No One Comes When You Cry
My beta pittwitch, thanks again. Pointing out the many faults. lol
Chapter 32 An Oath
Severus, Albus and Minerva stood, scowling at the lot of them. The laughter soon died down under the glares of the three Professors. Albus spoke sternly to them.
“I am ashamed of you all. It has taken a long time to persuade this young lady to join the Order. She has answered your questions honestly, but you have upset her with your reaction.”
He turned to Sky. “Sky would you mind? Just to prove to them that you are indeed, telling the truth.” He indicated the door and Severus took her hand and led her over to it.
She followed him and pulled open the door, revealing Albus’ office.
They all gawped as they realised what they were seeing. Severus closed the door and whispered something to Sky. She looked at him a bit unsure but he nodded and she opened it again. This time it was her living room in the wall that they saw.
“Bloody hell.”
“Where is that?” Asked two young men who surprised her in that they both looked exactly the same.
“It’s my wall where Sal and the others looked after me.” She told them quietly.
“Sky, is that you, dear?” Came a voice from inside.
“Rowena.” She cried and ran inside. “Rowena, they don’t believe me. “They laughed at me, Rowena. It was horrible.”
Everyone in the kitchen could hear her sobbing to the woman, even though they couldn’t see her. They either hung their heads or looked away, ashamed of what they had done. Severus gave them a look that said, ’Are you satisfied now?’ then went in after Sky, closing the door behind him. ’Let Albus sort them out.’ He thought. ‘Gits.’ He sat down on the floor behind where Sky was kneeling in front of the portrait and pulled her onto his lap, cradling her as she cried.
“Severus, is this true?”
“I am afraid so, Rowena, but Albus is giving them a good dressing down as we speak. Sky has proven that she speaks the truth. I do not believe they will laugh at her again.” He leaned in to whisper to Sky. “It’s alright my love. I promised I would come to you when you cry, and here I am.”
When she heard what he said, she turned and flung her arms around his neck, squeezing him, trying to get closer to him then was humanly possible. He eventually had to break her hold before he asphyxiated.
“We have to go back in there Sky. Show them what a brave, wonderful, powerful witch you really are.”
“Can’t we stay here? I don’t like them.”
“They will not laugh again, Sky. I promise. Besides, don’t you want to find out how Lupin prefers to take his Wolfsbane? Sweet or savoury? Though in his case perhaps sour would be preferable.”
She laughed and he smiled at her. He pulled out a hanky and wiped her face before standing and pulling her up with him.
“Come on Mrs. Snape. I want my brave girl back.”
“I don’t feel very brave right now. But if they start laughing at me again I’m going back to Hogwarts and staying there. I’ll spy with you but they can get lost, and Mr. Lupin can have his potion flavoured with poop.”
He chuckled. “What is poop?”
“Shit.”
He nearly fell over laughing. He did not like her swearing but the thought of Lupin drinking shit flavoured Wolfsbane was just too funny for him. They were both still laughing when they walked back into the kitchen though Sky stopped laughing immediately when he closed the door to her haven.
All at once a babble of voices assaulted her. Everyone apologising at once and asking how she did that thing with the door as the red headed twins kept opening and closing it, only to find the corridor at the other side. She turned her head up to look at Severus who in turn was scowling at everyone else but still firmly holding her hand.
“Albus, is this really necessary? I think she has proven her point, can we not leave it at that?”
“I quite agree with you, Severus. Will everyone please settle down and give Mrs. Snape a chance to at least catch her breath. She cannot answer a dozen questions at once and you have all shown yourselves up enough this afternoon. This is not why I called you here. Now as I have already stated, Mrs. Snape has some very unique talents that will enable her to help our cause greatly.”
“Sky, would you mind showing your wand.”
She looked at the Headmaster, then at Severus and back to the Headmaster again.
“Why?”
He was a bit surprised at her question. “Because of its uniqueness, then they can see …”
“NO!” She told him angrily. “If they want magic, I’ll give them magic. But my wand stays where it is. Trust works both ways, Albus, don’t you think? So far I’ve not seen or heard anything that makes me want to join the Order. I’ve been bombarded with questions, laughed at, scared out of my wits and I don’t like it here.”
She snapped her fingers and the table flew up and smashed into the ceiling, raining chunks and splinters of wood down. Before any of it could land on anyone, she waved her hand reforming the table and lowered gently back into position. With a flick of her finger, all the members seated at the table were lifted on their seats and spun round and round, glued to their chairs and then plonked back down with a jolt. There were quite a few green faces amongst them though the twins whooped and asked for another go. Sky clapped her hands and everyone in the room was instantly in a different place than they were a moment ago. Everything she did excluded Severus, Minerva and Albus.
Spreading her arms wide, Sky looked up at the ceiling. It changed into storm clouds, lightning flashing across the sky as rain poured down onto the shocked and unsuspecting heads of all those who had mocked her.
She lowered her arms and it stopped, leaving all but herself, Severus, Albus and Minerva, drenched. When she pointed at the wall, an image of Voldemort appeared, pointing his wand at them all in turn while casting an imaginary avada. She waved it away.
“Is that enough to satisfy your curiosity? Because I have plenty more if you want it.”
The room full of people just stared at her, too stunned to speak. Severus stood and smirked, his eyes shining with mirth. He too was surprised at the display of power she just showed, but he was also extremely proud of his wife. Albus took several attempts before he could speak, his mouth opening and closing a few times before anything would come out.
“Right, well. Thank you, Mrs. Snape, I think, for that amazing display. Maybe now would be a good time to put this to the vote.”
There were a few murmurs amongst the gathering but most nodded in agreement. Severus escorted Sky into the hall, opening a door that led into a library.
“You did well in there, I was glad to see you stand up to them. Just wait here for a while. It should not take long and I will come and get you as soon as they have decided.”
He kissed her, possessing her mouth eagerly before letting go and leaving the room.
In the kitchen, the cacophony was such that everyone was trying to be heard above everyone else.
“Silence.” Albus roared. “Now, it is time to vote. Though whether or not she will agree to join us after the way you have all behaved today remains to be seen. Are any of you against Sky Morrigan Snape becoming a member of the Order of the Phoenix?”
“I am.” Moody growled. “There’s something not right about that girl.” He ignored Snape’s glare and continued. “We still don’t know where she’s been hiding all these years between her mother’s death and Snape finding her. And old biddy Black likes her. That makes her a ‘No’ in my book.”
“Where she has been is irrelevant Alastor, though she definitely was not hiding. What is important is what she can do, who she is now. She is the most trustworthy person I have ever known and would, in fact, has already risked her own life for at least one of our members.” Albus argued. “Anyone else against?” There were no hands raised so Albus asked. “Those for?”
Hands began to raise slowly, but eventually all were up, including a reluctant Moody’s and the vote was unanimous. Severus placed his hand on the doorknob.
“I shall bring her back in. Now it remains for all of you to persuade her to accept you, especially you Lupin. Bear in mind that she is the one who now makes your Wolfsbane.” He grinned inwardly at the shocked expression on Lupin’s face as he went to collect his wife.
Entering the library he found her engrossed in a book about the history of the Black family.
“Are we leaving?”
“No. The vote was unanimous. You are in.”
“Huh.” She stood and placed the book back on the shelf. Severus took her hand, led her back to the kitchen and stood at the head of the table with her.
Albus turned to her with a smile. “Sky, it has been decided to accept you into the Order of the Phoenix. Are you willing to take an oath never to divulge anything you hear or see regarding the Order, to never discuss with anyone outside of the Order any of our plans or disclose our secrets, to always be ready to assist an Order member when the need arises and not reveal their identities or the whereabouts of this house?”
“I might, it depends on them.” She told him quietly. “I don’t like them. Why can’t I just help Severus, without all this?”
“Because there may come a time when you will need them as much as we need you, Sky. Please consider this while you decide.” He spoke kindly to her and patted her shoulder, leaving her to make up her mind.
She looked at Severus now, unsure what to do as everyone in the room looked at her expectantly.
“Severus, what do you think I should do?”
“It is your decision to make. I would prefer that you accept, but I shall not tell you to do so.”
They spoke in hushed voices as she tried to make up her mind. She looked back at the others all watching her. Most of them looked shamefaced but hopeful.
“Alright I’ll do it.” She whispered to Severus.
“Good girl.” He nodded to Albus and the old man’s face broke into a smile.
“It would seem that Mrs. Snape has agreed to join us.” He told them. “Sky, it is time to take the oath.”
He passed her a parchment and told her to hold her wand tip to it as she recited the words that were written on it.
“I, Sky Morrigan Snape, undertake to uphold the laws set out by the Order of the Phoenix. To always offer protection and shelter to any member that may need it. I shall keep its secrets and never discuss events outside of these walls unless with another member. I shall do my utmost to assist in the defeat of Voldemort and his followers. As a member of this Order, I shall do my utmost to protect the innocent and overcome the guilty. This I pledge.”
Sky’s stone and wand tip threw out a dazzling red light that surrounded her and rocketed around the room before swooping back to whence it came.
“Bloody hell.” Came the twin voices of the Weasley twins above all the gasps and ooh‘s. None of them had ever seen an oath take as strongly as that. Not all of the members noticed that Sky changed one of the words in the oath. ‘Defeat of Voldemort’ actually read as ‘death of Voldemort’ in the original oath. Those who did notice said nothing for the moment.
“Right, let’s have a cup of tea. I’ve made plenty of sandwiches and cakes.” Piped a voice.
Sky turned and saw a plump woman with red hair and a cheery smile.
“Come along dear. Let’s feed you up a bit after that. You look like you need a cup of tea. I’m Molly Weasley. Those two cheeky monkeys are mine.” She placed a hand on Sky’s back and led her to the far side of the table. Sky resisted for a moment, throwing a panicked look at Severus and gripping his hand.
“Don’t worry, Molly is one of the good ones.”
He told her and turned to speak with Albus. The twins were introduced as Fred and George and soon had her laughing against her will as they told her some of the antics they’d gotten up to in the past. Several others came and introduced themselves, apologising for their earlier behaviour and asking her lots of questions she wasn’t prepared to answer. She didn’t want them all to know about her life before Hogwarts. It was bad enough that it happened. She didn’t want to discuss it with strangers.
Molly noticed her discomfort and stuck by her side, telling many of them to mind their own business. “They’re just curious dear, but you don’t have to tell them anything you don’t want to.”
Sky decided she might like Mrs. Weasley. And the twins were funny too. “I’ve never seen twins before. How did you get them?” She asked innocently.
Molly turned bright red and almost choked on her tea. “Oh my goodness, what a question.”
“I think perhaps your husband would be the best person to answer that one, preferably when you are alone.” Came a gentle, husky voice from behind her.
Sky turned to see the werewolf. “Mr. Lupin?”
“Remus please. We’re not formal here. You wished to speak with me. Is now a good time?”
“It wasn’t important, Mr. Lupin.” She told him, emphasizing the formal use of his name.
“Ah, you are still angry at me. Well I can’t say I blame you. But please accept my apologies even if you will not accept my friendship.”
She looked in his eyes and felt a bit guilty when she saw the honesty in them. His face had a slightly ravaged look about it. She figured he looked a lot older then he actually was. His sandy coloured hair was streaked with grey and the honesty in his eyes was tinged with sadness.
“I accept your apology Mr Lupin … and your friendship. If it’s still offered that is.”
He beamed at her and shook her hand. “It most certainly is Mrs. Snape. Thank you.”
Sky couldn’t help smiling back. “It’ll be nice having a friend. I’ve never had one before.” The words slipped out before she could stop them. She’d not meant to say it out loud and hated the look of pity in his face now.
“You have never had a friend? But why?”
“It doesn’t matter. I didn’t mean to say that. Will you tell me about your Lycanthropy?”
If Remus was startled by her sudden change of subject he didn’t show it.
“If you wish. Shall we sit down?”
He took her to a corner of the kitchen and began to tell her some of his life story, explaining how he became a werewolf and what happened now that he had the benefit of Professor Snape’s Wolfsbane potion.
Severus scowled at them both from the other side of the kitchen. He did not like to see his wife sitting cosy with another man. Sky was heartbroken to discover what this man had been through thus far in his life.
“Did Severus tell you that I’m making your Wolfsbane now?”
“He did. But that is not the reason I offered the hand of friendship. I like you and would have done so without the potion.”
“Thanks. Mr. Lupin, can I ask you something?”
“Anything. Go ahead. But only if you call me Remus.” He told her with a grin.
“What? Oh, okay. Mr. L…Remus what’s your favourite food?”
“My what?” He asked her laughing.
“Your favourite taste, for the Wolfsbane. I was going to make it poop flavoured but you can have it taste of something else if you like.”
“Oh Merlin are you serious? You are. You can flavour it?”
“She can indeed, Lupin. Now are you going to tell her or would you prefer the alternative?”
“Severus, Remus said we’re friends. Isn’t that great?”
Severus did not think it was ‘great’, but he could not tell her that. Instead he just raised an eyebrow at Lupin.
“Err yes. Well I like most things, but I’m not too keen on…’poop’ did you call it? Bananas are a particular favourite of mine, or chocolate, chicken. Anything you see fit to choose.”
“Chicken I can do but I don’t know what bananas are, or chocolate?”
“You’ve never had bananas or chocolate? Severus what else have you been keeping from her? Everyone needs to taste chocolate at least once in their lives.”
“Lupin, do not attempt to tell me how to feed my wife. She has no need of chocolate or any other sugary rubbish that will rot her teeth. As for fruit, she has her daily requirement, when banana‘s are available she will have them. Not that it is any of your business.”
Sky’s head turned back and forth as the two men seethed at each other, until Remus raised his hands in defeat. “I am sorry Severus, I meant no offence. It was just a bit of a surprise, that is all.”
“Yes well perhaps you would keep your comments to yourself in future.”
Taking her hand, Severus pulled her from the chair and led her away from Lupin. Sky was confused now. ‘Why did he take her away from Remus? They didn’t seem to like each other that was clear.
“Severus, what’s wrong? Why don’t you like Remus?”
“It is not your concern, and I suggest you are more careful when choosing your friends in future.”
“I’ve never had any to choose from before, he’s the only one.” She told him with a huff.
“You have me, you also have Albus and Minerva. You do not need anyone else.”
Remus’ eyes narrowed as he watched Snape lead her away. ‘The poor girl doesn’t know what she’s got herself into with him. I wonder if he lets her go to the toilet on her own or does she have to ask his permission first?’ He noticed the Weasley twins head over to talk to her and made his way over to speak with Albus.
“Does she do everything on his say so, Albus?”
“No Remus, sometimes she does have a mind of her own. I believe you witnessed it earlier. But her circumstances are such that she needs Severus to guide her. Without him, she would not even be alive.”
“And that gives him the right to control her like a living doll?”
“No it does not. And he does not control her as much as you seem to think. She gives him a run for his money Remus, believe me.”
“She’s a beauty I’ll give her that. Powerful too. But she seems so bloody innocent. How did Snape get his claws into her?”
“More powerful then you think Remus. More so than most of us in this room put together. As for Severus, he loves her and she loves him. It‘s as simple as that.”
Remus gave a small whistle. “She doesn’t look old enough to have had the chance to chose between suitors. What’s with that stone round her neck? And that wand of hers, it looked a strange one.”
“It is for Sky to tell you, not me I’m afraid. But don’t worry yourself about her. She can handle herself when she has to. She just does not know it yet.”
“I noticed she altered the wording slightly when she took her oath, Albus. So did some of the others.”
“Yes I know. I intend to ask her about it later. There are special circumstances with her, Remus, circumstances I am not at liberty to divulge. Let’s leave it at that shall we.”
Meanwhile, Severus was trying to think of an excuse to get rid of the Weasley twins. He thought keeping his wife by his side would deter any further attempts at friendship by the other members, but the Weasley twins were in a class of their own. They chatted happily to Sky, seemingly oblivious to the dark looks Severus was giving them as they constantly reached out and touched her arms, hands or shoulders whenever it suited them. And she was laughing with them, actually laughing. She did not laugh like that when she was alone with him.
Though he would never admit it, he was jealous.
Albus watched them for a while and called the Potions Master to join him in conversation with Kingsley Shacklebolt, Tonks and Arthur Weasley about the comments Mrs. Black made to Sky when she first arrived. That meant Severus had to leave her with the twins and he was not happy about it. Sky however was starting to enjoy herself a little bit. She was relaxed now and had no idea that Severus was disgruntled with her.
“Let her be Severus. Give her chance to grow. She needs this new experience.”
“I know what she needs Albus and it is not the Weasley twins.”
“She needs the chance to learn about people, discover that there is more to life then just Hogwarts, make friends. If you hold her back she may eventually resent you for it.”
“She will do what I tell her to Albus. I am quite capable of seeing to her needs and I believe I do so admirably. She has not complained so far.”
“I don’t think she dare.” Tonks piped up, earning herself a glare from Severus.
“Why is everyone suddenly so interested in MY wife’s welfare? MY wife that you all seemed to consider a laughing stock not more then a couple of hours ago. Now if you will excuse me, I am taking MY wife and leaving. Good day.”
He turned and marched over to collect HIS wife. “We’re leaving.” He told her and led her through the kitchen and out the door into the hall, closing it behind him. “I take it you do not wish to travel by portkey again. That leaves us with apparition or the door. Your choice.” He told her a bit sharply.
“Erm, door please.” She told him in a quiet voice as she opened the door he just closed and they stepped into his study.
Severus went straight to his liquor cabinet and poured himself a drink. Swallowing it down in one he poured another, then took it and the bottle over to his armchair and sat down. She stayed by the door confused as to what was the matter as he downed the second glass and the third in quick succession.
“Severus? Is something wrong?”
“Wrong? What makes you ask that? Why should anything be wrong?” He asked her in a very caustic voice.
“I … I don’t know.”
“Of course you don’t. Poor little innocent Sky. Under the thumb of the evil Potions Master.” He drank directly from the bottle now, his anger growing. ’How dare they tell him how he should treat his own wife. It was none of their damned business.’
Sky didn’t know how to respond but she knew he was getting angrier as he drank more of the brown stuff. She edged her way to the bedroom, hoping to go inside and not get shouted at.
Severus was fuming at the audacity of them to tell him how to treat and not treat his own wife. ’She was his for Merlin’s sake. His to do with as he pleased.’ He thought as he quickly became drunk. ’She acts so innocent, pretending to be oh so friendly with that bloody werewolf and those blasted Weasley twins. Well he would show her just how friendly he could be. She would do as he told her and that was that.’
