Both Sides.
CH 31 Does the sun still shine?
Cassia knocked on the door. “The master will tell you miss.” Was all the elf said as the door opened and Lou was floated in and placed on a large armchair. It dwarfed her, and like in her bed, she all but disappeared into it.
‘I feel like a blasted gnome.’ She thought.
“I assure you, you do not look like one. They are disgusting ugly little creatures.”
Lou looked up wide eyed, she’d not seen him when she was brought in, and he appeared in front of her without making a sound. “Err …hi. Thank you for making my leg better …again. Are you gonna tell me off now?”
“No Lou, I am not. So your anguish on the way downstairs was for nought.”
“Oh. What do you want to shout at me …err …talk to me about then? You do want to talk, your not angry or anything?”
“I only wish to talk, calm down.” He told her, taking the seat opposite. “While you were indisposed, I have had time to think, about …”
He stood and rubbed a hand over his face before getting back up and starting to pace.
“About us I suppose. Lou I pushed you away for a reason, that reason was not to intentionally hurt you, it was to protect you.”
He gave a glance in her direction, trying to gauge her reaction so far.
“It would seem my endeavour was fruitless. All it did was cause you emotional pain, it made me uncomfortable, and did nothing of what it was meant to do in the first place.”
Lou watched his boots as they paced the floor, back and forth, back and forth, as she tried, struggled, to process what he was telling her. She wished now he’d told her off, it would have been easier to understand then what he was telling her now.
Her voice was choked, husky when she spoke.
“So …all the …all the …when you said you didn’t want me to write, when you said you wasn’t coming back …you said you didn’t want me, I’m a burden, that’s what you told me. You were my friend and you shut me out, now your saying it was …what? A mistake, a joke, an accident, what? Tell me please because I don’t understand. Am I in danger now? Do they know I’m here? There coming for me aren’t they, that’s why your telling me this. I’m gonna be killed slowly like you told the Headmaster because they know where I am.”
“No. No. No. You are wrong, about most of it anyway. Lou please stop panicking and listen to me. No one knows where you are apart from myself and Albus Dumbledore. Yes, it was a mistake to push you away like I did, a big mistake. We thought it better at the time, that you would be forced to make new friends and keep you safe in as much as I would not have to hide you from my mind when I was summoned to the Dark Lords side. He knows now that you exist, and I am the one who informed him of that fact.”
“What? But why? Why did you do that? Am I so bad that you …”
“Lou please, hear me out. He was soon to find out of your existence anyway, by telling him first, I have secured my position in his ranks. He knows that you are the last descendant of the Nilsen family, and that you are a ward of Albus Dumbledore. He does not, and will not know your whereabouts, although he realises that you will attend Hogwarts, but no matter, you will be safe there. He does not yet know you are the daughter of Sirius Black, or that you were the one who assisted me in Spinners End. When you begin at Hogwarts however, the name Black will be revealed. I intend to inform the Dark Lord myself before then.”
“You’d probably be dead if he knew it was me at Spinners, and if it helps you telling him my name, I‘m all for it. I saw what he did to you last time remember, whatever you’ve done, or do, I still don’t want you to be hurt or killed. You stopped being my friend, I didn’t stop being yours.”
“manus manum lavat Professor.” (one situation helps another)
“You put me to shame girl, do you know that?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. Does this mean you’re my friend again? Or are you just telling me all this so I know?”
“I too did not stop being your friend, I just was not able to let you know. But yes, I would like to be your friend again, if you can bring yourself to trust me.”
“It took a lot to give you my trust the first time, but I’ll try. You once told me, trust is a hard thing to earn, do you remember? When we went flying?”
“I do, and I can ask no more than that. A toast I think, but if you ever tell anyone I gave you alcohol, I shall say that you stole it.”
“Cool, I wont tell. What are we having?”
He walked over to a cabinet and touched his hand to a small panel on the door. It opened and he withdrew a bottle of fire whiskey and two glasses.
“All of the drinks cabinets are warded to my personal signature, so it would be pointless to try and gain access to them.” He warned her.
He called an elf and told it to bring a jug of water. He poured himself a generous measure of the amber fluid, and for Lou, a minuscule amount, well watered down.
“I won’t taste it with all that water. Can’t I have a bit more?”
“No you cannot, it is that or nothing. To us, friendship, and the fight against the Dark.” He told her, raising his glass.
“Stercus accidit” (shit happens)
She replied with a cheeky grin, raising her own and drinking it down.
“Indeed, but do not let me hear you say that again, even if it is in Latin.”
He removed the empty glass from her hand and poured himself another measure.
Lou looked up hopefully, but he scourgified her glass then replaced it, and the bottle in the cabinet and closed it.
“Can’t I have another?”
“No.”
“Your having another.”
“Correct.”
Lou sighed. There was no point in pursuing this, he wouldn’t give in.
“Correct again.” He told her, walking to a shelf and selecting a book. Taking it to his chair, he sat down and opened it at random. “Tell me how to brew the wolfsbane potion.”
“Huh?” She gave a small snort of laughter as she looked at Severus.
“Wolfsbane. I want the recipe, preparation, and brewing process, now.”
Lou told him the ingredients needed, the preparation process, what and when to add each ingredient and the correct colour and consistency at each stage. When she first began, she faltered, but as she went on, she spoke confidently. “How did I know that? I don’t know that. I can’t, I never did that one. I don’t understand.”
“How would you re-pot a mandrake?”
She told him, a frown on her face.
He asked her a multitude of questions on charms, transfiguration, ancient runes. All the subjects he instilled with the spell, up to the highest level, he questioned her.
Lou answered each one correctly. “Please tell me how I know all this? It’s like my heads full of stuff now that I didn’t know I knew. I think.”
“An oath. An oath that you will never reveal what I am about to tell you.”
“Another one?” She asked amazed. “If oaths were food I’d be fat. Alright.” She said, taking out her wand again. “I Louhi Melaina Nilsen-Black, promise to never reveal what you are about to tell me.”
A swirl of magic came from her wand and swathed her, before going back into the wand.
While you were under the effects of the sleeping potion, I took the liberty of invoking an ancient family spell on you. No one outside of my family has ever benefited from this spell before you. You now have four years of magical education in charms, transfiguration, herbology and ancient runes. Plus rudimentary knowledge of fifth year education in those four subjects. In addition to those, you have five years of magical creatures and rudimentary sixth year.
Defence against the dark arts, history of magic, arithmancy and of course, potions, you have full advanced first to seventh year education. Also a subject not taught at Hogwarts, the dark arts themselves. Your knowledge on this subject is extensive, and you will reveal it to no one.”
“I do? I mean do I? But I can’t have, I’ve never …a spell. Why?”
“Because you needed them. The way things have panned out, you would not have a chance to reach the standard required to join your fifth year counterparts. Second year perhaps, third if you were lucky. The advanced subjects were instilled because I fear that you will need that knowledge in the near future.”
“Muggle studies, you have no need of that, likewise Divination, you would never make it into Trellawney’s tower anyway. Flying, that is down to Madam Hooch and whatever adaptations she can make to your broom.”
“You now have control over one third of your magical ability, this was also done while you were under sedation. It proved to be a fruitful task and it would be deemed wise to give you further increases in the same manner. I would like to give you one more subject to complete your education tonight. It will be for my benefit more than it is for yours, that is why I am telling you.”
“Can I swear?”
“No.”
“Just a little swear.”
“No.”
“Can I at least think a little swear?”
“No.”
“Why will I need the seventh year advanced …I can’t remember what you said they were? Is something gonna happen?”
“Possibly. It is merely a precaution.”
“You didn’t say precaution, you said you think I’m gonna need them soon. What’s gonna happen?”
“As yet, I do not know that anything will, I am merely erring on the side of caution.”
“And I’ve got more magic? What do I do with it?”
“For now, you will do as your peers do. Learn, practice, learn some more.”
“You’re not really telling me anything you know.”
“I know.”
“Humph. Well what about this other one you want me to have?”
“Medi-witch training. More than likely, I shall have need of your services in the future. Should I return from meeting with the Dark Lord in a not too satisfactory condition, you will do what is necessary until I am able to care for myself. The less I need to involve the school medi-witch, the better. I was originally going to do this spell for the duration of your stay here, but since I shall not be summoned now for a number of months, I thought it best to look to the future. Are you agreeable to this one final piece to your education?”
“Yes.” She told him instantly. “Why wouldn’t I be? I want to help you, you know that, I would just prefer that you didn’t see him at all. Can’t someone else go instead?”
“Lou there is no one else, otherwise I would gladly give the task over to them.”
“And putting me to sleep when you increase my magic, it was better?”
“It was. Your unconscious mind instinctively took control with hardly any effect.”
“So I didn’t stick to the ceiling or anything silly like that?”
“No. A glow, a small crackle, nothing more.”
“Professor?”
He raised a questioning eyebrow in response.
“What will happen when I’ve got all my magic? Will I be dangerous? Because I don’t want to be.”
He sighed and sat forward in his seat. “Therein lies the crux of your answer. You do not wish to be dangerous Louhi, therefore you need not be. What you do with your abilities depends on you. If, as we suspect, you are extremely powerful, you will also need to keep a tight rein on your temper. If you do not, you could, and most likely would kill someone unintentionally. Yet if you are able to take control, you could in time, possibly help us rid our world of the terrible darkness we are fighting against.”
“You mean Voldemort? I could help you get rid of him?”
“It is only a possibility.”
“You know I’ll do anything to help, I’ll do whatever you tell me if it helps stop all this …him.. What did he say about me?”
“Who?”
“Voldemort. You said you had to tell him I exist, what did he say?”
Lou knew it wasn’t good when Severus stood and started pacing again.
When he spoke, he spoke quietly, but Lou heard every word he said.
“I am to keep a close eye on you, gain your confidence. Then hopefully encourage you to join his ranks.”
“You had to agree didn‘t you? I understand that. I don’t mind pretending that I’m interested in joining him, not if it helps you.”
“Lou you should not be so eager to do this. What you are suggesting is dangerous, deadly even. I agreed yes, it does not mean I will do as he says.”
“But you have to, if you don’t, he’ll kill you. Hasn‘t he done enough to you? I don‘t want you killed or crucio‘d or beaten. I lo …care about you too much. ”
His eyes narrowed slightly at what she almost said. He chose not to comment on it. “Most likely, but it is preferable to the alternative.”
“What alternative.”
“He would want to see you, give you the mark. He would have control over you Lou and I cannot allow that. I will not allow it.”
“I won’t always be fifteen you know. If what my mum said in that letter is true, then he’s gonna have a hell of a time trying to control me when I’ve got all my magic and I’m of age. Until then, I’ll tell him I’m not ready to take the mark. What is the mark?”
Severus rolled up his left sleeve to show her. “When he calls, it turns black and burns, excruciatingly so. He does not let up until one is in his presence, or dead. Also, you do not tell the Dark Lord that you are not yet ready for anything, he will tell you.”
“Either way, it looks like we haven’t got a choice. I know I’m only fifteen, I know I haven’t got the experience you and the other witches and wizards have of this Voldemort, but if I don’t make as if I’m interested in what he’s doing, he’s gonna take it out on you. Then I’ll be left on my own and someone else will try and persuade me instead. I don’t want to lose you Sever …Professor. I won‘t. I can‘t.” She told him, her eyes tearing up as she fought miserably to control her emotions.
He stopped pacing and turned his back on her, his own emotions now threatening to overwhelm him.
He snapped his fingers and Cassia appeared. “Take care of her.” He snapped and left the room without looking back.
He stalked out of the manor and into the gardens, his jaw clenched painfully as he struggled to control his feelings. No one had ever cared about him with the amount of passion Lou had expressed just now. Even his own mother, as much as she loved him, had not been so dedicated as to risk her life for him. To be willing to submit herself to anything rather than see him harmed in any way.
Lou looked at Cassia without really seeing her. She’d messed up, she was convinced of it. He’d walked out on her again, just when she’d offered him her all. She’d told the truth when she said she’d do whatever it took to keep him safe, she didn’t want him to be hurt anymore. He probably thought she was just some stupid kid who didn’t know anything, wasn’t capable of doing anything helpful. Not that she really blamed him, she’d done so many stupid childish things lately it was no wonder he thought that way.
So how could she convince him she was serious, that she could, and would do what was necessary? Lou had no idea.
“Cassia, where did the Professor go?”
“In the garden miss. You want I should get you something?”
“No, thanks anyway. I think I’ve just messed up big time again Cassia. He’s gone.”
“Master is only in the garden miss, like you, he needs time for his thinking.”
“What do you mean?”
“Cassia can say no more, cannot reveal the masters secrets. He tells you in his own time.”
“What’s it like outside Cassia? Is the sun shining? I haven’t been out for so long, I’ve forgotten what it’s like.”
“Is very nice day miss.”
“Do you know what date it is Cassia? What day? I don’t.”
“Is Saturday, August 26th miss.”
“Do you know how many times I’ve been outside this summer Cassia? Once. I did some weeding and found flowers hiding underneath. That’s the only time, at least outside in a garden. I start school in five days. I don’t suppose …?”
“Cassia can only takes you out with the masters permission miss.”
“Will you ask him for me, please Cassia?”
The elf refused to leave Lou on her own, but she called another elf and sent him with a message to the master, requesting that the miss be allowed to go outside.
Lou didn’t expect Severus to come back inside. She thought he’d just send a message saying yes or no. Probably no. Her head shot up when he entered the library.
“Why do you want to go outside?”
“I just do. I only got to go out once at the house and I thought it would be nice. It doesn’t matter, I’ll do something else instead.” She said, disappointed.
“Of course it matters. Cassia, bring her into the garden by the lake, and have cold drinks and sandwiches sent out. We shall have lunch al-fresco today. And have the gazebo moved, I believe someone mentioned that she tends to imitate a lobster if she has too much sun.”
Lou’s face lit up. “I can go out? And a picnic, brilliant, thank you.”
“It is the least I can do.”
He picked her up and carried from the library, through the main hall and out into the garden.
“It’s bigger than the one at Hogwarts, where does it end? Does it end?”
Severus chuckled deeply. “Yes it ends, and it certainly keeps the elf’s busy. I take it you admire my grounds?”
“Admire, I’m jealous. It’s more like a city park, only bigger. It should be full of people, not empty and hidden.”
“I prefer my privacy Lou, I would think you realise that by now.”
“I do, but don’t you have parties and things? I thought all rich people had garden parties and stuff like that.”
“Certain among us enjoy displaying their wealth, I do not. If the Dark Lord knew of my true wealth and status, he would be demanding I contribute heavily to his cause. That is not something I am willing to do. It is better everyone believes I survive on a teachers salary and no more. Very few know I am more than just a Professor, I would prefer it to stay that way.”
“I won’t tell anyone if that’s what you’re worried about. Do you want me to take another of those oaths? I will if you don’t trust me enough yet.”
“Lou, if I did not trust you, I would not have told you in the first place.”
He laid her on a sun lounger under the gazebo the elf’s had set next to the lake.
“Ooo. Is that your lake too”
“It is. Everything for a hundred miles in each direction belongs to this estate.”
Lou’s jaw dropped almost to her chest. “I’m glad you’re rich.”
“And why would that be?”
“Because it means you’re not being friends with me just because I am. Not that I thought you was, but I’m just saying.” She added shame facedly. “That sounded awful, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.” He laughed. “I understand. It is common to have others latch onto you for wealth, it is another reason I prefer to keep my affairs private.”
“I’m gonna do that, then if anyone makes friends with me, it wont be for money will it?”
“Unfortunately, you will not have that luxury. The entire wizarding world knows of the Nilsen fortunes. Not many can equal them.”
“So how will I know if people like me for me?”
