Sirius was thrilled to have everyone at Grimmauld Place
for Christmas. He had the entire place
cleaned up and festively decorated by Christmas Eve. Harry seemed to be in a better mood as well,
which was a relief for everyone.
Christmas morning went well, except for one thing. Molly sent a sweater to Percy as usual, but this year he had
returned it. Molly stood in the kitchen
over the stove, tears streaming down her cheeks. Fred and George tried to comfort her, but
soon gave up and left the task to Remus.
Eventually Molly calmed down and the kids came for
breakfast. “Here’s the plan,” James
addressed them. “First we’re going to
visit Arthur in St. Mungo’s. Then everyone is invited to Malfoy Manor for
Christmas dinner.”
“Is it safe?” Hermione asked, remembering that Harry hadn’t
been allowed to go there over the summer.
James nodded.
“Yes, it’s safe. Lucius is fairly
certain he won’t have any visitors over the Holidays.”
“Well then if we’re invited we should go,” Molly said, trying
to sound more sure about it than she felt.
They were giving Lucius a chance for James’ sake, but there was too much
bad history to be forgotten easily.
Their visit with Arthur was short and sweet. The Healers still hadn’t quite figured out
how to get his wounds to close and stop bleeding. The apprentice Healer had talked him into
trying muggle stitches, which hadn’t worked well at all.
Molly was livid when she found out, and everyone slipped
away while she yelled at her husband.
Molly could be quite scary when she was angry.
Once everyone had wandered back they said their goodbyes
and headed for Malfoy Manor. Lucius had
arranged for Portkeys to take them straight to the
Manor gates. Even though Lucius was
pretty sure his Floo wasn’t being watched, he still
wanted to be cautious.
James led the way to the large oak doors and rand the
doorbell. Everyone else stared up at the
place in awe. A house elf answered the
door and led them to the dining room.
“This place is massive,” Fred commented as he and the others looked
around while they walked.
Lucius and Draco were waiting at the table which was
laden with delicious smelling food.
“You’re just in time,” Lucius smiled.
“Where’s Narcissa?” James
asked, not seeing the blonde woman.
“She umm… decided to stay up in her room,” Lucius
answered, blushing slightly.
Narcissa may
have been all right with James staying there, but a house full of people she
wasn’t used to consorting with was a bit more than she could handle.
James sighed and took the seat next to Lucius. Draco motioned for Harry, Hermione, and Ron
to sit by him.
“How are you?” Draco asked Harry, glad to be able to talk
to him again.
“All right I guess,” Harry answered sullenly. “This hasn’t exactly been my best year at
school.”
Draco frowned.
“I’m sorry. It’s really unfair
how Umbridge has been treating you. The Slytherins hate
her too though.”
For the next few hours the room was filled with the
clinking of utensils on plates and the soft murmur of conversation. Lucius was surprised to find that it wasn’t
hard to be polite and friendly with everyone.
Now that he was happy whatever had compelled him to be so nasty was
gone. He liked having everyone there,
and he didn’t want them to leave.
“Ugh, I’m too full to move,” Sirius groaned as he sat
back in his chair.
“Then don’t,” Lucius said.
Sirius raised an eyebrow at his cousin-in-law. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying maybe you should all stay the night.”
The room suddenly went quiet and everyone stared at
Lucius. He couldn’t help but blush a
little. “I mean it. We have plenty of space for everyone.”
James took Lucius’ hand. “I’ll stay if Harry will.”
Harry shrugged.
“Yeah, I’ll stay too.” He was
having such a good time with Draco that he didn’t want to leave anyway.
One by one the others decided to stay as well. Lucius was on top of the world as he sent
house elves to make up beds for everyone.
Then he had them set up chairs in the parlor so everyone could go there
to have drinks and relax after dinner.
James headed to the kitchen to make up a batch of his
special eggnog.
“If you’re making what I think you are, make some for the
children too,” Molly called out after him.
James returned with two bowls of eggnog floating behind
him; one red and one green. “The red stuff
is my own special blend,” he explained.
“And the green stuff is for the children. Harry, you can have some of the red stuff if
you want.”
“Draco, you may have some too,” Lucius said as he poured
himself a glass.
Harry got himself a glass of red eggnog, not sure why
Molly wanted a separate bowl for the children.
How different could his dad’s mix really be?
His question was answered when he took a big gulp and
started to choke. “What’s in this?” he
asked when he could finally breathe again.
“One part traditional eggnog, two parts spiced rum,”
James smiled as he took a big swig.
Remus chuckled.
“It just wouldn’t be Christmas without your dad getting completely
smashed.”
Less than an hour later James was completely smashed, and he and Sirius were dancing in the
middle of the room singing Christmas Carols.
Remus sat with Molly who was guarding the red eggnog in vain. Each of the younger Weasleys had managed to
sneak at least one glass.
Harry had never had anything stronger than butter beer
before and the alcohol hit him hard. He
sipped the rest of his glass and eventually the room was spinning. He stopped drinking
Draco seemed to be more used to stronger stuff and when
Harry tried to stand up the blonde was able to catch him when he almost fell.
“Thanks,” Harry mumbled.
“No problem,” Draco nodded. “Are you all right?”
Harry nodded. “I think I just need to lie down.”
Draco held Harry steady and helped him up the
stairs. Without even really thinking
about it he took Harry to his bedroom.
Harry was too drunk to notice anything but the comfy
looking bed Draco helped him into.
“Better?” Draco asked.
Harry grunted and nodded.
For the first time in a long time he was completely relaxed. He kind of liked the feeling. He was only barely aware of Draco crawling
into bed next to him.
“You’ll never guess what happened before I left school,”
Harry blurted out with a wide grin.
“What?” Draco asked as he made himself comfortable.
“Cho kissed me!” Harry shouted with glee. “It was my first kiss.”
“Oh,” Draco sighed.
He suddenly hated Cho more than he had the day he saw her talking to
Harry in the hall. “Do you like her?”
Harry nodded.
“She’s so pretty. I wanted to ask
her to the ball last year. Well I did,
but Cedric asked her first. But now I
think she likes me.”
Draco suddenly felt like crying. Then abruptly he rolled over on top of Harry
and kissed him hard. The kiss lasted
several seconds before Draco sat up and waited for Harry’s
reaction.
Harry’s eyes were wide as he stared up at Draco in
shock. “Harry, I like you,” Draco
blurted out and then he held his breath as he anticipated Harry’s
reply.
Harry remained quiet for several minutes, a thoughtful
look on his face. Then, just as he went
to open his mouth to speak, his eyes rolled back in his head and he was out
cold.
Draco whimpered in frustration. He had finally confessed his feelings to
Harry but hadn’t gotten any response.
Draco wondered if Harry would even remember anything in the
morning. With a deep sigh Draco curled
up on the other side of the bed and went to sleep.
