyone in their right mind off their normal behavior for a time. And he was damned sure that the man would probably be having nightmares about what she had wanted to do to him as well. After all, Lucius probably knew Cissy better than any of them and had been on the wrong side of her wand plenty of times since they got married, so he knew to a greater degree what she was capable of.Shutting his eyes with a sigh, he curled up tighter around Harry, holding him close. Honestly? He wasn't hungry himself and thought some extra sleep would do him good as well. His temper had been close to the surface and probably worse than normal because of the insanity. This might help him as well. Wrapping tighter around Harry, he muttered, though he doubted his godson could hear him, “I have you and you're safe. Sleep well, Harry.” Hearing his godson mumble something in his sleep and give him a squeeze, Sirius relaxed again. Alright, he didn't mind being Harry's teddy and his godson could use him for that all he wanted. It made him feel good as well. Smiling a bit, he began to drift off to sleep.
