Epilogue
Severus found her exactly where he thought he would. He had received the message minutes after his wife would have been given word he wagered. She had been, in short, laid off. A year off, she had told him even weeks before she had been told, was too long. Six months, Hermione had told him, was pushing it. But Mother Nature had her plan and nothing short of nine months would suffice at least where the child was concerned.
She had given birth to their little love Rose three weeks before and was on maternity leave when she was asked to come to a meeting at the Ministry of Magic. It had been, from what he heard from Harry, as close to an ambush as one could get. Hermione had said nothing, let the wizard who wanted to take over the lab all but slander her and she was told she was no longer top dog.
“That bastard Grant Kindle is to blame for this,” Harry complained. “It was Kingsley’s fault as well. He promised that she would still have a job!” He pursed his lips, as he looked to his former professor. “You should have seen the smug look on Kindle’s face when Hermione walked out of the office.”
Severus was ready to break that little piss ant into several pieces before setting those same said parts on fire. He stopped just short of her, watching as she gently stroked the downy black hair atop Rose’s head.
“You heard,” she breathed, her whiskey colored eyes went to his onyx ones. “Harry told you I suppose?” He nodded. “Put her in the crib, please?”
He took the infant gently and put her into the basinet. Turning to his wife, Severus helped her to her feet. They walked over to their room, leaving the baby in Salt and Pepper’s care for the moment. Hermione went to her favorite chair and sat down hard.
“You can teach here at Hogwarts,” he told her even when she frowned. “If you don’t want to do that, we’ll figure something out.”
“Oh,” she breathed. “You’re talking about me being laid off.” Hermione nodded. “I should have known that little weasel would pull off a coup like this. It’s just like that misogynistic jackass Kindle.”
“You mean that wasn’t what you were upset about?” he asked her.
She shook her head no. “Kindle is going to find out that running the lab is more challenging than he thinks. And Kingsley is going to find it to be very expensive. But that’s neither here nor there—Jude Paulson ran out of appeals.”
Severus pulled her out of the chair, sat down and pulled her into his lap. “What’s going to happen to him now?”
Resting her head into the crook of his neck. “He’ll be spending the rest of his pathetic existence in a box of a room now that they no longer have the dementors there at the prison.” Sighing she muttered, “It almost seems worse.”
“He more than earned that punishment,” Severus told her quietly.
“I know,” she said, lifting her head to look up into his eyes. “So Harry told you about what happened at the meeting, did he?”
He nodded. “Said that man Kindle and Kingsley ambushed you. Mr. Potter also told me about how you didn’t say a word in your defense.”
“There wasn’t a defense to be had,” she explained to him. “I was off for ten months medical leave so far and they do need a leader at the labs. It’s true. But it’s also true that Kindle isn’t qualified to lead so much as a baby parade let alone a lab and the others are going to let Kingsley know it. Plus it’s going to be terribly difficult to do any of the testing without permission from me.”
“Why is that?” Severus asked as he saw a small cunning smile grace her face.
“I own the patents on all the tests the lab uses and they will have to pay me for the use of them.” She kissed his mouth lightly. “Until they have a written agreement with me leasing those rights, none of the tests can be used—Something that Kindle is more than likely finding out right now with the wards locking everyone out of the labs the moment the announcement was made as to my being laid off.”
“My sneaky little Slytherin,” her husband growled as he held her tightly. “We had better lock up the floos.” He absently did so, as his wife got a thoughtful look on her face.
“Better yet, let’s take Rose to see her Uncle Lucius and Luna. I’m sure that they’ll let us borrow the guesthouse for a week or so. I do believe that Lucius would get a kick out of verbally degrading Kindle if he tried to find us there.”
Laughing he carried his wife over to the bed to cuddle. The world would have to wait—for now.
