Chapter 29: End-Game
State of Mind
April 2nd
“Roslyn says that you’ve been very quiet since
the incident,” Josie said gently. “It’s
been almost a month…have you spoken with either Sirius or Severus?”
Eris sighed and continued to look out through
the window. “I’ve been avoiding Sirius,
but Severus comes and finds me once a day.
He doesn’t always say anything…I think he’s just afraid that I’m going
to disappear.”
“Should he be afraid of that,” Josie asked.
“I have no intention of disappearing. Quite the opposite really,” Eris said flatly.
“Meaning…”
“I don’t intend to let anyone forget that I’m
around.” Eris looked towards Josie and
offered her a small smile. “I want to
talk to Sirius, but it’s still just so uncomfortable. He didn’t…I mean it wasn’t…”
“He wasn’t trying to hurt you,” Josie cut in
softly, “but it ended up being too close to rape for comfort.”
“Severus says that Sirius really thought I
knew what I was doing,” Eris whispered.
“He must feel horrible, but I just can’t even look at him without
feeling so conflicted. He’s my mate and
I love him, but I’m so angry with him right now. He’s made things so much more complicated.”
“All our lives are complicated at this point,
honey,” Josie said with a small smile.
“I want to badly to take you and your brother and drag you back to the
States with me. My first instinct is to
believe you’d be safe there, but I know it would never last.”
Eris fixed Josie with a hard
look. “One way or another, Josie, this
thing is going to end very soon. You
can’t stop it and I can’t stop it, so all we have to do is ride it out and see
where this takes us.”
“Does that frighten you,” Josie asked with a
small frown, “feeling powerless?”
“I never said I was powerless,” Eris said
carefully. “I only said that I can’t
stop it. I can see where the wind takes me and help things along. Swimming with the current is much easier than
struggling against it, don’t you agree?”
“It’s a fact of science,” Josie said softly.
There was
knock at the door then and Naiya poked her head into
the room. “Dr. Green, your daughter says
that its time for you to head back.”
“Thank you, Naiya,”
Josie said brightly. Eris didn’t
understand how the woman had the energy to protect such cheerfulness no matter
what was going on. Josie turned back to
her and Eris tried to give her a reassuring smile. She did not want to worry the woman who had
always taken such good care of her.
“Eris, I’ll see you in a few days if you feel like you need to talk.”
“That sounds good,” Eris said. “Give Quentin a kiss and hug for me when you
see him.”
Josie gave her an odd look, but quickly
morphed it into a smile. “Of course, dear. I’m
sure h’ed like to see you again one of these days.”
Eris shook her head. “When all this is over…maybe. For now, keep that baby where its safe.”
Josie gave her a warm hug. “You just worry about keeping yourself safe.”
Eris rolled her eyes. “I always do!”
Josie left then and Naiya quickly took her place, motioning for Eris to retake
her seat. “How have you been feeling?”
Eris glared at the elf. “What’s the matter, Naiya? Are you afraid that I won’t take proper care
of your future mate?”
Naiya suddenly
looked very sad. “I thought we’d move
past that, little sister. You need
someone to stand with you until you feel ready to rejoin your mate and tell him
your secret.”
“Ginny is taking care of me,” Eris said
stiffly.
“I do not object to you telling Ginny the
truth. Her family has deep roots amongst
the elves,” Naiay said gently. “But you need a little extra help. Your wizarding folk
have special spells to monitor the child’s growth. I think that we should bring Madam Pomfrey
into the fold…or perhaps Roslyn.”
“Children,” Eris said quietly.
“What did you say,” Naiya
asked sharply.
“I said ‘children’, as in plural,” Eris
snapped, getting irritated with the elf.
“You’re having twins?”
“No, I’m having two babies. They’re only half-siblings.”
Naiya sat in silence
for long time after that. Eris could see
the cogs in the elf’s head spinning and grinding as she worked out exactly what
had happened. “Severus helped the
bonding?”
“Yes.”
Naiya
frowned. “Was he in physical contact
with both you and Sirius as you were bonding?”
“I know he was touching me the whole
time. I don’t know if he and Sirius were
in contact, but we were very close together.”
Eris was trying not to hold her breath.
She still had no idea how she’d ended up with a child each from both
Severus and Sirius. It seemed that she
was about to gain the answer.
“I’ve never heard of this happening before,” Naiya said slowly, “but considering how strong your
feelings for Severus are I can’t say that I’m entirely surprised that you
managed to pull enough of his essence into you to create a child. This makes matters…more interesting.”
“Indeed,” Eris said smoothly, trying to ignore
how much she sounded like her mentor.
“It will be another month before spells will be able to determine their
sex.”
“By then you’ll be able to sense them with
your own elven powers,” Naiya
said softly. There was a fond smile on
her face. “You’ll be able to distinguish
which is which too.”
“I’ll be able to tell which one is Sirius’ and
which one is Severus’,” Eris asked and sighed as Naiya
nodded. She wasn’t sure why that meant
so much to her. Perhaps because she
wanted to be able to tell Ginny when the time came.
“So you’ll consider talking with Roslyn,” Naiya asked gently.
“Yes, I will.”

April 10th
Severus sighed as he sat watching
Eris read. They were in the ante room of
the common room. “Will you put that down
for just a little while?”
Eris glared at him over the top of
her book. “It’s important that we find
that Horcrux, Severus.”
“I agrees,” Severus said gently. “Still, you should try to interact with
everyone once in a while. You’ve been
far too secluded for the past month.”
“I wonder why that could be,” Eris said airily.
Severus closed his eyes and
pinched the bridge of his nose. He’d
been trying almost none stop for the past month to try and get Eris to actually
talk to him, not just snipe at him a bit once a day. She wasn’t even looking at Black if she
didn’t need to. How the hell had this
all gone so wrong? Perhaps it was time
for a little tough love. “I demand that
you cease this childish behavior and explain to me why you can’t even speak to
your mate to scold him. It would be a
start and you could get some of these bad feelings off your chest.”
“I’m sure I’ll get there eventually,” Eris
said in the same nonchalant tone.
Severus jumped up from his seat
and stalked over to Eris’ chair. The way
Eris’ eyes widened slightly in fear didn’t slip passed him. “You’re going to start speaking with your
mate even if I have to tie you down to this chair and drag him in here.”
Eris’ eyes narrowed and she stood
up from her chair in a smooth motion.
“Would you like that,” she purred, “to tie me down and be in complete
control.”
The witch
was circling him then and trailed a hand down his back. He stood ram-rod straight, clenching his
hands at his sides. “Of
course not.”
She
stopped in from of him, staring at him through half-lidded eyes. “I think you would. I think you want very badly to be in Sirius’
place.”
Severus had to work very hard not
to touch Eris when she sidled up to him and draped her arms loosely around his
neck. “I care a great deal about you,
Eris, but Sirius is your mate.”
“I’d say you initiated a triad, Sev,” Eris said huskily.
“Wouldn’t you like to pick up where Sirius left off? After all, it really isn’t fair that he’s
gotten so much more than you out of this relationship so far.”
“I won’t…”
“Oh you would,” Eris snapped. “Are you forgetting that I can read everyone
I come across like an open book if I want?
Your mind is open to me, as are your emotions. I can feel how much you want me.”
Severus closed his eyes and felt
Eris place a gentle kiss on the tip of his nose. Then she was gone and he was left wondering
how he was going to get his charge’s head screwed back on straight.

April 14th
Sirius poked his head around the
edge of the bookshelf to stare at where Draco, Ginny, and Eris were
studying. Hermione was with them as
well, but he was sure that she was searching for their missing Horcrux. Eris looked
lovely, her hair back in a simply braid and trailing onto the table where Draco
was playing with the tail end of it. She
was dressed in a comfy looking pair of jeans and a loose, green sweater. Her face seemed to be glowing and Sirius
could just slightly feel a tendril of warmth flowing into him from her. She’d shut herself down from all of them, but
she wasn’t able to completely remove her presence from his mind. He could often sense of she was feeling, but
it was only a tiny sliver of emotion in his mind.
“Come out here, Sirius,” she called suddenly
and he stiffened. “I know you’re there
so you might as well come out.”
He stepped out and was immediately
met by the twin glares of Ginny and Draco.
Hermione looked a bit apologetic.
“Hello,” he said softly.
Eris wasn’t even looking at
him. “Did you need something, Sirius?”
Sirius cleared his throat,
stepping a bit closer to Eris. “I was
just wondering how you are.”
“I’m fine, Sirius,” Eris said gently. “Severus could have told you that…or aren’t
you two speaking to each other?”
“Severus is still upset with me for being
stupid enough to think…well…you know,” Sirius said lamely. “You really shouldn’t blame him for what
happened.”
“Yes, yes,” Eris said with a sigh. “I know, he just did what he thought was
right and managed to drag you right along with him. Did you two even consider simply discussing
what you had learned with me?”
Sirius felt himself blushing a
bit. “Severus seemed to think that there
was no point in trying. You’d been so
opposed to the idea from the beginning.”
Eris looked at him for a moment and he drank
in the sight of her jewel eyes. “I
suppose you’re right.”
“Could we go for a walk,” Sirius asked
hopefully.
Eris gave him a speculative look. “Ask me again in a week or two, Sirius. I want to make sure that I don’t say or do
anything I regret and I’m just too angry with you right now.”
Sirius hung his head. “I understand. I love you, Eris, and I’ll try and talk to you
again in a couple weeks.”
He began to walk away when Eris
called out to him softly, “I love you too.”

April 20th
“Alright, Harry, I want you to create the lava
flow by yourself and then Eris is going to cool it and launch it at the
target.” Harry nodded at Tahdei and turned to see if Eris was ready.
“I’m going to start now,” Harry said
softly. He knew he could do this without
Eris’ help, but it was always so much easier when she was there, in his mind,
helping him accomplish things. Her
unbending confidence in both herself and him always made things go
smoothly. He summoned up the stream of
earth and quickly set the fire to work on it.
Soon a smooth flow of lava was spinning in a chain before him. Eris set to work quickly, pulling the flow
closer to her and dousing it with water and sending a chilled wind to help it
harden quickly. Within moments there was
a sharpened spike of pumice. Harry
watched with a slight smile as the spike flew dead center through the
target. Harry didn’t think Naiya or Tahdei could possibly
have any complaints about that.
“Excellent,” Tahdei
said happily. “Both of you have been
exhibiting wonderful and complete control.
You’re still a little shaky when you’re not actually working with your
link, but just continue to practice the control.”
“May I leave,” Eris asked.
Harry sighed as Tahdei dismissed her.
He’d been hoping to take a walk with his sister and discuss how she’d
been feeling. Once Eris was out of
sight, Harry signaled for Sirius to come out of hiding. His godfather slipped off the borrowed
invisibility cloak. “Sorry that you had
to stay under for so long, Sirius.”
“Why didn’t she know I was here? She can usually sense me no matter what I
do,” Sirius asked with a confused look.
“Tahdei and I were
overloading her so that she couldn’t tell you were here unless she was
specifically looking for you,” Harry said happily. “I just wanted you to get to watch her for a
while.”
“Well, I really do appreciate it,” Sirius
said. “She asked me to give her a little
more time before we really start interacting again. She smiles at me in the halls and she still
sits close to me in class, but it’s just not the same. I want to hold her hand again. I want to kiss her.”
“You just have to be patient,” Harry said
gently. “You and Severus both owe it to
her to just let her wear her anger off as she sees fit. I don’t think you have much longer to wait.”
Harry smiled at his godfather and
motioned for him to begin walking with him up to the school. Tahdei waved them
both off and headed towards the Forbidden
Forest. The elf always seemed to be happier there so
Harry wished him well. The Spring season was beautiful and uncharacteristically
warm. In the back of his mind was the
hope that this was a sign that the Dementors were no
longer breeding.
“What has Eris been up to,” Sirius asked.
Harry frowned and tried to
remember everything he’d seen his sister doing.
“She’s been studying like mad with Hermione and Draco. Those three, I swear, they’re probably the
last people in the world who have to worry about studying but they never
stop. We’ve all been trying to track
down the final Horcrux. Hermione suspects that it might actually be
something that belonged to one of Rowena Revenclaw’s
children or grandchildren. She’s been
brewing a lot, which I think is a good sign.”
“Why do you say that,” Sirius asked with a
half smile.
Harry shrugged. “Jackie and Zach say that she’s always at her
happiest when she’s inventing new potions.
She brews simple potions as an act of relaxation.”
“I can’t see how that works,” Sirius said
wryly..
“I agree,” Harry said with a smile. “Potion making only makes my head hurt, but
to each his own.”
“True,” Sirius said softly. Harry was concerned for his godfather. The man seemed so lonely at this point. He was spending more time with students who
had no idea who he really was than he was with Order members. Severus didn’t seem to be talking to him very
often and Remus just seemed too angry still to commiserate with his old friend. Harry understood Remus’ anger, but he’d hoped
that the man would have calmed down by now.
It seemed like several of the core members of the Order, at this point,
were set on tearing each other apart.
“As long as we all keep doing what we need to
do to win this war,” Harry said slowly, “then we’ll be able to fix everything
when the danger has passed and tensions have gone down.”
“Do we have that luxury,” Sirius asked quietly.
Harry bit his lip and sighed. He didn’t know. He really just didn’t know.

May 1st
Sirius took a deep breath and
stepped out in front of Eris as she walked passed his hiding place with
Hermione and Ginny. He held out a small
bouquet of pale pink roses to her.
“Flowers for you, my lady.”
Eris smiled a coy little
smile. “What’s the occasion, good sir?”
Sirius smirked. “Do I need any reason to shower my love with
flowers and affection?”
“Probably not,” Eris said with a laugh. “Are you here to claim your walk?”
Sirius suddenly felt nervous. “Only if you’re free.”
Eris handed her bag to Ginny (who
looked a bit unsure of the situation) and extended her hand to him. “Lead the way.”
They made
their way out onto the grounds in a pleasant silence. Sirius took the time to savor the feel of
Eris’ hand in his. There was a light
breeze in the air and Sirius gazed fondly at the Whomping Willow as it tried to
chase the Spring birds from its branches.
Fluffy clouds filled the air and he admired the serenity that the
Hogwarts grounds exuded, even though it was a false image.
Eris must have been admiring the
clouds as well because she chose to comment on them. “Have you ever cloud gazed?”
Sirius smiled. “Once…a long time ago. It was a favorite pastime of your mother’s
and she managed to drag your father, Remus and I into it once before we all
graduated.”
Eris suddenly conjured a blanket
and laid it out on the ground. She sat
down on it and patted the ground beside her.
“Come on. Let’s see if you can
manage one more round.”
Sirius complied and together they lay
back on the blanket, staring at the sky.
Staring at the bits of fluff, Sirius managed to pick out a few obscure
shapes. “I think I see a rabbit.”
Eris leaned close to him and he
held his breath. “Where?”
“Right above us,” he said, pointing up at the
sky. He turned his head to look at Eris
at their noses brushed. He loved the
fact that she didn’t pull away. “Did you see it?”
“Yeah, I saw it,” Eris said quietly.
Sirius flicked his gaze down to
Eris’ lips and then quickly back to her eyes.
Slowly, he moved to her and placed a gentle kiss on her lips. Her eyes fluttered closed and he allowed
himself a long moment to taste her before pulling back again. “Do you know how much I love you?”
Eris kept her eyes closed. “Almost as much as I love
you.”
“More,” Sirius whispered. “I feel like I can’t breathe without you.”
Eris’ eyes snapped open and he
could see that there was still a slow, simmering anger in them. More importantly, he saw a good deal of
regret and didn’t know how to pace it.
“Things are going to get much worse around here before they get better,
Sirius. We’re both going to need to keep
our heads on straight.”
“I can’t do that if I don’t have you,” Sirius
said fiercely, sitting up. “We need each
other to…”
“Make me as powerful as I need to be and we’ve
done that already,” Eris said firmly. “Now
you’re just going to have to sit back and see what I do next.”
Sirius sat with his mouth hanging
open as he watched Eris flounce away.
When had she become so…provocative?
Where was his straight-laced, studious and genteel girl? She’d always been a bit fiery and fierce, but
this sassy and sexy teasing were new in the mix. Perhaps it was time for a little talk with
Severus. Sirius had the horrible feeing
that sweet, little Eris was cooking up revenge.

May 16th
“Alright, Eris, are you ready to find out what
you’re having,” Roslyn asked in an excited tone.
Eris smiled at her friend and
teacher. “Cast away, Ros. It’s high time these midgets had names.”
Ginny and Naiya
each held one of Eris’ hands as Roslyn cast the spells. The American gave her a brilliant smile when
her tests were done. “Eris, you’re
having one bouncing baby boy and one sweet little girl. Can you tell which is which?”
Eris closed her eyes and
concentrated. She placed her hands over
her stomach. The children were pressed
close together despite all the room they still had. “Severus’ is on the left and Sirius’ is on
the right.”
Roslyn nodded and cast another
spell. “Well, it looks like the little
girl is Severus’ and the boy belongs to Sirius.”
Eris smiled. “Then their names are Serena and Regulus.”
Ginny squeezed her hand. “I think Regulus would like that. Have you talked to him about it?”
Eris shook her head. “I haven’t spoken with him for a while.”
“Maybe you should try,” Ginny said. “I’m sure he’d like to hear about this.”
“Maybe I will.”
Eris and Ginny left Roslyn’s
office and were walking down the hall.
They left Naiya to speak with Roslyn. Ginny seemed concerned about something and
quickly voiced the reason. “Why haven’t
you spoken with Regulus?”
Eris frowned at her friend. “He doesn’t know anything about the final Horcrux, Gin.
There’s nothing he can really help me with anymore. The secrets that the dead gain in the
afterlife can’t be shared, only what they knew before they passed.”
“So, that’s why you still don’t know what
happens to Severus,” Ginny asked.
Eris nodded. “Though I really have no
idea if the dead know the future.
They’ve been vague about Severus’ fate from the beginning though.”
“They?”
“Harry told me about some of the things mother
and father told him,” Eris said softy.
“They know something about Sev, but they’re
not telling.”
“Do you really think he’s going to die,” Ginny
asked sadly.
Eris sighed and put her arm around
Ginny’s shoulders. “I can’t see any
other reason, luv.
I think you’ll make a wonderful mentor, but I wish I could stop this.”
“It just doesn’t seem fair,” Ginny
growled. “I don’t think that man has
ever been free. Just when he has a
chance for some happiness he’s going to get snatched away.”
Eris frowned. “You can’t look at death as though its some prison we go to.
Its as sure a form of freedom as being a
newborn without a care in the world.”
Ginny gave her a worried
look. “Just don’t be too eager to go
there, Eris. We need you here.”
Eris leaned down and kissed Ginny
on the forehead. “Never forget, Ginny that
everything happens for a reason, even if we can’t understand it in the moment
it occurs.”
That was
when Eris noticed Hermione running towards them. The bushy-haired Gryffindor stopped in front
of them and waited a moment to catch her breath. When she spoke, her tone was excited. “We’ve found it! We know what the last Horcrux
is.”
A wave of
cold washed over Eris. Time was up.

May 28th
Severus sat back in his chair and
accepted the glass of scotch that Eris was handing to him. He took a long drink and sighed. “It’s quite frustrating actually, knowing
what that damned thing is and that it’s in the school, but not being able to
locate it.”
He watched as Eris sat on the arm
of his chair and began to toy with his hair.
“Yes, I know. Hermione’s all in
tizzy over the fact that they haven’t located it yet. She’s quite convinced that it’s in the
library, but the room is massive and there are numerous places it could be
hidden.”
“We’ll find it eventually,” Severus said
sleepily. He felt incredibly relaxed as
Eris began to knead his shoulders.
“Voldemort is poised to strike very soon, but I think that we will still
be able to hold him off long enough to finish this task.”
Eris slipped off the chair and
pulled on his arm. “Come on, Severus. Stand up so I can get this damned outer robe
off of you. I’ll never get these knots
out of your shoulders working through it.”
Severus complied with a yawn,
allowing Eris to not only remove the robe, but his frock coat as well, undoing
the buttons with a flick of her wand. He
was left in his trousers and a loose shirt.
It was unlike him to be so relaxed, but the ante room seemed so peaceful
and he and Eris had been at odds for so long that he had no desire to ruin the
mood. When Eris was done, he slipped
back into the chair, taking another long sip of scotch. Eris began to rub his shoulders again and it
felt absolutely wonderful. “That’s nice,
love.”
“I know,” Eris whispered. He felt her lean down and brush a kiss
against his neck.
When Eris’ hands slipped down his
front and began undoing the buttons of his shirt alarm bells went off in his
head. “What…”
“Shush now, Sev. Just let me take care of you for a change,”
Eris said huskily.
Severus tried to pull away and
found that his body was nothing but dead weight. “What have you done,” he rasped.
“It was just a tiny potion, Sev,” Eris said, stepping around in front of him with a
wicked smirk on her face. “Turn about is
fair play after all.”
“Why are you doing this?”
Eris’ expression became stony
then. “Because I need you to be a good
little wizard in the coming days. Merlin
knows that you’d get yourself killed if I didn’t watch out for you. I plan for you to outlive me long enough to
take care of a few dirty jobs for me.”
Severus’ head was swimming with
all the things Eris could be implying.
“Eris, love, you don’t need to do this.
Nothing is going to happen to either one of us.”
Eris knelt in front of him, her
hands on his thighs. “That’s where you’re
wrong. I’d like very much for us to live
Severus, both of us, but I don’t think you’re going to like what it takes to
get what I want.”
“Give me the antidote and we can talk about
this civilly, Eris.”
“Oh, there’s no antidote, Sev. You just have to let the potion wear off, but
there are a few…long lasting after effects.”
Eris was unbuttoning his shirt again as she continued to speak. “The heaviness will disappear and you’ll be
able to function completely, but your mind will be quite susceptible to outside
influence.”
“How do I counter act the potion,” Severus
rasped.
He watched with wide eyes as Eris
climbed into his lap and pulled him into a deep kiss. When she was done, she whispered in his ear,
“I have to die.”
He closed his eyes, cursing
silently. The girl had finally gone over
the edge. “You tied the potion to your
life force?”
He felt her nod. “It draws its power from my magic, allowing
the more important effects to be quite long lasting. It’s also completely tasteless. One of my better concoctions I must say.”
She stood then and moved away from
him. He was trying with all his might to
move, but it was like he was made of stone.
“What are you planning to do?”
Eris’ eyes held no warmth as she
turned her wand on him. “I plan on
putting you where you need to be, Severus.
Imperio!”
It felt as though he was locked in
some small corner of his mind then and the rest of his consciousness was
waiting for Eris’ orders. She placed
herself in his lap once more and he could only think that her face seemed to be
that of someone else, twisted into some grotesque combination of a sneer and pained
grimace. “Now, Severus, I need to tell
you about someone you’re going to kill.”
