The Secret Keeper
Sirius sat at the picnic table and silently watched James play with the boys. It had been a year since James had seen the premonition of his own death. If James was bothered by it he certainly hid it well. But Sirius was bothered. Every morning that he woke up he was afraid that someone was going to tell him that James, Lily, and young Harry were gone. James was still keeping this from Lily, and everyone else. He hadn’t even said anything when Dumbledore told them that he thought they needed to put a fidelus charm on their house and go into hiding. The only thing he did that was out of character was he didn’t argue. Dumbledore seemed a little suspicious, but everyone else just figured that he didn’t argue because he wanted to protect his family. Sirius’ insides burned to just scream out what James wouldn’t say. But he somehow had managed to keep quiet. He had even bitten his tongue when James suggested making him their secret keeper. To Sirius that was suicide. Everybody and their brother knew how close he was to James. What would stop someone from torturing the information out of him?
He had told James about his concerns privately, but the stubborn man had just shrugged it off. He said the plan was brilliant because of how suicidal it seemed. No one would ever suspect that someone as crafty and resourceful as him would choose such an obvious secret keeper. But Sirius was still worried.
He had spent the last year trying to figure out how to stop James’ premonition from coming true; and he was sure he had finally found the answer. Gathering up his courage; he stood and moved over to where Lily was standing talking to Arthur about garbage disposals. She turned to face him when he put his hand on her shoulder. “Oh Hello Sirius,” she smiled. “Did you want something?”
The dark haired wizard nodded. “Yes, I wanted to talk to you about something privately.”
“Okay,” she answered looking a little confused.
“You can use our bedroom,” Arthur offered.
“Thanks,” Sirius nodded as he led Lily into the house and up the stairs into a tiny little bedroom that was crowded with furniture.
“What did you want to talk to me about?” she asked with a curious look.
“I wanted to talk to you about me being secret keeper.”
“Oh, is that all,” she grinned with relief. “You’re still nervous about it aren’t you?”
Sirius closed his eyes and hung his head. In the past year, there was never a moment when he wanted to tell her about the premonition more than he did at that moment. He had to somehow talk her into his plan without letting her know the real reason; and it wasn’t going to be easy.
“I’m just concerned,” he sighed as he opened his eyes and forced himself to look at her again. “You know I love him with everything in me, but he’s too arrogant for his own good.”
Lily chuckled softly. “No arguments here.”
Sirius reached out to grab her hands and hold them in his own. “I don’t think I should be your secret keeper anymore.”
“Sirius,” she sighed in frustration. “How many times have we been over this? I know you’re worried, and it’s sweet, but James chose you for a reason. I don’t know why you’re coming to me about this.”
“Because….” He cursed himself silently for agreeing to keep the stupid secret; then he cursed James for not telling her himself. “Because I have a very bad feeling. I don’t think he’s taking the situation as seriously as he should. I know he loves you and Harry more than anything, but you just agreed with me that he’s arrogant at times. He probably thinks that he can protect you should anything happen. But I love all three of you dearly, and I just don’t want to take a chance. Please….” He pleaded with her, a few hot tears welling up in his eyes.
She reached up to gently brush away his tears. “You’re really worried aren’t you?” she sighed as she plopped herself down on Arthur and Molly’s bed. “What did you have in mind?”
“Well, I spoke to Peter Pettigrew the other day, and even though he and James haven’t had much contact since we graduated from school, he’s quite willing to do it.”
“Peter?” Lily asked, hardly daring to believe he was really asking what he was asking. “Sirius, I don’t think that would be such a good idea. James won’t even let him in the house since Harry was born. When he tried to come over and see Harry I was afraid James was going to kill him.”
He sat down beside her and put his arm around her shoulders. “And that’s why it’s so perfect. As far as anyone knows, James would rather have all of his teeth ripped from his mouth than have Peter as his secret keeper.”
“That’s because he would,” Lily answered with a doubtful scowl.
“Well he doesn’t have to know does he?”
“And just how do you intend to pull this off?”
“I thought you could send me an owl the next time James goes to visit Lucius and I could bring Peter over and do it before James gets back.”
Lily turned away, pretending to study a picture of Bill and Charlie that was hanging up on the wall. After a long silence she turned back to face him. “If you’re really that concerned about it, then okay. I just want it known that I’m not thrilled about going behind my husband’s back.”
Sirius grabbed her and hugged her tight; kissing her on the forehead. “Thank you Lily!” he cried out. “You won’t regret it!”
“I have a feeling that I will,” she mumbled quietly to herself.
Sirius practically flew down the stairs. A huge weight had just been lifted off his chest. He had gotten Lily to go along with his plan to save James, and he didn’t even have to tell her the secret he promised to keep.

James sat on the ground with Harry sitting in his lap. He watched Bill and Charlie flying around on the brooms he had just given them. He enjoyed spending time with the kids. It took his mind off everything else. Then Harry started to get restless and fussy. James stood up and looked around. “Where’s Lily?” he asked Bill.
The oldest Weasley boy shrugged. “I don’t see her.”
“Good.” James grinned as he grabbed the harness and put it on, setting Harry in it so he rested against his chest. Then he picked up his own broom and mounted it.
The boys watched in awe as he took off like a rocket; soaring higher then they had ever dared to go. They stared up into the sky as he became a tiny speck in the sky. Then he turned into a steep dive, plummeting back to earth at an alarming speed. He pulled up only a few feet from the ground and zoomed past the boys like a flash. He did one more dive before landing gently on the ground. Harry was giggling and clapping his hands together with glee.
“That was awesome Uncle James,” Charlie grinned up at him in admiration.
“But don’t tell Aunt Lily. Harry loves flying as much as I do, but she won’t let me take him higher than four feet off the ground.”
Harry, now realizing that he was back on the ground, started to scream and kick in protest. With a sigh James mounted his broom again, rising up only a few feet from the ground and flying in a slow circle. He knew Harry wouldn’t be satisfied with it, but he also knew that if Lily caught him going any higher he would be a dead man.
