Chapter 30
“What do you have for me?” Rufus asked Albus as soon as the normal privacy wards slid into place. Though them meeting and the old man bringing him information wasn’t new by now, this particular get together was. Not only did the man want it well after official office hours, he didn’t want to talk in his office. Instead, he wanted one of the secure rooms in the Department of Mysteries used during war time to protect everyone. While he didn’t know the topic of the meeting, something Albus wouldn’t say, all he knew was it was big.
“This needs covered by the Official Secrets Act, Rufus,” Albus told him, leaning back and sipping his cup of very sweet tea.“I have the forms right here,” Rufus assured him, point to the stack. It was something Albus made clear he needed for the meeting. “Now, what is going on?” He asked, waiting and wondering.Albus pulled the forms over then looked at them. With a pleased nod, he conjured a quill and began to fill them out. As he did, he started, “I have a spy in Tom’s camp.”“You do?” Rufus asked, stunned. He then leaned forward and clasped his hands on the table, “Tell me about it.”“Severus Snape,” Albus told him simply, plowing through the forms and filling out what was needed so Severus would be protected when the war ended. Then he gave Rufus the bare minimum of what happened so long ago and the basics up until now. “He is bringing me plenty we can’t obtain any other way. My thought was you will need what he can bring to us,” he added distractedly as he worked.“I do,” Rufus admitted with a nod. This was a boon he didn’t expect.“I’ve given you most of what he has found out for us up until now. The parts I haven’t aren’t needed. With what’s happening at this point, I thought it best you know so you will understand the gravity of what he’s bringing and to protect him once this is over. After all, he’s putting himself in grave danger to do what he is undertaking, giving us information we couldn’t obtain any other way,” Albus explained distractedly as he filled out the papers.Rufus usually wouldn’t believe someone like Severus Snape was a spy just on someone’s word, but he remembered Albus vouching for him at the trials after the first war. As that had been official and on the record, he was leaning towards this being legitimate. “Is there a reason you’re doing this now?” He asked, wondering if something had come up which brought on exposing the secret.“Yes,” Albus told him simply, finishing up the forms. He then pushed them back over to Rufus. “Once you sign those, we’ll delve into what he brought me.”After signing the forms with a flourish, Rufus put his wand on the proper place, activating the seal and the act. He then sent them off to the proper place for filing. With a groan, he leaned back in his chair and said, “Right, filed. Now, what do you have? I assume it’s big.”“It is,” Albus told him gravely. “There is now a direct threat against the Ministry itself and Hogwarts. Plans are being made for both.” He then gave Rufus the best detailed rundown of what Severus had told him. When he finished, seeing Rufus look plenty grave, he added, “We need to make plans now to protect both to the best of our ability. I’ll leave it to you to contact the Board and help so I don’t have to give up how I know.”“I’ll take care of it,” Rufus assured him, planning to rouse a few people from bed as soon as this meeting was over and start working on protecting both. He was just thankful it was still summer break and no students were in the school.“On my end, I’ll start working with the teachers to do what we can to protect the castle. We may be able to find something all of you can’t with who teaches. I just want as much in place as we can get before the term kicks off. As Severus doesn’t know a timeline for what is planned, we have no idea when he’ll try, though my guess is he’ll wait until school is back in session, it’s best to do what we can now while no one is the wiser.”“Advice I’ll take,” Rufus nodded, agreeing without question for once. “We’ll do what we can, Albus, and keep you in the loop. On your end, I want kept abreast of what the teachers come up with as well so it doesn’t conflict. Either that or it’s something we can expound on and ensure works better.”“My word I’ll let you know,” Albus told him honestly with a nod of his head. After jotting down a couple notes, Rufus leaned back with a groan then asked, “Now, about the Horcruxes—anything for me? You said you had some. We need help, Albus. I’m not getting much further than you are. Even Lucius can’t give me anything.”“Some,” Albus told him, pulling out the remnants of the ones he had. “These are the ones we did find and were destroyed. It might help you to test them. I don’t know, though. However, we’ve come up with a theme. With some contacts of mine and wiggling around, I have some hints for you. At least two places for you to check. The final one—I have a guess.”“Talk to me,” Rufus told him, starting to look over the objects Albus laid out.Albus then talked him through all he knew. As he did, he produced the memories he managed to obtain, pushing them over. “The shack is still there. I assume one is in it. It’s not something I’ll go look for as I’m sure all of them are protected with curses. The other, as relates to the cup, I think I might know where it is. You’ll have to obtain Sirius’ permission to look for it.”“Where is it?” Rufus asked, honing in on the last one. The shack—he’d have some of his best go look for it and do what they could as they knew to protect themselves.“My guess is Lucius was asked to protect the diary because of his father. Tom wouldn’t trust something this valuable to just anyone. I think the cup is in what was Bella’s vault. As the goblins are still sorting through the whole mess with those and reabsorbing them, as well as their contents, into the Black vaults, Sirius would have to give you permission. If you would write him a missive, I’ll contact him as well to let him know just what you’re looking for and why. I don’t think he’ll take issue with you going in as long as the goblins are there.”“Something I’ll tend to in the morning,” Rufus told him honestly. “I’ll set it up. Just make sure you get in touch as well so he knows what I’m talking about.”“I’ll send off the letter tonight,” Albus assured him.“Do you have any idea how many more are out there and what they are? Well, aside from these.” Rufus inquired, jotting down notes so he remembered what he needed to take care of.“I think we have two more if these two pan out. There was another, but it’s gone.” Before Rufus could ask, Albus explained about Harry. “When he died, the one in his scar went with him. It’s nothing we need concern ourselves with. One I do think I know, but it’s one we’ll have to tend to last.” Then he went on to explain his leanings about Nagini.“If the snake is one, with as close to him as she stays, it’s doubtful we can do anything about her until the very end.” He then sighed when he finished.“Tomorrow I’ll talk with a few people in the Magical Creatures Department to see what they can do to track the snake. If he does let her out to roam, they might manage to get their hands on her. We can then tend to the matter. She’s considered deadly anyway, an animal we want to do away with,” Rufus told him, thinking over what he knew and could manage when it came to such matters.“If you do, he may become worse,” Albus told him honestly, though would defer to Rufus on the matter as he knew what he was doing.“He will no matter what,” Rufus snorted, looking plenty dour. “It’s not something we can do overnight anyway. It would take serious planning to manage. We need to at least start.”“Understood,” Albus nodded.“Now, on to the last one—any idea?” Rufus asked, pleased with all the information he was receiving. While he figured Albus had an agenda, he would take it for what it was then stay alert for manipulations.“If its how I figured and there is the theme of the Hogwarts houses, the last one is Ravenclaw. From research, I’ve not managed to find much that would be left from Rowena. The only item that might fit with what I know of Tom is the Diadem.” Albus explained.“That was lost long ago,” Rufus told him, not liking the idea of trying to find something that was little more than a legend.“Oh, indeed,” Albus agreed with a nod. “However, I did a little research on my own. With what I know of Tom’s travels after he graduated, he was in the same area where the Diadem supposedly vanished. I also know something others don’t; he was in the castle one time after he graduated.” He then talked him through the meeting about Tom taking on the DADA position. When he finished, he said, “It might be in the castle. Where is beyond me. You know as well as I do that Hogwarts holds many secrets and places no one knows about. If you can think of a way I don’t know or haven’t employed to see about finding it, we can try, Rufus.”“Damn,” Rufus grumbled, shaking his head. “Right, let me talk to a few people and see what we can manage when it comes to the castle. Other than that—the only suggestion I have is to put the elves to work hunting it. They might manage where we can’t since their magic is different and they probably know the castle better than we do. As its summer, they can focus on it.”“I’ll go talk to the head elf tonight,” Albus assured him. Then, almost as an afterthought as the idea came to him, he added, “And meet with the house ghosts. They might know or can talk to the other ghosts. One of them might have a hint for us.”“Good idea,” Rufus nodded. “I’ll put out feelers to the Board when I talk to them about a blueprint of the castle and any rooms which might not show up on it. It’ll be in the guise of protection. Someone might know something. I don’t know. We’ll try, Albus.”“All we can do,” Albus admitted with a small smile. “If nothing else, before the start of term, the DMLE can come in and I’ll have those in the Order help then we’ll scour the castle top to bottom. I’ll also talk to a few who might know of hidden rooms. There is the Chamber of Secrets, of course, but we have no way of getting in since it can only be opened by a Parselmouth. Let me put out feelers to Harry to see if he remembers what was down there.”“We might manage to fake the words needed to open it if he remembers,” Rufus told him. While he didn’t necessarily like the idea of Albus and the Order being involved in something this delicate, it was a case of needs must, so he would manage.“Now, anything else you have for me?” Rufus asked, though he was pleased with all the old man had given him so far. It would help, plenty.“Oh yes,” Albus chortled, smiling a tad. “A way to catch a few Death Eaters.” He then walked him through the buying of Grimmauld place and how the park might be a good way to take a few out. The more out, the better off they would all be in the end.
Bella was holed up in the small house she was using, pacing and agitated. The attack at Godric’s Hollow—it hadn’t gone as well as expected. In fact, it failed to draw Sirius out. Then there was how upset her Lord was over the failure. Not good, very not good. This meant she not only still had to get even with Sirius, but also find a way to get her one vault back. While she didn’t care about the money, other than how it affected her Lord to lose it, she knew what he had asked her to keep in that vault. While he hadn’t said anything yet, she knew he would eventually. She didn’t know just what the cup was, only that he asked her to store it there so it was safe. It meant it was valuable to him. No, she couldn’t lose the cup to Sirius.
As she paced faster, she tried to think. While she wanted to go after Sirius, the cup was now weighing on her mind. If what she knew was right, the vault transfer was still happening as it took time to reabsorb the vaults into the Black ones. If this was true, she was sure the really ancient ones, like hers, would take the longest and probably be one of the last. This meant she had time. The rub came in with the fact that Gringotts had only been broken into once. No one else had ever managed. Well, if she had her way, it would be burglarized again.
Mind working over the problem, she realized she needed help. This wasn’t something she could do alone. She also needed to know plenty when it came to Gringotts and their security. While she knew some, as well as the legends about them, it wasn’t enough. To make this work, she needed as much information as possible. Which meant she needed help, probably plenty of it.Brow furrowed, she stopped pacing then began to think of the people she could ask for help. Oh, some were out, like the low level ones and others who were just trying to curry favor, but some could be trusted to assist in this operation. They were the ones who were completely loyal to her Lord. Lucius—no, she would leave him out of it other than to go pick his brain on what he knew about Gringotts. Let him think what he wanted on the topic. He would know more than the rest, something she needed. Once she finished with him, she would go start to gather who could help so they had time to plot out what was needed. With a maniacal laugh, plan cemented, she hurried out to go talk to Lucius. Yes, she had an idea of how to do this!
With so much going wrong or events which he couldn’t anticipate happening, Voldemort wasn't in a good mood. Now, though, those moods paled in comparison to the one he was now in because of the news Bella delivered. Lucius wasn’t someone he trusted, and hadn’t since his return. The slippery Malfoy patriarch was about as loyal as thieves. Now, though, it appeared he should have kept a closer eye on him.
From what Bella said, and he confirmed, the Manor was locked down. As were all other properties Lucius owned which they knew about. A quick check with a source who knew what was happening at Azkaban told him Draco had been released. Oh yes, Lucius had turned traitor to rescue his poor bratty son. And he was furious! What Lucius knew could damage him plenty. While it wasn’t everything, there was enough to hurt. Now he had to compensate for not only the loss of funds, but what Lucius knew of plans. No, he wasn’t happy. After ensuring all his Death Eaters knew that Lucius, Narcissa and Draco would be brought to him unharmed so he could express his displeasure over the betrayal, Voldemort retired to his quarters with Nagini to plan around what he knew were plots Lucius was aware of. Yes, he needed to change up plenty. As he worked on what he had to deal with, his mind flitted to the cup in Bella’s vaults, or what had been Bella’s vaults. A mission of sorts needed to happen to retrieve it as well. He never thought Sirius would take the step he did, not even in his wildest dreams. Now it was in danger. While he was certain Black wouldn’t know what it was even if he did look at it, something doubtful with the mass of junk probably being reabsorbed, he wanted it back.Furiously pacing his quarters, he tried to calm his mind and focus. Nagini was lounging on his shoulders, hissing to him to assist, but his mind was too chaotic at the moment. To manage all this, he needed calm. Then he could start. Doing his best to focus, he paced faster, trying to get rid of the angry energy so he could get to work. Before dawn, he would have the basics in place then go from there. This had to come fast and he would ensure it did.
“Are you going to allow Rufus into the vault?” Remus asked, glancing over Sirius’ shoulder at the letter Albus sent. Sirius had explained to them what it said, so he knew. They were now just discussing it. As Harry was tired from working on various areas all day, he had fallen asleep with his head in Sirius’ lap. Since they were in bed, it was fine as he’d be comfortable.
“I will,” Sirius nodded, folding the letter back up and tossing it on the bedside table. Fingers starting to comb through Harry’s hair, he added, “I’ll add the standard provision to the letter to the goblins of them being present and it’s the only item he can take, but let him have it. If it is a Horcrux, I’ll bet my wand Bella and the evil git will do everything in their power to get their hands on it anyway. It’s safer this way.”“Very true,” Remus agreed.Remus then took in Sirius’ tired appearance and how he looked a tad stressed. “Are you doing fine, Sirius?” He asked gently. While they had a busy day with plenty to take care of, the look spoke of more than just the normal sort of tired.“As well as can be expected,” Sirius admitted, still running his fingers through Harry’s hair, head going back and eyes sliding shut.“The bond?” Remus asked softly, casting a spell on Harry so he didn’t hear them talking and wake up. If it was dealing with the bond and issues Sirius was having with it, he didn’t want Harry to end up stressing over it as it might cause a setback in his progress.“Yes,” Sirius sighed. “Not to worry, I have a handle on it and am dealing the best I can. I won’t let it get the better of me.”“Which end does it deal with? Mine or Harry’s? Is it both? Just from yours?” He asked gently. If Sirius talked it out, he might feel a tad better about so much.“Harry’s,” Sirius grumbled, shaking his head. “You’re fine. It seems you have an instinct on just how to deal with whatever and go about matters the way that helps most. It’s just—not to worry, I have a handle on it.”“If you need to talk, I’ll listen,” Remus offered. “If you talk it out, we might find a better way to go about it. Well, it might help you feel better as well since you wouldn’t be keeping it bottled up.”Though Sirius wasn’t the sort to discuss such matters and anything overly personal, he knew airing it out was for the best. This matter affected all three of them, so he did need help. Besides, Remus was calm and logical enough that he might see a better way to go about matters. With a heavy sigh, he then laid out the biggest of the problems which were affecting him the most. When he finished, he added, “I won’t let it get the better of me, I swear. If I did, I know what could come of it then the whole mess would end up harder to deal with.”“You’re handling it the right way,” Remus assured him, scooting closer and pressing against Sirius, draping one arm around him. “Harry is actually progressing very well and has come far. It’s not the same as before, but it’s very close. If you become too agitated over what you see, just say something. We won’t take it badly, Sirius. It’s hard on both of you, just in different ways.”“I’ll try, I just don’t want to end up causing him more problems by the bond thinking I’m unhappy with whatever. We don’t need a repeat of the bit with Albus,” Sirius groaned, leaning against Remus.“Very true, but we can manage,” Remus assured him. “Just say something to me then we’ll find a way to take your mind off of it. With as much as we’re dealing with then adding in the war, there is plenty of stress from all directions. It’s probably factoring in as well and adding to what you’re dealing with. Taking a break and finding something fun to do will help all of us, Sirius. Harry and I can sense when you’re having issues. It’s not like you can hide it from us. Then it affects us as well, Harry more than it does me.”“I know it does,” Sirius sighed. “It’s just not something I always remember while actually dealing with it.”“Understandable as well,” Remus soothed. “We’re in this together, Sirius. Harry isn’t the only one who needs help at times. We all do. You’re included there. While you’re the ‘alpha’ in the relationship, it doesn’t mean you have to go it alone. We’re with you and can assist.”“Something else I know as well, though the pull from my end makes it hard to allow someone to help,” Sirius told him softly. “I try, but it’s not that easy.”“No, it’s not, something I completely understand.” Remus conceded. “We’ll manage in the end. Nothing to worry about. I know you well enough to understand the signs then will start trying to help. Let’s see what we can manage. Plenty to do here to keep our minds off the bothersome bits.”“I sometimes find it mildly disturbing how well you know me, Moony,” Sirius chuckled, though he appreciated what was said.“We’ve been together a long time, Padfoot,” Remus told him with a smile. “While we’ve both changed over time, some of the signs are still there and the same. Those are easy to read.”“Just like I know the looks you give when it comes to your perverted bent,” Sirius chuckled, shaking his head.“Just like those,” Remus agreed with a nod. Leaning up, he gave Sirius a kiss then said, “Just let us know. We can help. Helping will make it easier on all of us in the long run.”“True,” Sirius agreed after kissing him back. Then, with a tired sigh, he said, “I need sleep. Tired here. Being tired won’t help anything.”“No, it won’t,” Remus agreed. Dousing the lights, he then slipped his wand under his pillow and flopped down, waiting for Sirius to move Harry so they could settle in for the night. Tomorrow would bring its own stresses, so rest was needed. Besides, it helped all of them, but especially Harry and Sirius, to curl up together. With all that was going on, they needed all the help they could get.
