Chapter 32. Lucius’s Revenge – Or Is It?
Avery dragged the silenced and bound Sasha out the door and down the narrow hallway to the far rooms of the dungeon. She struggled most of the way until eventually Avery became too frustrated and annoyed. Taking out his wand, he magically petrified her, and then levitated her prone body the rest of the way. They entered the far room. It was dim and vast, lighted by three fireplaces located somewhere along the distant walls. Death Eaters in their black cloaks and silver masks were clustered around the room.
Unceremoniously, Avery dumped Sasha’s rigid body onto one of the stone slabs in a corner of the room. Keeping her petrified, he removed the magical chains that still bound her hands and feet, and replaced them with the leather straps that were attached to the slab. Once he was satisfied she was secure at both wrists and ankles, he reversed the petrifaction curse, freeing her. Immediately, she lurched at the bindings holding her, to no avail. She was held fast.
From distant corners of the vast, dim room, one could hear panting moans, and sobbing pleas for help. The smell of sex and vomit permeated the room. Snape approached the stone slab with Lucius right behind him. Lucius kept the two wands planted firmly into the small of Snape’s back, not trusting the dark haired wizard for a second. He carefully watched every move Snape made, almost completely ignoring Sasha’s body on the slab.
As he entered the room, Snape looked around with his hooded gaze, assessing the situation. There were probably at least a dozen other Death Eaters presents. Most were in pairs or threesomes, and their attentions were mainly focused on the people tied to the slabs immediately in front of them. Snape thought briefly what would happen if he tried to remove Sasha’s bindings, grab her, and get back to the Black Room to disapparate. He realized that by the time he brought up his wand and had started to utter the first spell, they would turn on him quickly. The Death Eaters were not some inept group of incompetents, he knew. They would not hesitate to kill him, one of their own, in an instant if they were threatened in any way.
Snape forced himself to look down at Sasha, strapped to the stone table. She had stopped struggling, and was now focusing her sights on Lucius, her breathing heavy and silent. Snape could actually feel the hatred coming off her in waves, and was surprised she was not more frightened. She raised her head off the slab as far as the restraints would let her. Staring at Lucius, she suddenly spit, the wad of phlegm hurling toward him but going wide. She missed, but at least she let him know she was not going down without a fight.
Snape turned to look at Lucius. A wide smile of mischief appeared on the blond wizard’s face, and with his free hand, he brought up his index finger and slowly waggled it back and forth at Sasha. It seems Lucius was enjoying this very much. Almost too much. Snape clenched his teeth in frustration at having to endure being there, but unable to help Sasha. He was patiently waiting for an opportunity to open up. He had no idea what could possibly happen, or what he would do, but he wanted to be ready if a distraction occurred.
Meanwhile, Avery had stood beside and just out of Sasha’s field of view, calmly unrolling a nondescript cloth bundle. Snape could hear metal clinking against metal as the cloth unrolled, and the sound sent shivers of fear and apprehension up his spine. It was then that true fear for Sasha’s life welled up in him. There was nothing he wanted more than to untie her, and get away from this living nightmare. However, he had to wait, as there was so much at stake. He could not risk blowing his cover unless he absolutely had to.
Avery was organizing the metal instruments neatly on the cloth, when Snape had his first glimpse of what they were. At the sight of the scalpels and forceps, Snape’s guts twisted in revulsion. Oh God, he could not let her go through this. He let her down once, when she was a child. He let her down again, when obviously Lucius found her at Hogwarts despite the extra charms and wards he placed on the Ravenclaw common room entranceway. He would not let her down this time.
Snape was just forming the phrases of the avada kedavra curse in his mind, and was surreptitiously reaching inside his robe for his wand when he felt the tip of two wands shoved painfully into the base of his jaw and neck, forcing his head up. He froze, then looked over and saw two pale blue eyes boring into his black ones. Lucius had been watching him, not Sasha, and had not missed his actions.
"Your wand, Severus. Give it to me," Lucius croaked in his raw voice. Snape made to bring it out when Lucius jabbed deeper, stopping Snape. He reached over and groped around Snape’s robes until he found the mahogany wand. He pulled it out and tucked it into his own robe, effectively removing Snape’s last chance at freeing Sasha. Lucius gave him a taunting smile and eased up on the pressure of the wands, allowing Snape’s head to lower again. Snape closed his eyes in resignation. He had just gone from a bad situation to the worst possible one. I am so sorry Sasha, Snape thought remorsefully. I was too late, yet once again to save you.
Avery’s voice captured his attention. Snape looked over to see him standing behind Sasha, leaning over her so she could see his face.
"Well hello there!" he said in an overly friendly tone. "Apparently we have met before, a few years back. I don’t remember the incident myself, but don’t take that personally," he said, grinning.
"Usually we do things in a very specific order around here," he explained patiently, keeping his hands away from her field of vision. "First comes pleasure, then the pain. Well I hate to break it to you my dear, but I am under orders," here he stopped and indicated Lucius with a nod of his head before continuing, "to skip the first part. Apparently your boyfriend," he indicated Snape with a life of his head and a smirk, "would be a bit ‘put out’ if you were inappropriately touched," he said, giggling to himself.
"I guess I gave that to you, didn’t I?" he asked questioningly, softly caressing Sasha’s scar with his fingers.
"I am really sorry. Honestly. I feel I have to make it up to you somehow," he said, his voice dripping with ineriterity. "I guess there really is only one way to repay you," he said, a sadistic gleam appearing in his eyes. "And that would be to remove it."
Sasha was looking up at him, and her anger from earlier on was quickly giving way to genuine terror. Avery raised his hand revealing the sharp scalpel he held. He moved it back and forth, a wicked smile emerging on his face. It flashed, reflecting the flames from a distant fireplace. Sasha started to move her head back and forth in silent denial, and her gray eyes were open wide in fear. Her lips were open in a scream, but no sound came out. Avery reached out and restrained her twitching head with his free hand.
Avery lowered his head so it was but inches from hers, keeping it restrained on the stone slab.
"It’s time to get down to business, Sasha. I really hope you took Snape’s potion," he said softly bringing both hands up to gently touch her face. "Because I won’t lie to you. This is going to hurt. A lot," he said earnestly.
Slowly, holding her head still, he pulled the skin on the left-hand side of her face taught with one hand, while the other brought up the scalpel until the tip of it appeared just under her left eye. He deftly ignored her screams of pain and terror as he patiently, methodically, began to surgically excise the scar out of her face.
Snape was feeling nauseous at the sight of what was happening. Every slice and slash of tcalpcalpel on her face, he felt. And there was nothing her could do to stop it. After what seemed hours of her silent screams, Avery made a satisfied grunt. He reached into the bloody meat of what was left of her cheek and tugged on the bundle of nerves running along there. Snape felt his body go weak and his stomach churn. He actually saw bits of white tooth show through the open wound in her cheek. He thought he was about to vomit at the sight. Snape felt helpless as he stood there, watching his beloved be tortured.
Sasha had passed out again; from fear or pain, he was not sure. Avery revived her, then continued his revolting vivisection. After she had vomited for the third time, Snape realized he had to stop this. He lurched forward to stop Avery, but Lucius grabbed him by the arm, preventing him.
It was not worth it, having her go through this torture, all because of him. He had to get her out of there, even if it meant giving himself up to Lucius. Giving up everything. They had been at it almost an hour, and he knew she could not survive much longer. Snape turned his head to address Lucius.
"Enough! That is enough. Let her be," he said in anguish. "You can have me, Lucius. Just stop Avery, and let her go." Cold blue eyes met Snape’s hateful black ones. Snape saw the smile of surprise cross Lucius’s face.
So. He had won. Snape had finally caved in under the pressure of watching Sasha being tortured. He would rather sacrifice himself, his cover and reveal his allegiance with Dumbledore, than let his precious girlfriend die. Well. That was interesting. Lucius turned to Avery.
"That will do, Avery. Go find someone else to play with," Lucius commanded gravelly. Avery looked up at the blond wizard, his bloody scalpel hovering in mid air. He stared at him in confusion, since he was just beginning to enjoy himself. All three wizards stood there, not moving, the tension building between them. For a moment neither Snape nor Lucius was sure Avery was going to stop working on Sasha. Finally, throwing the instrument down onto the cloth in disgust, Avery stormed off.
Lucius backed up, still pointing the wands at Snape.
"Pick her up," he said, his voice cracking. Snape hurried over to where she lay, unconscious on the stone slab. He quickly undid the leather bindings, and carefully, gently, picked her up and held her to him, cradling her mutilated face to his chest.
Oh God, this is all my fault, he thought, holding her tighter. He could feel her heart beating weakly. Snape noticed the pools of blood on the floor around where her head was positioned. From where he was standing with Lucius, he had not noticed how much she had lost. Quickly, he placed his hands under her knees and below her back, and lifted her up.
Snape could feel tears of shame and fury build up behind his eyes. Lucius was going to pay for this, he would make sure if it, was the last thing he ever did. He walked toward Lucius with Sasha still in his arms, and a snarl of rage crossed his face. Lucius flicked the wands, indicating Snape should bring her back down the hall into the Black Room. Looking down at her oozing face, Snape started off. Lucius was just a step behind him.
They were about half way down the hall when Snape heard a sharp intake of breath behind him. He turned to see Lucius bent over, clutching his chest with his free hand. Snape continued on, more concerned with Sasha welfare than Lucius’s. Entering the room, he very carefully placed Sasha down on the cold floor. Lucius limped in, momentarily blinded with pain. Snape saw the chance he was waiting for and acted.
He leaped toward Lucius, and was about to reach for the wands in his hand when Lucius dropped them onto the floor. Snape grabbed them up, stood pointed them at Lucius. By now, the blond wizard wn aln all fours, heaving as pain wracked his body in waves.
"Lucius you are going to pay dearly for what you have done tonight," he snarled with vengeance. Snape was about to cast a hex when he realized something was very wrong. Lucius’s normally platinum blond hair had threads of brown suddenly sprouting of it. And, Snape could not believe his eyes, Lucius seemed to be shrinking.
He turned his face up to look at Snape, revealing two differently coloured eyes. One was a pale watery blue; the other, a soft dove gray. Snape, beginning to realize what was happening, whipped around in horror and saw who he thought was Sasha, still laying still on the stone floor. Long strands of white-blond hair were quickly replacing the chestnut brown locks. Snape turned back around.
The figure in front of him was reaching out for him. Snape watched in fascination as before his eyes the tissue along the left-hand side of Lucius’s face started to pucker, forming the outline of a scar that he knew oh so well.
He squinted. "Sasha? Is that you?" he asked incredulously.
Through her pain she looked up at him with her two gray eyes. "Yes," she croaked. "Polyjuice. I switched the potions Lucius and I drank." Another wave of pain crossed her features, and she grit her teeth until it passed.
"Lucius. Get Lucius before he wakes up. Make him forget," she managed to say.
Snape realized their situation, and that they did not have much time. He gently reached into her robe to retrieve his own wand and walked over to Lucius. He looked down to see the raw wound on the man’s normally handsome features, and full impact of what had happened over the last hour set in.
It was Lucius who had experienced being tortured at the hands of Avery, not Sasha. Snape could not help but laugh in relief, and awe. How she did it, he had no idea. He would find out later.
Snape was tempted to leave Lucius there, so he would remember everything that had occurred that night. Regrettably, he realized it would be best if they healed him, then applied the memory charm on him so he would not recall the evening’s events. Avery would be none the wiser, and Lucius would just miss a few hours. Hating to do so, but knowing this was the best possible course of action, Snape went to work on the unconscious Lucius, healing him, and charming his memory.
He left Lucius there, lying on the floor. His arrogantly handsome features were once again restored, and there was no evidence that he had spent the past hour being skinned alive by Avery.
Snape turned back to see Sasha weakly getting to her knees. His heart leapt in joy at the realization that she was alive and well. He strode over and wrapped his arms around her in a tight embrace. There was so much to say, and yet there was no time. Talking would have to wait until later. He let her go, but held onto her hand.
He noticed the bruising around her neck was turning black and blue. He realized Sasha must have somehow switched the potions for the Dark Revel with Polyjuice potion. He had no idea how she came by it, or had access to Lucius’s issues, but he would find out later.
"Sasha, we don’t have much time. We have to get out of here now, as it is still unsafe while we are still in the Malfoy Manor," Snape insisted.
"Hold on tight to my hand, I will apparate us to my carriage just outside of Hogwarts. We can talk later, when it is safe."
She looked up at him, her large gray eyes shining with unspilled tears. She nodded her head in agreement. She was exhausted, her voice was almost gone from Lucius’s strangling, and more than anything else, just wanted this nightmare to be over with.
A loud crack filled the room, and they were gone, leaving Lucius alone on the stone floor of the Black Room.
