Chapter 32
Soon the plates vanished and many of the tables and chairs, complete with occupants started moving to the sides of the hall. As Kathy watched them moving, she was relieved to be sitting at one of the few tables that stayed where it was.
In a matter of a few minutes, the whole centre area of the Great Hall was empty, the volume of the music increased and couples began making their way onto the dance floor.
Kathy hoped Severus didn’t ask her to dance just yet, she’d eaten so much rich food that she was not yet ready to move.
Severus hoped Kathy did not want to dance at all. He might move about the hall, corridors, and classroom with the grace of a cat, but he had two left feet when it came to dancing. He’d had the basic lessons every fourth year gets when he attended Hogwarts as a student, he could waltz and do the two step with reasonable proficiency, but the was as far as it went.
Both were content to watch the others for a while, chatting with each other and those still at the table. Kathy had turned her chair so she could watch the dancing. Around the time of the fourth dance she looked at him hopefully, the floor was packed with couples, but Kathy didn’t care, she had the protective body glove on and she wanted to dance.
No matter how hard he tried, Severus could not ignore the eagerness on her face. “I have to admit that dancing is not my forte, but if you are wiling to suffer bruised and broken toes, then I would like very much for you to dance with me.”
He was answered with a big smile that reached her eyes as he stood and offered his hand.
Still holding her hand he led her onto the edge of the dance floor where it wasn’t quite so crowded, placed one hand firmly on her waist, she placing hers on his shoulder, and they started to move.
Severus danced stiffly and awkwardly, his eyes constantly watching what others were doing.
“Severus, forget everyone else and look at me. You’re doing fine, you just need to relax.”
Her soft voice and soothing tone caught his attention and he looked down at her. When she smiled up at him he managed to put the rest of the dance floor from his mind, he trusted her to guide him and though he still stepped her toes a couple of times, they moved with reasonable grace through the waltz, Severus never taking his eyes from hers.
She lowered her face to hide a snicker at his sigh of relief when the dance ended.
“That was not so bad.” He commented as they took their seats at the table. “”I must admit it is the first time I have ever enjoyed dancing.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment shall I?”
He leaned forward, his cheek brushing hers. “I would certainly hope so.” He whispered.
The music moved up several beats, a lively tune now playing. “Please tell me you don’t want to dance to this.” He implored.
She laughed. “No you’re safe. I never could do the fox trot.”
He sighed in relief, making her laugh again, much to his delight. He found he enjoyed making her laugh, so long as it wasn’t at his expense.
A couple made their way over and sat down. It was only when the woman spoke that Kathy recognised who she was.
“Tonks, hello. Are you enjoying yourself?”
“It’s not bad, but the music’s a bit stuffy for my tastes. The Feral Ghouls are playing later, things should liven up a bit then. What about you?”
“I’m having a lovely time. The Feral what?”
“Oh Gods, don’t tell me you’ve never heard of the Feral Ghouls. They’ve knocked the Weird Sisters off the top slot three times running.”
Severus and Remus both winced at the thought of the wizarding rock band that was due on stage at some time during the evening. Severus groaned, earning a look from Tonks.
“Hey, they play oldie’s too, well older songs from the fifties and sixties. Some of them are okay.” She told Kathy.
Kathy stared at her for a moment, shocked that she’d called the fifties old. Then she remembered she was no longer in that era. “You might be right. Maybe they’ll play something really ancient that I’ll remember.” She said, trying hard not to giggle.
“Oh hell, I’ve put my foot in it again haven’t I. Oh Kathy I’m really sorry, it’s just you don’t seem old, erm. I’ll shut up now shall I?”
Remus poked Tonks in the robs while Severus glared at her through his mask.
Kathy couldn’t hold it back any longer and she let her laughter out. “Honestly Tonks, don’t get upset about it, I think it’s funny. I’m not offended.”
The two wizards seemed surprised, but the two women didn’t seem to notice as they continued to talk about things the men found quite boring.
An hour later and the band was introduced. Kathy saw a group of five, she didn’t know if they were male, female, or a mix of both. Their faces were painted white with black circles round their eyes and black lipstick. The clothing they wore looked to be torn and ragged and they screeched more than sang. Tonks practically flew onto the floor, screaming and jumping along with the students as loud ‘music?’ resounded through the hall.
Kathy stared at the band, then at the leaping, bouncing, bobbing heads on the dance floor, then back at Severus and Remus. “What - is - that?” She asked in amazement.
“Noise.” They answered in unison.
“I’ll stick to the ‘Oldies’ thank you very much. It’s awful.” She had to shout to make herself heard.
Conversation was kept to a minimum for the next hour while the band belted out more of the noise, they called them ‘numbers’ with titles like, ‘You took my Heart and Ate It’, ‘Lets Die a Gruesome Death’, and ‘Stab-Me, Stab- Me’.
Kathy, Severus, Remus, and many of the older guests breathed a sigh of relief when the band finally stopped for refreshments and a break.
Tonks returned sweating and panting and a far gone expression in her eyes. “Aren’t they just the best?” She asked dreamily.
No one deigned to reply and Kathy wondered if she’d done the right thing encouraging Remus to ask Tonks to the ball. It was obvious he didn’t share the younger witches taste in music.
The couple wandered off to speak to someone else and Kathy was about to say something to Severus when a tall, blonde haired man approached them. He was accompanied by an equally tall, equally blonde woman with a slim, graceful, shapely figure that oozed sensuality. The woman seemed to glide, rather that walk and Kathy couldn’t help but feel inferior. She wore a full length, pale blue silk gown that clung to her perfect figure, and a pale blue mask adorned with peacock feathers and pale sapphires. More the sapphires and diamonds hung at her throat, from her ears, and adorned her wrist and fingers.
“Severus my old friend, I have been waiting for you to come and introduce your guest.”
Severus’ jaw tensed when he realised who was now sitting at their table.
“Lucius, Narcissa, I did not realise you were invited. This is not the kind of social event you would normally attend.”
“I know, but the whole board of governors were invited and it would have been most rude of me to refuse, especially since Draco attends this establishment.” He turned to Kathy. “Lucius Malfoy, my wife, Narcissa.” Lucius said, holding out a hand towards her.
Kathy could almost feel the tension between Severus and this man, but having no idea what it was about, she did the polite thing and took his hand, expecting him to shake it.
Instead he stood and brought her hand to his lips, kissing it slowly, the tip of his tongue lightly tasting at her skin, though if he noticed anything between his lips and her hand, he did not show it, and holding on a little longer than was decent.
She blushed profusely and when he released her she drew her hand back and clasped it to her other under the table, wiping it discretely on the tablecloth.
Severus, who was outraged at Malfoy’s open display of blatant flirting, smiled inwardly when he caught her wiping the back of her hand. “Lucius, Narcissa, Mrs Kathleen Ripley.”
‘Kathleen? Did he just introduce me as Kathleen?’ No one had ever called her by her full Christian name, and she preferred Kathy, still, these people seemed quite arrogant and the woman was looking down her nose at Kathy. Narcissa held a tight smile that did not reach her cold eyes as Kathy was introduced and Kathy took an immediate dislike to the woman.
Still, she didn’t want to show herself up or embarrass Severus, so she held back any scathing comments she wanted to make and smiled back at them. “Very pleased to meet you both.” She said softly.
“The pleasure is all ours Mrs Ripley.” Lucius said smoothly. He really did have a nice voice, but not as nice as Severus’. And Mr Ripley, is he here also?”
She lowered her eyes. “No he isn’t Mr Malfoy.”
At Lucius’ raised eyebrow, Severus expounded. “Mrs Ripley is widowed Lucius. It is a sensitive subject.”
“Ah, my apologies Mrs Ripley, and please accept my deepest condolences.” Lucius put in suavely.
“How dreadful for you, to lose ones husband at such a young age. Tell me, how did you and darling Severus meet?” Narcissa’s voice showed not one ounce of sentiment as she spoke and Kathy didn’t trust the woman at all, and they hadn’t discussed an alibi for her either.
“Mrs Ripley and I have been acquainted for a number of months. I believe Lucius, that your son is attempting to gain your attention.” Severus said smoothly.
Lucius scowled at him, but took the hint and stood, his wife taking his arm as they floated to another table. “Perhaps we shall have the opportunity to meet again Mrs Ripley. Until next time.”
“Who the hell was that?” Kathy asked out the corner of her mouth once they‘d gone.
“Some not very pleasant acquaintances of mine. Unfortunately it is necessary to stay on good terms with him. I would not recommend however that you ever find yourself alone with him.”
She shuddered. “Not much chance of that. Did you see what he did to my hand? Yuck. And his wife, she’s so cold, did you notice?”
“The Malfoy’s are a very rich, influential family, they believe themselves too good for what they consider ‘the lower class’ he is forced to associate with. He is also extremely dangerous Kathy. Do not allow yourself to be swayed by his suave manner.”
“You have to be kidding me. He’s as false as a set of choppers. Even I could see that.”
Severus frowned. “Choppers?”
“False teeth.”
“Ugh, how utterly disgusting. Why on earth would anyone need false teeth?”
“We mortals don’t have magic like you do Severus. Often when we get old our teeth fall out and we need false ones.”
Severus was appalled at the thought of having teeth not his own in his mouth and she laughed at the revolted expression on his face.
