Blaise walked into Draco's room without knocking.
Draco spun around quickly when he heard his bedroom door open, and relaxed his shoulders when he realized it was only Blaise.
"Little tense there mate?" Blaise asked.
Draco grunted something under his breath in response.
"So what's up? What happened between you and the Head Girl?"
"Nothing" Draco stated angrily.
"If it was nothing, you wouldn't be as pissed off as you are right now. So tell me what's up. I'm going to find out eventually whether you tell me or not."
"I mean nothing" Draco snapped. "She's back to acting how she used to, ignoring my existence. So I told her to continue to do so."
"Why would you say something like that, when that's not something that you truly want?"
"And how do you know what I want?" Draco hissed.
"Because I know you better than anyone. I've known you since we were kids mate, and regardless of if you want to admit it or not, I can read you like an open book regardless of if you try and hide what you're truly feeling or not. I know the true reason the love potions spell broke, and I also know there was no other way around it. You're the best potion maker in the school, meaning that there were no problems and you made the potion correctly. Which means, that you are in love with Hermione Granger."
"I am not in love with anybody. You know as well as I do that Malfoy's don't love. My father never loved me or my mother, what makes you think I would be any different? I'm a splitting imagine of my father, hell I pretty much was him for the longest time with the way I acted" Draco stated angrily.
"You used to be like your father, you aren't anymore. You've changed Draco, and I honestly think it's for the better. You finally starting thinking for yourself and making your own decisions. The day you stood up to your father is literally the proudest I have ever been of you. You're not your father, nor will you ever be, and you know that. You're just using your family as an excuse and as a cover to pretend that you are just like them, when in reality you are nothing like them. You care about Hermione, who cares! It's your life, so do what you want with it."
"You know it's not that easy, especially with my family being who they are. If they ever found out how I feel, they would kill me, or worse, they would kill her. My father would never accept me being with someone of Hermione's blood status, you know that. Having feelings for her literally puts her life in danger. It's better if we just go back to the way we used to act, at least that at I know nothing will happen to her"
"You wouldn't let anything happen to her" Blaise stated confidently.
"I wouldn't be able to keep my eyes on her at all times Blaise. And my father would be on the hunt for both of us."
"So you're going to let your form of happiness just walk out of your life because you're afraid of your father?" Blaise asked skeptically. "You're just going to give up? I have never seen you care about someone like you do her. I've seen the way you look at her Drake, your feelings aren't just going to go away. If you let her walk out of your life it is going to be your biggest regret."
"Well what do you want me to do?" Draco exclaimed.
"I want you to do something for you for once, without worrying about your fathers input" Blaise stated simply.
"If only things were that easy" Draco said defeated.
"Things are as easy as you make them."
"Are you insinuating that you actually want me and Hermione together?" Draco asked surprised.
"Yeah, I do. Because I see how she changes you. You try and be a nicer and better person for her. And she makes you happy."
"I just don't know what to do. Things aren't the same between us now that she's not under the influence of the potion. When she was under the spell, it was easier. Now she isn't in love with me anymore and I don't know what to do about it. I don't know how to act."
"Act the same way you were while she was under the spell."
"I tried, and she was acting all weird about it."
"Can you blame her? She goes from hating you, to being absolutely head over heels in love with you, and then she's torn out of the spell and left with all if the memories and moments that you guys shared together. Obviously the girl is going to be confused and conflicted with her emotions. Just give her time to figure it all out. I'm sure she will end up coming around eventually."
"If you say so" Draco said dismissing the conversation.
xx
"How'd it go?" Ginny asked as Blaise made his way back into the common room, where she had waited for him.
"It went well. He admitted that he has feelings for her still. He doesn't actually want her to ignore him. Draco has a temper, and sometimes he lets it get the best of him."
"So he still loves Hermione?"
"Of course he does. But he is worried about his family finding out, which is one reason he's using as a means to try and convince himself that not talking to her is the best decision. Which obviously, I told him was wrong. I also told him that if he pushes her out of his life he's going to regret it."
"What did he say to that?"
"He didn't deny it, because he knows I'm right." Blaise's stated simply.
"So, are we still going to go through with this plan that you have?" Ginny asked.
"They're both stubborn, so giving them both the extra push they need will end up benefiting them both in the end."
"And this plan is guaranteed to work? How are you going to make them both be together?"
"They're not going to have a choice, Dumbledore is going to be the one to suggest it. And we both know that Hermione will do anything that Dumbledore tells her regardless of if she likes it or not."
"Alright, now I really want to know what you're planning."
"In time my sexy little accomplice" Blaise said winking.
xx
It had been a week since Ginny and Blaise had both talked to Hermione and Draco, and there had been no process. Both parties were too stubborn to talk to one another.
Ginny looked over at the Slytherin table while Hermione was adamantly conversing with Harry and Ron. She noticed that Draco was done with his meal, and was unconsciously picking at his food. Blaise was watching Draco inconspicuously, but turned towards the Gryffindor table feeling eyes on him.
The Christmas break was around the corner, and Ginny and Blaise both knew that they had to get Hermione and Draco talking before then.
Ginny had tried to figure out what Blaise was up to with his whole matchmaking plan, but she still ha absolutely no idea what it entailed besides knowing that Dumbledore was involved somehow.
Blaise had told her that he had talked to Dumbledore, and that his plan was set into action, and that it would be announced tonight after the dinner feast.
So obviously, Ginny had scarfed down her dinner in haste, anxious to find out what Dumbledore was going to announce.
A clinging of a cup snapped Ginny's eyes away from the Slytherin table and up to the teachers table, where Dumbledore was now standing waiting patiently for the attention of the entire Great Hall.
It was silent immediately and all the students turned and looked at Dumbledore, who smiled and cleared his throat.
"Christmas break is nearly upon us, meaning that we are half way through this year already. Oh how the time fly's Anyways, we decided to do something different this year to celebrate the holidays."
Murmurs erupted throughout the hall.
"We have decided that we are going to hold a winter ball the Friday before everybody leaves to go back home. The ball is not mandatory, and is being held for the 5th-7th year students. This event will start at 9pm. Another ball will be held for the younger years, starting at 6 and ending at 9. Although this ball is not mandatory, I would like to see as many of you present as possible, as this will be one of the last times you all have the opportunity to do something like this together."
Whispers of excitement burst out throughout the hall and Dumbledore smiled.
"You will all be given an opportunity to go to Hogsmeade and pick out whatever dress clothes that you may require. The theme is winter wonderland, so dress accordingly. Dress code is still in place, so please make sure that you are covered appropriately. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to come and find me and ask my anything you need. Could I please have Ms. Granger and Mr. Malfoy stay behind. The rest of you, head off to your beds for the night."
Ginny looked back over at the Slytherin table and locked eyes with Blaise, who sent her a wink.
Ginny looked away from Blaise the smirk still etched on her face when she turned to look at Hermione, who was sitting still.
"You okay Hermione?" Ron asked.
Hermione looked up. "Yeah I'm fine" she said with a smile.
"I wonder what Dumbledore wants to say to you?" Harry said.
"I'm assuming something about the ball" Hermione stated.
"True. You are the Head Girl so that makes sense" Ron said.
Ron and Harry stood up.
"You coming Gin?" Ron asked.
"Yeah I'll meet up with you in a second, just gotta talk to Hermione quick"
Ron nodded and him and Harry left.
"I'm sure whatever Dumbledore has to say isn't bad, so don't start worrying before you even know what he wants. You'll only have to be around Malfoy for like five to ten minutes tops."
Hermione looked up at Ginny and smiled and said "Thanks Gin."
"Let me know what he says though. You know me, curious and all. And you don't want me hunting you down to get answers."
"True."
Hermione noticed Draco making his way to Dumbledore, so Hermione stood up and said "Alright I should probably go and see what Dumbledore wants I will talk to you later"
Hermione walked up to where Draco and Dumbledore were waiting, and stood as far away from Draco as she could without being obvious about it.
"Thank you both for staying" Dumbledore started.
"Now, since you are Head Girl and Boy, I am counting on the two of you to go to the ball, and hopefully persuade the rest of the students to do the same. Because you are the Heads of the school, I would like the two of you to go to the ball together."
Hermione froze.
Draco's body stiffened and he cast a look out of the corner of his eye and saw that Hermione was just as stuff as he was.
"Now I know that you two aren't the best of friends" Dumbledore said with a twinkle in his eye, "But you are two of my best students here and I would like you to set an example. This is one of the last times we have the opportunity to promote house unity, and by having you two show up together it might encourage other students to see that it is not such a bad thing. With the Dark Lord gone, I see no reason for the houses to still have rivalries between them like they do. Like I said, I know this isn't necessarily ideal for either of you, but it's something that I would greatly appreciate. Do either of you feel this is a problem?"
Hermione wanted to yell and tell him just how much of a problem this was for her, but she didn't want to disappoint Dumbledore.
"No professor, I do not see a problem" Draco stated before Hermione could say anything.
"Ms. Granger?" Dumbledore inquired.
"No problem for me either" Hermione said as calmly as possible.
"Good!" Dumbledore said clapping his hands together. "Now that we have that settled, the two of you can head back to your dorm, and I will keep you up to date with the plans regarding the ball."
Hermione and Draco left the Great Hall together. When the Great Hall doors closed behind them, Hermione turned to Draco and said "Why would you tell Professor Dumbledore that there is no problem with us going to the ball together?"
"You were going to agree on what he said anyways so I don't see why you are trying to start an argument with me" Draco stated.
"How do you know what I was going to say?" Hermione asked crossing her arms across her chest.
Draco turned and looked at her. "Because I know how you are. You wouldn't want to do anything to disappoint the man, even if that meant doing something you didn't want to do. Don't worry, I am already aware that if you had the choice, going to the ball with me was not the option you would have chosen. No need to tell me and throw it in my face. It's already obvious enough."
Hermione stared at Draco dumbfounded. She could have sworn that she saw hurt and anger flash in his eyes.
"Are you okay?" Hermione asked softly after a moment.
"Why are you even asking, it's not like you care." Draco said, trying to keep the emotion out of his voice.
Hermione narrowed her eyes and studied him.
Draco looked back over at her and saw her scrutinizing him.
"What?" Draco snapped.
Hermione's eyes widened and she took a step back.
Draco tensed as he saw fear in Hermione's eyes. He didn't mean to snap on her, he just had an extremely hard time controlling his emotions around her. And he couldn't stand the way she was acting. All he wanted to do was grab her, and kiss her with everything that he had. Show her just what she meant to him, but he knew that doing that would just push her farther away.
Draco let out a deep breath and ran his hand through his hair, messing up his its usual perfection.
Hermione had to admit that his hair looked a lot better all messed up then when it was all perfectly in place.
"I'm sorry for snapping at you. I just have a lot going on right now."
Concern sprung into Hermione's eyes and Draco felt his heart leap in his chest. She walked forward a few steps.
"What's wrong?"
Draco tried to think of something to say, anything but what was really on his mind, but he heard himself telling her the truth, and he had no control over his mouth.
"Honestly Hermione, It's hard for me to be so close to you everyday but yet so far away. Spending all that time with you allowed me to get the chance to actually know you and I came to admire the woman that I saw standing in front of me. Who knew that the one girl I was brought up to hate, was my equal in every way. I look at you, and it's like everything else disappears, nothing else matters. I've never felt anything like this for anyone else, and even I don't understand it at times. This feeling I have is new to me, and hell it surprised me more than anyone."
Draco stepped forward and grabbed her hands, which were now shaking in his.
"I know this is probably all overwhelming for you, but I can't pretend anymore. Not talking to you and just watching you ignore me every day affects me more than you would think. I thought that maybe by telling myself that I didn't want to talk to you, and that it was better with us not talking, that I would eventually convince myself that these things were true. But, they're not. And honestly, the reason I told Dumbledore that there was no problem with us going to the ball together, is because I want to go to the ball with you. I can't picture myself going with anyone else. Hell, I don't want to go with anyone else because my mind and eyes would just be on you the entire night."
Hermione felt tears spring into her eyes, and a lonely tear spilled down her cheek.
Draco reached up and gently brushed it away.
"Hermione, what's wrong?" He asked softly.
"I don't know what to do. I'm so confused. While under the love potion, I saw a side of you that I never would have believed existed if I hadn't of see it with my own eyes. I remember how happy I was with you, and all of the feelings I experienced. I just don't know if any of it was real, or if it was just the effects of being under the spell of the potion. I went from one minute being in love with you, to the next minute it just stopping and leaving me with so many questions and jumbled thoughts. I know the reason for why the spell of the potion broke, and I honestly don't even know what to think. I never would have believed it possible. But I know how exceptional you are at potions, so I know that you made the potion correctly, meaning that there was only one way that the spell could have been broken."
Draco swallowed and hoarsely asked "And what was the only way the spells magic could be broken?"
Hermione bit her lip nervously.
"For you to be in love with me" she whispered.
"And is that such a bad thing?" Draco asked whispering softly.
"I don't know." Hermione said gently.
"Although it isn't every day you just snap back to reality and find out that your so called worst enemy is in love with you" Hermione said laughing nervously.
"I understand that this situation is hard to comprehend. But give me a chance to prove to you that I can be the guy that I was while you were under the influence of the love potion. That's all I'm asking for, is a chance. Afterwards, if you don't want to talk to me ever again then I will respect your decision and leave you alone."
Hermione saw the pain flash through his eyes as his last statement. She stood there and contemplated what he was offering. She looked into his eyes that were now on her.
She did like the side of him that she had experienced while under the influence of the potion, that much she had to admit. And, she still felt butterflies if she thought back to the passionate kisses that they had shared. But could she really put 6 years of hatred and torment behind her? After all of the things that he had put her through over the years, how could she just forget about that and allow herself to even think about having feelings for someone as cruel as he had been? Not only that, but Harry and Ron would never speak to her again. But, he had shown a side of himself to her that she was pretty sure next to no one ever got to see, and that side of him intrigued her. Hermione liked puzzles, and Draco Malfoy was a huge one. Not only that, but she knew that what he was saying to her was true. There was no way he could have found another way for the potion to break, and he had seemed just as surprised as she was the minute it had worn off.
Draco could see her thoughts swirling behind her eyes and he crossed his fingers behind his back.
When her eyes finally focused again Draco took a deep breath and waited to hear her answer.
"Okay fine Malfoy, I'll give you a chance."
Draco wanted to jump up and down and do a happy dance, but, Malfoy's do not dance around like an idiot in front of the girl that they are trying to impress. And, he didn't want to take her answer back.
"Thank you Hermione" Draco said as a small smile made it's way onto his face.
"But, you promise that if I tell you I'm done and that I want you to leave me alone that you will?" Hermione probed.
Draco was too busy celebrating inside his head to answer.
"Malfoy?" Hermione asked raising an eyebrow.
Draco snapped back to reality.
"Yes I promise" Draco stated.
Hermione let out a deep breath and said "Don't make me regret this."
"I won't" Draco stated.
Hermione nodded and started walking ahead of him.
"Oh, one more thing" Draco called out.
Hermione stopped walking and turned and looked at him.
"What's that?" she asked.
"Call me Draco."
