Falling into Destiny
Chapter Thirty-One
You felt light. It was almost like you were made of air, floating in the sky. High above most of the structures, you were able to see the rolling green hills in the distance. The lake reflected green and the blue of the sky in different measures, adding touches of gray from its murky depths. The scent of a warm spring was in the air even as a cooler wind blew over your skin. You shivered as you gripped onto one of the metal guardrails placed into the otherwise open gothic archways.
Behind you a hand gently brushed hair away from your shoulder. Strong but gentle fingers brushed along the curve of your neck. Such a light touch was almost a tickle. The person’s other arm wrapped around your shoulder, resting intimately between your chest as the arm dangled.
“It’s been a while, little one.”
“That’s your fault,” you said as you smiled softly and relaxed back into the much taller man.
Though you couldn’t see it, you could practically feel your father smiling behind you. You didn’t get to actually see or talk to your father very often but in his own way he was attentive. He apparently kept track of you well enough to know when major things were happening in your life. Like how a wand, which was compatible with you, had suddenly shown up on your bed the day you needed it the most. When he did show up he was attentive and affectionate to a degree that no one else had shown you; Draco had been the closest to compare him to. Your father’s affectionate touches may have seemed strange to outsiders but you were kind of used to them by now. They were as much a part of who he was as the sound of his voice; more so actually considering that, according to him, he changed himself often. Much how your hair had shifted to better suit the family that had taken you in, your father changed to suit his...nightly companions. It was just that he was able to do so in a far more extreme way than you unknowingly had. In actuality you couldn’t even be sure if the face he presented to you was even his real one. You tried not to let that bother you too much.
“What classes have you chosen for yourself?” He asked as he continued to hold you from behind.
“Classes?” You asked in a bit of confusion.
The ethereal quality of the dreamscape pulling at you in a distracting way. Even for you it was hard to focus in the unconscious meeting of minds.
“You’re going into your third year. Students choose new classes to add onto their workload,” he spoke out, poking at the mist with his reminder.
“How do you know that?” You asked, drawing your brows together in confusion.
“I’ve visited plenty of Hogwarts students over the years, enough to keep up with modern wizarding trends.”
You nodded, hair getting a little messed up as it bunched against his chest before relaxing into a semblance of its place. Then your mind caught on to what he said and started to try to sift through the information. Anything you could find out about your elusive parent was of interest to you, enough that it helped to keep the dreamwebs away.
“Modern? Choosing more classes for the third year has been done for generations.”
He soothed your hair back down while he spoke. “Hogwarts was still in its infancy when I was a student there. The educational structure of them is vastly different than now.”
Oh wow.
“You were a student at Hogwarts?!”
“Yes,” his tone was jovial as though holding in a laugh.
“What house were you in?”
“Slytherin - same as you, little one. Or should I say that you’re in the same one I was?”
That was a lot to take in. In a relatively short time you’d found out a lot about your father's past. He was older than the current class system in Hogwarts. He actually went to Hogwarts in the first place. And to top it off he’d been in Slytherin!
His hand jostled you a little to regain your attention. “Your classes?”
“Arithmancy, Divination and Ancient Runes. I wanted to take Care of Magical Creatures...only…I haven’t had the best of luck with all of the ones I’ve encountered on my own. It’s like...I make them crazy...”
He made a sound of understanding behind you. “They sense what you are and they fear you.”
“But why? Why are they afraid of me?”
“If a creature like a dragon was near by, wouldn’t you be afraid?”
“I’m not a dragon—“
“But you are a predator. They can sense that in you and they are afraid. With good reason —- You have the potential to be the strongest witch of the last Millennia. You may even surpass what I attained if you put in the effort.”
“Is that a nice way of saying that you were the strongest wizard when you were alive?”
“I’m not dead.”
“Yes but you don’t really have a physical body anymore...so you’re not exactly alive either.”
“Not the same as being dead.”
“Uh-Huh,” you remarked with a hint of sass.
“You’ll see. In time you’ll learn one does not need a body to exist. To think so limits your possibilities. Do not limit yourself to one way of seeing the world.”
“I’ll try not to. I’m already keeping up on wandless magic, how hard could it be to resist limiting my education?” You asked in a rather light tone despite the fact that your father had gotten rather serious.
“Considering what I’ve seen of your fellow witches? Apparently it’s a nearly impossible task. Narcissa for example...she limited her understanding of magical reproduction and I ensured she paid for her mistake. She will continue to regret her cruelty towards you as you outshine all the other purebloods.”
“Father…” you whispered as you finally moved out of his hold. You looked up at him in an admonishing way. “You’re being rude.”
“I am not. I’m just pointing out her flaws. It was a grievous mistake on her part to disregard you so unjustly.”
“She didn’t understand. I don’t really understand...how could she?”
“She’s older and should have been more informed than you. Lucius was. Her callousness hurt you and I will not abide that,” your father said as he ran his hand through your hair as though you hadn’t meant to distance yourself. “The Zabini have proven to be more open minded. That is good. You will need a strong foundation to continue on at that school of yours.”
Well now you felt worried. “...why?”
“Hogwarts holds more secrets than even the founders truly realized. There are magics so old in the bones of the castle that they are not taught anymore, magics that predate the foundations. Some have either turned into myths or have been forgotten all together. Much like the knowledge of your creation. But you will not be forgotten and cast to myth. You will thrive there. But there are some that will seek to tame and control you. Remember that in your blood and soul are magics as old and as powerful as time. If you learn what others can not...and no one will be able to match you. No one will be able to tame you; not even me.”
“Take me...why would I need to be tamed?” You asked quietly after his speech.
You stilled as he leaned over and kiss the top of your hair. “You don’t. That is why I’m excited to see how far you will rise in the coming years. Embrace your heritage and you’ll reshape the world as you know it.”
If only you knew the heritage he was talking about. You knew that you were a cambion. You knew that your father claimed you were a witch through and through, that there was no muggle heritage in your veins. You knew that your mother had been a pureblood as well; from the house of Black. Youjust didn’t know your father’s line or how many magical bloodlines he had fuzzed in your creation.. If you did you might have felt overwhelmed.
“I’ll try… but it’ll be hard enough to keep up with my classes as it is. Even though I’m learning how to regulate my energy better I’m not sure I’ll be able to do more research on top of all my classes,” you told your father as his fingers lingered in your hair.
As he pulled away to stare into your eyes, you stared into his. An idea started to form in your head as you stared into his eyes. You couldn’t be sure if he was putting the thought into your head or if it was your brain putting the puzzle pieces together as you stared into the windows of his soul. They seemed hypnotic in a way that wasn’t possible. At least it wasn’t possible in the waking world. The dreamscape was much more pliable, much more subjective to a person’s will.
“...you go into people’s dreams to get energy don’t you? Because you normally aren’t tangible…”
“A simplified version but yes,” he answered.
“Can you teach me to do that? Show me how to get energy from people in their dreams...and teach me how to change my appearance in people’s heads. That way I can get all the energy I need.”
One thing was for certain - the smile that warmed your father’s face was full of pride.
“Little one, I thought you’d never ask.”
