Living Chapter 31
"When was the last time you talked to Ron?" Ginny sat bouncing her foot up and down. Harry watched as she nibbled at her lips, which of course made him not even hear what she'd asked. Those were the same lips he'd love to take somewhere else and give them some undivided attention. Her tongue flicked out to wet her lips, which made him instinctively do the same to his own.
"Harry, did you hear what I said?" Sometimes not listening to what she said bothered Ginny and tonight was one of those times. Her shrill question shouted at him brought him out of his stupor.
"I'm sorry, what did you say?" Ginny glared at him smacking him in the arm. For a girl, she was very strong and playing Quidditch had truly helped her develop muscles that most girls didn't even know were there. Having so many brothers to defend herself from had also contributed to her knowing how to fight back when needed.
"Where is your mind Potter?" Her fingers started tapping him on the forehead with a steady rhythm.
Harry started laughing at his girlfriend calling him by his last name. Grabbing her hands her held her arms to her sides, "Well, Weasley, you're distracting me with those luscious lips of yours begging to be kissed."
"Then we need to solve this problem so I can have your undivided attention." Ginny pulled Harry to her, sliding onto his lap. Her arms circled around Harry's neck as she kissed him, not letting him up for air. "Better? Now, will you listen to me?"
Harry grinned in his well-kissed stupor, "I think I'll need more of that kissing therapy to really help my problem today."
"Oh, no way. Right now we need to talk about Ron. I'm worried about him, especially since he hasn't come back after dinner." Her hands pushed against him as she leaned back away from him.
"Maybe he's with Hermione?" Harry said which promptly made Ginny start laughing.
"You and I both know that if she's with anyone it wouldn't be my loud-mouthed brother. She's with a man that's more the snarky, silent and brooding type." Ginny got up to imitate Snape as he stalked along the hallways of Hogwarts. Her movements were quite accurate, even with her not wearing the infamous black cape that Professor Snape seemed to live in. Her intimidating glare and smirk finally made Harry break as he almost fell off the sofa.
Harry laughed, "Then we get the map out and find Hermione and Ron. I want to make sure he really doesn't hate me." Harry got up to wander the room as he spoke. "I didn't think Ron had it in him to be such a great actor. After what happened today I want to make sure that he really doesn't hate me and that he was acting."
Ginny came back to his side, "He doesn't hate you. Since when are you so insecure, Mr. Savior of the Wizarding World? This was your plan and he was working it as he said he would. We just have to trust that he's following through and you need to not get your knickers in a twist about it."
"Hey! I don't wear knickers." Harry burst out, "But, I know someone that does and I'd like a look at those knickers. Are you wearing the red lacy ones today?" His enthusiastic hands reached out to open the button on her trousers but were stopped cold by his target.
Ginny put her hands on his chest stopping him from his intentions, "Slow down lover boy. We look at the Marauder's Map first so we can locate Hermione and Ron, then later I'll let you take a peek at my knickers and maybe, just maybe, I have the red lacy ones on."
"Just a peek?" Harry whined making a sour face as if he was in pain. "You are killing me, woman." He grabbed his chest and grunted, "Ugh.
"Well, let's see how much we find out tonight and then I'll reconsider," she toyed with a lock of her hair as she licked her lips and then blew him an air kiss.
Harry tugged her close to him, "Ok, that's a promise, right? This teasing is hard on a body."
Standing on her tiptoes she reached up to pull his head down where their lips met again in a fierce, longish kiss. "Promise."
Ron hated every minute in the Death Eaters recruiting meeting. It would almost be better being dragged to the library by Hermione to study on a Saturday night. There had been twelve students invited to come and meet the new leader. They hadn't been forced into anything but told what they'd have to do in order to join. If they failed the series of tests needed to become a Death Eater, they would be Obliviated. Ron had tried to remember all of the people who'd been in the room. He hadn't been given a chance to talk to anyone else with Justin on one side and Theo on the other. His bodyguards hadn't left his side the entire time. They were sticking to him almost as much as Lavender had in sixth year when he'd lost his mind and thought being with her was a good thing. What jerks these two were. Their shifty eyes kept staring at him every time he moved a muscle. It's not like he was going to run and hide, even though he felt like doing exactly that.
Finally, the meeting had started when the new bad guy had walked in. He'd also instantly recognized the new Dark Lord, Antonin Dolohov. He looked a little different from how he'd remembered him from a few years ago, as he looked older, grayer and if even possible, more fierce. Curling his lips as he surveyed the new recruits didn't help his demeanor. There were none of the facial characteristics that had defined Lord Voldemort's snake-like figure, so hopefully, that meant this leader hadn't dabbled in Horcruxes. Ron though had felt so uncomfortable when Dolohov wouldn't stop staring at him. Yes, his red hair and his height made him stand out, but why was he being looked at so closely. He hadn't done anything. When their eyes first met, the flash of recognition had shown on Dolohov's face as he sneered down at him. Ron had squirmed a little being gazed at so blatantly, but he stood his ground and glowered right back. He showed no fear and gave the impression that he belonged there among the others. Ron gritted his teeth and glared at anyone and everyone in the room. He tried to show a new, fierce persona. Theo at his side stood with his arms folded in front of him with a smug look on his face.
"Weasley, you're the best recruit here tonight. Don't foul things up for us or you're a dead man." Ron tried not to flinch at his words and continued looking around at his "competition".
Dolohov gave a long speech to the group about his reigning as the Dark Lord and evil things, loyalty to the cause, whatever the cause was, and how they mustn't mess up their chance at greatness and glory, and then Dolohov turned swiftly and left the room. Now each recruit was left with their sponsors wondering what they'd heard exactly and what it all meant. It was great that now he, a Weasley, was becoming a sycophant to one of the evilest wizards he knew of. Gods! What was his life going to be like if he followed through with this? He wasn't sure he wanted to flatter Death Eaters to gain any advantage here.
"You have two days to finish your task. If you don't finish it within the time limit, you will be severely punished." Justin spoke slowly as if Ron were a dimwit. "So what will it be? Will you accept the task or are you ready to be Obliviated?"
Ron knew that he had to get the information back to Snape about the meeting and who had attended. If he chickened out and chose to be Obliviated they'd be back to square one. On the other hand, he had no idea about the task and what he'd have to do. What if they wanted him to murder someone? He knew whom he'd like to murder and he'd been in that room earlier.
"I accept the task and will not let you down. I'm ready to make something of myself and get the recognition that I deserve." Ron felt like he'd said what he needed to say, even though he'd laid it on kind of thick but both Junior Death Eaters were grinning from ear to ear.
"I told you so Theo. I told you that Weasley was brave and would join us. He's a Gryffindor after all." Justin shouted out his words and all heads turned and stared at Ron. Everyone knew who he was and who his best friend was, or used to be before their very public fight. If he were going to play the part he'd have to do it all the way.
Theo leaned in speaking softly, "So, every recruit has a different task assigned to them. Here is yours…"
Ron walking back to his dorm room fretted about what Theo had said. His stomach did some flip-flops and his head was hurting. This wasn't what he'd thought the task would be. This was almost harder than anything he'd had to do during the war. Why did he volunteer for this again? Merlin, what was he thinking? He stumbled up the last steps that led to Gryffindor Tower. Ron knew that whether he successfully completed his task or didn't finish the task, either way, he was screwed. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to do.
"What did that carpet ever do to you?"
"What?" Hermione stopped her pacing to look up at Severus who was sprawled out on the leather couch in relaxation. "What did you say about the carpet?"
Severus gave her a smirk and then sighed. "I commented on how you are abusing the carpet in my room and I'd appreciate it if you'd sit your lovely arse down next to me." He patted the couch next to him as he picked up his wine glass taking a slow sip and tilted his head back to savor the taste.
"Tosh. That's not what you said," Hermione shook her head swinging her curls in his face and plopped down next to him. "Also, your carpet is fine. It was already worn out before I ever first set foot in your rooms."
"You do know your pacing won't bring Mr. Weasley back to Gryffindor Tower any faster." His hand came out to pull her closer to him. "I do have some ideas of how we could pass the time." His eyebrows shot up as he leaned in to press his lips against her neck. "You are wound up tighter than my grandmum's old antique clock. You having a heart attack won't make time move any faster." His lips found hers, as his arms held her tight against him molding her to his figure. He did his best to leave her breathless.
"You always seem to know how to handle any situation. You amaze me; so strong, so confident and so incredibly sexy."
"That's because I'm Severus Snape." He smiled at her, as his words seemed to drip off his lips, while she laughed with delight at his bravado. Most people never got to see the humorous side of this man and when you truly knew him, it was a pleasant surprise. How wonderful was it that Severus could be at a place like this in his life. She knew that he hadn't been given many reasons the past several years to smile about anything. Never in her wildest dreams did she ever think that she'd be the one to make her stern potions professor smile and have a reason to laugh.
"Why do I always spend my time with men with egos the size of Europe? I swear I can't get away from you lot." Severus tried to act offended which was entirely impossible while Hermione was sitting on his lap and giggling.
"Just think of it as moving up and gaining better taste in your selection. The Gods know you only had one place to go after dating that dunderhead Ronald Weasley." Hermione tried to protest, but the words didn't come. "See, even deep inside you know I speak the truth."
In one fell swoop, he shifted them both where he trapped her underneath him. "I'm not disagreeing…this time."
"Well, this must be my lucky day then if you're not arguing back." He then proceeded to kiss her so soundly she found she had no reason to protest. This man didn't just kiss her; he knew how to claim her as his and showed her as often as possible.
Ron's heart was still racing as he finally made it into the common room. Bounding up the stairs to his dorm room he ran and threw himself onto his bed pulling the covers up over his head. He hadn't looked around to see if anyone else was even in the room. He didn't care. He didn't want to talk to anyone and wasn't ready yet to share what he'd been tasked with. Soon enough, they'd all know and would have to decide how far he'd be allowed to go in order to keep spying on Theo and Justin. It was only his life at stake, he choked on that thought and willed himself to sleep before he started crying.
I know you want to know all about the task, right? It will all be revealed in the next chapter. This story has been battling me and I apologize greatly for the delay, but I hope it was worth the wait. We will eventually see a new Ron Weasley, as he is just a bit stressed at the moment. Please leave me your thoughts as to what you think the "task" is that has been assigned to Ron. It may be something easy to guess and may be something entirely off your radar. But I promise it'll be revealed in chapter 32.
