Dinner was a rather pleasant experience for Hermione. She was surprised at how much Severus had relaxed after he made their announcement. She knew then that he really did love her and he wanted to marry her. He wouldn’t have stood up and announced it unless it was real. She smiled broadly as she felt his arm come around the back of her chair ais bis breath come close to her ear.
“Love, I believe that Professor Lupin would like us to join him outside after dinner. I think he wants us to witness your success.” She could hear the pride spilling out in Severus’ words, but he needed to realize that he had as much a hand in it as she did.
“Our success,” she corrected him.
A light chuckle came from the usually dark man and he kissed her softly on the lips. Hermione almost passed out right there. Severus Snape was not one for public displays of affection, and he had just kissed her in front of all the students. Another chuckle was heard at her discomfiture. “Everyone knows that we are engaged, why not show them how much I love you.”
“Who are you, and what have you done with the snarky bastard of a potions master?”
“I do believe, milady, that he is on a short hiatus, at least for the next few minutes.” He smiled against her lips before kissing her a. He. Hermione couldn’t help but smile. She was in love, and he loved her in return. There was no doubt in her mind; this was the way things were meant to be.
As the couple sat engrossed in each other, Hermione sat up at the smell of fresh dew and grass. “Hello, Remus.”
“Hermione. Severus. Would the two of you please join Sirius and I in the garden? It is the full moon, and I would like my friends to be there with me to enjoy it.”
At that moment Hermione realized that this would be the first full moon that Remus would be able to enjoy since he was bitten as a child. Her heart wrenched at that thought, but a bit of pride flowed at the realization that she could give him this chance. She had very little doubt that the potion wouldn’t work, but still prayed to the gods that she had not made a mistake. Hermione heard Severus reply that they would meet them outside, but her mind was still contemplating anything that could possibly go wrong.
Severus seemed to read her mind. He was starting to do that a lot. “It will work, Hermione. Stop worrying. I will have my wand at the ready, just in case.” She nodded as he stood up to take her outside.
The sun was barely visible on the horizon when Severus guided her down the steps of Hogwarts and out into the garden. The moon was not yet out that Severus could see. The couple walked up to where Remus, Sirius, Albus and Minerva were standing.
Remus immediately wrapped his arms around Hermione. “Are you ready, Hermione?”
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that?” He laughed as he hugged her again and then stepped back away from the group. The moon would be coming up over the Forbidden Forest at any moment and Remus didn’t want to take any chances.
Severus pulled Hermione to him, so that she stood in front of him with her back against him. He wrapped her arms around her waist and lovingly set his chin atop her head. He felt so comfortable like this; he wished that she could see the moon rise with him. If it were just the two of them, this would definitely be romantic. Severus made a mental note to share a moonrise with her after her sight returned.
Remus stood and watched the moon start to crest over the trees and held his breath. It was habit, his body was awaiting the pain, the torture of his soul, the crackling of bones. After a few minutes, the moon was full and bright above the forest and Remus stood there, silent, in shock. As the moonlight surrounded him he felt whole, he felt human. There was no monster, no demon writhing to get out. He whooped in sheer joy and ran to Hermione, sweeping her up into his arms.
“Thank you, Hermione. Oh God, thank you.” Hermione could feel his tears against her hair and she wanted to cry along with him. “It’s been thirty-seven years since I have been able to look at the moon without fear. You did I o I owe you my life.” After many moments of swinging Hermione around in his arms, Remus set her down in front of Severus. “Thank you, Severus, for all your support throughout the years. We were enemies once, but now I would like to consider us friends.” Severus accepted the hand that Remus proffered and was immediately pulled into an awkward embrace by the ex-werewolf.
Severus settled next to his love as he watched Remus go around to each of his friends and then uemonemoniously go jumping and frolicking in the garden with a large black dog bounding beside him. Severus leaned down to Hermione’s ear and whispered to her that it was time for her potion. She nodded and let him lead her to the lab.
A few hours later Hermione found herself in Severus’ bed and he was wiping away some remnants of the potion from her eyes. “I am pleased so far with the results, Hermione,” he assured her. “The scarring is diminishing and I think the second potwillwill be ready for next week.”
Hermione frowned a bit. “Severus, how can the potion be ready for next week, when we have no menstrual blood?”
He sat down gently on the bed next to her. “Please, love, don’t be upset with me.” Hermione stiffened up. “I sent an owl to Draco saying I needed to replenish my stores and that I don’t trust apothecaries with such a volatile ingredient. He spoke to his wife, who so happened to be on her cycle and was able to retrieve a vial from her.”
Hermione shivered slightly. “Ginny gave you her blood?”
“Yes, dear, being a trained mediwitch, she knows how important that particular ingredient is. When Draco queried about why you could not donate, I simply said that your cycle was too far away and I needed the ingredient now.” Hermione seemed to relax at that, but it still hit her as somewhat wrong that he had done that.
“Please forgive me love. I did not think you would be willing to ask something like this of your friend, so I took it upon myself.”
“I can’t believe you, Severus. I would have liked to have had the choice. I mean this potion is for me. I know that I couldn’t give it, but there’s something about a woman asking another woman for something like this. I know its only blood, but it is part of being a woman. If I needed human eggs, would you go ask for that too?” Hermione was yelling at him now. Sometime she had gotten up from the bed without Severus noticing and was now pacing across the bedroom. “Think about it, Severus, if you needed sperm or something like that, would you want me to go ask someone else for it instead of you? No. You would feel weak, like I was trying to save you from something painful. I don’t need your protection, Severus. I have lived with this for a long time. I have accepted it. I could have asked one of my best friends for it. I maybe even would have told her why I couldn’t do it myself, but you did it for me. You wanted to protect me. Is that what I am, someone for you to protect, like a child. Am I a child, to you, Severus?”
Severus stood up and wrapped his arms forcibly around her, stopping her in mid-step. He couldn’t handle her being upset, especially at him. “No, Hermione, you are not a child. I am sorry, love; I thought I was helping you. I didn’t think of it that way. I just want you better. I want to be able to look into your eyes again. I want you to see the things I do. I want to enjoy those things with you. I am sorry for hurting you.” He dropped to his knees in front of her with his arms around her waist, nuzzling into her belly, seeking her forgiveness.
Hermione knew that he was just trying to help. She didn’t know why she was so upset about this. Maybe it was just the reaction to the idea of her not being able to provide the blood herself. She ran her fingers lovingly through Severus’ hair and he squeezed her tighter before lifting her into his arms and carrying her into bed. That night they held each other, wordlessly communicating their love through the embrace. Soon Hermione fell asleep. Severus watched her for what seemed like hours before letting himself succumb to slumber.
Hermione awoke to a faint light coming from somewhere. A faint light? She quickly turned to Severus and shook him awake. “Hummppff” he grumbled and wiped the sleep from his eyes.
“Is it light in here Severus?” He looked at her with a confused _expression.
“Yes.”
“I can see it,” she said excitedly.
“Are you sure? What do you mean?” his voice was just as excited as hers.
“Cover my eyes.” Severus covered them with his hand and Hermione could tell it was dark around her. “All right, uncover them.” He did and her vision was filled with a warm light coming through the skin covering her eyes. “I can see it!”
“Hermione, ou kou know what this means?” She shook her head lightly.
“Love, it means, that your vision may not have been affected. The potion is working, it is thinning the scar tissue and you are seeing the light filtered through it. It’s working. I can’t believe it, it’s working!” he hugged her tightly. When he had found the treatment for Hermione’s eyes, he was very skeptical of it, but would not tell her that. He wanted her to be optimistic, which in turn made him the same. He was astounded that it was working. He couldn’t believe it. If all the other potions worked thill, ll, she would be seeing by Christmas Eve.
