Severus shivered on the floor as the latest convulsions ran their course. Fuck. His muscles seized and ached. His entire body felt like it was on fire. His mouth was dry and parched. His brain was pounding in his skull.
“I’ll ask again, Severus. Where is Draco?” Came the hissing voice.
Severus rolled to his side. He coughed, his dry throat feeling as though knives were slicing through it, and blood droplets spattered on the floor. He gritted his teeth. “I do not know.”
A barking scoff. “He lies.” Greyback’s nose had given him away. Severus had been afraid of that.
A wand pressed under his chin lifting his head. Voldemort had kneeled down to look him in the eye. Severus cursed mentally. There was no way his shields would hold should the madman decide to go digging.
“It seems you have forgotten where your loyalties are, Severus.”
Severus dared to huff a laugh. Regardless, he was not leaving alive. “I haven’t.”
Voldemort snarled. “Dumbledore’s man huh?”
In for a knut, in for a galleon. “Not quite.”
The force of which his mind was invaded had him crying out and his walls crumbling to dust. There was nothing he could do against the onslaught. His body was too damaged and weak. His head felt as though it was being sliced in two.
Severus collapsed breathing hard as his mind was released. Voldemort raged. Severus had a brief moment to prepare himself before Cruciatus hit him harder than it ever had before. Dimly, he felt the bangle heating up against his wrist to the point he was afraid it would snap. Please, no more. He couldn’t. He tried to scream but there was no breath left in his lungs to do so. He couldn’t even catch breath to breathe. His heart was going to combust.
Severus collapsed into convulsions, his body was one big spasm, his lungs burned, and his heart was racing far too fast. His vision was spotty and he could hear nothing but one continuous ring. He felt the trickle of blood from his nose and ears. Fuck.
He was lifted. Pain lanced against his skull. His vision, what was left of it, spun. His stomach clenched. He vomited. That was not good. More spots danced across his vision as the insane pounding continued in his head. He could no longer feel his legs. He was gasping for what little air he could get.
He grunted as his body was dropped and made contact with the hard ground. Severus blinked trying to clear his vision but it was no use. All he could see was spots and blurs. It was enough to register shapes contorting. The ringing never stopped. He remembered it was the full moon. Severus closed his eyes.
Harry. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.

Normally, Harry woke peacefully. He’d stretch the days sleep away and burrow deeper into the covers, or roll onto his back to warm his belly against the fire. He was slow to enter the world of wakefulness.
Tonight, Harry bolted straight up from his sleep, wide awake. His breaths came fast and his heart raced in his chest. Something was wrong. Terribly, terribly wrong. Severus. Where was he? He turned to shake Edge awake urgently.
“Edge. Wake up. Somethings wrong with Severus. Please, Edge.”
Edge startled awake taking a minute to register Harry’s words. Once they sunk in he was out of bed immediately. Neither of them had changed clothes the night before which turned into a small blessing now. They raced to Severus quarters barreling into Draco who was rushing out the door. They landed in a heap of limbs but Harry recovered first flitting through the rooms desperately.
Edge grabbed onto Draco. “Where is he?” Draco shook with his eyes wide. Edge would feel regret for scaring the young man later. He gave the blonde a little shake. “Draco!”
“He’s gone.”
“Gone where?”
Draco swallowed thickly obviously trying to gain some control over himself. “He was called.”
Edge growled. “When?”
“About…about an hour and a half ago.”
Edge cursed letting Draco go and standing. He grabbed Harry before he could get ahold of Draco.
“Why did you not stop him?” Harry yelled fighting against Edge’s hold on him.
“I tried!” Draco yelled back. He hung his head obviously now trying to fight off tears of worry, panic, and frustration. “I tried.”
Edge held Harry in front of him forcing golden eyes to focus on him. “Harry, I’m going to get him. Deep breaths.”
Two more bodies charged through the door just then.
“What the hell is happening?” Sirius demanded.
“I felt Harry’s panic. Edge….”
Edge turned to Remus and Sirius not yet letting go of Harry. “Severus was called earlier. He’s already left. I need to get to him.”
The urgency in the vampires voice had Remus immediately jumping forward to get Harry, whom was now crying and frantic.
“He’s hurt. Oh Merlin, Edge, he’s hurt bad.”
Remus looked at Edge. “It’s a full moon.”
“Fuck.” Edge cursed and growled. “Sirius, you’re coming with me.”
Sirius shifted into Cobalt while turning to follow of Edge’s heels.
Remus warded the door before shifting in Harry’s arms giving the vampire something to cling onto in his panic. Draco was no better off. Moony herded the two next to the fireplace making sure to stay in physical contact with both.
Harry couldn’t be still. His hands constantly ran through his hair tugging at the strands. He paced and cried. Moony tried to comfort him when he came close but he shook the wolf off. Draco tried to talk to him but he growled at the blonde who sat down on the sofa, stiff and hurt. He tried opening the door to no avail. He banged his fists against the door.
“Let me out. Let me out!”
*Harry…*
“I have to get to him.” He pleaded with Moony. “Please, I have to get to Severus.”
Moony stepped toward Harry his head lowered in sadness for his cubs pain. *Edge will get him, Harry.*
Harry shook his head and turned back to fighting with the door. He could feel Severus fading.
Please, Severus. Help is coming. Hang on. Harry begged through their connection.
Harry. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.
It was so weak, so pained, barely a whisper.
Sharp pain raced through Harry taking his breath away. He clutched at his chest stepping back from the door, his eyes wide as pink continuous tears tracked down his cheeks.
Moony and Draco moved toward Harry nervously.
“Harry?” Draco whispered his own heart pounding in his chest with refreshed fear and sudden dread filled his stomach.
Harry couldn’t breathe. He felt faint. He swayed on his feet as the pain faded into nothing. He felt nothing. Nothing.
Harry collapsed to his knees bending over as though in pain. Nothing. Silence.
Harry screamed.

Edge knew he was racing against time; knew from Harry’s actions that there wasn’t time to spare. Every second was being counted. Cobalt raced with him right on his heels. They were almost there. Almost.
Cobalt suddenly skidded to a stop and bolted off in another direction. Edge had a brief moment of confusion before he followed the wolf quickly. Cobalt had the better nose. What had he caught? It wasn’t long before Edge caught it too. Werewolves. That wasn’t what made his stomach turn in grief. Blood. Lots of it. All Severus. Oh Merlin, no.
Edge came upon Cobalt who was frozen to the spot. Dreading what he was going to see he stepped up beside the wolf his hand covering his mouth and nose. Edge felt like he was going to be sick.
Blood coated the forest floor. It covered leaves completely. Trees were splattered thickly with it. Torn cloths of various shapes were strewn haphazardly around the area. This wasn’t just one wolf. This was a fucking pack. Neither limb nor hair of Severus could be seen.
A twig snapped in front of them and out stepped one of the wolves that undoubtedly was part of the carnage. It was matted with blood. Severus’s blood.
The snarl that released itself from Cobalt’s chest was menacing. Edge did not stop the dark wolf from charging at the malformed werewolf. He did not stop the dark wolf from gripping the things throat in his jaws. He did not stop him from shaking it like a ragdoll before crushing its throat with a sickening crunch. Edge watched silently, completely numb to the sight of Cobalt turning it into kibble, he spared no thought for the fact that it was a human who lost their mind to the moon.
“Cobalt.” Edge called after a few minutes. Even his voice sounded emotionless.
Cobalt growled but stopped turning to look at Edge. His blue eyes glowed in the light of the moon. His fur was darker where blood had splattered over him.
“Search.” It was a simple command but one that Cobalt obeyed.
While Cobalt ran off into the trees to search for what was left, Edge stared unseeing at the ground saturated with blood. Any hope he held for finding Severus alive had vanished. There was no way the man had survived this much blood loss. It coated the air so thickly that Edge was thankful he did not have to breathe. His only hope now was to find Severus’ body and hope it was still in one piece.
Edge looked up, frowning as Cobalt returned empty handed.
The wolf shook his head. *There is nothing.*
Edge growled under his breath. “Search again.”
Cobalt looked at Edge depression clear in his eyes. *Edge…*
“Search again.” Edge snapped. There had to be something. Anything.
Cobalt did as instructed with his head held low. It was obvious the wolf would not find anything. His nose was too good. Edge had tested it time and time again. Cobalt could find anything Edge hid from him no matter how hard he tried to cover it. If Cobalt could not find anything, there was nothing to find. And yet…
Cobalt returned once again with nothing.
Edge felt the world tip on its axis. His hands clenched into fists at his sides. “You are sure?”
Cobalt nodded.
“No trails? No drag marks? No prints?”
*Just the werewolves as they left, four of them not including that one.* Cobalt pointed his nose at what remained of the one that had circled back foolishly. *They look like they had ran off but there was nothing else.*
“Ran off?” The hell was that about? Werewolves did not just leave their victims and certainly not their kills. “They dragged nothing?”
Cobalt shook his head. *Nothing.*
Edge took a few breaths blinking back tears of grief and frustration. “There are no other scents? Are you sure?” He was desperately grasping at anything right now.
Cobalt walked up and nuzzled into Edge’s chest. *I’m sure. I checked in a full circle, a mile all around.* Cobalt was trying hard not to fall apart himself if the tightness in his voice was anything to go by.
Edge stepped away from his Guardian. Cobalt looked at him the wolfs eyes thick with tears. Edge roared, turning to slam a fist into a nearby tree. The tree cracked loudly, the sound echoing through the forest, the thick trunk giving way to Edge’s strength. It fell with a resounding clatter of branches and other smaller trees breaking in its wake. Edge stood shaking with his head hung. His knees gave way and he crumbled to the ground, his hands covering his face as his body shook with sobs.
He had failed. The one thing he had promised to do and he had failed. And not only had he not been there to save Severus, there was nothing to take back. Nothing. Severus was just gone. He growled and punched at the ground, over and over. Why could he not do this one thing? Why?!
Cobalt startled slightly when Edge had punched the tree. He allowed the vampire his moment of grief and only stepped forward when he just wouldn’t stop demolishing the ground. A hole was forming and his knuckles were starting to bleed from the force behind the attack. Cobalt nudged Edge with his head forcing Edge to grab onto him or be forced to fall over. Edge gripped his fur tightly in his hands holding onto Cobalt as though his very life depended on it. Cobalt stayed with Edge, allowing his own tears to trail down his furred cheeks.
Eventually, Cobalt was forced to lift Edge onto his back. They couldn’t stay here. They needed to get back to Harry. There was nothing left for them here.
Edge lay limp along Cobalt’s back allowing the wolf to carry him swiftly back towards the castle. He would be strong for Harry when they got there. Right now, he needed time to grieve himself. Needed time to feel the loss of a friend; however begrudgingly their relationship had started out. Needed time to deal with his failure before facing the one he had failed.

Draco met them in the entrance hall. He did not need to ask questions. Watching Edge slide off Cobalt like his body weighed a ton was answer enough to the only question he had. It was clear his godfather was not with them.
Edge felt his chest constrict anew when he noticed the blonde Slytherin. The look of that small slither of hope falling into pain and anguish about killed him all over again. How much worse would it be to see Harry? Edge braced himself as Draco stormed up to him, gripped his shirt, and shook him with clear desperation in his eyes.
“Where is he? Where is my godfather?”
Edge swallowed against the tears burning his eyes and throat. “I…there was…I’m so sorry, little dragon.”
“Don’t call me that!” Draco yelled. Edge flinched but took the hits from Draco’s fist against his chest. “Don’t…you were supposed to bring him back.”
Edge blinked helpless. His mind was blank. He could not think of one thing to say or do. His hands shook with wanting to wrap Draco in his arms, but he was unsure the blonde would be receptive. How did it come to be like this?
Cobalt stepped forward to nuzzle against the Slytherin. Draco ignored the wolf but burrowed deeper into Edge’s chest. Edge gave in to the desire to hold Draco. He held the younger man close turning his nose into his hair and breathing deep. Draco moved his arms to wrap around him tightly, his nails dug into his shirt scratching lightly across his skin. Edge held Draco so long he was afraid he would never let go. Draco’s scent soothed his nerves despite being so filled with sadness and pain. Draco’s sobs slowly died away but he did not let go of Edge.
Cobalt stayed close watching over the two while they found solace in each other. His heart was heavy and went out to both of them. He worried about Harry. Cobalt’s personal relationship with Snape had never been great but Harry clearly adored the man. It became clear very quickly, once he learned his way around his nose that Snape cared about Harry deeply as well. Cobalt hung his head with eyes closed. Things had gone so wrong so quickly. None of them had expected a thing; except for Snape. Cobalt shook his head. They needed to get to Harry.
*Edge.*
Edge opened blue eyes to look at Cobalt. They looked so empty. The vampire nodded. “Come, Draco. I need to see to Harry.”
Edge did not move; however, until Draco nodded. The blonde stepped back and wiped his tears away quickly but more leaked out to take the place of those wiped away. Edge was loath to let the little dragon go but allowed Draco to step out of his reach.
“We moved to your rooms. Harry must have felt…” Draco took a deep breath. Edge felt his stomach sink. “We had his friends come down and we informed Dumbledore. Everyone is waiting for news.”
“How is Harry?” Edge asked softly dreading the answer. They started the trek to the dungeons.
Draco shook his head. “He won’t respond to any of us.”
Cobalt whined. Edge clenched his eyes shut for a moment. Harry had undoubtedly felt the bonds break when Severus…damn it. Edge felt a wave of self-loathing wash over him. He had promised. He had promised to bring Severus back and he couldn’t even do that. He felt a hand wrap around his own. Edge looked to find Draco still looking ahead as they walked. The hand tightened around his own briefly.
“It’s not your fault.” Draco whispered. He did not let go.
Edge looked away. He closed his hand around Draco’s thankfully.
They made it to his rooms much faster than Edge was prepared for. He looked at the door with the desire to turn and walk away rushing over him. He wanted to hide from the pain he knew was on the other side. He did not want to face it. Draco squeezed his hand. Cobalt pressed against his side with a whine. Edge closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He had to do this. Harry deserved to know. He would not run from his Childe like Dante had done to him.
With the air of a man headed to the gallows, Edge opened the door and stepped into his rooms.
All eyes turned to him with the exception of Harry’s. Harry was sitting on the floor staring at his hands unseeing. Moony curled around him. Ron and Hermione sat close on the sofa. Hermione had tears silently streaming down her face. Ron had an arm around her offering comfort. Dumbledore stood off to the side. All faces were grim. Dumbledore stepped up to Edge. Cobalt moved around them all and moved quickly to Moony. The wolves nuzzled each other. Cobalt nuzzled Harry with no response.
“Bad news, it seems” Dumbledore stated gravely.
Edge nodded. He couldn’t bring himself to speak. He only had eyes for his Childe who had yet to even acknowledge that anyone new was in the room. Draco nudged him. Edge blinked a couple times before turning to the Headmaster.
“He was…unrecoverable.” His voice broke a bit. He cleared his throat.
“Unrecoverable? What does that mean?” Ron spoke up. Hermione turned to smack at him with a pointed look to Harry who did not move.
Edge didn’t know if Harry being motionless was preferable or if he would have preferred him yelling and screaming. He shook himself.
“A pack of werewolves got him. Most likely Greybacks pack.”
Edge was unprepared for the sudden onslaught that was Harry. His Childe was a blur of limbs, nails, and fang. He barreled into Edge hard enough they fell back into the hallway through the door. Edge’s hand was ripped from Draco’s hard enough he feared that the blondes arm was dislocated when Draco cried out. Wood splintered around them.
Harry cried, yelled, and hit Edge multiple times before Edge could get his bearings enough to try to stop Harry from hurting himself. Edge could care less about the damage Harry was inflicting upon him. He deserved everything Harry gave him. He had promised to protect Severus; had promised to bring Severus home. He had failed his Childe. He had failed Harry.
Harry was lifted from him as suddenly as he had been crashed into. Moony and Cobalt had got their teeth into the sleeves of Harry’s shirt and was pulling him back. Harry fought them every inch.
“You promised!” Harry yelled through tears and fangs, his eyes bright gold. “You promised to keep him safe! You said you would bring him back to me!”
Edge sat stunned, unable to move or speak. His couldn’t breathe through the pain in his chest. Blood ran down his cheeks from the scratches Harry had created. He could feel phantom pains in the places Harry had hit him. There would be bruises. None of this compared to the pain caused by the anguish on his Childe’s face, the deep pain his Childe was facing. Not only had the Pair bond been destroyed, he had lost his chosen; his claimed; his mate. Edge could do nothing to fix that.
There was the sound of cloth seams ripping before Harry was on him again. This time Harry clung to him. Nails dug sharply into his back. Edge immediately wrapped his arms around Harry in return.
“You promised.” Harry said weakly.
“I know. I’m sorry.” Edge choked out.
“He’s gone. Severus…”
Edge choked on his tears clutching Harry tighter to him. “I know. I know.”
No one dared say a word. There was nothing any of them could say.
