Chapter 31
Severus had never been confronted by anything so beautiful in his life.
Kathy wore a sheer, full length, silver crystal organza cloak, that shimmered at the slightest movement, over a hunter green gown that just reached the toes of her shoes, also in dark green velvet with green satin rosettes attached on top. A full, gathered flowing skirt in rich velvet, was halted at her abdomen by a ’V’ waisted, ruched satin bodice. Over that was more of the rich velvet, that started at her cleavage, and draped in soft folds around the edge of her shoulders, leaving her upper shoulders and neck bare. Her hair was piled loosely on top of her head in a mass of soft curls and when she turned slowly for him, he notice the curls were held in place by a silver and green entwined band. She wore a tiny bit of green eye shadow that seemed to enhance her deep velvety brown eyes, and a touch of pink lipstick so pale it was difficult to know if it was really there.
Her eyes shone and her creamy skin seemed to glow in the torchlight. There was no visible sign of the erotic satin bodysuit she wore, but Severus knew it was there. He hoped she wore knickers over it. Or did he?
“You look… stunning. Beautiful. Incredible.” He said breathlessly.
The light blush that appeared on her cheeks only added to her appeal and Severus felt himself harden again. He desperately willed it to go down.
“And you look very handsome Severus.” Actually she thought he looked more than handsome, breathtaking was closer to what entered her mind when she opened her door.
One look in her eyes told him her praise was genuine. “Shall we.” He offered his arm, all previous worries about being noticed now forgotten.
“What about the masks?” She asked, holding out her own, a simple dark green velvet mask, edged with silver and moulded to cover her eyes and part of her nose, and tuck under the light curls that graced her forehead.
Severus could have kicked himself. In all his preparations for the ball he’d still not even unwrapped his own mask. “Just… give me a minute. I’ll be right back.” He said, backing up towards his rooms, careening with the door frame and running through his living room, almost falling over the sofa in his haste.
He was slightly more composed on his return, though panting slightly. Kathy had donned her mask since Severus now wore his, and after giving her a another sweep of his eyes, she took his proffered arm. He noticed the dark green varnish on her nails as they made their way from the dungeons.
Kathy was stunned when they reached the Main Hall. Literally hundreds of witches and wizards filled almost every space, all ages, sizes, and shapes. The array of colours from the multitude of gowns was dazzling.
“Not one will hold a candle beside you tonight Kathy. They are as dying stars in comparison to you.”
Kathy had never heard anything so romantic, especially concerning her and she wasn’t sure how to respond. Instead she squeezed his arm and offered up a small smile, her eyes shining and the pink glow back in her cheeks. Though that could have been from climbing the one hundred odd steps from the dungeons.
Just as they entered the Main entrance, the doors to the Great Hall were thrown open and the huge crowd dwindled as they moved inside.
Kathy had never been allowed this far into the castle before and her first sight of the main stairwells, the walls covered with portraits she was convinced were moving, took her breath away. Then her attention was caught by the soft music filtering through from the hall and she held tighter to Severus’ arm.
He in turn covered her hand with his other hand, letting her know that he was by her side and allaying her fears slightly.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.” She whispered.
“Wait until you enter the hall, you will change your mind.”
Kathy didn’t think so, but she did when it was their turn to enter.
She was almost overcome come at the sight that met her. The fact she could see the night sky was immediately apparent and stared agog for several moments wondering if she was imagining things. Then she noticed the yards and yards of white silk that draped the walls as well as floating freely above their heads, gathered every so often with posies of white and pink carnations.
Clusters of round tables were draped in the same material, place settings in shining gold at each one, a smaller posy of carnations set in the centre and soft candle light from the millions of candles that also floated above their heads.
Severus was relieved to note the lack of cherubs and pink hearts everywhere as he proudly walked her through the throng of guests , students, and tables.
In her awe, Kathy had not even noticed the constant chattering until it quieted. When she looked around to discover the majority of masked faces confronting them both quite openly, she almost froze to the spot.
Severus felt her sudden tension and smoothly glided her across the hall to where Albus, Minerva and several others he could just recognise were seated.
The chatter picked up again and Kathy felt a bit more at ease when she recognised a few faces behind the masks at their table. At least there was no mistaking the bright red hair of the Weasley’s. Severus took the organza cloak from her shoulders and draped it over his arm as he pulled out a chair for her and she sat down, smiling nervously at him as he took his own seat beside her.
He took her hand beneath the table and patted it reassuringly, Kathy in turn held onto it and refused to let go. Severus did not resist, instead he pulled her hand into his lap and held it there.
Albus welcomed her, followed by Minerva, Molly and Arthur, and she was introduced to several of the other staff who also sat at their table. She was presented as Mrs Ripley, a god friend of Severus’, but no other explanation was given to those who did not previously know her.
After the introductions were made, Albus stood and tapped the side of a glass to get everyone’s attention. This time the hall was completely silent as the wizard welcomed them all to the St. Valentines Day ball. He wished them all a good evening and hoped they would enjoy the delicious individual cuisine which would be prepared especially for tonight.
Severus took a menu and offered it to her, whilst taking another for himself.
Kathy looked at it then down at the multitude of cutlery on each place setting.
Severus leaned over to whisper in her ear. “Would you do me the honour of allowing me to order for both of us this evening?”
She shivered visibly as his warm breath tickled her neck, sending shocks running down every nerve in her body. It did not go unnoticed.
“Yes.” She answered in a high pitched squeak and wanted to kick herself.
As Severus perused the menu, Kathy watched as the others spoke to their individual menu’s. She was about to ask Severus why they were doing so when food began to appear on their plates. Then Severus spoke quietly into his own menu and several crystal dishes appeared in front of them, along with two glasses of white wine.
Forced to release her hand, he politely draped a napkin over her knee and she waited for him to pick up his fork before copying. He speared a honey and orange liqueur soaked melon ball and popped it into his mouth, so she did the same.
Kathy had never tasted anything like it, she didn’t have any idea what it was but she quickly took another.
Severus smiled inwardly at the look of bliss on her face at her first taste of melon, and most likely honey. He couldn’t prevent the image of something else sliding past those lips and tried not look too closely at her as he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
Next were large juicy prawns dipped in a sweet chilli sauce which took her by surprise, burning her mouth and making her eyes water. She quickly drank down the glass of wine.
Severus ate the prawns while Kathy finished the melon balls.
The dishes disappeared and were replaced by others. Bowls of fresh steaming vegetables, a long salver containing a large sea bream on a bed of lettuce and tender sweetcorn, baby new potato’s dripping with minted butter, and of course, more wine.
Severus served them both and watched as she studied the asparagus. She again waited for him to select his cutlery and followed suit.
Her first taste of asparagus proved to be a pleasurable experience for her, and a nightmare for him as he watched it disappear. It was a decidedly long spear and she did not bite into it, rather she took the whole thing inch by inch into her mouth.
He adamantly refused to watch her any longer. Still, his eyes strayed back when she took another. ’Gods I’m going to embarrass myself if she keeps this up.’
Kathy had no idea she was having an effect on Severus, she was just enjoying the new tastes and textures of these strange, new foods. She was also enjoying the wine and the fact that her glass was never completely empty. Fortunately she could hold her drink, but did not go overboard with the wine. She didn’t fancy the idea of being drunk before the meal was over, or even at all this evening.
By the time the entrée was finished Kathy was full, but yet more food appeared on their plates.
This time Severus sliced into a piece of coffee liqueur soaked sponge, dripping with fresh cream and Kathy tried that too. Her eyes widened at the taste, it was heavenly. She eagerly had several bites of that.
It was followed by small amounts of vanilla sugared kiwi, and tiny pastries filled with custard and lightly drizzled with warm, melted chocolate.
“Severus that was delicious, but I couldn’t eat another thing.”
“I am pleased you enjoyed my choice of cuisine, though I still prefer what you make on a day to day basis.”
“Are you kidding, I could never make anything like this. I don’t even know what half of those things were.” She whispered.
This time it was Severus’ turn to experience the shockwaves caused by her breath on his ear.
