CH31
The Headmaster’s office seemed stuffier than before; even Fawkes looked a little dimmer among the dusty air. Ron watched the phoenix idly while he waited for Dumbledore to show up. He kept on sneezing… maybe he should open a window to air the place out. He was mad worried about Harry, he had never shown up for school and the teachers and Order wouldn’t tell him a damn thing. Things had been so crazy over the summer he hadn’t given his friend much of a thought but with George and Fred back, saved by Malfoy of all people, he had started to wonder if Harry hadn’t run into any trouble as well.
“Ron!” Hermione burst in the door swiftly followed by Professor McGonagall.
“Mione… what’s wrong?” He asked looking from Hermione’s teary face to his Head of House’s grim expression. His parents had looked very similar when they had told him about the twins… he had a bad feeling about this. “Who? Is it Harry?” He asked hollowly.
“It is nothing to panic about. Sit down, Miss Granger; there is no need for tears. The Headmaster will be here shortly.” McGonagall said stiffly, ushering Hermione into a chair and sitting herself in an armchair across the way.
The panicked flutter in his chest lessoned slightly, but Hermione’s sweet face was still streaming with tears and it tore his heart apart. Hesitantly, he reached out and grabbed her hand. He wasn’t sure what he could do to help, but she smiled faintly so he held her hand tighter and waited quietly. Ever since the whole Ministry fiasco Hermione seemed to cling just a little tighter than before and for some reason he always responded the same.
A moment later Dumbledore strolled in brushing black powder from his robes. “Please excuse my tardiness. I was in the process of settling the Potion Professor position; quite the little problem but I think the basement will hold fast.” He sat slowly and gave Hermione and Ron a long look before finally speaking, his tone far more serious. “First, to put you at ease; Harry is well. He was not at home when Privet Drive was attacked and is relaxing in a safe place right now getting over the aftereffects of his exritus. Hopefully he will return within the end of the week.”
He paused a moment to let the information sink in. His next bit of news was far from settling. “I’m afraid that Harry will not be quite the same when he returns.” He held up his hands to stop the barrage of questions Ron and Hermione were about to ask. “I will not go into specifics because it is Harry’s business to tell, but he has gone through quite a traumatic summer with his relatives and he may be very depressed and angry. Understand that his situation is in no way your fault. He may ask to be alone; he may start doing very reckless things. I cannot predict his behaviour; Harry is a very reasonable young man but things have been piling up on him as of late.” Dumbledore sighed and leaned forward in his seat. “You’re friendship is one of the few anchors Harry has. I can’t force you, nor would I want to, but I must ask anyways. Please, treat him as you always have. He needs your support and love now more than ever.”
“Headmaster,” Ron broke in quickly. “It doesn’t matter what’s happened. Harry’s our friend and that’s never going to change.”
Hermione nodded in agreement. “Of, course! I’m just relieved he’s well. I read the article in the Prophet about his house just now, and then Professor McGonagall said you wanted to see me… I was so worried.” She finished in a whisper.
“Yes, it was quite the tragedy. Thankfully the casualties were minimal.” Dumbledore said. He nodded to himself and the twinkle returned to his eyes. “Now for the second reason I’ve asked you here. While investigating the incident at Privet Drive and collecting Harry’s things we happened to run across a few new additions. I believe I can trust you to care for these things until Harry returns, if you’re willing?”
Hermione and Ron exchanged glances before nodding hesitantly at Dumbledore. “What is it exactly?” Hermione asked, her curiosity too great to contain.
“A small array of birds.” Dumbledore said, beaming. “I believe Remus is responsible for the owl but I don’t know where Harry got the ravens. There are two of them and they refused to let us take Harry’s belongings without them accompanying. They are currently in his room with his trunk and I just want to ensure they are fed.”
“But… what happened to Hedwig, Harry’s white owl?” Ron asked in confusion.
“She is resting in the Owlery with a small wound on her leg but it’s nothing to concern yourself with. Now I know you have classes to get to but Minerva has been kind enough to offer her assistance in teaching you two about Harry’s condition. I’m afraid I have other things that need my attention but if you have any questions I’m always here to talk.” With a bright smile, Dumbledore stood and left the room followed by a small trail of dark smoke.
“Uh, Professor?” Hermione asked hesitantly. “I thought Harry was going to…”
Minerva sighed and stood to stand in front of Dumbledore’s desk. “This is not about Mr. Potter’s emotional state so much as his exritus. I’m aware that you all attended the lecture last year on what normally occurs during an exritus. As usual, Mr. Potter has decided to defy all that is natural and has had a transformation… Can I assume you both know of what I speak? Don’t give me that blank look, Mr. Weasley; I know you are well aware of what I mean by transformation.” She said with a sharp look.
Ron blushed sheepishly. “It was the whole Harry transforming… I know what it is.” He mumbled.
“Well I don’t.” Hermione said with a frown. “Why wasn’t it mentioned in the text last year?”
“Because the possibility of it occurring is near impossible. That said, two have officially transformed over the summer and it looks like two more are on the way.” McGonagall leaned back, looking slightly frayed. “Mr. Weasley knows because it is knowledge passed on in the old wizarding houses. With the Black blood in his veins he would have had to learn just in case. I will not get into specifics; you can always look it up if you would like a pass to the Restricted Section. Basically, the magical elements that dwell in the body naturally meld with your cells on a molecular level, which usually leads to interesting results also called a Soul Form. Perhaps you would like to demonstrate?” She waved a hand at Ron who had turned five shades of red and refused to meet Hermione’s eye.
“I—uh…” Ron gave a deep sigh and risked a glance at Hermione. “Don’t freak too much. It’s not a big deal really.” But it was a big deal and he had never wanted his friends to find out and now he was screwed. It was such a big deal his brothers hadn’t even tried to tease him about it. He gave another sigh and let his glamour charms drop.
Hermione’s eyes widened considerably. Her expression blank, she got up and started walking around her best friend. She froze when she got to the appendage twitching behind him and just gaped in silence.
“It’s a— it’s not that weird, a lot of kids have something…” Ron whispered, getting up and trying to gauge his friend’s reaction. “I can hide it; you’ll never have to see it—oh, don’t cry, Mione.” He grabbed his head in frustration, revealing fingers darker than the rest of his skin.
Professor McGonagall wasn’t fazed in the least and continued on as if Ron didn’t have a pointed set of pointy ears and a bushy tail. “As you can see, the Weasleys descendents have extremities that resemble the Floren Demi Fox. If his Black blood had overpowered than he would resemble the Scion Dragon like young Mr. Malfoy does. I can’t say for certain the extent, but I believe our Mr. Potter will most certainly have some sort of resemblance to the Scion Hippogriff given his ancestry.”
Hermione nodded at this new bit of information but Ron could tell she had gotten past shocked to deep in thought. “So… they have magical animals in their bloodlines?” She asked as things started to click.
“Not exactly. The Floren Demi Fox and Ron share one common ancestor that started both bloodlines thousands of years ago. He would be considered a distant cousin to any of the creatures he shares an ancestor with.” She straightened and got to the point. “Harry is as new to this as you are, Miss Granger, and he has just transformed. He will be confused and disoriented. There are new instincts and senses that he will have to cope with along with his other problems. Mr. Weasley, I’m counting on you to help him by relating your own experience and knowledge of the matter. And Miss Granger, if you could refrain from gawking at him like you are Mr. Weasley, I think things will go smoothly.” She said with a wry smile.
Hermione blushed. “Sorry. It’s just a… bit of a shock.” She reached out and hesitantly brushed Ron’s crooked ear. “It’s soft.” She murmured absentmindedly. “Other kids really have this happen too? Why don’t they say anything about it?”
“People get scared.” Ron answered with a shrug. “It means we’re powerful and different, and with all the new muggleborns coming into our society it could be the whole witch hunt thing all over again.”
“But… but… it’s magic! I can’t see what the problem is.” Hermione said exasperated. “If I had known about this right off I would have accepted it just like I did everything else.”
“Perhaps I should field this.” Professor McGonagall broke in. “You’re a little too young to have seen what I have concerning this. I’m sure you’re aware of the idea of pureblood superiority that grips our world? It is not fear of discovery so much as the purebloods’ wish to horde power and keep from losing control. The more one can transform, the more respect and political sway they will eventually hold when they grow older. Believe me, our Minister of Magic has never been anything but of the original lines of Fae Wizards and that’s the way it will stay because muggleborns can’t contest it.
“But yes, fear is a factor but not just for the same reason you have been told. It is common practice to charm away any extra extremities because of the threat they can pose politically. Anyone who has a full transformation has the possibility of being fated as a ruler. Unfortunately, others feel threatened by this and will very likely try to cut these new borns down before they can grow to full power. It has been over a thousand years since we have had to deal with a full transformed exritus and people will not be happy to bend their will to someone just because of an age old law.”
“Than does that make Malfoy…? Fred and George were certain he transformed fully; he can transform to human without magical assistance. Is he a royal?” Ron asked worriedly.
McGonagall frowned, studying her hands thoughtfully. “There was a time when most wizards could transform fully. That alone did not make them royals, so to speak. But with the Black’s line… we have not had the chance to confirm it and I don’t think we ever should. Voldemort is most certainly willing to exploit the assumptions that he is actually the Soul Vigil. The Ministry is playing nice at the moment but I can’t assure what will occur if they ever got a hold of Mr. Malfoy. Let us hope that day never comes. If he is the Soul Vigil he would ideally be treated as such and a great symbol of a new age for the wizarding world. It would also force him to fight Voldemort to the death as well as anyone else who would threaten our world.” She left the fact that he most likely wouldn’t survive unsaid.
“As for Harry and the other two, I don’t think they’ll have any problem if it’s all kept quiet, which is why you need to help Harry. Malfoy was high profile; he was expected to transform ever since Voldemort set his sights on him. I’m afraid that the damage has already been done ever since that article in the paper.”
“Is he coming back? I think… I think we should help him if we can.” Ron said hesitantly, worrying his lip. His brothers had been saved because of Draco Malfoy; he may not like the git but his family owed him. “Will he be safe at Hogwarts?”
“I don’t know.” McGonagall said honestly. “It has been a long time since faced with this situation. The Ministry may not allow it. Malfoy may be classified as a magical non-human sentient being. If so, he will lose his rights in our world including lose of his lands, possibly even exile. He would not be able to attend school any longer.”
“But that’s not fair! He was born human; they can’t just—!”
“I’m afraid if the Ministry can, they will do their worst, Hermione. They’ve had years to destroy any laws that could protect Mr. Malfoy and his kind. By having people like Ron with small transformations afraid to reveal themselves, they are destroying the symbolic link between human and what Mr. Malfoy has become in the eyes of the public. Do you think magical beings were always treated as such? It was only the last two thousand years when we started splitting. With the decision to hide our world from the muggles, they used the obvious physical differences of the magical beings as an excuse to separate them from our world. Once that was established, rights were slowly taken away. With the addition of lies and their different and sometimes shocking cultures, people stopped questioning and the magical creatures began to resent us. It seems things may never be back to how it was before.”
She blinked away from her dark thoughts at the sound of light chimes rang from one of Dumbledore’s instruments. “Oh dear, we’re all going to be late for our next class.” With a flourish, she wrote a quick note on a spare piece of parchment. “I can tell from your expression you’ll be wanting more information Miss Granger. I suggest you start with anything you can find on the Fae.” She ushered them to the door.
“Wait.” Ron asked quickly. “The other two to transform, who are they?”
“I think whoever makes a trip to the infirmary and has yet to return for at least a week would be your first guess.” She said pointedly. “This information does not get out. I will not have anyone’s lives jeopardized because you two suddenly have the urge to gossip… Mr. Weasley, you may want to take care of those.” She said with a wave to his ears.
“Oh… ha, forgot about that.” He said with a small laugh. “It feels so natural.” He quickly charmed himself to look human, missing Hermione’s curious look.
“Professor, did you have a transformation during your exritus?” Hermione asked.
McGonagall smiled tightly. “Of course, Miss Granger. I have quite the brilliant set of retractable claws. Come along.” Once down the stairs she sent them on their way. She had her own business to deal with before her class began and quickly made her way to speak with Firenze.
