Hey guys! I know, late again. Here are the reasons why this time. 1) This chapter kicked my ass and I'm still not sure if I'm happy with it, but I figured I waited long enough to post it. I really wanted to message a few people to get some advice but I don't know how to message other people on this site. 2) My grandmother (who is my life role model) has been in and out of the hospital and rehab center for the last few weeks and my family, including herself, have opted to do palative care from here on out since she hasn't been able to walk with a walker and no help since she went into the hospital the first time within the last month or so. How do you say goodbye to someone who has helped you through so much in life? Any way, moving on. 3) For those that don't know, I have a three year old daughter. I love her to death but she is three and driving me absolutely crazy. I actually finished writing this chapter while sitting at Children's Hospital on Friday night. She had been complaining about pain when she pottied (not potty trained yet) so my mom suggested that I take her in. Of course, she cried (more like screamed), because she said she hurt, until we got there and then it was like she never hurt to begin with. So yes, she is okay and there was nothing wrong (after spending two hours there and going to two places before childrens).
I hope you guys like this chapter more than I did (I think that it needed to be done to get a real feel for Hermione's parents). It is all from Draco's POV except the very end. I have had the next few chapters on my mind since I started writing this story and have most of the next chapter written already so I'm seriously hoping that nothing gets in the way of me posting on time. As always, reviews are seriously welcomed and responses are at the bottom.
As the plane backed out of the terminal, Mr. Granger turned to Draco. “Why don’t you tell me a little more about yourself.”
Draco thought about that for a moment, not knowing where to start. Instead of trying to decide, he asked, “What would you like to know?”
“What was your childhood like?”
“I never wanted for anything. Materialistic at least. In a sense, everything was simple. I attended the social events with my parents; it’s practically demanded for those in the pureblood status. Well, that and if it was an event my family was involved in, everyone would show up either because they would try to impress my parents or because they were afraid of my father and didn’t want to give him a reason to harm them. Coming from what I used to think was the most influential family, I was always given the best toys, best clothes, best everything. But the older I got, the more I realized that it just turned me into a selfish prat.”
“Good evening ladies and gentleman and welcome to flight 705 to Darwin. We have just been cleared for takeoff so please sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.”
“So your parents were very respected in the wizarding world.”
“My father mainly.” Draco said. He was looking out the window watching the ground speed by. “Oh, sweet Merlin.” Draco’s hands gripped the armrests with all the strength he had.
Next to him, Mr. Granger chuckled quietly before patting Draco’s arm. “Let’s continue our discussion. It will help. Now when you say you never wanted for anything materialistic, what do you mean?”
“I received everything I ever wanted. Except for affection from my father. My mother tried to explain why he withheld it from me, but the only thing I took away from it was that I needed to work harder or it. Once school started, I thought it would have been easy to show him how hard I was working for his love, but I was bested in every class, no matter how hard I worked.” Draco smiled thinking back on all those years. “I was so frustrated for a few years and I knew my father was very disappointed in me. Mainly because I was being bested by a muggleborn.” Draco chanced a look at Mr. Granger and saw that he was smiling. “I was raised upon the notion that muggleborns were extremely beneath me.”
“What changed your perspective?”
Draco smiled, remembering that night perfectly. “It was Christmas night my fourth year. Practically the whole school was there because it was the night of the Yule Ball and two other schools were there as well.”
“I remember Hermione mentioning that. It was the Triwizard Tournament wasn’t it?”
“Yes, sir. And when the doors opened and the champions walked in, my eyes landed on Hermione and it seemed like my heart stopped. In that moment I thought, ‘how could someone that is supposed to be so dirty be so pretty?’ After that, any time I bantered or picked on her, it was because I wanted her attention.” Draco had been smiling the whole time. “I know it wasn’t the best way to get her attention,” he added, “but at the time, I was still trying to uphold my reputation. The war changed everything, though. I don’t care about what most other people think of me. I’m doing what I can to mend my family name by finishing school and doing something to help those that have lost so much more than me.” Draco continued to stare out the window. “In all reality, I only care about what my mother, the Weasley’s, Harry, and Hermione think of me. And you and Mrs. Granger of course. I want to make things right for the people my father wronged, but I don’t care about if they accept me. Does that make sense?”
Draco turned back to Mr. Granger to see that he was smiling. “It makes perfect sense, and one day soon, I think you will find yourself surprised by how much you actually care about what everyone else thinks.”
The rest of the flight went by easily enough. Mr. Granger had pulled out a deck of cards and had insisted on teaching Draco Blackjack. By the time they had landed, Draco felt that Hermione’s father, at least, accepted him.
“That looked promising,” Kingsley said as they made their way through the airport.
“It feels promising,” Draco replied. “At least with Mr. Granger. Mrs. Granger is a different story.” Ahead of them, Draco watched Mr. and Mrs. Granger bicker quietly between themselves.
“Yes, well mothers have a tendency to be more protective of their children,” Kingsley said, watching them as well. “She is obviously going to be a little more difficult to win over, but after all, maybe Mr. Granger can help with that.”
“Let’s hope.”
Draco continued on in silence as Harry came over with Ron and struck up conversation. They easily found the next terminal, made their way to their seats, and were soon in the air once more, once their way to Singapore.
“My husband seems to be very fond of you.” Draco turned away from the muggle screen playing a video to look at the woman next to him. “He insists that you are not the same boy that bullied my little girl, but pardon me for not believing you or him right away.” Mrs. Granger hadn’t even looked up from her book as she addressed Draco. “I want to hear it in my daughters voice and see the truth in her eyes before I believe anything you have to say.”
“I wouldn’t have it any other way, Mrs. Granger.” Draco replied. “I was horribly nasty to your daughter. I thought she would never forgive me, let alone love me after what I put her through. I vowed to her and your husband that I would never hurt her again. I know she doesn’t love easily and I don’t want to lose the love she has given me.”
“Just remember, son,” Mr. Granger said from his aisle seat to Draco’s right. “True love does not come by finding the perfect person, true love comes by learning to see an imperfect person perfectly. My daughter is far from perfect, and from what you have told me, as are you. As long as you both understand and accept that you will be just fine.”
Draco didn’t know what to say so he didn’t say anything. Instead he thought about what he was just told. At least until he was pulled from his thoughts, once again by Mrs. Granger.
“What I would like to know is where my husband and I will be staying. My husband had mentioned that Hermione does not know about any of this.”
“Yes, ma’am. She has been missing you quite a bit. She pulled her memories of you and set them on her desk, constantly debating on coming to get you. I thought bringing you back would be a good Christmas present. As far as where you are going to stay, you have some options. You are more than welcome to stay at the manor or I can get you a hotel room.”
“Didn’t you say something about a ball?” Mr. Granger asked.
“Yes, sir. On Christmas Eve. We should arrive just in the nick of time.”
“A ball for what?” Mrs. Granger asked skeptically. “And what do you mean ‘we’?”
“My mother and I are having a charity ball for all muggleborns, their parents, and the children that lost their parents during the war. Mother and I are hoping to raise enough money to help muggleborns and orphans with school expenses,” Draco stated matter-of-factly. “We were hoping you wouldn’t be opposed to attending. Perhaps as the guests of honor? You wouldn’t have to give a speech or anything. I just thought it would be nice to recognize you both.”
Mr. and Mrs. Granger were quiet for a moment. “We will discuss it.” Mrs. Granger said.
“That’s all I ask,” Draco replied. Unexpectedly, his pocket started to vibrate, causing him to jump a little.
HG: Draco? Are you awake?
HG: Please answer me.
HG: I guess you’re not awake.
“Is that my daughter again?” Mr. Granger asked.
“Yes, sir. May I borrow-“ Draco looked up to see that Mr. Granger was already holding out his pen. “Thank you.”
“Hold onto it for a while,” he replied smiling.
DM: I’m awake. My parchment was in my pocket and I didn’t feel it heat up. Is everything okay?
HG: I had another nightmare, and woke up in a panic.
DM: Are you okay? What was it about?
HG: I’m okay, just shaken. It was from the war. Harry and I had gone to Godric’s Hollow during Christmas last year. We were standing by Harry’s parents’ graves when we were approach by Bathilda Bagshot. After we followed her back to her house, she took Harry upstairs where she shed her skin and turned into Niagini. In the dream, we couldn’t get away. She killed Harry and started towards me. I woke up as she was about to attack.
DM: I’m so sorry, love.
HG: It’s just harder to forget because you’re not here to distract me. When will you be back?
DM: I know. I wish I was holding you right now. Today is the 22nd correct?
HG: Yes.
DM: I will be home in two days. Tell me something, though. Where was Ron?
HG: Well, while we were Horcrux hunting, Ron and Harry had had a bit of a row and he left. It was just Harry and I for a couple of weeks.
“Weasley?” Draco said looking at the redhead beside Mr. Granger. “We need to have a conversation when this thing lands in forty-five minutes.” Draco watched Ron’s face pale slightly before turning back to his parchment.
HG: He’s justified redeemed himself from his actions already. But I don’t want to talk about it anymore. How about we talk about why you are on an airplane.
DM: I told you. We have to act like muggles.
HG: And how’s that going for you?
DM: Not going to lie. It’s pretty terrifying. I hate not being able to use magic.
HG: I love flying in airplanes.
DM: You’ll fly in an airplane but not on a broom? Why?
HG: Because an airplane – plane for short – is a closed area and have far less accidents than brooms do.
DM: I don’t have accidents when I’m flying.
HG: Hahaha. What do you call the time your peg caught and you went flying through the air during second year? Wasn’t that your first game, too?
DM: (Rolling eyes) That wasn’t my fault.
HG: Still an accident, wasn’t it? (giggling at you)
DM: (smiling) Yes. Okay. I’ve had one accident and it was because my twelve year old self had too much confidence that it turned him into a cocky prat. So what are your plans for today?
“You’re up early.”
Hermione looked up from the couch to see Ginny standing in the doorway pulling her hair into a ponytail. “Had a nightmare so I’m writing Draco. Where are you off to?”
“Going for a run. Gotta stay in shape. Wanna come?”
“You’re going to run in the snow?” Hermione questioned.
“Yep. The cold air helps clear my head. It might help you, too.”
Hermione sighed, knowing she was right. “Yeah, I’ll go. Just give me five minutes.”
Ginny smiled triumphantly and continued getting ready.
HG: I guess I’m going for a run with Ginny. Then all the girls will be here after lunch to do some Christmas shopping and get ready for tomorrow.
DM: That sounds like so much fun. Stay warm. I love you.
HG: I will. I love you, too. Stay safe.
DM: I promise.
LadyShire: What do you think about this? I hope it gives some clarity as far as where her parents stand. As far as Hermione getting mad, you'll have to wait a couple more chapters to find out for sure. Next is the night with the girls and the tea with Narcissa so it should be mainly Hermione. Narcissa is also going to let Hermione choose a dress for the ball in this chapter or the next depending on how long this chapter actually is. Thank you so much for not giving up on me. I got stuck in serious ruts (as well as life taking a dump on me) but I always think about the reviews that you leave and you keep keep me going. Thank you.
Thunderbird: Thank you for bearing with me. It's been a hard couple of weeks. This chapter was difficult for me and I really wanted to reach out to you even though I know you are super busy because I had some questions about how I wanted this chapter to go and I thought you would be the best one to get answers from, but as I stated in the beginning, I didn't know how to get ahold of you, so I just went back and reread SMN (again because it is by far my favorite fan fic) and looked closer at how you had worded certain scenes and kind of based what I wanted to say off of that. It is definitely going to be an interesting holiday. The next few chapters have been mapped in my head for quite some time and I'm excited that I can finally put all my thoughts down on paper (even though I'm still not sure how I'm going to close the story yet). I can't wait to see what you think about this chapter.
