Just one night. Please.
Snape was sitting on his bed, a glass cradled between his hands, black eyes staring thoughtfully into the water's mirrored surface, a frown creasing his pale forehead.
When he had heard Thea's screams he had apparated immediately, the fear in her voice chilling him. He had expected to feel fury at what had happened to her; fury for Draco's sadism, fury for what he himself had done to Thea, and fury for this whole sorry situation.
What he hadn't expected was to feel an odd tug in his chest as Lucius pulled Thea away from him, and out of his arms.
Snape's jaw tightened, causing his lips to thin more than usual. He had feelings for the girl, that much was obvious. But he could not afford such luxuries, he had worked too hard and for too long to risk discovery or death because of a few weak emotions. It wasn't in his nature to play the hero, the saviour, the lover. But he couldn't deny that, no matter what had occurred between them, he seemed to have developed into Thea's mentor, the one she turned to for some guidance, to confess to, for some comfort.
Snape thought back to earlier in the evening when Thea had wrapped her arms around him, her face turned against his neck so trustingly, whilst at the same time she hid from the situation. She turned to Snape to hide herself in, and that thought disturbed him more than the idea of a sexual relationship with the girl.
When the knock sounded at his door, Snape knew who it would be before he opened the heavy, wooden door. He dared not believe it however, until he was gazing upon Thea's bruised face, her bottom lip unnaturally swollen, one eye swelling shut and coloured a vicious purple, an acidic yellow ting stretching across her cheek.
"Come in." He spoke first, noticing the brightness in her eyes, and the slight trembling of her limbs.
Thea moved stiffly into his room, instantly heading for the bed, and carefully lowering herself on its edge.
She swallowed. "Lucius wanted to. . .he wanted to. . ."
Snape shook his head, his black hair swaying and falling across his pale face.
"I can imagine." His voice was tight, bitter almost, but Thea had finally realised that his anger was not directed at her; never directed at her.
Thea placed her hands together in her lap, looking down as her fingers interlocked. She sighed once, heavily, her forehead creased in a frown, her mouth held in a taut line, creating an expression of complete seriousness and resignation.
"Well, you know how he is."
Her tone did not imply that she found his behaviour acceptable, it was more akin to that of a mother who knew her offspring well enough to understand that they would not, nor could not, change.
"Clean me up?" She asked, eyes flicking up to Snape's, her face open and inquiring. It was so rare that he saw her like this, that for a moment Snape almost fancied that his breath caught in his throat, and that something tightened in his lower abdomen.
Don't be ridiculous; how fanciful! He ridiculed himself inwardly, and he stepped forwards to assist Thea, and help ease some of her pain.
"I need to examine your injuries." He stated matter-of-factly, already getting down to business.
Thea sighed once more. "I was hoping I could keep my clothes on around you for once."
Snape looked up sharply, prepared to be confronted with anger and exasperation. He was instead met with tired but teasing eyes, and he allowed a small smile to tug at his lips.
"I'm afraid not."
Thea chuckled at his gentle teasing, and carefully eased her top away from her body, nimble fingers making fast work of the small buttons.
Snape did not need to avert his eyes, he knew her body too well now. And besides, the worst of her injuries encompassed her entire right side, a nasty black bruise spreading up like greedy fingers, disappearing beneath the swell of her breast.
"I think perhaps it would be best if you lie down." Snape spoke, his hand moving up to her shoulder, and gently easing her back on the bed. Thea obeyed, her eyes peering up at the ceiling unseeing. She stifled a yawn beneath the back of her hand, wincing as the movement jarred her injured side.
Snape's cool, skilled fingers gently probed at Thea's flesh, pausing in their administrations when she winced, or sucked air through her teeth in a clear gesture of pain.
As the spell began to take effect, however, Thea's eyelids grew heavy, her green eyes weighted with sleep, and as the shock began to set in, she started to doze.
She woke gently, when she felt the presence of someone over her. Opening tired eyes, she found herself within inches of Snape's pale face, his expression serious, as always.
"We had best get you back to your room." He murmured, seeming unwilling to rouse who too greatly from her sense of peace.
"No." Thea said simply. "I want to stay."
She saw the muscle in Snape's jaw tighten, and then he moved away. He stood up, his hands folding behind his back, and his legs moving him in an unconscious pace.
He cleared his throat.
"I don't think that's wise."
Thea found the energy to roll her eyes.
"Oh Snape, honestly." She shifted her position on the bed, realising as she did so that her shirt was once again fastened closed. Calmly, lazily, she crawled into the large, soft bed and pulled the covers over herself, shivering slightly as she did so.
"It's just for one night. Please."
Her eyes closed, though she was waiting for his reply.
When she felt the weight shift under new weight, she smiled a small, lazy smile, lifting the covers up so that Snape could crawl in.
She could hear him removing his robes, and then felt as the mattress gave against his weight as he rolled in.
He kept a distance from her, and sighing quietly Thea moved closer so that her body was pressed against his side.
"Roll over." She murmured sleepily against the long length of his neck. He obeyed, turning so that he was facing her, arms moving slowly around her.
Thea sighed contentedly, moving closer so that she was fully pressed against his length. She felt his body stiffen, his way of creating distance, and she caressed his back through the shirt he still wore.
Her movements seemed to relax him, and soon he fit against her body like it had always been this way; just the two of them.
His own hands began to rub soothing circles across her lower back, and he was careful not to touch any of her injured areas.
So gentle. . . . Thea thought in satisfaction. If only more knew. . . .
She sighed once more, her breath warm against Snape's face. Her head fit perfectly beneath his chin, the corner of her mouth pressed to his neck. She turned her head slightly, and pressed a kiss to his pulse point, feeling the ache from her damaged bottom lip.
Her hands moved under his shirt stealthily, and soon she was laying her cool hands on his flesh. She felt, rather than heard, Snape sigh, his arms pulling her closer convulsively.
She continued to allow her hands to travel the length of Snape's back, feeling out every contour and plane. When his hands moved under her top to do the same, Thea smiled drowsily.
The movements were so soothing, and created such a delicious warmth, that soon Thea knew she could stay awake no longer.
"Thank you, Severus." She murmured against his neck, his first name spilling easily from her lips. What was the need for formalities now?
Snape remained silent, though his hands did not cease in their ministrations.
"Good night." Thea whispered, moving so that she could press a kiss to Snape's lips, before placing her head on the pillow and falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.
Snape gazed at her face for a time in the darkness, before laying his head on the pillow next to Thea's, and closing his eyes, though sleep did not touch him for a long time.
