It had taken them several hours of medical diagnostics, arguing, and threatening to hex the poor flustered mediwitch before they were allowed to share a bed. Madam Pomfrey was still grumbling about it but they’d stood their ground. They weren’t going to separate for anyone, not even Snape, who had assured them that no one had learned of their escape yet.
“Now what?” Draco asked quietly in the peaceful darkness of the hospital wing. He was exceedingly happy that they could still see each other in the moonlight. It was a huge trade up from the inky black that had surrounded them for the past week.
“We just live,” Hermione sighed and snuggled into his arms.
“It feels… wrong though.”
Hermione bit her lip in thought. “It does.”
After everything they had been through, it seemed almost a shame that they should go back to their normal lives. Others before them had suffered so horribly and they had managed to escape those trials and tribulations, not that there weren’t any headed their way. They still had to deal with the fallout of their new relationship. They had decided to give it a try but to keep it quiet at first. There were still explanations to hand out, questions to dodge, and homework to catch up on. Well, after they were well.
Poppy had gone nearly apoplectic when she learned what they’d been through. She dumped dozens of potions down their throats before practically cramming nasty mush into their mouths. They didn’t mind it though. A week without food was enough to make them overlook how disgusting the gruel was. With full stomachs, sated thirsts, and warm clothes, they could barely fight off sleep. But they felt strange, like they were letting the castle down somehow.
“That wasn’t some coincidence,” Draco said finally. “Especially after that one scene.”
He didn’t have to elaborate. She knew he meant the scene where Trelawney had given a prophecy to Tom Riddle. If it was ever recorded, no one outside of the former Dark Lord knew of it. She pondered the words again. What did they mean?
Nobility of both worlds will mend the rift set forth by the founders. The lion and the dragon will join blood and break the bonds of hatred. The power the Dark Lord knows not will conquer the world.
“The rift is obviously the one Slytherin started,” Hermione said after a while. “The power is love. Voldemort never knew love, nor did he have any understanding of it. It’s what killed him in the end.”
Draco snorted. “So two noble people from two different worlds will fall in love and rule the world?”
“No, love will conquer the world, not them. Besides, you missed a part. It said they will join blood.”
“That’s not likely. Blood bonds aren’t practiced anymore because they can’t be broken, even by death.”
“Couldn’t they just have a child together? That would be the combination of their blood, would it not?”
Draco sighed. “That’s the thing about prophesies. You can’t be sure whether they are literal or figurative. I wonder who the lion and the snake are.”
“Maybe it’s the symbol of the houses. It does reference the founders after all.”
“So a Gryffindor and a Slytherin,” he said slowly, something nagging at him. Nobility from both worlds. “One from each world, so a muggle born and a pureblood. And they have to be noble.”
Hermione’s mind spun so fast that she felt dizzy. It couldn’t be. “Draco, are you a noble?”
Draco furrowed his brow. “Well, I suppose I’m a Lord.”
“I’m a Lady,” Hermione whispered.
“You think it’s us?”
Hermione nodded. “Why else would it show us that? Especially after what happened the last time someone viewed one of Trelawney’s prophesies.”
Draco blew out a breath. “That’s a huge charge.”
Hermione nodded again.
“It’s an interesting one to be sure,” Snape said, stepping around the curtain.
“Shit,” Draco groaned. “Who else heard?”
“No one,” Snape assured him. “Poppy asked me to keep guard in case Potter or Weasley tried to break in to see you. Seeing as how it was a worthy cause, I said yes. And now I realize that you two have had a much more interesting time in the room than simply starving and freezing…among other things.”
“Those other things will remain quiet,” Draco said in a hard tone.
Snape waved him off. “No matter. Tell me, what did you see in that room? I gather a prophesy of Trelawney’s, but I wonder how.”
They stayed silent, not willing to breech the room’s trust in them. They refused to look Snape in the eye, fearing what he would do if he knew the entire truth. They had no doubt he wasn’t out to be the next Dark Lord. But their stay was just a bit too raw.
“I will pry it from you if you do not tell me,” Snape hissed.
“You can try,” Draco said quietly. “But we aren’t about to anger the castle by breaking its trust.”
“Breaking its… you mean to say the castle is sentient?”
“Isn’t it?” Hermione asked. “Can’t you feel it?”
Severus stared at them for a while before nodded. “I have. It has helped me out more than once.”
“I’ll say,” Hermione snorted and then froze in fear.
“What. Did. It. Tell. You?” Snape seethed.
“Loads of things,” Draco said. “But we aren’t about to tell you. You’d rip our throats out.”
Snape took a calming breath and shifted. “I… I’d like to help you… if this prophecy is true, that is.”
“Your word?” Draco asked.
Snape held out his arm to take an oath.
“We have no wands to bond,” Hermione said quietly.
Snape reached in his cloak and produced two wands, tossing them over. They held them closely, feeling their magic strum in appreciation. They breathed a sigh of relief and nodded their readiness. Draco held out his hand to take an oath with Snape. Hermione bound them with a flourish and a smile of relief at finally having someone they could confide in.
“Now,” Snape said, summoning a chair and sitting down. “Tell me.”
“It showed us it’s memories,” Hermione started. “And a few nightmares.”
“It’s memories,” Snape said hoarsely. “All of them?”
“I’d imagine not,” Draco said. “We weren’t in there for centuries. But… it did show us some very important ones … like Trelawney’s first prophecy.”
“How did she make it?” Snape asked.
“Riddle handed her Cassandra’s crystal ball,” Hermione said quietly. “And she went rigid and-“
“Made the prophecy you were talking about,” Snape finished. “I believe you have figured it out.”
“But it sounds…impossible,” Draco said quietly.
“Most things worth having are,” Snape said distractedly. “What else did it show you?”
Hermione and Draco looked at each other for a long time. If they told him, he’d more than likely blow up. Still, they could try and help. Having his family ripped away from him was probably worse than anything they could imagine. The fear that he couldn’t find them was heart wrenching. They agreed silently to tell him but no one else.
“Out with it!” Snape snapped.
Hermione cleared her throat and grabbed Draco’s hand for support. “Professor… um, have you found your mate and daughter yet?”
